Read the SAPartners Case Study titled Waste prevention project at
Greencore and answer the following questions:
1. Briefly describe Greencore, and the service they provide
Greencore is a food factory that has awarded to work with UK food
manufacturers and retailers to reduce and prevent physical food
waste at its source. Greencore is the one of the signatories of the
Courtauld Agreement. (Courtauld agreement is a voluntary
agreement managed by WRAP which holds members to a 5 %
physical waste reduction). Service that they provide is supply
sandwiches for supermarkets, convenience stores and coffee shops.

2. What is the business problem or opportunity that Greencore aims to

address? (and explain this)
The problem that Greencore is going to aims is they are started to
looking at waste at a very high level to begin with. The analysis
showed that there was around 7.500 tonnes of waste generated at
Manton Wood factory consisting of circa. 1.400 metric tonnes of
liquid waste and circa and 6,100 tonnes of solid waste based on
2011 2012 figures.

3. According to the Case Study, what was one of the most important aspects
of the opportunity? (ie: an outcome of the analysis)
The most important aspects for the opportunity is to be able to
identify some of the most important aspects of waste reduction
opportunities. What I recommend is 1633 tonnes of bread are going
to be animal feed

4. What result did Greencore achieve as a result of this problem solving

exercise?
As a result of this problem solving exercise they will have the new
paradigm. They will increasing aware of the need to use analytical
thinking to access the situation as well as deployment qualification
tool for improvement (future state).

5. The Case Study states: We have observed an 80 20 effect where 80%

of the success of the project depends on the first 20% of the effort. In
your own words, explain what this means and provide examples using the
information provided.
This means that the first 20 % is our effort to find the right people.
Once if we already found the right people, we have 80 % change to
be success in our project. According to the information if they are
inviting the right facilitator through technical knowledge about
waste reduction as well as interpersonal skills to lead teams,
involving the right managers from across different departments
such as operations and NPD , obtaining full and objectives are
clearly communicated with the team members. By doing these the
Manton Wood teams can get success and reach their target in their
project.
6. Describe the structured approach (ie the stages of the process) that was
used to address the business problem / opportunity.
The structure approach that was used to address the problem is the
A3 approach to problem solving. By using these method we can
specify the issue and find a way to solve this problem and make
new innovation. We can also note the effect if we are planning to
take some decision and list the way to do the implementation of our
decision. So, we can work more structured and efficiently to solve
the problem.

7. Illustrate this approach visually in the space below.

The first thing that we need to do if we are using the A3 approach is
to make the background of our problem. And the second thing that
we need to do is to list all the problem that weve found. And after
this we need to list all the possible recommendation to solve this
problem. The fourth think that we need to do is list all the benefits if
they are doing our recommendations. And after this we need to list
the implementations of our recommendations, and the last thing
that we need to do is to write down the effect of our
recommendations.
