Lima 1st campaign

stop for Pence
BY NANCY SPENCER
DHI Media Editor
nspencer@delphosherald.com

Indiana Governor and Vice Presidential hopeful Mike Pence takes the stage Friday evening at the UNOH Event Center for a GOP rally. (DHI Media/Nancy Spencer)

LIMA As the area enjoyed a

much-needed rain shower, Indiana
Governor and Vice-Presidential hopeful
Mike Pence spoke to a crowd of nearly
800 at the UNOH Event Center Friday
evening. With umbrellas and rain gear
in tow, supporters gathered for the first
GOP rally and Pences first appearance
in Ohio in the 100 days before the Nov.
8 Elections.
Pence told the crowd the conservative
principals they hold dear will be brought
back by him and Trump if they are elected
to the White House.
I joined this campaign in a heartbeat,
Pence said. Men and women of Ohio, you
have nominated a man for president who
never quits, who never backs down, who is

a fighter and a winner. Up until now, hes

had to do it all by himself, but with this
united party and this united movement, I
know we will elect Donald Trump.
He also commented on the directness of
his running mate.
We need a president to lead
American back to strength, Pence
said.You know Donald Trump doesnt
tip-toe through the 1,000s of politically-correct rules. Hell restore law and
order and give our law enforcement the
support they deserve. Hell strengthen
our military and well crush ISIS. Hell
cut taxes for everyone and squeeze
every nickel out of the budget. Hell
appoint judges who will uphold the
constitution.
Pence said it was time for a change in
leadership.

Confusion cleared up about a tax issue and factory farm

BY KAY LOUTH
DHI Media Correspondent
news@delphosherald.com
MONTICELLO Tax Increment
Financing is a vehicle in which government entities can protect their constituents
pockets. Van Wert County has multiple TIF
agreements in place. It serves no benefit to
the business.
We have about 20 TIF agreements,
two in Jennings, and we are picking up
three more new ones this year (in Jennings
Township), said County Auditor Nancy
Dixon.
Taxes are $12, 788 in Jennings Township
for every $1 million in valuation, Dixon

explained, adding that every township was

different. According to Jennings Township
Trustee Michael Hiett, a TIF was initiated
with Pine Valley Farms, a Mercer County
business seeking a permit to build a factory
farm in Monticello, an agreement that Hiett
said was executed in February.
If that factory was going, in they would
have to sign an agreement to protect the
roads in the area and the money would go to
protect St. Rt. 116 in that area, he said. He
explained that normally the trustees would
go through the school district to execute a
TIF but the Spencerville School District has
declined to agree in the past. The school
board objected to the loss of funds provided
by a TIFF agreement.

Dixon, after a conversation with Joe

Deckard, an attorney involved in the TIF
agreement, cleared up the confusion about
the status of the proposed agreement.
This one has not been recorded yet; as
a matter of fact, its only been applied on
April 4, 2016, at the state level. It will be
several months (before approval), Dixon
said.
In a TIF agreement, taxes are designated
for infrastructure repair and improvement
only. If a school district and trustees agree
on a TIF, the school would receive 15 percent, the Joint Vocational School 15 percent
and the trustees would get the remaining
70%. If both entities agree, a TIF can be
structured to last for 30 years. If the school

does not agree, the trustees can still enter

into a TIF but only for a period up to 10
years.
While Hiett said there was a TIF, neither
Dixon nor the County Recorders Office
knows anything about it. In addition, Dixon
said she didnt know how a TIF could be in
place since contraction has not even begun
on the proposed factory farm.
We havent seen an agreement yet,
Dixon said. Apparently, the permitting
process has slowed down since Spencerville
Citizens Against Factory Farms began their
opposition efforts.

Start your day with a hearty breakfast. You might
want to double this recipe.
Sausage and Pepper Burritos
2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
1/3 pound kielbasa, chopped
2 red bell peppers, thinly sliced
1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
Salt and pepper
6 large eggs, beaten
1 cup shredded pepper jack cheese, divided
4 large flour tortillas, warmed
1 cup store-bought salsa verde
In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over
medium-high heat. Add the kielbasa and cook until
browned, 3 to 4 minutes. Add the bell peppers and the
onion slices; season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring, until golden-brown, 7 to 8 minutes. Transfer to a
large plate.
In the same skillet, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon
olive oil over medium heat. Add the eggs, season with
salt and pepper, and scramble, 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in the
kielbasa mixture and 1/2 cup cheese.
Divide the egg mixture among the 4 tortillas and roll
up burrito-style. Transfer the burritos to plates and top
with the remaining 1/2 cup cheese and the salsa.
Soda Cracker Cookies
2 cups granulated sugar
2/3 cup milk
1 sleeve saltines (1/4 pound), crushed, but not too
fine
6 to 8 generous tablespoons creamy peanut butter
Combine sugar and milk in a saucepan over low
heat. Bring to a boil and boil for 3 minutes. Watch
carefully because the mixture can boil over depending
on the size of the pan.
In the meantime, place crushed saltines and peanut
butter in a large bowl. Pour the sugar mixture over the
peanut butter and crackers. Combine quickly. Drop by
teaspoonfuls onto wax paper. Allow to set. Store in a
covered container with wax paper between the layers.
Makes 3 to 4 dozen.

