The Barwon Heads Cricket Club has not always been in the envious position it is now. There have been times when the club was in real peril.
Luckily in most of those times people of high standing have stood up and taken responsibility for straightening out the mess.
Sometimes that mess has been on the field and a few times it's been off it.
Life has a habit of inviting you to get involved. It's usually not a lithographed, gold embossed invitation on parchment, delivered a suitable number of weeks
before the event with date, time and place clearly enunciated and requiring an RSVP. Mostly life's invitations are subtle, slightly hidden or just down right
disguised. You need to be on the lookout for them, acutely attuned to them and ready to take a left turn at Albuquerque in order to make the most of them and in
most of our lives many of them never get our attention, even when we are astute enough to see them for what they are.

Our July meeting (usually a

few of us huddled around the
heater) was fantastic.
Thank you to our members and new faces who came
to discuss the Barwon Heads Structure Plan 2010 and
the future of our town. We have a close relationship
with Save Barwon Heads Alliance, which established
in 2007 with the sole purpose of protecting the
western boundary and wetlands from development.
We share committee members and are working
closely on the Structure Plan review. How do we get
the balance right between development and protecting
our beautiful coastal village, our seaside culture, our
vibrant heritage and precious vegetation, and ensure
a sustainable future?
FUTURE PLANNING - The BHA has been active

in Barwon Heads for over 30 years. As part of our
planning for the review of the Structure Plan, we have
been reviewing past submissions. We are
disappointed that nearly all the good ideas and
proposals that were included in the 2010 Structure
Plan have been ignored. We have re-visited the Urban
Design Framework 2003 initiated by CoGG with
consultants plan i sphere. This framework was
prepared before the Bridge development, and the
growth that we are now witnessing. It seems as
relevant to day as it was in 2003. The framework
outlines a vision for Barwon Heads.
The vision summarises the community's
aspirations for the future of the township and
helped to canvass exactly what the urban design
framework should achieve.
A place that is defined by the natural landscape
features that surround it the Bellarine
Peninsula's island community
A town of diverse character where
development is largely nestled into the coastal
vegetation, or if it is not tucked away, it is
honeslty expressed and well designed
A place where the informal qualities are
retained, because it is these elements that give
the town its special character, and where the
interface of the town with the ocean, wetlands,
river and rural land demonstrates an
environmental sensitivity
A township where people can walk safely, and
experience a strong sense of nearness to the
water through buildings and vegetation that
highlight the coastal environment and unique
landforms
A place where a diverse and environmentally
aware community want to live and visit.

The framework was structured around the following
11 key themes and objectives:
Landscape setting to protect and strengthen the
relationship of the town to its landscape setting
Journey and Arrival to heighten the distinct
qualities of journey and arrival at the entrances of
the town
Edges to enhance the towns built interface with
the river, coast, open rural landscape and
wetlands. To provide environmental quality at the
interface of the built and natural environments
Built Form, Image and Character to reinforce the
unique unpolished, non-engineered and casual
qualities of Barwon Heads. To highlight the unique
layout of the town and strengthen the character of
built form throughout the township
The Centre of Town to sustain a thriving and
vibrant local centre
Open space and vegetation to enhance the
quality of public open space; to further strengthen
the vegetation character of the town and links to
the natural landscape; to strengthen regional biodiversity by protecting the environmental integrity
of the natural landscape flanking Barwon Heads
Community safety to improve personal safety
and the perception of safety
Cultural Heritage and Diversity to enhance
expression of cultural heritage through the natural
and built environment
Pedestrian and bicycle movement to improve
pedestrian and bicycle circulation and access
Pedestrian Safety, Traffic and Parking to
provide a safe, convenient and integrated system
Tourism to recognize and protect the key tourism
attributes and manage tourism growth
We are going around in circles. These exercises take up
a lot of community energy and resources. It is very
disappointing that our efforts are continually ignored.
The only beneficiaries appear to be consultants. Please
prepare yourselves to be involved again. (All documents

OH DEAR WHAT IS THE CITIZENS' JURY

which will be asked to consider how the Mayor,
Deputy Mayor and Councillors are elected, the
number of councillors required and how the
representative structure may look. The municipality
could be structured as one ward or divided into
multiple wards. The wards could be multi-member or
single member. The State Government has engaged
an independent company, New Democracy
Foundation, to establish the Citizens' Jury of 100
people, from around Geelong. This is a new form of
deliberative democracy that brings together
representative, random samples of citizens to discuss
possible approaches and solutions. This makes a
mockery of the recent VEC process and the time
devoted by a number of people and communities.
CADEL EVANS BIKE RIDE - the date is now

the Australia Day weekend. This is the biggest trading
weekend for our traders, there is considerable concern
that there has been no consultation and that it will
have a very negative impact on trading and access to
the town.

Wonderful Helpers
At the All Saints Op Shop we
certainly have a most
wonderful group of volunteers.
They turned up on even the most awful wet, cold days
during the July school holidays and coped with the sea of
mud that even with the drainage done two years ago we
had been unable to avoid.
Of course we need the rain, but there were times when it
was just TOO MUCH. Thank God for heaters, and an
occasional day when the sun shone, and the mud
retreated! It was good that we stocked rubber boots....or
perhaps gum boots is more accurate, since I doubt
that they are now really made of rubber.

