Voting purge raising eyebrows

How to register to vote:
OHIO A decades-old practice of purging inactive voters from Ohios voting rolls
has civil liberties organizations and, as of
Monday, the federal government crying
foul.
In April, Ohio A. Philip Randolph
Institute and the Northeast Ohio Coalition
for the Homeless filed suit in federal court in
Columbus. The suit challenged Secretary of
State Jon Husteds action that eliminates the
registration of an unspecified number of voters for failing to respond to address verification requests or who hadnt voted in the past
four years. Although Husteds actions were
upheld by U.S. District Judge George Smith
in a June 29 judgement, the plaintiffs, represented by the public policy group Demos and
the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio,
appealed to the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of
Appeals in Cincinnati.
On Monday, The U.S. Justice Department
weighed in on the subject. In a 64-page
pleading, the USDOJ asserted that Ohios
purging of voters for inactivity violates both
the National Voter Registration Act of 1993
and the Help America Vote Act of 2002. It
If a voters name has been removed

from the rolls, they must re-register 30
days before the election.
To register, Ohio residents may do so
by mail or in person.
Residents can obtain a voter registration form from:
-The office of the Secretary of State,
-Office of the county board of elections,
-Ohio BMV,
-public libraries,
-public high schools,
-county treasurers offices, or
-on the Ohio Secretary of State website.
Registration forms can be turned in at
any of the above mentioned places, unless
they are printed from the Internet.
For forms that are being mailed, they
can be sent to the county board of elections or the Secretary of States office.
The registration deadline for the Nov. 8
election is Oct. 11.
Businesses to receive NOAA radios
The Van Wert County Emergency Management is distributing free NOAA Weather
Alert Radios to all businesses in the City of Delphos. According to EMA Director Rick
McCoy, a federal and state grant was awarded in the amount of $14,000 to purchase

second annual Hometown Christmas commemorative postmark. This year, however, the museum is asking the Delphos

Napoleon man arraigned for murder/tampering with evidence

OTTAWA On Tuesday, Travis D.
Soto, 30, Napoleon, appeared in Putnam
County Municipal Court for a preliminary hearing on charges related to the
death of his 2-year old son, Julio SotoBaldoza, in 2006. Soto appeared before
Municipal Court Judge Chad C. Niese
with his court-appointed defense attorney,
Joe Benavidez. Not surprisingly, given
the weight of the States evidence against
him, the defendants own confession, Soto

waived his right to a preliminary hearing.
Originally charged with voluntary manslaughter, Soto pleaded guilty on July 6,
2006, to child endangerment in a plea deal
that eliminated the initial charge. Judge
Randall Basinger sentenced Soto to the
maximum allowable: five years in prison
and a $10,000 fine.
Then, a little over 10 years later, Soto
sought out local law enforcement to
cleanse his soul about the events that
took the life of his son.
He voluntarily came into our office
and asked to talk to somebody, Sheriff

Tim Meyer explained. He said he wanted
to confess to a murder.
Based on the statements Soto made
to Meyer and Detective Sergeant Roy
Sargent at the Putnam County Sheriffs
Office on Monday, July 25, Putnam
County Prosecutor Gary Lammers filed
murder and tampering with evidence
charges against Soto on Tuesday, July 26.
During his arraignment last Thursday,
Soto often appeared unclear as to both
the nature and the severity of the charges
against him, repeatedly asking Judge
Niese for clarification and expressing the

need for release so as to return to work.
At that time, Assistant County Prosecutor
Todd Schroeder requested and Judge Niese
approved a cash or surety bond in the
amount of $500,000.
During his preliminary hearing,
Benavidez addressed the court with regard
to Sotos bond, informing the judge that
his client is in danger of losing his employment with Campbell Soup Company,
Napoleon.