BY LOVINA EICHER
It is Thursday morning and it looks like
we will have another hot day. Yesterdays
temperature reached the nineties and the
humidity was high. The humidity is high
again this morning so we want to get
everything done we can outside before it
gets too hot.
I have a breakfast casserole in the oven
for our breakfast. Joseph is out milking
Bessie our cow. I decided to write this
column first thing this morning since Im
already a day later than usual. Daughters
Elizabeth and Lovina will soon be here.
Lovina went to Elizabeths house yesterday morning and now Elizabeth is
coming over here to help clean and cook
for Susans upcoming wedding. Lovina is
always so excited when she gets to go to
Elizabeths house.
Tomorrow my three sisters who live in
this area will come help make noodles for
the wedding. I want to make more than
last time, as they used all we had made
for Elizabeths wedding. I would rather
have more than enough of everything
than to run out of something. It takes a
lot of brain work to make sure you have
plenty of food on hand for over 1,000
guests in a day.
Lovina and Kevin picked over five
gallons of green beans this week. They
cleaned them and I put them in the freezer. If the green beans keep doing well,
that might be the vegetable we have at
one of the wedding meals. I fixed some
green beans one night this week. I diced

threshold can be used for grasshoppers and other leaf-feeding
insects. The other leaf feeding
insects include Japanese beetles,
green cloverworms and other
caterpillars. If soybeans are in
pre-bloom, they can tolerate up
to 40 percent defoliation before

percent defoliation from bloom

refer to whole-plant defoliation,
not just a few leaves. Most local

A word to the wise about
treating for defoliators: A good
reason to avoid spraying too
soon, apart from simple economics, is that many pyrethroid
products will actually make spider mite problems worse by
killing off the natural predators.
We often see the most intense
spider mite flare-ups in fields
that have been treated with a
broad-spectrum pyrethroid.
Farmers will be checking
their fields over the next several
weeks for mites and insects.
Dry weather does not prevent
their feeding. Farmers have to
be vigilant and control these
pests even in drought years. Just
another challenge and cost they
face besides the weather to bring
food to our tables. For additional mite and insect information, the Ohio State University

Joseph will be fourteen on Sunday,
July 24. That will conclude the July birthdays in this family. Sister Emma turned
forty-three on July 19 so I want to wish
her a happy birthday. Her husband Jacob
is planning a surprise birthday party
tomorrow night for her. She will be here
helping during the day so they should be
able to sneak around her. We hope she
will be surprised!
I should also mention that no matter if
Mother isnt here anymore, she is always
remembered on her birthday. On July 18
she would have been 80 years old. She
was a great mother to all of us children.
We have so many good memories of her.
The porch deck is all stained now.
That was a big job! Joe took all the vinyl
railings off so we had it easier to stain.
Now hes put the railings back on. Sons
Benjamin and Joseph are staining the
ramp today. Hopefully they will beat the
heat. It has rows and rows of railings
(wooden) that need to be stained. Its all
time consuming but it will help preserve
the wood better. I was helping the other
evening with it and I had my share of

it. Im glad they will do the rest. I like

painting walls a lot more than staining
and I dont even like to paint.
This is now after breakfast. Elizabeth
and Lovina are here. Elizabeth is cutting
out Kevins pants for the wedding. We
want to wash laundry. There are so many
unfinished jobs for the wedding that I
have a hard time deciding where to start.
I am starting to get a little nervous as time
gets closer and closer. I want to try and
stay calm and think everything will fall
into place at the end.
Elizabeth always brings her dogs
Crystal and Izzy along. This morning
we heard meowing in the buggy. She is
giving milk to two kittens which were
orphaned when the mother cat was killed
on the road. They look like they are doing
well. The boys were teasing her about
bringing two dogs, then two kittens, and
wondered what she will bring two of next
time. Kevin suggested that it will probably be ducks.
I must get back to work. Take care
everyone! Gods blessings to all!