Seeing the delight on a small boy jumping in the puddles
made me realise that kids dont mind the wet weather.
We managed to sell many other things to all our
customers, but the range of books we stock, their low
prices, plus the work put in by
our book team meant that
many people were happy to
sit with a book during the
miserable days. Please come
and see our huge range of all
kinds of books if you have not
already done so.

read and a cosy way for a foodie like me to spend cold

Of course we could not exist without our volunteers.
But we are equally grateful that we have other specially
kind helpers who do wonderful work for us.
Our Main Shop is now quite old, (built as a Sunday
School in the 1950s) and the fans attached to the ceiling
were just covered in dust.
None of our usual volunteers could have got up a ladder
to clean them, but kind Garry Sutton came and saved
the day.
Many groups to whom we donate offer their help, and we
recently asked James Ramage, a Soccer Club official,

for help in removing a pile of green rubbish. This job
was done very promptly, and was most appreciated.
Letters from both Barwon Heads and Connewarre
Fire Brigades also offered help, so we may call on them
as needed.
Then we have Alice and Bob Page, and John and Pat
Brady who take books we know will not sell, to the
recyclers
We rely on wonderful John Brady, and, when he is not
overseas, Don Everitt to take huge quantities of unsaleable items away. John delivers them to the Rotary
Donations In Kind organisation, which is an excellent
form of recycling, as they go off to third-world countries,
where they are much appreciated.
\To thank our volunteers and these other wonderful
people, we will have a Christmas In July Party at the
end of July. It was the great idea of our Social Committee
that each person who attends will receive a
ChrisKringle gift.
The plan is that each person buys and wraps a gift worth
less than $5. The stipulation is that gifts are bought at the
Op Shop....a win-win situation.
Naturally, the kind blokes whove rendered us such
important services will have gifts bought for them, as we
really do appreciate their efforts.

CANTORION CYMREIG
VICTORIAN WELSH MALE CHOIR
On Sunday July 10, Barwon Heads played host to the Victorian
Welsh Male Choir.
Twenty four members of the Choir, a Cor Bach, or small choir, led
by Director Faleiry Koczkar, gave us a brilliant two hours of wideranging chorale music, enough to warm every heart and to bring on
not a few tears on a chilly winter afternoon.
The packed Barwon Heads Hall was filled by their powerful male
voices.
First we were treated to a group of songs in Welsh and English,
showcasing traditional and modern Welsh composition. The stirring
What would I do without my Music expressed the passion of the
group.
We were then introduced to the four sections of the Choir: 1st & 2nd
Tenors, Baritones and Basses. It was both fascinating and
impressive to hear how the Director wove the four parts into a single harmonious entity. Roger Bartlett then gave us the moving Maria from West Side Story and Drew
Hopkins and Rushan Hewawasam sang the John Denver composition Perhaps Love. It was a sensitive rendition with glorious harmonies. The first half was rounded out
with a mixture of Welsh traditional and English melodies, including the stirring You'll Never Walk Alone, which has resounded around British soccer pitches for decades.
Finally we were invited to join the choir in the Battle Hymn of the Republic, which fairly lifted the roof.
After interval, we had another wonderful medley of Welsh songs, ending with the stirring Men of Harlech, in which again we were invited to participate, which we did with
gusto. This was followed by an amusing and melodious rendition of Ah Still Suits Me from Showboat, presented by John Hales and Geoff Serpell. The finale was a
wonderful selection from the popular Les Miserables, ending of course with the spine-tingling Do You Hear the People Sing? Whose heart could not be moved, and who
could hold back a tear to such fine singing?
The applause for the Cor Bach was long and heartfelt, and we were rewarded with an encore. It occurred to me that this is really just a group of everyday blokes with a
great passion for their music, and performing it with wonderful skills. This hard-working and very professional group thoroughly deserves their reputation, and it was a real
honour and thrill to have them perform for the Barwon Heads Fine Music Society. In turn, the group thanked us for welcoming them so warmly, and expressed their
appreciation of the excellent acoustics of the Barwon Heads Hall. No doubt we will have them back!
Our next concert will take place on Sunday August 14th at 2.30 pm, in All Saints Church. Our performers will be Claritude, a quartet of clarinettists. Their program is entitled
Sounds from the Screen.
What a contrast to this month, but that's what we are all about-presenting the people of Barwon Heads (and beyond) with diverse, high quality music.

2017 Enrolments
soon to be finalised
Families with students to be enrolled at Barwon Heads PS in
2017 are being urged to finalise their enrolments as soon as
possible.
With 2016 Foundation kids hitting the 100 days of school,
celebrations for this achievement were evident this week in the
excitement of our first year students. After encouraging
families wishing to enrol their child for 2017to do so during
term 2, BHPS now commenced planning for 2017 by
determining staff and room requirements based on the current
enrolment.
With planning well on the way accurate enrolment numbers
are essential in the smooth transition into the new school year.
Enrolment packs are available at Bop Bop and also at the
school office. Late enrolments have a significant impact on
grade sizes and staffing.

The Barwon Estuary is often

described as "dynamic".
Mind, alpine regions are also pretty
"dynamic" as too are rainforests,
deserts and off-shore islands.
So the Barwon Estuary is better described as a complex
wetland ecosystem allowing us to ignore the complexity
of alpine, desert and rainforest ecosystems and
concentrate on the wealth of habitat types that stretch
from Lake Connewarre to the sea- shallow lagoons, salt
marsh, tussocky grassland, gahnia thickets, tidal creeks,

moonah woodland, mangroves, spongy distichlis

swales, mudflats-sometimes exposed, sometimes not
but always damp, sea grass beds, sandy bottoms,
rocky substrate,and that bit near the mouth that a
churning incoming tide turns into some kind of psycho
laudramat speed queen. These habitats are subjected
to huge variations of tide,salt, wind, sand, mud, silt, heat
and cold that requires the plethora of plants, birds,
animals, fish and marine things to take on adaptions
that allow them to not only survive an ever changing
environment but to survive each other in an eat or be
eaten world. (It is amazing how many estuarine animals
pre-digest their food!)
Generally, carnivores tend to seek out and consume
species that are smaller and more vulnerable than
themselves hence the term predator. While larger
predators like white-faced heron or great egret are
content to stalk through the shallows spearing crabs
temporarily distracted by detritus, it takes the keen eye,
strong neck and demented beak action of a red capped
plover to hoover up the countless tiny innocuous
invertebrates and amphipods required to make up a
decent feed. And what does the very smallest estuarine
macro-invertebrate predator eat? Presumably, some
unsuspecting macro-herbivore that was simply going
about its business of sucking micro-algae off a grain of
sand. There are hundreds of micro plants and animals,
bacteria and viruses that live on individual sand grains
or inhabit the minute spaces between grains. Just
another habitat in the "dynamic " Barwon Estuary.