POLICE REPORTS
Information Submitted
DELPHOS On Monday, officers responded to a business in the 900 block of East Fifth Street after receiving a
complaint of a counterfeit bill being used to make a purchase. The incident remains under investigation.
On Monday, officers were dispatched to the 700 block
of East Fifth Street, in reference to two females involved
in an altercation. Officers arrived and spoke with each
female. Neither party wished to pursue charges.
On Monday, officers took a report from a female in the
800 block of West Clime Street. The female reported that
her juvenile son had left the residence after being told not
to and that he has been habitually unruly. It was not determined if charges will be filed.
On Tuesday, a female complainant came to the police
department to report a domestic violence incident. The
female told officers that her mother and her mothers boyfriend had assaulted her at a residence in the 200 block of
West Third Street. After investigating the incident officers
found probable cause to arrest 43-year-old Melissa Pax
of Delphos for causing physical harm to her daughter. A
male, 52-year-old John Shoe, was arrested on an unrelated warrant out of Mercer County. Pax was transported to
the Van Wert County Jail while Shoe was turned over to
Celina Police Department. A warrant was then obtained
on Shoe for complicity to domestic violence. Both Pax
and Shoe will appear in Van Wert Municipal Court to face
the charges.
On Tuesday, officers were dispatched to meet with a
female who was the victim of a domestic violence assault.
The female told officers that she was assaulted by her
live-in boyfriend at their residence in the 1100 block of
South Clay Street. The female had visible injuries that
were treated at Delphos Ambulatory Care Center. Officers
located the male, 39-year-old Eric Kangas of Delphos,
the following morning and took him into custody. He was
transported to the Van Wert County Jail.
On Wednesday, officers took a report from a male in the
800 block of West Skinner Street. The male told officers
that an item was stolen from his yard at an unknown time.
On Wednesday, officers were sent to the 400 block of
South Clay Street to investigate a reported criminal damaging incident. Officers met with a male at the residence,
who stated that his now ex-girlfriend had moved out of
the residence and had caused damage to some of his items.
Officers advised the male that the incident was a civil
issue that would have to be addressed in civil court.
On Wednesday, officers took a report from a male in
reference to a theft incident. The male told officers that
his vehicle was parked unattended at Stadium Park for a
short amount of time. Upon returning to his vehicle, the
complainant found that someone had entered his vehicle
and removed his wallet. The incident remains under investigation.
On Wednesday, officers were sent to the 300 block of
South Main Street in reference to a theft/lost property
incident. A male at the residence told officers that he had
been at a business on West Fifth Street, where he believed
he lost his wallet. The wallet was not located and had not
been turned in.
On Thursday, officers were made aware of a possible
domestic assault that occurred in the 200 block of West
Clime Street on Wednesday. Officers met with a male and
a female at a residence in this area and discovered that a
dispute had occurred but there was no physical violence.
No charges will be pursued.

Allen County reports one fatal traffic incident in July

LIMA The Lima-Allen County Safe
Community Coalition reports there was one
fatal traffic crash on Allen County roadways
during the month of July. During the first
seven months of 2016, there have been three
(3) fatal crashes, resulting in four (4) fatalities. In 2015, during the same 7-month period,
there were six (6) fatal crashes, resulting in six

(6) fatalities.
According to the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration, each traffic fatality has
a comprehensive cost of $5,377,365. Total
comprehensive costs for 2016 Allen County
fatal crashes are $21,509,460.

Fresh produce fills the bill on this pizza night.
Garden Pizza
1 loaf (1 pound) frozen bread dough, thawed
6 slices part-skim mozzarella cheese
1 can (8 ounces) pizza sauce
2 cups (8 ounces) shredded part-skim mozzarella
cheese, divided
1/2 cup each finely chopped fresh cauliflowerets,
mushrooms and broccoli florets
1/4 cup each finely chopped red onion, green
pepper and sweet red pepper
1/2 cup pickled pepper rings
Roll dough into a 15-in. circle. Transfer to a
greased 14-in. pizza pan, building up edges slightly.
Place cheese slices on dough. Spread sauce over
cheese. Sprinkle with 1 cup shredded cheese, cauliflower, mushrooms, broccoli, onion, peppers and
pepper rings.
Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes. Sprinkle
with remaining cheese. Bake 5-10 minutes longer
or until cheese is melted and crust is golden brown.
Peanut Butter Dessert
1 cup peanut butter
2 cups powdered sugar
2 boxes vanilla pudding
4-1/2 cups Cool Whip
Mix together peanut butter and powdered sugar
until crumbly. Spread 3/4 of mixture in bottom of
casserole dish. Prepare two boxes of vanilla pudding
per directions and spread over crumb mixture. Once
firm, spread cool whip over pudding and garnish
with remaining crumbs. Chill and serve.
Corn heat stress
The following article was written by Dr. Peter Thomison,