Strickler in for VFW Cardinals baseball team 2016

Brinkman at
Jefferson golf
BY JIM METCALFE
DHI Media Sports Editor

jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com

DELPHOS

Chad
Brinkman had coached the
Jefferson boys golf team for a
number of years.
However, with him assuming the mantle of the high
school principal, he felt the
need to relinquish the post for
2016.
In steps Ryan Strickler to assume the position.
Six letterwinners from a 7-18 team a year ago (6th in the
Northwest Conference regular season and 7th in the conference tournament), including a trio of Northwest Conference
honorees, are back to make the transition easier.
Senior second-teamer Andrew Foust is the top returnee.
Senior Andrew Theobold (Honorable-Mention All-NWC)
and junior Braden Hammons (Honorable-Mention All-NWC)
are other top returnees.
Senior Evan Mox, senior Connor Berelsman and senior
Tristan Moore are back for a veteran crew that lost one player
to graduation Brooke Gallmeier.
Look for Andrew Foust, with work on scoring consistency,
to compete for first-team honors in the NWC. Hammons and
the rest of the seniors have the potential to greatly improve
and if they are successful, this will be a major positive for the
team, Strickler said.
With many returning starters and a great amount of newcomers (16 total golfers), I feel like the program is heading in
the right direction.
Coach Brinkman done a fine job the past few seasons,
laying a great foundation and growing the golf program, and I
hope to continue to build on his success. I am very excited to
have been given the opportunity.
Junior Sara Zalar, sophomore Matt Schroeder and freshman
Braxton Scalf come in for particular mention by Strickler as
newcomers to watch.
With everyone returning, our goal is always to compete
to be in the top 5 with the ultimate goal of a shot at the NWC
crown. We would also like to finish with a record over .500,
Strickler added. Lincolnview will be the team to beat in the
NWC. Coach (Daryl) Dowdy does a fine job grooming the
younger players to step in to voids left by graduation. Also
having Josiah Rager is an excellent leader at the top to build
around. Allen East and Paulding both will also compete for the
top of the NWC.
The remainder of the Wildcat links crew has junior Nathan
Pohlman, junior Aaron Stant, sophomore Sam Harvey, freshman Sydnie McGue, freshman Caleb Jarman, freshman Colby
Klaus and classmate Brady Johnston.
The Strickler reign commences on Monday, Aug. 8, for the
annual Delphos Country Club Tee-Off Classic.

for 25 previous seasons.
His Lady Lancer team finished 46-22 in 2015, coming in second at Division
II Sectionals and 11th at
Districts.
He begins season number
26 with four letterwinners
returning from the 2015 edition.
The top returnee is fourthyear senior Makenzie Kraft
(48.05-per-9-hole average).
Also back is fourth-year
senior Macala Ashbaugh
(48.33), fourth-year senior
McKenzie Davis (51.3) and
third-year junior Marissa
Miller (52.8).
With only one departure
from last season Madison
Shepherd, who decided to
further her career in the workforce to help defer the cost
of her college education
the fifth golfer this season
is a newcomer is freshman
Shiann Kraft.
However, with no other
golfers, depth is an issue.
Doidge figures he has
plenty to work with for
improvement this season.
We are competitive and
we work hard. I expect all of

our golfers to improve by at

least five strokes this season;
I think all of them are capable
of surprising people, Doidge
added. Everyone needs to
work on their short game and
putting; over 50 percent of
the shots are related to the
short game.
After returning to the
girls program five years ago,
we have been to the District
tournament four out of five
years. I expect another tournament run this season and
we want to be competitive in
all tournaments and matches.
Lincolnview begins the
season 8:30 a.m. Friday, Aug.
5, in the Celina Invitational.

Regulations to Remember:
The daily bag limit for walleye
in Ohio waters of Lake Erie is
6 fish per angler; minimum size
limit is 15 inches. The daily
bag limit for yellow perch is 30
fish per angler in all Ohio waters
of Lake Erie. The trout and
salmon daily bag limit is 5 fish
per angler; minimum size limit is
12 inches. Black bass (largemouth and smallmouth bass):
the daily bag limit is 5 fish per
angler with a 14-inch minimum
size limit.
Western Basin
Walleye: Many of the fish
being caught have been below
the 15-inch size limit, primarily
from the 2014 year class. The
best locations have been north
of the Toledo water intake, near
G can of the Camp Perry firing
range, near Crib Reef and around
Kelleys Island Shoal. Most fish
have been caught by trolling
with spoons or worm harnesses
and by casting with weight-forward spinners or mayfly rigs.
Yellow Perch: Yellow perch
fishing has been improving
with the best spots being east
of the Toledo water intake, west
of Rattlesnake Island and south
of Green and Kelleys islands.
Perch-spreaders with shiners

