Entered through security to meet with internship

supervisor for the first time in person and was
escorted to Human Resources for security processing.
Filled out numerous security papers along with being
investigated and fingerprinted for a temporary ID for
the summer.
11:45 am - Observed a live 5-minute television segment called

the Fast Five. Introduced and met several of the
people in charge of the program and a fellow intern.
12:00 pm Embarked on a tour of the Voice of America building

with the fellow intern who had been on board for just
a week before I arrived. Met various people in the
newsrooms throughout the facility and learned about
what the daily potential tasks would be.
2:30 pm Observed a live segment broadcasting of Hashtag VOA

in the control room. This particular segment was on
the subject of Mt. Everest and several people who had
climbed up to the summit several times, including the
woman who holds a world record for most climbs.

Observed a post-mortem meeting with the news
anchors and the shows leaders. Spent time getting to
know the other interns who I would be working with

Essentially my first day of my internship was one that was
filled with a lot of security screenings and observations. I
was able to get the general feel of how Voice of America
functioned in terms of the Fast Five daily show and the
weekly Hashtag VOA show. Although no work was actually
completed or assigned just yet, it is only the beginning. One
new information item that I learned today was that the
Voice of America building emulates a miniature United
Nations in which multiple countries are represented in
various newsrooms located throughout the building. It is a
truly global and multicultural workplace.

8:30 am Met with my fellow interns and was welcomed by our

Supervisor. We had transcribing tasks delegated and I
was responsible for transcribing the second segment
of a 30-minute show. I was able to transcribe a great
portion of the show before heading over for the daily
broadcast of the Fast Five.
10:15 am Entered one of the studios in which the Fast Five live

show was prepping before going on the air. Met and
interacted with the news anchor of the show and the
supporting staff. I was assigned to run the
teleprompter during a practice run before going live
on the air. I was the one running the teleprompter for
the actual live broadcasting of the Fast Five and
worked successfully thanks to my prior experience.
Interacted with the show producers and discussed
the shows topics of the day.
12:15 pm Finished transcribing the second segment of the

Hashtag VOA show and sent it to be delivered to the
other language departments to be translated for
captions in multiple languages around the world. I
was able to successfully transcribe a piece for the first
time and received good feedback on my work.

Today was a day that went a lot smoother and I actually got
to complete tasks and assignments. I was in charge of
transcribing part of a 30 minute Hashtag VOA episode and
did so successfully and what I transcribed will be sent to
other language departments to be translated and
captioned around the world. Further more I was able to
teleprompt for a live broadcasting of the Fast Five news
segment that was something I had never done before
especially in a live setting. Most of my teleprompter work
was done during studio recording sessions in which we
could go back if there were any mistakes. One new
information item that I learned would be that what I
transcribed would be used to translate into various
languages so that audio dubs wouldnt be necessary and
English language learners could follow along with their
native language on the screen while still being able to hear
the English voice of the news anchor.

Today was a day that was filled with a lot of news research
and information preparing. I went in to the prep session
before the live broadcast of the daily Fast Five news
segment and ran the teleprompter for the rehearsal and
observed the actual live broadcast. Moving forward, I was
responsible for collecting various Facebook responses and
Tweets on the reactions to yesterdays digital short on
#TryBeatingMeLightly. Aside from collecting the
comments, I also researched the campaign extensively so
that all materials would be prepped and potentially used
for next weeks segment. Furthermore, I prepared several
Facebook posts and Tweets for last weeks Hashtag VOA
episode which included interviews and video clips of
several Mount Everest climbers including the world record
holder for a woman climbing Everest (7 times!). There
wasnt a single new thing I learned, instead there were
many! In particular today, I learned pretty much
everything about the #TryBeatingMeLightly campaign and
issue.

path. Attended my LEAD session in which we used the
sheet we completed in order to receive feedback from
our peers and complete an activity in class in which
we advised each other on potential career paths.
Participated in a class discussion on how our values
and skills are a key component to deciding our career
paths in the future.
2:30 pm Attended a Professional Track session in which we

had a guest speaker appear to talk with us. Our guest
speaker was Chris Geidner, a legal writer from
BuzzFeed who recently completed an exclusive
interview with President Barack Obama. Our
instructor began with his opening questions for Chris
to answer until the floor was opened for students to
ask their questions about Chriss career, how he got
to his position, and what it was like meeting and
talking with the President of the United States.

Although today was a day spent with The Washington
Center and not my internship, I still learned many
important things. I was able to work on finding potential
career paths and overall with Chris Geidner and my LEAD
instructor it was an enlightening day and experience. One
new information item that I was able to learn was during
the LEAD activity in which our peers would look at our
skills and values and suggest potential career paths. A
student suggested graffiti artist as a profession for me but I
interpreted it into a muralist. Back home in Philadelphia,
the mural arts are a big field and I could quite potentially
look into that area for potential careers.

9:00 am Met with fellow interns to discuss our duties for the

and met with our supervisor briefly to discuss what
was needed for the day and a bit about tomorrows
events since we will be at Hashtag VOA. Completed

order to receive a transit subsidy. Received and
activated my official Board of Broadcasting

to give a behind the scenes look of he show before
and during going on air. Rehearsed with the

Today was another day that was loaded with lots of show
preparations and show meetings. However, it was also a
day of a lot of interactions between my fellow interns and
all the other people involved with either the Fast Five or
Hashtag VOA. Overall, it felt like a great bonding day while
at the same time collecting information in preparation for
the upcoming big show tomorrow of Hashtag VOA. Its sure
to be an interesting episode since the photographer of the
#TryBeatingMeLightly campaign will be joining us. One
new information item that I was able to learn was that
Facebook has the new capability to broadcast live from a
device as simple as your smartphone. It was interesting
and remarkable to see how much technology has advanced
and how myself and my fellow interns with the Fast Five
crew were able to broadcast live from a phone during the
behind the scenes.