OSU corn specialist
(C.O.R.N. Newsletter, 2016-22). Throughout northern
Ohio, there are corn fields exhibiting drought and temperature stress. Leaf rolling is common and uneven, stunted corn
growth is widespread. Most of these stressed corn fields are
at a stage of development that is especially susceptible to
drought and high temperature injury pollination.
High temperature stress is usually associated with
drought. Heat stress and drought intensify damage to corn
and soybean but either may cause major crop injury alone.
The recent high temperatures have generated questions
about the impact of high temperatures on corn. How much
heat stress can these crops withstand without incurring major
yield losses even when adequate soil moisture is available?
Corn originated as a tropical grass and can tolerate exposures to adverse temperatures as high as 112 degrees F for
brief periods. Optimal daytime temperatures for corn typically range between 77 degrees F and 91 degrees. Growth
decreases when temperatures exceed 95 degrees F.
University of Illinois agronomist Dr. Emerson Nafziger
notes that afternoon temperatures in the mid-90s are not
a problem for corn.. if they have enough soil water
available. . plant temperatures have been raised to 110
or higher without doing direct damage to photosynthetic
capacity. The level required to damage leaves depends on
the temperature the leaf has experienced before, but it generally takes temperatures above 100 in field-grown plants.
According to Iowa State University agronomists, high
temperatures may have a double impact on corn The first
is the increase in rolling of corn leaves in response to moisture deficiency. By rule-of-thumb, the yield is diminished
by 1% for every 12 hours of leaf rolling - except during the
week of silking when the yield is cut 1 percent per 4 hours
of leaf rolling. .The second impact is less obvious initially. When soil moisture is sufficient, as it is for the most
part this July, the crop does not have a measurable yield
response to one day of temperatures between 93F to 98 F.
However, the fourth consecutive day with a maximum temperature of 93F or above results in a 1% yield loss in addition to that computed from the leaf rolling. The fifth day
there is an additional 2% loss; the sixth day an additional
4% loss. Data are not sufficient to make generalizations for
a heat wave of more than six days, however firing of leaves
then becomes likely and very large yield losses are incurred.
Generally a six-day heat wave at silking time is sufficient to
assure a yield not to exceed trend. Some corn agronomists
believe newer corn hybrids may have more tolerance to heat
and drought than the hybrids did when this rule of thumb
was originated.
Are corn hybrids that show greater leaf rolling more susceptible to drought injury than other less affected hybrids?
Not necessarily. In a recent OSU evaluation comparing two
drought tolerant and two drought sensitive hybrids, differences in leaf rolling were not readily evident. However, they
were observed at Hoytville, OH in 2012, a site-year that
experienced severe drought stress. Leaf rolling ratings for
the drought tolerant hybrids were lower or about the same
as the drought sensitive hybrids. However, other types of
drought tolerant hybrids may express difference leaf rolling
responses.

start at the Soil Health Agricultural Research Plot (SHARP)
site across from the landfill with Jim Hoorman talking about
the Soil Health site and John Bormuth from Legacy talking
about the Nutrient Toolbar. At 10:00 AM, participants will
be taken to see a Two-Stage Ditch at Bill Oedys farm and
Albert Maag, PSWCD and Kayla Miller, OSU will discuss
water monitoring results. At 11:00AM, Venekotters Swine
operation will be visited with presentations by Curt Tobe,
PSWCD on Senate Bill 1, Brian Schroeder, Cooper Farms,
and Glen Arnold, OSU on Manure Management equipment.
The final stop will be at the Ellerbrock and Welch Hops site
to discuss the Ohio HOPS Union. Speakers will be Scott
Welch and Brad Ellerbrock, owners and operators. The
Hops will be harvested in late July and early August. The
tour will return to the Ag Center at 12:30. Participants will
also see the I-9 bridge and flood mitigation and Blanchard

of your garden.
Cabbage Sausage Soup
4 cups water
1 tablespoon chicken soup
base
1 small cabbage, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
1/2 pound smoked sausage, fully cooked
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 cup milk
1/2 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon pepper
Velveeta cheese to taste
Bring water, soup base,
cabbage, and onion to a boil.
Reduce heat; cover and simmer until cabbage is tender.
Halve sausage lengthwise
and slice. Add sausage and
heat through. Combine flour,
salt, pepper, and milk in a
gravy shaker. Shake until
smooth; gradually stir into
soup. Bring to a boil; cook
and stir until thickened. Add
cheese to taste.