Bass:
Largemouth bass have been
caught in harbors and along
the main lake shoreline around
Catawba and Marblehead using
drop-shot rigs, tube jigs and
crankbaits.
Central Basin
Walleye: Walleye fishing is
improving off Sawmill Creek,
northwest of Cranberry Creek
and near Lorain. Good fishing
was reported in 34 feet of water
northwest of Edgewater Park, in
42-56 feet of water northwest
of Chagrin River, in 45-50 feet
north of Fairport Harbor and
in 71-74 feet north-northwest
of Ashtabula. Anglers are trolling with Dipsy divers or planer
boards with weights or jet divers,
ahead of stick baits or harnesses.
The best colors have been purple, pink and perch color pattern.
Yellow Perch: Yellow perch
fishing has been slow recently.
The best area has been in 30
feet north of Old Woman Creek.
Good fishing was reported in
50-55 feet northeast of Ashtabula
and in 45-50 feet of water north
of Conneaut. Perch-spreaders
with shiners fished near the bottom produce the most fish.
Smallmouth Bass: Fishing
has been excellent in 10-30
feet around the harbor areas
in Cleveland, Fairport Harbor,

AROUND THE HORN

Headed for the Hall?
Active players in line for baseballs
highest individual honor

Just days before Ken Griffey Jr. and

Mike Piazza were scheduled for enshrinement in the Baseball Hall of Fame, ESPN
released its Hall of 100, a list of the
games 100 greatest players as voted on
by a panel of experts. Babe Ruth was
No. 1 and both Griffey and Piazza made
ESPNs list.
On that list were 10 active players,
some of whom will eventually land in
Cooperstown. Heres a look at each of
the 10 and a look at their Hall credentials. Included are each players Wins
Above Replacement numbers according
to Baseball-Reference.com, through July
24, along with other key stats. The year in
parentheses is the players rst season in
the majors.
93. Felix Hernandez, SP, Mariners
(2005)
50.8 WAR, 147105, 3.12 ERA
With just one Cy Young Award and
two 15-plus-win seasons, Hernandez is
far from a sure thing to reach the Hall.
King Felix, 30, still needs to rack up
more quality seasons, but his career WAR
ranks him 97th among pitchers, and his
2,197 strikeouts (57th all-time) and his
8.48 per nine innings (27th) show his elite
talent. While it should be noted that he
has spent his career in a pitchers park, a
few more good seasons should give him
Cooperstown credentials.
92. Adrian Beltre, 3B, Rangers (1998)
86.9 WAR, .285/.337/.476, 427 HR
Beltre would be an atypical Hall selection. Hes never won an MVP (he nished
second in 2004 with the Dodgers, and third
with Texas in 12), and hes been to just
four All-Star games, the rst coming at
age 31. But most fans would be stunned to
know that Beltre ranks 31st in career WAR
among position players and nished in the
top 10 of his league in WAR eight times.

Athlon Sports
Beltres own under the radar because 31
percent of his career WAR value comes
from his defense, but his ranking
by ESPNs panel suggests he has a
chance at enshrinement.
85. Bryce Harper, OF, Nationals (2012)
21.4 WAR, .282/.374/.510, 117 HR
Harper posted an astounding 9.9 WAR
at age 22 last season, which ranked rst in
the National League among position players, and he has already appeared in four
All-Star games. His numbers have fallen
dramatically this year a 1.9 WAR,
thanks to an awful .249 batting average
on balls in play thats .125 lower than last
year and while its probably premature
to include him on a top-100 list, theres no
denying that Harper has HOF ability.
78. David Ortiz, DH, Red Sox (1997)
54.2 WAR, .286/.380/.552, 527 HR
WAR is somewhat unkind to Big
Papi, rating him 149th among position
players that is, if you consider Ortiz in
that category, since hes played only 277
career games in the eld. The failure to
add defensive value is the primary reason
for a lower ranking. Given his role on title
teams, where he repeatedly came up huge
on the big stage time and time again, and
his reputation as one of his generations
most feared hitters, voters probably wont
hold that against him. That said, as a hitter alone, his WAR ranks below a list of
non-Hall-of-Fame position players that
includes (but isnt limited to) Jose Cruz
Sr., Chet Lemon, Robin Ventura, Will
Clark and John Olerud.
65. Ichiro Suzuki, OF, Marlins (2001)
59.9 WAR, .314/.357/.405
Though mostly a singles hitter, Ichiro
may have 3,000 MLB hits by the time
you read this. No Hall-eligible player
who reached that milestone outside Rafael
Palmeiro (who failed a performance-enhancing drug test in 2005) has been denied
enshrinement. Add another 1,278 hits in
Japan through his age-26 season, and professional baseballs all-time hit king likely

earns a bronze plaque.

