The Margate Community Farmers Market is held 8:30 a.m.-noon every Thursday
June 16 through Sept. 1 behind Steve and Cookies by the Bay restaurant, Monroe
and Amherst avenues. Get local produce, off-the-boat seafood, and other Jersey
Fresh products. Call 609-823-1163. New this year is the Longport Bicycle Farmers
Market, which will be held behind Longport Borough Hall 8:30 a.m. noon, two
Saturdays a month from June to August and one Saturday in September. To be
truly green, attendees are being asked to ride their bikes or walk to the market.

The Viking Rowing Club operates rowing programs and lessons for all ages and
levels of experience at the John Holland Boathouse, N Surry and Calvert avenues

Ceremonies begin 9:15 a.m. with a service and flower toss at the Ventnor Fishing
Pier to remember those lost at sea.
The program continues at City Hall
with a flag and wreath ceremony for all
wars, police and fire personnel.
The main service will be held 11 a.m.
at the Greater Absecon Island VFW
Russell T. Smith Post 215, 601 N. Dorset
Ave., where New Jersey Assemblyman
Chris Brown will be keynote speaker
and Michelle Cook will sing. An open
house with refreshments will be held
after the service.
The post will continue its tradition of
distributing poppies at the Ventnor
Wawa 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday and
Saturday, May 27-28.
Margate
The Margate Mothers Association will
hold its annual Memorial Day parade 10
a.m. Lineup begins 9:30 a.m. at the Margate
Municipal Building, 9001 Winchester Ave.
The parade will proceed up Ventnor
Avenue to the AllWars Memorial atVentnor
and Mansfield avenues for a ceremony and
wreath laying. In case of inclement weather,
the ceremony will be held in the Municipal
Building gym.
Organizers welcome families and
children to decorate bikes and baby
strollers and march in the parade.
Uniformed groups and athletic teams
are also encouraged to participate.

Longport
American Legion Post 469 of
Longport will hold its Memorial Day
parade with a new route this year.
Participants will form the parade
10:45 a.m. at 33rd and Atlantic avenues.
The parade starts at 11 a.m. and will
proceed down Atlantic Avenue and
turn right on 26th Avenue, then walkers and Legionnaires riding in the
parade will turn right onto Oberon
Avenue and proceed to the park.
Fire Department, ambulances and
Beach Patrol vehicles will cross Oberon
Avenue, turn right on Absequam
Avenue, and park on 27th Avenue.
Spectators are encouraged to view
the parade on Atlantic Avenue or participate as walkers or bike riders, and
take position behind the lifeguard
boat, which will be behind the Fire
Department vehicles.
Participants are encouraged to decorate
bicycles, strollers in red, white and blue.
A service will be held in the park after
the parade. After the service, the Legion
color guard will proceed to the bayfront
behind Borough Hall, where the Legion
and beach patrol will hold a brief ceremony that will include tossing wreaths into
the bay to honor service men and women
who lost their lives at sea.
Afterward there will be hot dogs and
refreshments for all.
In case of inclement weather, the
parade will be canceled, and the ceremony will be held 11:15 a.m. in the
Centennial Room at Borough Hall, followed by the picnic.
DOWNBEACH SUMMER GUIDE/2016
The only elephant in the world you can walk through and come out aliveis located in
Margate on Decatur and Atlantic avenues. Visitors can climb the spiral staircase inside
Lucy and have a wonderful 360-degree view from the top. There is no charge to visit the
grounds. Admission for the guided tour is $8 for adults 13 and up, $4 for children 3-12
and free for children 2 and under and U.S. military personnel with valid ID. Dont forget
the gift shop, too. Lucy, who has been designated a National Historic Landmark by the
National Park Service, will celebrate her 135th birthday with an all-day party 10 a.m. to

A time-honored tradition along the South Jersey coast is lifeguard racing. Hundreds of
spectators flock to see present and alumni lifeguards test their abilities in various skills
such as rowing, swimming, paddle board and other simulated rescues. Whether the
ocean is calm or rough, the competition is always exciting to watch. Ventnor hosts the
John T. Goudy Memorial Races at Suffolk Avenue, Margate hosts the Margate Memorial
Lifeguard Races on Decatur Avenue, and Longport hosts the Womens Lifeguard
Invitational at 33rd Avenue. The schedule was not available at deadline so check back

Longports past
Go kayaking
Kayaking has become a popular Downbeach activity with rentals available
along Amherst Avenue in Margate. If you have your own, there are plenty of
places to launch, including on the bay on Dorset Avenue in Ventnor. On the
Margate beach, kayaking is permitted anywhere there is no lifeguard stand.
And in Ventnor, kayaking is allowed at Princeton, Buffalo, and Lafayette, and
between Surrey and Suffolk avenues.