Fourth-year senior Kaleb Hanicq,
sophomore Dylan Kemper and classmate Ethan Geise also hope to step up
their games with a year under their belts
of varsity golf.
He has to replace a duo of graduated players in Brendan Schnipke (3
letters) and Isaiah Miller (2 letters),

so he is looking at a quartet of young
but promising newcomers in sophomore
Zach Knippen, sophomore Tyler Birr,
freshman Evan Turnwald and classmate
Hannah Hoehn.
We will be a very young team but
we do return a District qualifier, he
said. We will be looking for all the kids
to continue to improve as the season
goes on.

the top. Our goal is to improve every day
and I think we can win our conference
and make a tournament run.

My daughter has some put limits on
me when it comes to buying clothes
for my grandkids. It seems she doesnt
want any clothes or T-shirts with sayings or slogans which she will have to
explain to people. Like Got Karma?
or I look like my doctor (FYIDad
is a doctor, so whats wrong with that!)
That had me thinking about T-shirts
with sayings in general.
My husbands favorite is a nondescript black T-shirt that simply states
Listen to Bob. It leads to many interesting conversations.
Hey Bob! Chicken or beef? Gotta
listen to Bob!
Hey Bob! Should I buy or lease?
Listen to Bob!
Hey Bob! Hillary or Donald? Listen towell maybe make your own
mind up on that one.
Vacation T-shirts. Who hasnt
bought those? You HAVE to! Its like
putting those little red tacks on a map
to show all the places you have visited.
Only this is a way to show the entire
world youve been to Vegas or Niagara Falls or Disneyworld. Drag out the
T-shirt, remember the adventure, remember the fun.
Personally, we usually try to avoid
buying T-shirts with lots of flashy

T-shirt pocket is just enough. So on a
recent trip to Florida, Bob decided to
pick up a shirt he spied on a shelf at
a restaurant we frequent on our visits.
Very conservative style - name of the
restaurant in small lettering on the lefthand side of this folded T-shirt. Perfect. He buys it, brings it back to Ohio,
puts it on and stretched across his
back, from shoulder to shoulder, is this
giant crocodile-like monster creature
gobbling up a wharf with a Where the
locals eat emblazoned across a roped
background. I laughed, he did not.
Yep, quite an attention grabber. Now I
have to get a T-shirt that says I had no
idea he was buying such a ridiculous
t-shirt with, of course, the obligatory
arrow pointing to him.
T-shirts make great entertainment
when you are people-watching. You
learn an awful lot about passersby in
a very short time. You know where
they have visited (Id rather be in Hawaii). Know where or what they eat
(Becoming a vegetarian was a huge
missed steak). Have a sneak peak
into some of their bad habits (I was
addicted to Hokey Pokey, now Ive
turned myself around) and how they
feel about certain political figures (Al
Bundy for President!).
I especially like the I survived

series. Some are very encouraging
and uplifting, I survived cancer, I
survived law school, I survived the
blizzard of 78. They give us hope
and encourage the conversation of the
T-shirt. They make us ask questions,
relay our stories, offer congratulations.
Then we have the I survived Dans
bachelor partybarely, I survived
my wifes cooking, I survived the
zombie apocalypse.
You have to read the shirts, then you
have to say huh? Did Dan leave you
on a rooftop for three days with no ladder and no food? Did your wife cook
you tuna and Brussels sprout cheesecake? When was the apocalypse? Hey,
Im still here, I must have survived
that, too!
Theres lots of fun to be had wearing
your favorite saying. Its an entertaining way to express your feelings and
I encourage everyone to go out and
choose something that says something
about you in a very unique way. I did
find one T-shirt for me that is very appropriate and is on my must buy list.
It says all I need to say in one sentence:
MY HUSBANDS WIFE IS FREAKING AWESOME!