awake when I should be asleep. Or I was

warm when my body was ready for cold.
Any excuse other than an ageing
vestibular system sounded plausible to
me. Yet somehow, when she raised her
hand high and the subsequent silencing
of the bar settled - I suddenly wasnt dizzy
anymore. In fact, I felt like everyone else
in the lock-in. Very, very still.

Through the still and silent crowd, a

young lad stepped forward. Seemingly
buoyed by our acute attention, he walked
up to the centre of the stage. He stood
before us all as she handed him her
microphone, his back reflecting the
stillness of the band. Then, he raised his
hand to meet hers and in unison their
hands fell down together.
And then he started to sing his song.
So, she raised her hand and the bar was

suddenly silent.
I was inside an Irish pub. Partaking in my
first lock-in in 20 years. The last one
being the last time I was upside down on
the other side of the world. At least thats
what I blamed my vertigo on - that being
on the upside down part of the world.
Where its night when its our day. When
its summer when its our winter. Where
pubs close at 11:00 unless everyone is
having a really good time (and still buying
Guinness) - at which stage they will state:
Lock in.
The crowd listened in silence to his notes

of love and loss. Sung in a language that
seemed from so long ago. I understood
nothing of what he was singing, yet
everything of what he was feeling. After
he finished, he bowed to the silenced
crowd, the band kicked up again and the
lock-in festivity seemed to continue.
She held her hand above her head three
more times throughout the night. Each
time another fresh face was greeted to
the stage. Meaning three more songs for
those of us locked-in the bar in silence.
And for me, for the first time in this upside
down part of the world, I was solidly still.
Without any idea as to why.
Meaning youre stuck inside your upside

down world.
I blamed my vertigo on not only topsy
turvy antics. It was also because I was

When someone sings from their heart,
you listen.
Think recline twists, throat openers and
Kirtan.
The opposite of listening is waiting to
speak. So often, we might find ourselves
thinking that we are deeply attentive to
what another person is expressing.
Whereas really, we are just waiting for
them to finish whatever it is they are
saying so that we can layer our own
beliefs and opinions on whats been
spoken. Our body can even shape how
we think and how we receive information
from another. Meaning our long-held
assumptions about information can
make us miss opportunities to discover
new decisions and directions.
Making ourselves still and holding
ourselves in silence provides a solid
foundation from which we can actively
and attentively listen beyond the words
that are spoken. Allowing us to deepen
our connection with those that are around
us. And to strengthen our conviction of
who that is within us.
Last week on the other side of the world, I
stood still in a silent pub. I had a
Jamesons in one hand and a Guinness
in the other. And even though it was 2am
and I was standing upside down, nothing
spilled.
Because my heart was openly listening to
another.

Most of us are handed a toothbrush at a young age

and have to figure it out.
Here are some tips for optimal oral hygiene.
I recommend a soft toothbrush as plaque only has a
'double cream' consistency. Therefore, a soft
toothbrush can easily remove this. Using a soft
brush also allows you to get up to the gum margin
without causing gum tenderness. Using a hard
toothbrush or applying pressure onto the gums can
also lead to tooth wear. I see many patients with
wear and recession in the roots of their teeth from
brushing overly hard.

Electric toothbrushes are excellent for good

cleaning. You can get the same result with a manual
toothbrush if you are thorough with your cleaning
but an electric toothbrush does the work for you.
When choosing an electric brush, I would make sure
it has a timer included. If you brush too hard, then
find one that has a pressure sensor included.
Brushing technique- Firstly, tilt your brush at a 45degree angle and aim the bristles at the gum
margin.
Use small circulation motions to brush up and down
the tooth (let the brush do the work for you with an
electric brush). Do the outside surface of all your
teeth and then the inside surface of all your teeth.
Then move to the biting surfaces of your teeth, place
the bristles on top of the biting surfaces and brush
back and forth.
You should brush for a full 2 minutes. There are a lot
of free apps to time your brushing and some fun
ones for the kids to use as well.
Of course, cleaning between your teeth with floss or
interdental brushes is important too; I will cover this

to help each other in a time of need, and I
love nothing more than being able to help
a friend or neighbor. The irony is that we
love to give help but find it so hard to ask
for help ourselves, and therefore, hard to
find this connection between people who
want to help and those who need the help.

I would love to introduce our community to
a mobile phone App called 'Help Me Help
You.' This is a free App, which puts you in
touch with your network of friends and
family when you need help and also when
you can offer help.
'Help Me Help You' was the brainchild of
Melbourne mother Emma Race, the idea
of the App was inspired by a group of
friends rallying around a girlfriend who
was ill. It helped to coordinate the offers of
help for laundry, food, transport etc.
I grew up in a very connected farming
community and I wanted to nurture that for
my community and family. My research
brought me to this App, which was just
perfect for our busy lifestyles. Like

most families in Barwon Heads we live
away from family, there are moments
when I need someone to look after my
child so I can attend an appointment,
someone to feed my dog for the
weekend, or I am stuck in Geelong and
I know I can't get back for school pick
up. Who can I ask? What if they are
busy? With this App I can ask a group
of friends and the person who can help
will respond. This removes the
difficulty in asking and feeling like you
are pressuring individuals.
Once you have the App and ask family
and friends to also get the App, you can
create tasks and invite people to help
you with those tasks. It can be a one off
and a request can be sent to selected
friends and neighbour's - can
someone take care of Ben after school
until 4.30 Or it could be a community
task to be set, Jenny broke her leg,
lets help her out with a list of items like
dinners, a lift to work, babysitting
then each friend can check off the
items they can help with