The Ventnor Fishing Pier, located on the ocean beach at S. Cambridge Avenue,
offers quiet enjoyment for folks of all ages. Fishing on the pier on a summer day or
evening is as relaxing as it gets, but even without fishing gear, just sitting on the
benches reading is a memory in the making. Yearly membership is $175 for ages
18-62, $150 for seniors 62 older, and $50 for children ages 10-18. Spectator fee is
$50 per person. Weekly and daily rates are also available. It opened for the season
April 25. All memberships are available for purchase at the Fishing Pier office. The

The whole family can stay active at the Milton and Betty Katz JCC, 501 N. Jerome
Ave in Margate. Always popular is Camp by the Sea, with camps for all ages ranging from horseback riding to surfing and golf. Pay guest a fee and enjoy the entire
fitness facility which hosts more than 80 free group exercise classes per week.
Theres indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna and whirlpool. When youre done playing basketball, boxing, or doing yoga, try a massage, a lecture or adult education

You only need to step onto the Ventnor Boardwalk on a weekend morning to see
how popular bike riding has become. The first access ramp is on Martindale
Avenue. From there you can ride the approximately 5.75 miles through Ventnor
into Atlantic City and get a great perspective of the famous boardwalk. Bike

Its hard to find a more laconic way to pass the summer hours than crabbing. To keep
children engaged, all you need is a net, and a hand line baited with bunker, mackerel or chicken. One child pulls the line up very slowly while another scoops the net
underneath the crab. Adults might want to use a small crabbing cage of course
dont forget to attach it to a string. Remember a blue crab (hard shell) must measure
4 inches from point to point to be legal, there is a recreation limit of one bushel.

A Foreign Film Movie Series is being offered at the Atlantic County Library System,
Ventnor Branch, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays through June 22. The series is

One of the most popular summer activities at the shore is fishing, and in Margate
you dont even need your own boat to do it. Ray Scotts Dock at 9211 Amherst Ave.
rents boats of all sizes along with rods, reels, bait and everything else you need. Even
if you dont care for fishing, there are few things that beat cruising the back bays.
Pontoon boats are also available for larger groups. If kayaking is more your speed,

Ventnor Cultural Arts Center
The Ventnor Cultural Arts Center, 6500 Atlantic Ave., offers classes taught by professional instructors for students of all levels. There are classes in ceramics, oil and
acrylic painting, sculpture, watercolor, pastels and jewelry making. Young Peoples
Summer Camp runs for six weeks starting July 5. Students are exposed to fine art,
pottery, jewelry making, dance and gymnastics. Other classes for adults include

Enjoying a glimpse of the rich, but no so famous, is easy in Downbeach. The area is
home to some of the Jersey Shores most beautiful seaside real estate. So why not take
a walk or bike ride and begin to explore the islands many homes? Styles include
Mediterranean, Nantucket, traditional, and Asian-inspired. While many of the high-end
properties are on the ocean, the beach block is just the beginning of the architectural
beauty that awaits the discerning eye. You may want to go to the southern tip of
Longport and view the homes along Point Drive where the price of admission can top
$3 million, according to recent for sale listings. Its free, however, to cycle, walk and gawk.

Downbeach offers some great bayside docks and parks for enjoying beautiful sunset views with your special someone. Some choice locations include Margates
Municipal Pier at Amherst and N. Washington Avenue, the park behind Longports
Borough Hall at 24th Avenue, and Ski Beach at Burk and Dorset avenues in Ventnor
Heights. The latest sunsets of the year will be 8:29 p.m. June 25-29. Then the sun
begins setting sooner each day. By Labor Day, Sept. 5, the sun will set at 7:21 p.m.