There must be better ways

to spend a hot summer day than
chasing a little pit-ted
white
ball. In fact, theres a
similar
game wherein the ball is six times
larger and ringed with colorful
stripes. Both options require the
striking of a ball with a mallet,
but one game is spread out over a
large expanse of green dotted with
hazards, including a dress code of
madras pants and polos. For the
other, you can wear a large floppy
hat, t-shirt and cutoffs and never
leave the front yard.
The upside of the tiny white ball/ Anne Coburn-Griffis
big course version is that people get
really excited about playing it and are willing to spend a lot of money doing it. For this reason, high summer is the season for fundraising on the green.
I participated in a charity golf outing last week. By participating, I mean that I walked around the course, took photos and tweeted. Since I am the person who stands in the outfield, watches butterflies and finds figures in the clouds while involved in just about any
team sport, no one wanted me to do otherwise. But I was in for the

Can we survive Clinton or Trump?

On July 28, we witnessed a very important historical event. For the first time
in Americas 240-year history, we watched
a woman, Hillary Clinton, accept the Democratic presidential nomination in Philadelphia. It was another milestone, another barrier broken and another crack in the
glass ceiling.
Jeanette Rankin was the first woman
elected to Congress in 1916. Women won
the right to vote in 1920 (96 years ago).
Nancy Pelosi was elected Speaker of the
House in 2007. It is also noteworthy that
Hillary Clinton could be the first spouse
of a former president (Bill Clinton) to be
elected to the highest office in America.
In about 90 days, Nov. 8, the newly
elected president will be either 69 or 70.
This follows a stretch of presidents who
were in their 40s and 50s. Im not sure
what that means but it must mean something.
Yet, the landmark occasion is tempered
by the fact most major national polls say
56 percent of Americans have unfavorable
opinions of both parties candidatesHillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Americans
simply dont like these two candidates.
Id guess as many as 60 percent of
Americans will be unhappy no matter
which one wins on Nov. 8 and when they
take office in January 2017 well have
more of the same divisiveness and rancor
as weve had the last 16 years.
When will we hit rock bottom with the
political rhetoric? How are we going to
make things better when the choice is between two imperfect nominees? Voters are
mostly dissatisfied with the status quo. A
recent NBC/WSJ survey found 56 percent

want our next president to bring major
changes to the way government operates.
A recent Pew Research Center poll said
71 percent of Americans feel the country
has been on the wrong track. Thats a clear
repudiation of the Washington political
class.
How does the public describe Trump?
They say he has alienated tens of millions
of people, lacks decency, lacks empathy, is
without a moral compass, doesnt have the
temperament or the character for the job.
They dont like his unfiltered bravado, his
arrogance and they question if hes fit to
assume the immense duties and responsibilities of being president.
While she might appear to be better
qualified, Clintons critics raise serious
questions about her 40-year pattern of dishonesty, corruption, bad judgment and her
trust issues. Maybe those traits do make
her better qualified to be president? Its a
down-and-dirty job and isnt for the meek
or timid.
Several weeks ago, President Barack
Obama raised eyebrows when he proclaimed Clinton the most qualified man or
woman to ever be nominated to be president. Not to be upstaged, Trump says hes
the best ever.
What has been made clear, after eight
years of the Obama Administration, Americans are ready for change. Clinton has basically said she will be the third term of
Obama and continue many of his programs
and policies. She has been forced to adopt
some more progressive positions to pander
to the Bernie Sanders supporters.

was a huge success. We estimate close to 500 people from the
community came out to the park to enjoy the evening, which
included food, games and swimming.
National Night Out has been going on for 33 years across
the country, military bases and Canada. 2016 was the first time
Delphos participated. I would like to make this an annual event
in Delphos.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you the businesses for their generous support of this event. Community
events such as this would not be possible without the support

popular category. Few can resist chicken tenders, which make for popular pub fare and great
additions to any buffet table at informal gatherings of friends and family.
While many people only indulge in chicken tenders when theyre out of the house, this
simple, beloved dish can be enjoyed at home as well. The following recipe for Pecan-Crusted Chicken Tenders with Yogurt Dill Dip from Michelle Dudashs Clean Eating for Busy
Families (Fair Winds Press) is a delicious, low-calorie alternative to the fried chicken tenders
available at many bars and restaurants.
Pecan-Crusted Chicken Tenders with Yogurt Dill Dip
Serves 4
For the chicken:

To make the chicken:

Preheat the oven to 475 F and line a sheet pan with parchment paper. Whir pecans, flour, paprika, dry mustard, garlic and onion powder, salt, and pepper in a food processor until pecans
are ground to a powder, about 30 seconds. Drizzle in the oil with the motor running, blending
completely. Transfer mixture to a shallow dish and stir in the panko bread crumbs.
Beat the egg in a second shallow dish and add the chicken tenders, coating them completely.
Transfer each tender to the breading, turning to coat evenly. Arrange the chicken on the prepared pan. Bake until golden brown and nearly firm, about 8 minutes.
To make the dip: Stir all the dip ingredients together in a small bowl.
Enjoy the cooked chicken immediately with the dip.
Note: Chicken tenders come from the undersides of chicken breasts and are naturally portioned into strips, saving you time in cutting them. If you dont have chicken tenders, substitute chicken breasts cut into 4- x 1-inch strips.

What would a Marbletown Festival be
without a few of its namesakes to enjoy the
fun. Margie Marble, great-granddaughter of
Col. J.M.C. Marble, and two of her children,
Baird Marble and Cecily (Marble) Hintzen of
California, joined the festival committee and
city officials at the Topp Chalet Friday evening
for pizza and a run-down on Saturdays activities.
A St. Johns Blue Jay pennant that once
flew in space has landed back home. The pennant was purchased from the bookstore in the
high school in the mid-50s by Marie (Buettner)
Fullerton. The sign of school spirit returned
to St. Johns Sunday during Mass when Marie
and her husband and former astronaut, Gordon
Fullerton, presented the item to the St. Johns
Alumni Association.
The Delphos Chevrolet Reds completed
their perfect season by defeating the Pirates
in the City League championship game. Team
members are Zach Kimmett, Drew Kortokrax,
Austin Lee, bat boy Gunnar Lucius, Josh Rode,
batboy Robbie Ruscher, Cody Bigelow, Curtis
Miller, Jacob Hays, Mark Boggs, Ryan Buscher,

Shawn Vandemark and Aaron Crider of Elida
Future Farmers of America were greeted in
Washington, D.C. by Matt Lohr of Broadway,
Va., national FFA Eastern Region vice president. Vandemark and Crider attended the weeklong National FFA Washington Conference
Program. The trip was sponsored by the chapter
and the Elida Young Farmers.
Michelle Calvelage and Amy Grote of the
Ottoville Up-to-Date 4-H Club modeled the
garments they made by hand. They will be participating in the Ohio State Fair Style Review
to be held Aug. 14 in Columbus. Michelle is
the daughter of Dale and Marilyn Calvelage of
Fort Jennings. Amy is the daughter of John and
Marie Grote of Cloverdale.
Delphos Bass Club had its first tournament
on Indian Lake. Winners were Tim Teman, third
with three fish weighing 3 pounds, 2 ounces;
Norm Kunz, second with four fish weighing 5
pounds, 3 ounces; and Ronald Moreo, first with
seven fish weighing 7 pounds, 15 ounces. Next
tournament will be at St. Marys Lake.
35 Years Ago 1981
Delphos Senior Citizens recently paid off
a $15,000 mortgage on their multi-purpose
center on Suthoff Street. Members of the original building committee burned a copy of the
mortgage Wednesday at the groups monthly
meeting. Committee members are John Fischer,