The Barwon Heads planning boundaries
are now under review and the local
community needs to be actively engaged.
The moratorium on the current structure
plan has passed and the City of Greater
Geelong has started to review the
villages borders. I strongly encourage
the Barwon Heads community to be
aware of the upcoming consultation
process and get involved in the important
stakeholder forums to be announced in
August. There is significant interest from
developers looking to build around the
Barwon Heads area and obviously real
estate agents will show interest in the
potential subdivisions for new building
growth. Residents in the area have long
enjoyed controlled growth within the
current boundaries, which is unique to
Barwon Heads and provides the
ambience and liveability of a village not
spoilt by excessive expansion.
It is
important that, as major stakeholders,
residents also become involved in the
consultation process before planning
decisions are made that may change the
amenity of Barwon Heads forever.

When judges are asked to weigh and Screen

issues setting the interests of children against
their own desires or those of their families, to
apply their understanding of the law as set out in
The Children Act, society calls on them to work in
an extremely fraught area indeed.
And thats where we meet McEwans brilliant
High Court Judge, Fiona Maye. At first glance,
she is supremely well-qualified for the task,
possessed of extraordinary compassion, wisdom
and humanity, but we soon learn that like all of
us, perhaps, she too has blind spots and doubts
about her own judgement.
This short but wonderful read tells revealing
stories about people caught up in moral
quagmires against their will, people reluctantly
gripped between the proverbial rock and a hard
place. Some of the issues are medical, some
educational or familial, but each time, Maye has
to reach a final outcome, knowing full well

that some, perhaps many of the people
concerned will be outraged by whatever she
finally decides.
As she says,
The Family Division teemed with strange
differences, special pleading, intimate half
truths, exotic accusation.
We meet families with all kinds of religious
convictions strict Muslims; Orthodox Jews;
Jehovahs Witnesses; Catholics and we
watch on with mixed horror and admiration
as the Judge struggles to find the right path
in each case.
Ideas of morality, religion and duty are rarely
given much respect or consideration these
days, but this fine novel gives full weight to
them. Many of us will read it from a vaguely
uncomprehending atheist viewpoint, but I for
one was delighted that McEwan set me so
many intractable choices to weigh in the
balance myself as I read.
Its good for all of us to walk in anothers shoes, to

consider, from their viewpoint, the deeply felt
needs of others. Its great for us to to re-examine
our own values and give consideration to the
beliefs of people like those caught up in moral
dilemmas. The authors own gentle tolerance and
wisdom shines strongly through this book.

A Legend Retires
If you look up the word Legend in your Oxford Concise it may say
something like: a notable person whose deeds or exploits are
much talked about in their own time. If you happen to wander
down to the Tin Shed on any Thursday evening or Sunday afternoon
you will find many a person who will self-profess legendary status.
Look a little harder and you will see a living legend, Mr. Daniel T.
Murphy.
Danny or Murph, as he is better known, has been an active member of the Barwon
Grove Golf Club (AKA the Tin Shed) for over forty years. Back when he first joined
the club it was just an old Nissan hut stuck on the 54 acres, not the fantastic facility
it is today.
During his time Murph has served as club President and also been a long serving
general committee member and club office bearer. Whilst this work is important,
many members may say that it is Danny's work relating to the bar that has been of
greatest significance.
Over the past 4 decades he has acted as honorary barman, as well as making sure
the bar is well stocked and the beer lines are clean and flowing. He has trained and
mentored countless staff who have had the pleasure of pouring a beer or serving a
champagne down at the tin shed.
That would generally be enough for most people but Danny's efforts at the club
have certainly exceeded the contribution of most. Doing the weekly shopping,
turning a snag or two on the BBQ, keeping the place clean and tidy, keeping
member's kid's supplied with lemonade and icy poles, donning the Santa suit every December and wiggling his hips on the dance floor at club functions are just
some of the other items that appear on his resume.
In April this year Danny wrote to the committee of the club to inform them in his own words that after 40 plus years all good things must come to an end. Sadly
time has come for Danny to step back from all duties at the club and simply enjoy what being a member of the Tin Shed is all about. (Socialising & arguing with
Scallop, Jack Andrew and Mick Walter). His letter went on to say that he hoped he had made a small difference in making the club what it is today. I'd say that
without you Daniel T Murphy, the club would not be the special place it is and it wouldn't have achieved the status it enjoys within the Barwon Heads community.
You are a local legend Murph and we all look forward to enjoying a drink or two with you at the shed on Sunday, 7th of August from 2pm at our celebration

COMMUNITY ARTS GARDEN

In recent months there has been a
great deal of redevelopment
activity in the Garden, but not all
of it directly related to gardening.
The Committee has long held a desire to
relocate and enhance the children's play area.
With the generous help of funds from the former
Barwon Heads Kindergarten, this is now
happening.
A plan was developed by Garden members Deb

Reid and Carmel Smith, and its execution was
overseen principally by Deb. To shift the existing
large logs, we enlisted the generous help of
Tony Lawn and his bobcat. An old speedboat,
donated by members Cassy & Frank Twomey
has been filled with earth and will be used as a
planter for strawberries. There is now a smart
new sandpit, a figure-8 gravel track, and a
parking place for toy cars, topped off with several

large pieces of play equipment from the former
kinder. At the East end of the area, Russell
Hudson is creating a children's play kitchen.
Finally, we are looking at placing a suitable
overhead shade cloth. Already the area is
attracting enthusiastic customers! Thanks to all
involved for your generous help with this project.