40. Mike Trout, CF, Angels (2011)
44.0 WAR, .305/.400/.559, 158 HR
The greatest player at the moment,
Trout, who is just 24, has been the ALs
WAR leader in each of his four full seasons and is leading it again in 2016. He
hits, he runs, he elds, and barring some
spectacular collapse, he should make the
Hall with ease.
39. Miguel Cabrera, 1B, Tigers (2003)
67.2 WAR, .320/.398/.559, 427 HR
Cabreras glove has subtracted from
his career WAR numbers. But theres no
debating the bat, which has led him to
eight top-10 WAR
nishes and helped him rank 84th alltime among position players. Still an AllStar caliber player at 33, Cabrera is likely
assured of enshrinement as-is.
31. Albert Pujols, 1B-DH, Angels
(2001)
100.2 WAR, .309/.394/.575, 579 HR
The 21st-best all-time position player
according to WAR. The only thing standing between the 36-year-old Pujols and the
Hall is retirement.
26. Clayton Kershaw, SP, Dodgers
(2008)
51.8 WAR, 125-58, 2.39 ERA
Assuming current back issues dont
derail Kershaw, the 28-year-old could
eventually have an argument as historys
greatest pitcher given his composite sub2.00 ERA since 2013.
21. Alex Rodriguez, DH, Yankees
(1994)
118.0 WAR, .295/.380/.551, 696 HR,
2,084 RBI
WAR rates A-Rod as the 12th-best
position player ever. All but one of those
ahead of him was a sure-re Hall pick.
The exception was Barry Bonds (No. 2),
who spent the last part of his career under
performance-enhancing drug suspicions.
Rodriguez, suspended for PED use in
2014, could suffer from the same voter
treatment Bonds has received so far.

Opinion
Let the
celebrating
begin!
At first glance, August might
seem light on the holiday offerings. I toodled around the Internet
and dug a little deeper to find a
healthy helping of celebrations to
help you beat the heat (or at least
smile indulgingly!).
1. Aug. 1: National Girlfriends
Day
Rest easy, boyfriends of the
world, this holiday has nothing to
do with you. National Girlfriends
Day honors the lady friends who
are there for their lady friends.
2. Aug. 5: International Beer
Day
Back in 2007, a group of friends
decided to internationally dedicate a day to gather with friends
and enjoy the deliciousness that is
beer, celebrate the dedicated men
and women who brew and serve
our beer, and bring the world
together under the united banner
of beer.
3. Aug. 5: National Underwear
Day
Though we cannot prove it,
we smell the collusion between

Nancy Spencer

On the
Other Hand

International Beer Day and this

fest of unmentionables. Whether
coincidence or conspiracy, celebrating these two Aug. 5 holidays
does not have to be mutually
exclusive.
4. Aug. 9: Book Lovers Day
Granted, for most book lovers every day is a day to celebrate reading, but for the sake
of celebration lets open up the
floor to all interpretations of what
it means to be a book lover.
Perhaps you just love the physical feel of a book, and have no
interest in cracking one open. Or
maybe, this day is meant to honor
books in love with each other.
5. Aug. 10: Lazy Day
And a lucky day because this
year it falls on a Friday! Start the
weekend early by doing positively
nothing.
(This next one is a shout out
to my brother, the lefty in the
family.)
6. Aug. 13: International Lefthanders Day
For those world citizens who

have found themselves in a righthanded-scissors-world, today the

world honors your special gift.
If youre in the UK on the 13th,
the Left-handers Club sponsors
members-only areas called Lefty
Zones.
7. Aug. 18: National Bad Poetry
Day
Roses are red/ Violets are blue/
You probably saw this joke coming/ But we made it anyway.
8. Aug. 22: National Tooth
Fairy Day
Because anyone who can make
a dollar bill magically appear
under your pillow deserves a day
of feting.
9. Aug. 24: National Hug Your
Boss Day
While it appears to have originated in the UK, the principles of
this special day apply around the
world. For one day of the year, set
aside your frustrations and show
your boss a little appreciation
with a physical embrace. Please
make sure to first check all company HR codes thoroughly.