Cletus Hickey, Richard Grothause, Nick Pothast
and Andy Vorst, chairman. The building was
bought Oct. 17, 1978, from Robert Grubenhoff.
Top money raisers from Delphos swimming
pools participation in the American Cancer
Society swim-a-long were presented medals Wednesday in Lima by the Allen County
Chapter. Collecting the most money were De
Ette Sanders, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chris
Martin, with $108; Kim Rupert, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Larry Rupert, with $84; and Lynn
Grothouse, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph
Grothouse, with $64.
50 Years Ago 1966
Ronald Benroth of Columbus Grove won
the 4-H Tractor Rodeo for the second year in a
row. His brother, Bruce Benroth, placed second
and Dennis Siefker of Columbus Grove placed
third. Bruce will represent Putnam County in
the state contest this year since he placed second and Ronald cannot go to state for two years
in a row.
Bobby Ulm, son of Mr. and Mrs. William
Ulm, Suthoff Street, will appear on the Venata
Bach talent show Thursday afternoon at the
Auglaize County Fair at Wapakoneta. Bob,
who will play the organ and sing, will be one
of approximately 20 acts on the program. The
winner will receive a trip to New York and will
have a chance to appear on the Ted Mack amateur hour.
Word has been received here that Dan
Cramer, former Delphos St. Johns pitching
star, is having a successful session with the
Oregon Emeralds, a Philadelphia Phillies ball
team. Cramer has won his last four games,
giving him six wins, two losses for the season.
He is expected back in Delphos around Sept. 5.
Dan is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cramer,
South Clay Street.
60 Years Ago 1956
The Delphos City baseball team eked out
another one-point margin victory here again
Sunday by defeating the Glandorf nine, 8-7, in
a West Central League contest. The Delphos
boys went into the last of the ninth trailing 7-5,
but they made a walk and four hits count for
three scores. Paul Dienstberger was walked,
Hageman singled as did Whiz Youngpeter and
Dienstberger and Hageman scoring to tie the
game. Craig drove in Whiz Youngpeter for the
winning run.
Officers nominated to serve the Delphos
Friends of the Library for the year 1957 were
announced Monday by Mrs. George Helmkamp,
chairman of the nominating committee. The
officers nominated are Mrs. Ralph Weger, president; Ethel Hart, vice president; Rosemary

75 Years Ago 1941
The members of the Ladies Auxiliary of
Walterick Hemme Post No. 3035, Veterans of
Foreign Wars, will sponsor a three-act comedy
at the Jefferson auditorium at 8 p.m. Friday
night. The proceeds will be used to further the
work of the auxiliary in aiding veterans and
their families. The cast includes Bette Beckman,
Hilda Metzner, Gerald Will, Robert Ott, Ann
Clark, Martha Wurst, Majorie Remlinger, Anna
Youngpeter and Don Weideman.
The Delphos Recreation Board was forced
Thursday to close the new Delphos swimming
pool until such time as a remedy can be found
for a peculiar situation which exists at that
place. Wind from the northeast blowing soot
onto the surface of the water has accumulated a
thick layer of soot, especially at the west edge
of the pool. The pool was constructed that foreign particles would run off in the scum gutter
if there was ample water supply. The supply is
limited now due in part to dry weather and part
to the heavy use at the St. Marys Packing Plant.
The Landeck Greys baseball team will meet
one of their strongest opponents to date Sunday
afternoon on their diamond at the Neimeyer
farm, southeast of Landeck, when they clash
with the Five Acres team from Lima. Either
Haunhorst or Sever will do the hurling for the
Greys with B. Hesseling slated to hold forth
behind the bat. A public address system will
be in use and refreshments will be sold on the
grounds.

of State Jon Husted on
Wednesday announced the
release of $760,000 in funds
for the states 88 counties to
help offset the cost of mandatory poll worker training
for county boards of elections.
Van Wert with 19,343 registered voters as of July 14,
2016, will receive $1,915.66
for the training of poll workers.
Mercer County with
28,538 registered voters will
receive $2,826.30, Paulding
County with 12,572 registered
voters will receive $1,245.09,
and Allen County with 67,664
registered voters will receive
$6,701.21.
The largest amount is
going to Cuyahoga County
with 866,243 registered voters
in the amount of $85,789.68.
Properly trained poll
workers are a critical part of
ensuring that our elections
run smoothly and voters
have a positive experience,
Secretary Husted said. These
funds will ensure that come
Election Day Ohios poll
workers are ready.
Under state law, poll workers are required to participate
in an education program that
instructs them as to the rules,
procedures and law pertaining to elections administration in Ohio. New poll workers must go through training before working the polls,
while those who have previously served only need to go
through retraining a minimum
of once every three years. The
June directive ensures all poll
workers are ready for the 2016
Presidential Election.
Each county will receive
an amount based on the number of registered voters in
that county. This funding will
provide for the mandatory
training each poll worker is
required to complete under
state law. These funds help
offset the cost associated with
training poll workers for county boards of elections, which
are facing tighter budgets.
To date, the Secretary of
States office has awarded
nearly $2.3 million to ensure
individuals staffing polling
locations are properly trained
ahead of Election Day so voters have a positive experience.
The Secretary of States
office also assists with the
recruitment of new poll workers through PEOinOhio.com.