nightwear commissioning handwoven pure
cotton fabrics in India and design a small
exclusive range of clothing.
Created for women like ourselves who want to
wear interesting clothes that are not faddy or
over-designed, mostly plain or shot colours,
often favouring black, grey, indigo with a hint
of the exotic in linings, or facings. Comfort is
paramount without sacrificing style, quality or fit.
Sized from small to plus sizes.
M O T I also curates a collection of Indian-made
homewares: bedcovers and quilts, including
cotton appliqu bedspreads and curtains,
delicately hand-stitched but machine washable;
extra-light soft cotton voile covers called dohars,
used in summer in India and perfect for hot
weather in any country.
Similarly, our nightwear is made from the finest
cotton voiles, hand block-printed in Jaipur, but
easy to throw in the wash. Perfect for all
seasons.
From different parts of India we also collect

beautiful scarves, shawls and jewellery as well
as garments such as printed cotton quilted
jackets plus fine linen and fine wool wraps.
Our preference is always to use natural fibres:
cotton, linen and silk. In addition, we like to
support traditional methods and village artisans.
Hence most of our fabrics are woven by hand,
including pure cotton from Mangalgiri, a town not
far from Hyderabad. We incorporate some
traditional Indian hand block printing and hand
embroidery while avoiding an 'ethnic' look. We
use block-printed soft cotton voiles as linings, or
a touch of hand embroidery in facings...
MOTI has always been interested in embroidery
known as kantha, found in Bengal, Bangladesh
and also Bihar (where it is referred to as 'sujani'
work). Kantha is based on simple running stitch
and was originally used to patch together old
saris to form quilts. Threads from the sari
borders were extracted for the embroidery
stitching. We commission kantha on beautifully
strumpet
exotic scarves, shawls and throws sourced from

a womens co-operative in Kolkata
A proportion of our profits is donated every year
to charities in India.
Moti was established 15 years ago by Val
Wilson and Sue McFall and has long been a
favourite brand of ours for stylish clothing.
Christine and Marilyn Shady took over the
running of MOTI on 1st July. Both are
passionate about India, Indian textiles and of
course Indian food! Christine is a former IT
professional and Marilyn teaches in the field of
gastronomy and food studies. Both live in

a sprinkle of parmesan & a layer of spinach leaves,

pasta sheets, blobs of ricotta, remainder of
passata, a sprinkle of permesan, pasta sheets,
leek mix then cover with cheese sauce...sprinkle
remainder of parmesan over and a grate of nutmeg
then bake until golden brown.
You can do these layers however you like and a
layer of roasted broccoli and/or roasted fennel can
be added...and I served it with
Braised peas, lettuce, sprouts &

pesto
2 cups defrosted frozen peas
1 baby cos lettuce sliced into 8 lengthways
200gm brussels sprouts trimmed of out leaves,
take off hard base then halve
white part of leek- shredded
1 clove minced garlic
half a thinly sliced red chilli
2 tsp basil pesto & some bacon bits
1 tbs olive oil
Heat oil & add brussels sprouts (cut side down)
cook until brown then stir in remainder of
ingredients and cook for a few minutes until
tender...stir through pesto, top with bacon and
serve with lasagne.

This is heavenly for those of us who

love cauliflower cheese and who
also love lasagne...together they
gently sing comfort food.
Sing along while making this delightful recipe then
snuggle up and get cosy. Must be eaten on the
couch in front of a fire...
Youll need 12 sheets lasagne; 1 cauliflower; 1
leeks (white part); 1 tsp ground fennel; 1 bottle
passata; a good handful of spinach leaves; 3
cloves garlic; 500gm fresh ricotta; 2 egg yolks;
1 litre milk; 75gm butter; fresh nutmeg; 1/3 cup
plain flour & 250gms grated mozarella or tasty
cheese and cup parmesan cheese plus 3 tbs
extra.
Slice cauliflower into pieces and place on

baking sheet lined with baking paper (including
loose pieces cut into small pieces)...sprinkle
fennel over and bake at 160c until lightly brown on
both sides, turn oven up to 175c...
meanwhile...shred leeks, mince 2 cloves garlic
and starting with a cold pan, heat 2 tbs olive oil, to
medium low then cook slowly until leeks are soft
then season lightly...to make the cheese sauce
melt 75gm butter then stir in flour and cook on low
heat until combined, add milk and stir until sauce
thickens...remove from heat and stir in cheeses
and egg yolks... grate a little nutmeg over then
assemble lasagne in a buttered dish in this (or a
similar order)...1 cup passata over base, dot with
blobs of ricotta and a drizzle of cheese sauce,
pasta sheets, roasted cauliflower, half of leek mix,

Our annual arthouse film festival...on a cold & wet weekend, we were snuggled
up with hot cups of tea at our community hall where we enjoyed some tasty little short foodie
films preceding 4 excellent films starting on Friday with Babettes Feast; continuing
Saturday morning with Jiro Dreams of Sushi; and then the afternoon session was Noma:
My Perfect Storm where chef Rene Redzepi spoke about his passion for locally sourced
nordic food and his journey, from being teased by racists when he & his family arrived as
immigrants from Macedonia to Denmark, to then being feted by the fooderati when his
restaurant Noma won best restaurant in the world in 2010, 2011, 2012 & 2014. We were