Without the cold of winter

to give it sweetness
Friend Jan took to social
media Sunday to chastise
those who would complain
about the latest heat wave. I
waited a whole, long winter
for this weather, she said.
By the end of the day, she
was holding a glass of wine
against her temples and neck.
Its hot; so hot that Nemo
the Pig not only burrowed
up to her eyeballs in a mud
wallow, she dragged the wading pool across the yard and
pulled it overhead to keep herAnne Coburn-Griffis
self and her mud bath cool.
Its so hot that the chickens
are laying their eggs mid-stride. Who wants to sit in a hot nest
box anyway?
Its so hot that the final black raspberries of the summer
have shriveled to nubby pellets on the wild brambles.
Its so hot and dry that the mower discards more dust than
cut grass and there will be no creek left as its pumped up and
over the tomato field across the pavement.
But so hot isnt completely too hot, in some instances. The
bee tree at the end of the road, a catalpa that has housed a wild
hive for as long as I can remember, hums with the warm, rich
fragrance of honey that flows amber from the heart of the tree.
The trees foliage is lush, fed by the sticky stuff that holds it
together.
Last Friday we said goodbye to Marshmallow, one of the
first goats to enter our lives. Although the ground everywhere
else is baked hard by hot sun, the chosen burial spot was easily turned, surprisingly pliable. As Marsh was laid to rest, the
other five goats gathered close. They circled Marshs brother
who nervously stamped and pawed as the earth was reset.
Afterward, they stood together at the gravesite for several minutes before retreating to shade as we all wait for rain and relief.

In remembrance of common sense

Are you trying to make sense of the crazy
events happening both domestically and internationally? You are not alone. I wonder what
part Political Correctness has played in our
angst? Has it been taken a little too far?
Maybe you cant understand why tens of
millions of people are roaming the streets
hunting for the Pokmon Go virtual monsters
Slowbro and Charizard. Is it because these
people are in a futile attempt to find happiness
or a distraction from the doom and gloom of
everyday news? Or is it because we have such
high hopes for the future that very little can
live up to our expectations?
When was it that we lost the ability to
recognize good old Common Sense? Maybe
the death of Common Sense happened when
a loud, powerful minority demanded Political
Correctness rule the day? When the push for
Political Correctness became the mantra weve
seen a real shortage of Common Sense in our
daily lives. Why cant they co-exist?
With the Republican and Democratic
National Conventions (in Cleveland and
Philadelphia) now concluded maybe we
can put the acrimony of presidential politics
aside for a few weeks while the International
Olympic Committee ((IOC) tries to present
the Rio Olympic Games without any major
distractions Aug. 5-21.
It hasnt been easy for the IOC as it tries to
safeguard the amateur sport at the same time
they safeguard the rights of individual athletes.
The IOC had to decide if the Russian delega-

tion needed to be kicked out of the Rio Games

as punishment for its widespread, state-sponsored doping program.
On July 24 the IOC rejected the call for
a total ban to the dismay of the Institute of
National Anti-Doping Organizations. So much
for integrity, decency and fair play.
In addition to that controversy, the IOC
must hope the host country Brazil is up to the
challenge of conducting the Games on a security level and from the standpoint of having
safe and adequate facilities for a grand presentation for the expected visitors from around
the world, and for the billion people watching
on TV.
NBC will produce 6,755 hours of coverage for Americans who wish to stop playing
Pokmon Go and to take a time-out from the
sport of politics. For at least those two weeks
Americans will unite to cheer on the remarkable athletes that comprise Team USA.
When the Rio Olympics draw to a close,
well splinter off into two contentious groups
again, liberals and conservatives, and stage the
Political Election Games that will culminate in
the Nov. 8 General Election. If only the political class was as dedicated, skilled and worthy
of adulation as our Olympic heroes.
When the days are dark try to remember this
passage from the poem Remember to Forget.
Always remember to forget the troubles that
pass your way; but never forget the blessings
that come each day. Author Unknown.

The wonders of reality TV

I love reality television shows. I have watched many for years
when reality television first started.
I remember watching the first season of Survivor 15 years
ago. Ill never forget Rudy dropping his hand on accident from
the idol in the final immunity challenge. I still think he wouldve
won if he didnt do that.
Survivor has had so many seasons since then I didnt get to
watch them all and some of them just didnt have a cast with a personality for me to relate to or anyone that grabbed my attention.
I also watch The Bachelor and The Bachelorette which I
get made fun of constantly by my boyfriend for watching those,
but who cares? I enjoy it! Its dramatic and ridiculous and not
believable at all. Its great!
My summer show obsession is Big Brother.
I love the strategy that has to go into playing the game and
the alliances the cast has to form and the constant game talk they
have to secretly do while living in the same house as all the other
players. It gets pretty intense.
I wanted to audition for Big Brother this year because they
had an open casting call in Lima in April, but it was same day as I
started this job and I figured coming back on day two and asking
off for three months probably wouldnt fly.
Maybe next year I could try.
These reality shows feature real people but just as I said,