tools and resources for county
boards of elections and poll
workers alike, as well as an
online sign-up for Ohioans
to become poll workers. To
date, more than 11,200 people

VAN WERT The 10th Van Wert Rib Fest will not only
feature fall-off-the-bone ribs but also one of the most entertaining country groups to ever grace the Ohio area Mustang
Sally, who will take the stage at 8 p.m. today.
The core of Mustang Sally has been together nearly a
decade and lead singer Tobi Lee says the relationship the group
has established with each other over the years is equal to that
of a family.

the world, sharing stages with
award-winning
Mustang Sally
hit-makers such as
Big & Rich, Montgomery Gentry, Gretchen Wilson and
Blake Shelton. From California to the Northeast to Europe,
Switzerland and Asia, the group has performed at biker rallies,
casinos, fairs and festivals. Mustang Sally has even performed
at the ACMs in Las Vegas, Starke Bike Fest, White Rose

Jamboree, and that is just a small list.
No matter the size of the venue or the crowd, Lee says the
group puts all they have into every show in an attempt to make
it their best performance yet.
Weve been lucky enough to tour around the entire world,
she said. Every show in its own aspect has something unique
to it because every crowd is different. Every night something
kind of cool happens that you take with you and say I did my
job tonight, that was fun.
In the decade that the group has been together, things have
certainly changed, but one thing for Lee has not changed and
that is her love for performing.

Its not easy to pack up a suitcase and be gone 230 days of
the year, she said. But I still love it as if it was the first day
I ever walked on stage at 4 years old. I still feel like that little
kid when I hit the stage.

Mustang Sally has essentially made Ohio its home this
summer as they have been playing multi-day stretches at PutIn-Bay all summer long. Lee says the relationship they have
established with the popular destination has been incredible.
Last night I got handed a note that literally said Put-InBay would not be without Mustang Sally and I looked out and
said Mustang Sally would not be without Put-In-Bay. Thats
the kind of relationship weve established with that island,
Lee said.
Arguably, the most unique aspect of Mustang Sally is that
they are primarily a woman-dominated group, which is a rarity
in music. Lee says the group does not let the fact that they are
mainly female change anything.
Honestly I dont think its about being male or female; I think
its just talent and respect, she said. Its cool being in a group
with women because if you forget anything, youve got people to
borrow clothes from. We cant borrow outfits from men.
To anyone that has never seen a Mustang Sally show live,
Lee says to expect just about anything to happen.
Expect anything, she said. We never know whats going
to happen. We can have a full show written out and depending
on the crowd well do whatever it takes. We dont even know
whats going to happen during our shows.

June 4.04 inches; and July
3.58 inches for a total of
14.91 inches, McCoy began.
During this particularly dry
season, April received 1.88
inches; May 2.60 inches;
June 2.19 inches; and July
1.86 for a total of 8.53 inches,
which is 6.38 inches below
normal.
Postmark
The director said what is
really interesting is the comparison from last year when
the area was inundated with
rainfall.
The 2015 season included April 3.51 inches; May
5.43 inches; June 15.71
inches; and July 7.92 inches
for a total of 32.57 inches.

received last year compared
to this year in the same time
frame, McCoy said.

and keep in mind that it will be considerably
reduced in size for the final postmark.
All artwork will be displayed at the Museum
of Postal History beginning on Saturday, Sept.
10, and running through Saturday, Sept. 17,
during Canal Days. Visitors can review the
artwork and vote for their favorite. The votes

will be tallied at the conclusion of the exhibit
and the winner will be chosen for the 2016
Hometown Christmas postmark. In case of a
tie, the Museum Board of Directors will vote
to break the tie.
Artwork can be dropped off at the Museum
of Postal History, 339 N. Main St., Delphos,
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through
Saturday. Include your name, address and
phone number on each submission.