THE LOBSTER POT?
A Winter's Tale
Now that our short & sharp winter has eased
it's icy grip & I have returned from my sunny
holiday interlude, let's swap stories.
There is a lot to learn.
With the year now more than half over, it is
comforting to know that the approaching
summer is closer than the last one. This
thought is front & centre in the minds of the
Friends of the Lobster Pot. A program of
improvements has been put together in
preparation for the summer opening season.
For my part I'm proud to tell you about my
much-anticipated swim in the iconic waters of
the Mediterranean Sea.
After carefully making my painful way across
the stony shoreline I nervously picked my way
into the rocky shallows.
There I was met by drifts of paper & plastic
floating in the water.
My instinct was to flee.
That was the end of the swim. I was told later
that this was unusual & that strong winds
during the previous week had driven this
debris to shore. Tis made me realise that
everyone's expectation of a beach visit
usually includes clean, sandy shorelines &
clean water.
On my return I was grateful this continues to be
so. With the approaching summer only 200
sleeps away I would like to suggest that you
plan your visit soon. The short, sharp opening
season from Boxing Day to Australia Day is at
a hectic time.
Regular readers of this column will know I'm
talking about the Barwon Estuary Heritage
Centre.
It's the green building on the riverfront near 'At
the Heads restaurant. If you are interested in
the natural & cultural heritage of our river
estuary & happy to share your knowledge,

Mid Winter Count Bellarine/Breamlea:

During the Winter, BirdLife Australia
coordinates a count of some of the key
flocking areas for the hoodies. July 13th
was the chosen day for this year's count.
Weather is not always on our side when monitoring
hoodies. Especially during the Winter Count!
The weather during the week of the count was simply
diabolical, with wild winds and big tides & storm
surges. However, we were all determined to do the
job.
Needing to postpone the original date due to gale
force and damaging wind warnings, we were able to
undertake the survey on the 14th of July.
Bellarine Coordinator, Andrea Dennett, Brett Diehm
from Barwon Coast and volunteer, John Murray had
success counting Hoodies along the Bellarine. Julie
Riley and Jennie Turner from Breamlea also
accompanied Andrea to Lake Murtnaghurt behind
13th Beach but the Hoodies previously sighted there
had moved on, most likely due to the water levels in
the lagoon being too high for the short legs of the
hoodies! On the 14th July, Andrea counted a total of 13
Hoodies at 13th Beach (29W and 42W) but due to poor
weather had to postpone the remaining beaches until
the following day.
Fortunately, Brett came to the rescue and on the 15th
July, very obligingly checked the whole stretch and
counted a total of 18 (8 x banded, 2 x unbanded and 8
x juveniles)!
The local pairs were all observed: CR and SN from
29W, XU and NK from 40W and Brett also sighted PC
and EH from 42W, still in the company of their now
eight month old offspring. Still hanging around our
side of the bay were the two Phillip Island adults,
YLF15 and YLF21. Of the 8 juveniles along this
stretch, one included a sub-adult with its 'salt and
pepper' head. Andrea would like to think that the two
juveniles in the photo provided are the local 'twins' of
AD and unbanded from 6W Ocean Grove/Collendina.
John Murray did the stretch from Point Lonsdale to
Ocean Grove: and observed 10 Hoodies at 'Turtle
Rock': (Point Lonsdale) - 8 adults and 2 juveniles -but
due to the flightiness of the flock, no flags were able to
be read. At Ocean Grove, NZ and unbanded partner
were observed on territory. This brought the total birds
sighted to 12 Hoodies (10 x adults, 2 x juveniles). Julie
Riley and Jennie Turner saw all the usual suspects on
territory at Bancoora/Breamlea Beaches - a total of 7
adults (3 x banded; 4 x unbanded). Overall, the
combined total of the Bellarine/Breamlea Mid-Winter
Count was 37 Hoodies.

WEED REDUCTION:
Over the last few weeks and for the coming month or
two, Barwon Coast has and will be undertaking
extensive woody weed removal along the Ocean Grove
Collendina foreshore adjacent Ocean Throughway.
Barwon Coast Staff, Conservation Australia Volunteers
and our Green Army Team have been involved in this
significant work to maintain and improve the indigenous
plant species biodiversity. The primary woody weed
removed has been Polygala a South African species
that is particularly invasive in coastal areas. It is a woody
shrub up to 2m height and

redevelopment of the caravan
park office to be completed over
2 years. The first stage was
completed in late 2015 and saw the provision of a
dedicated laundry to service the accommodation portion
of the business; a staff lunch room and outdoor staff
courtyard; and relocation of existing kiosk to the southern
end of the park. It also involved improvements to parking
for caravans checking into the park and increased single
vehicle parking at the front of the building. The second
stage will see the redevelopment of the front office and
the building entrance to provide greater internal usable
space for both staff and visitors. Included is improved
and safer pedestrian access to the office from both car
parks.
Trak Constructions successfully tendered for the work
and expect to complete the final stage before December
this year.
OUR ENVIRONMENT:
July is the commencement of the Echidna breeding
season which will continue until September. It is when
the female develops a pouch to nurse her puggle.
Lovelorn male echidnas often queue up behind a female,
nose to tail, forming long trains, up to ten echidnas long.
These trains are the first part of the strange echidna
courtship and mark the beginning of the breeding
season. Due to their slow gait, they are susceptible to
vehicle strikes and dog attacks. Help us protect our
unique wildlife that live in our coastal dunes by driving
slowly, keep pets under control and leave gaps under
fences so the animals can roam freely.
CYLINDERS BEACH ACCESS 31W BARWON

HEADS:
Barwon Coast is continuing to work on options for access
from the 'Cylinders' car park down to 13th Beach. Costing
and design work is progressing and a funding application
to the State governments Coastal Environments
Program (CEP) Public Access and Risk is currently
underway. The last round of the CEP program provided
the funding for the removal of the old access and for the
planning of the replacement facility.
The site of the old staircase, lost late last year, is still
active and presents almost insurmountable problems for
re-building on the same site. All other options are being
investigated including funding possibilities for those
options. Barwon Coast knows it is a popular site and
have received input from stakeholder groups supporting
a replacement access in some form.
We will continue to work toward the best outcome
possible and to also keep the community updated as
planning progresses.