Met with fellow interns and entered a meeting with
10:30 am our supervisor to discuss todays plans with the
Hashtag VOA show. Learned how to set up the Skype
camera, audio feed for the camera, and how to record
the Skype call for when the video feed gets lots and
for audio snippets in post-production. Also learned
the studios light set up for the Skype interview
sessions. Attended a VOA Executive Producers
meeting and observed the interactions of the
producers related to the different news departments
at VOA.
10:30 am Prepared for the Daily Fast live broadcast. Interacted

broadcast occurred. Met with supervisor to go over
the assignments and roles that would need to be
fulfilled for todays live broadcast of Hashtag VOA. I
chose to be the teleprompter operator for the live
broadcast.

in order to relocate the studio and makeup room in
which Hashtag VOA would be live broadcasting in.
Prepared for the live broadcasting by preparing the
teleprompter for the hosts of the shows. Attended a
meeting with the show producer and news anchor
and observed how the anchor received feedback on
what questions to ask the shows guests. Learned how
to teleprompt for the live broadcast. Ran the actual
teleprompter for the anchors of the Hashtag VOA

producers, anchors, and crew in a post mortem
meeting to reflect and discuss how the show went.
Participated in a meeting that discussed what next
weeks show topic was about and was assigned to
research and collect information and images for the
topic of the Election in America and Africas opinion
on it.
Attended the first class session of The Washington
Center at the Associated Press to learn about Media
and the Moves. We learned about what the general
course would entail in focusing on Journalism Ethics
with Media in the Movies. We watched a film to learn
about ethical journalism vs. non-ethical journalism

Today was a pretty busy day that involved a lot of meetings
and lots of work to do. I was able to run the teleprompter
for the actual live broadcasting of the 30 minute long show,
Hashtag VOA. At first I felt a lot of pressure but after a
while of learning and getting the hang of it, it turned out to
be a breeze and I adapted quickly especially since I have a
lot of experience working with a teleprompter. One new
skill that I was able to learn was in operating the
teleprompter for a long broadcasted show format and
setting up all of the equipment for Skype interviews.

Today was a day that was a bit different to the routine that
I had briefly gotten used to so far with my time at Voice of
America. I was able to be the main teleprompter operator
during the rehearsal and live broadcast of the daily Fast
Five. However, a new system in which our live broadcast
would be linked to broadcasting through Facebook Live,
along with our normal live broadcasting, was
implemented. With this being said, there was a great
amount of people in the control booth watching over every
move to see if the broadcast would be successful and being
the teleprompter in that situation placed an amount of
pressure on me to succeed and I believe I did. One new skill
that I was able to learn was on how to set up the station in
the control room for the Fast Five to broadcast
simultaneous outlets including the new implementation of
the Facebook live feed.

Essentially, today had a fair amount of important meetings
with my supervisor and with a show producer who is in the
process of debuting a brand new show. I met a new
producer to collaborate and generate ideas for segments
and give feedback on the pilot episode itself. It seems as
though we will begin to work closely on another show that
is very exciting since its based and aimed towards a
younger audience and on whats trending in terms of the
topic of lifestyles. On another note, I was able to advise and
teach the teleprompter to a fellow intern. One new
information item that I learned was mainly about being
able to participate on a brand new show and being able to
develop it since its so new. I look forward to seeing where I
can assist with making it a successful show.

brand new story and a special where we focused only
on the event.

Overall today was a heavy day considering the Orlando
event. It was also a heavy day because a few technical
issues were encountered during the daily Fast Five live
broadcast. My tasks included various meetings,
observations, and troubleshooting. During the technical
issues, a suggestion I made was taken into consideration
and implemented. One new information item that I was
able to learn was that when things go dont go according to
plan such as technical issues, its best to keep a clear head
and make strong decisions in order to resolve it.

Analyzed with the producers and talent how the show
overall went and how the story was handled,
especially with a potentially controversial subject

the show could be. Reflected on the atmosphere of the
show during broadcasting considering there were
some technical difficulties. Discussed what needed to
be done for the next day including clipping bites of
the show and transcribing the show for international
audiences.
Attended my class for TWC named Media and the
Movies. We reflected very briefly on the journalism
and coverage of the Orlando shooting. We discussed
the ethics that Journalists face when it comes to
covering tragedies and tough subjects. Watched Ace
in the Hole to view one disgraced journalists
decisions of ethics when he finds that a man was
trapped inside of a cave.

I did not attend my internship today due to last
nights traumatic events at The Washington Center. A
fire alarm evacuation turned into what was believed
to be an active shooter situation in a matter of
seconds. Hundreds of TWC students and I scattered
away running for safety and our lives. After a period
of finding myself hiding in the basement level of the
building in the car garage with my roommates and a
few other students, we were informed it was safe and
that it was a paintball gun and not an active shooter.
The end result was that as students were evacuating,
a car drove by with paintball guns and began
shooting what was thought to be bullets at students,
but were actually paintball pellets. Several students
were injured but eventually we were allowed back
into the building and were told that an investigation
was underway.

One of the highlights of today would be that I had the
opportunity to shadow one of the video editors in the editing
bay located in the ground level of Voice of America. I was able
to collaborate and edit alongside the editor while he utilized
Avid and observe how Avid itself was used. My thoughts and
editing suggestions were taken into consideration to edit down
a half an hour interview into a 4-minute highlight package.
Additionally, I was able to talk about industry and business
standards when it came to editing and techniques I could work
on learning to improve my skill set. Aside from this I was able