much I mourn the loss of Common Sense in

todays world, and the proliferation of Political
Correctness, sent me a copy of the obituary
that made the rounds a decade ago lamenting
the death of Common Sense. Im sure books
have been written with examples of how
Political Correctness has replaced the virtues
of Common Sense. For our survival, I hope the
trend reverses.
For those who miss Common Sense, heres
a repeat of that essay that reportedly appeared
in an issue of The London Times.
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved
old friend, Common Sense, who has been
with us for many years. No one knows for
sure how old she was, since birth records were
long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. She
will be remembered as having cultivated such
valuable lessons as: knowing when to come
in out of the rain; why the early bird gets the
worm; life isnt always fair; and maybe it was
my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound
financial policies (dont spend more than you
can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not
children, are in charge).
Her health began to deteriorate rapidly
when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old
boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school
for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher
fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only
worsened her condition.

IN
THE
LOOP
By
Erin Cox

they do audition and do get paid to be on the show. Thats the

same for Survivor, The Bachelor, Amazing Race, all of
them.
Big Brother has 24/7 live feeds of the cast, known as house
guests. One year I bought the subscription and watched them
when I had time. The house guests often mentioned the producers
wanting them to do certain things to go along with their characters.
This year I noticed that they feature the exact same characters
as previous years, the good looking guy, the nerd, the old man, the
nice girl, etc. Its all the same.
The problem Im having is that these are suppose to be reality shows with real people, yet theyre not real and are blatantly
being asked to act a certain way.
Either way, to me it is entertaining. I like to watch it and think
at least I dont act like that, but I always wonder what my character would be on the show.
I think thats why I like Survivor so much because it is more
real because the people are dealing with real life struggles trying to find food and survive wherever the show has taken them
to that year.
Maybe Ill stick with my dream of being on Survivor or Ill
be like so many of the cast members do and do Survivor and
Big Brother.

People Make
the Difference
Common Sense lost ground when parents
attacked teachers for doing the job that they
themselves had failed to do in disciplining
their unruly children. It declined even further
when schools were required to get parental
consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin
to a student; but could not inform parents when
a student became pregnant and wanted to have
an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the
churches became businesses; and criminals
received better treatment than their victims.
Common Sense took a beating when you
couldnt defend yourself from a burglar in
your own home and the burglar could sue you
for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will
to live after a woman failed to realize that
a steaming cup of coffee was hot. When it
spilled in her lap, she was promptly awarded a
huge financial settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death by
her parents, Truth and Trust; by her husband,
Discretion; by her daughter, Responsibility;
and by her sons, Reason and Valor.
She is also survived by her five stepbrothers, I Know My Rights, I Want It Now,
Someone Else Is To Blame, Im The Victim
and Pay Me For Doing Nothing.
Not many attended her funeral because so
few realized she was gone. If you still remember her, pass this on. If not, join the majority
and do nothing and let Political Correctness
tear us apart.

Trivia

Answers to Wednesdays questions:

Las Vegas is known as the Wedding Capital of the World, playing host to more
than 100,000 weddings every year. A marriage license costs $60 in Nevada plus a
$5.15 fee if you want to pay with a credit card.
In order to give pitchers a better grip, every baseball used in the major leagues is
wiped down with mud from an undisclosed location on the Delaware River. Known
as Lena Blackburne Original Baseball Rubbing Mud, the substance was discovered by Blackburne, a third-base coach for the Philadelphia Athletics in the 1920s.
Hed gone looking for a spot with mud that had the perfect consistency, and found it
in a hole along the Delaware River. He started a company that now ships the mud
to baseball teams across the country and to this day, they keep the exact location of
the mud a closely-guarded secret.
Todays questions:
What classic toy, which first gained popularity in the 1950s, is said to stick like
magic?
Despite being strongly associated with the country, St. Patrick was not actually
born in Ireland. How did he end up there?
Answers in next Wednesdays Herald.

Murder
(Continued from page 1)

(Continued from page 1)

Saturday will have performances by Cadillac Ranch, Deuces Wild,

Erastus and Truck Stop Manners.
The gates open at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and adults can look forward to purse bingo at 1 p.m. and a cornhole tournament at 2 p.m.
Registration for the cornhole tournament is until noon.
Additionally, 50/50 raffles, live auctions and silents auctions will
take place on Saturday. The live auction will be from 6-8 p.m. There
will be a golf cart giveaway at 11 p.m. on Saturday and a drawing for a
cash prize of $20,000. A reverse raffle will also take place.
An opening flag ceremony in association with the Van Wert VFW
will also take place at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Theyll also be bringing a replica of the Tomb of the Unknown
Soldier, Otto said. Theyll have guards walking in front of it from
10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Its very cool to see.
For the kids there will be inflatables, games and a Pokemon hunt
from noon-6 p.m. on Saturday. There will also be a bicycle giveaway at
5:45 pm. Food and drinks will be available to purchase all day.
A guest of honor will also speak at 12:30 about their experience with
St. Judes.
The benefit has raised $195,000 in its first four year: $43,000 the
first year, $47,000 the second year, $50,000 the third year and $55,000
the fourth year. They hope to break their record this year and have even
more people come out to the event.
We just want everyone to know there is something for everyone
here, Otto said. Huggy Bear is a very family-oriented place and we
always see kids and families here playing around. We just wanted to
use this as a way to help those that cant always do that.