Keep your house safe this winter
Reflecting back on the past 80 years we can see that while many things have changed the way we're alerted to
incidents, the training we undergo and the equipment we use the types of incidents we respond to are invariably the
same.
The first reported fire call for the Brigade was on Thursday I5 July 1937 at 3.05am. The fire was in a weatherboard
house which began in a bedroom. The fire was fought by a hose reel, hydrant and a 200 foot hose. It was attended for
55 minutes by four officers and six firemen. One of whom received badly lacerated fingers from broken glass.
On the evening that Ted Winter became Captain in 1955, the Brigade was called to a house fire at Ocean Grove. On
arrival, Captain Ted Winter checked the house for people inside and found two teenage girls asleep in a bedroom who
were rescued without much trouble.
The Brigade was called to Punt Road at 8.45pm on 12 January 2011. The rear of the house was on fire and was
quickly contained by members in breathing apparatus (BA). The fire had started from an air conditioner on the roof.
And in December 2014 the Brigade was called to a fire in Culdee Court which began in the garage but quickly spread
to the main house. Members fought the fire in BA and set up hoses to protect the houses on either side of the property.
While the garage was badly damaged, the house was saved.
We've trained on a house 'hot prop' to gain experience in targeting the primary source of a fire in a situation such as
those described above.
The CFA website has many great tips for keeping houses fire safe in winter, including remembering to regularly clear
the lint from the dryer, ensuring there is a screen in front of open fire places and that families know their fire escape plan. Visit www.cfa.vic.gov.au

Winter Riding Part Two
The best thing about cycling in winter is not cycling in
winter. This is the season when you catch up on sleep
and shun those early mornings for an extra few zzz's.
Like the other day when I was working from home on the
Friday and thought Here I go, I can get up and ride with
the team and then have a coffee. But for some reason
the alarm went off, I pushed the snooze button and then I
was back in Sturky's front yard again. Damn that Acey
Duecey, I said to myself as I untangled myself from
those bloody ship ropes, when out of the corner of my
eye I noticed a piece of furniture that Jules would kill for.
I brushed past the various coloured buoys that were
lying around, jumped over the bloody huge anchor that
was lying on a precarious angle, and just as I was about
to fix my gaze on that piece of Dutch furniture, I fell over
a statue of a surfer that was lying down in the bamboo.
Down I went like a bag of cockles and ended upside
down in a pile of wetsuits that looked vaguely like the
ones I sold at a garage sale recently. I tried to get up and
realised that my foot was caught in something, then
further realised that my foot was stuck in the mouth of a
shark. Yes that bloody shark that everyone walks by fifty
times a day. Well guess what people, he's got a brother
and it's in Sturky's front yard. Trying to untangle my foot
from the fibreglass great white, I put my hand on what I
thought was another buoy, but was actually the breast of
a mermaid! Yes, a mermaid. Just like the one that
people stop and look at eighty times a day. Obviously a
sister, most likely a twin, as mermaids generally come in
twins. Anyway, that's when the alarm went off again and
it was all a dream. So I ask you, would you rather get up
and ride on a cold morning or catch up on a few zzz's
with some of Sturky's favourite showpieces?
I know my answer.
The Munda Biddi Trail by Mark Bent

The Munda Biddi Trail is a nature based, 1000km+
track, running from Mundaring (Perth), in the north, to

Albany, down south. We chose to ride north from Albany.
Theoretically, being winter the weather would improve as
we rode.it worked!
We tackled it with 14 days of riding.

Why? My best mate Mitts moved to WA nearly 20 years
ago, for the last 3 or 4 years he's been asking me to join
him on the Munda Biddi Trail, end to end. "One day for
sure" has been my answer.
Early this year I was excited to see you and the Bridge to
Bridge boys preparing for such a great challenge, so
rather than letting
FOMO set in, I
contacted Mitts and
said "I'll do it!"
without really
realising what "it"
was!
There were lots of
mechanical hurdles
a l o n g t h e w a y,
broken chains,
broken spokes, flat
tyres and worst of all
a broken frame for
Mitts! Lots of mental
challenges to
overcome too! Trees and branches all over the track from
recent storms and a lot more hills than I'd expected in WA.
Loooong days in the saddle to reach our destination each
day left us wishing we'd set ourselves a few more days to
enjoy the scenery along the way. Turns out the Munda
Biddi website advises 28 days to rideBah, who's got 28
days?!
The Good..
It was an awesome adventure. The landscape scenery,
from tall forests to ancient looking open plains amazed. I
loved the new and unfamiliar riding challenges, like pea

gravel, and lots of it! Mostly it was just a great chance to
cycle day after day with little other concerns than the
destination. Carrying all our gear and sleeping in the
huts was uncomfortable, but something about being in
the middle of nowhere made this a positive.

Trailer Storage Wanted

The BHCC are still looking for a place to store our
cycling trailer that is undercover. It is 5.4 metres long
and only about a metre high. We would love
somewhere local where we can access it easily. If you
have any thoughts or ideas, please contact someone
from the club.
That's all our cycling news for this month. It's finally
starting to warm up just a little and the mornings are not
so dark while sipping our lattes after the ride.
Thanks to everyone in town who chooses to ride down
the street instead of getting in the car. It has been great
to see so many children riding their bikes to school over
the winter keep it up kids.
And thanks Matt Dunell from the other BHCC for your
kind words almost brought a tear to my eye!