Then, a little over 10 years later,

Soto sought out local law enforcement to cleanse his soul about the
events that took the life of his son.
He voluntarily came into our
office and and asked to talk to somebody, Sheriff Tim Meyer explained.
He said he wanted to confess to a
murder.
Based on the statements Soto
made to Meyer and Detective
Sergeant Roy Sargent at the Putnam
County Sheriffs Office on Monday,
Putnam County Prosecutor Gary
Lammers on Tuesday filed murder and tampering with evidence
charges.
During his arraignment, Soto
often appeared unclear as to both the
nature and the severity of the charges
against him, repeatedly asking Judge
Chad C. Niese for clarification and
expressing the need for release so as

to return to work.
Assistant County Prosecutor
Todd Schroeder requested and Judge
Niese approved a cash or surety
bond in the amount of $500,000, a
bond Soto apparently was unable to
meet as he remains incarcerated at
the Putnam County Jail.
Sotos confession raises a number
of questions, the most significant
of which, with regard to his prosecution, being the issue of double
jeopardy.
Double jeopardy is going to be
a part of this case in the sense that
there was a prior prosecution in 2006
and a conviction and now theres a
second prosecution, Schroeder said.
It is my expectation that the issue
will be raised that there will be a
hearing on that issue. Of course, we
wouldnt be here today if it was the
prosecutors conclusion that double
jeopardy barred this case.
According to Lammers, prosecu-

CDL Class A Drivers

SpartanNash is growing and looking
for Safety Minded CDL Class A Drivers.
Competitive wage and an outstanding
benefit package offered.

We are tired of being told this is a good as it gets

and well solve the problem tomorrow. Were tired of
being told by the elite in the Capitol they can plan our
lives better than we can, he said. Its remarkable to
think that at the moment when America is crying out for
something new and for different leadership, the other
party has answered with a stale agenda and the most
predictable of names.
Pence was interrupted by a pair of protesters shouting
Lima Trumps Hate, who were escorted from the venue
by Secret Service and event staff. They joined others
outside.
Pence went on to outline Hillary Clintons legacy in
foreign affairs.
Clintons record speaks for itself. America needs to
be strong to keep the world safe, he said. Weakness
arouses evil.
Pence conclude by stating, We are ready for new
leadership. Trump will make our economy hum. Were
ready for Donald Trump.
Pence has experience in government as a former
U.S. congressman, chairman of the House Republican

Conference and as Indiana governor. The GOP has

be very vocal about Trumps lack of experience in
Washington.
Pence may be best known for signing a bill in 2015
that permits business owners to refuse to participate in
a same-sex weddings. Some called it protection for religious residents. Others called it discrimination.
Republican State Senate candidate and former State
Representative Matt Huffman and Senator Keith Faber
spoke during the pre-program. Both presented a united
front for Trump and Pence.
Its so important we elect Trump, Faber said. We
need common sense. Weve asked for five things and
Trump will give us those: letting the states be labora9 thforAdemocracy
tories
giving them back the power
nnual inby
Vtransportation,
an Werthealth care and
to govern themselves
education; meaningful federal tax reform; federal regulatory reform; a federal balanced budget amendment; and
judges who believe the Constitution means what it says.
Allen County Republican Chair Keith Cheney was
pleased by the excitement he saw Friday.
The movement has started, Cheney said. Im glad
to be a part of this.

tors are also seeking testimony from

witnesses other than Soto.
Were trying to follow up on
what he said, where we can corroborate some of the things hes mentioned, following up with witnesses
since that time to see if maybe hes
made similar statements, Lammers
said.
Ultimately, at the heart of the
matter lies the issue of intent.
Thats the point that the courts
will have to prove, if there was true
intent or if it was accidental, Meyer
said. He knew what he was doing.
What he did was intentional. But
was his intent to kill, or did it just go
further than he thought. Thats going
to be the trick for the court.
A preliminary hearing on the
matter is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
Tuesday before Judge Niese in
Putnam County Municipal Court.