SEAGULLS BASKETBALL CLUB
Hi Seagulls Basketballers,
We have some upcoming important dates for your diary:
Summer season team registration: (playing term 4 2016 and term 1 2017) - in
person Friday 26th August 2.30-4pm at the BHPS gym or online by midnight on
the 26th (please go to our Facebook page Barwon Heads Seagulls Basketball
Club for link),
Junior Presentation Day: Saturday 27th August 2-4pm at the BHPS gym for all
junior winter team members. There will be medals, trophies, team photos and lolly
bags so not to be missed.
AGM: Tuesday 30th August 7pm at the BHPS gym (all welcome) followed by
summer team selection meeting (coaches and committee only).
With the AGM approaching we need to elect a new committee. Most of our
current committee are stepping down (after 2 or more years in their positions) so
we have all major spots up for grabs (President, Vice President, Secretary and
Treasurer) and the club will not be able to continue unless we fill these roles.
Here is a brief history of the club and I hope this may inspire you to come along
and help out.
The club was started as one boys team in 2005 with a girls team to quickly follow.
By 2013 there were 16 teams and now in Winter 2016 we have 26 teams! In 2008
the committee was made up of the following names: Tracey Sell, De McKinnon,
Kim Kosta, Kylie Rawson, Rhyll Montgomery, Kerry Cosgrove, Belinda Cox and
Paul Fowler. 2009 saw the first family fun day at Ocean Grove where parents
played against the kids. This has now been replaced by our annual presentation
day in the new BHPS gym - a local facility we are very fortunate to have.
If it wasnt for the dedication of past and present committee members we wouldnt
have such a vibrant and strong basketball presence in Barwon Heads. I have
included a couple of older photos so you can have some fun seeing if you
recognise any faces.
In this particular issue I would like to take the opportunity to thank our leaving
president Modesty Kneebone who has really helped move the club along with
great passion and commitment. So come along to the AGM or if you cant make it
just let Mod know you would like to help out or send an email to
seagullsbasketballclub@gmail.com. The more the merrier. If the main positions
are filled there are lots of other fun jobs you can help out with too such as the
Talking Heads articles :)

2016 Bridge rights have gone to Barwon Heads with creditable wins in Seniors,
Reserves and Colts in our first game at their new venue.
Our Senior boys season come down to this; we must win every game and
hope that Torquay drop one along the way to play finals this year. We tackle
Newcomb this week, being our last home game for the season.
Past players are expected to gather in numbers and our much appreciated
sponsors are heading up to enjoy the days festivities.
In the next two weeks that follow will be the crunch games, away to
Modewarre and Anglesea in the last home and away game, history tells us
both clubs can be a hand full on their home grounds.
The possibilities for finals are still within our grasps, with traditional power
house club, Torquay proving not as strong this season as seasons before.

Just like that the end of the season is

upon us.
Soon there will be no whistles and cheers echoing from the Barwon Heads courts.
As spring approaches, so do finals. And the Seagulls have plenty of teams in contention for premierships.
In seniors, A and B grades will be hoping for a string of strong wins and for other results to fall their way to play beyond the home and away fixture.
C and D grades have been hovering in the top four but will also need to be at their best to
contend for the top prize.
The ever-improving 19 and unders are certain to feature in finals, which is credit to teamwork
and the leadership of coaches Kate and Darcy.
Our junior sides are thriving.
The 17 and unders are likely safe in the four, while the 17 and under Section 2 powerhouse
remained uneaten after 14 games.
Both 15 and under teams are in the mix but require solid consecutive victories to secure a spot.
Similarly, both 13 and under outfits are cruising along and should notch up further triumphs
heading into finals.
Our youngest brigade of three 11 and under sides continue to represent the club in Ocean
Grove and Geelong beautifully. The future is looking bright if these budding talents are any
indication.
A huge congratulations to Cath Latimer for organising a wonderfully successful Ladies Day
event last month. Thanks to those who helped set up, especially the 17 and under girls, as well
as those who donated items for auction - and of course those who supported the cause.

Other invitations are smack bang

right in your face. Health issues that
invite a lifestyle change,
relationship breakdowns that invite
a new outlook or accidents that
require us to seek the help of others
we might not ordinarily ask.
And then there are the opportunities to make a choice.
We see something and we have the choice to act or to
walk on. An invitation to put our energies into something
that's going to fail without us. A chance to play a part in
changing the course of something we care about at a
time when that course needs correcting.
In the late 1990s the cricket club in Barwon Heads was in
a delicate state. Leadership standards were low,
governance was lacking and some of the personalities in
the place had lost focus on the welfare of the club, its
standing and reputation and what they could offer the
club and had become more interested in what benefits
the club might offer them. There was an immediate need
for action, a need for someone to stand up and say,
Enough! and lead the club into a new era.
Enter Phil Stephenson.
Phil was already a life member, having served in various
guises as junior premiership player, A grade
premiership player,
premiership captain,
committeeman and secretary. He'd well and truly done
his part through a long period to make the club strong
and it would be fair to say that had he decided that his
energies for the club had been exhausted and made the
choice to walk on, nobody would even have thought
twice about him having a role in saving the place.
But he didn't. Phil saw there was a problem and chose to
step forward. He made himself aware of the troubles
facing the club and gathered a group of people around
him who could be trusted to do the things needed to
change the course of the club. There were financial and
cultural issues that needed addressing and he made
sure that he gathered the people that could, and would,
focus their energy on changing the way things got done
and move the culture of the club to a place where
members had the welfare of the club as their first priority.
In particular he made sure that the interest of juniors was
a priority and that the Barwon Heads Cricket Club
became a part of the weekly ritual for families.
He especially wanted the club to be welcoming and
comfortable for women. The idea of the blokie, boozie
barn was assigned its place in history and a new way of
thinking was encouraged. Milo cricket, the fore runner of
community cricket, was introduced and a greater
emphasis on the enjoyment of junior players and their
success was encouraged.
The winning of senior games and senior premierships
became a non-priority while the club focused on
becoming a place where families would feel welcome,
safe and valued.

Hours were dedicated to selling raffle tickets in the

camping ground and the bar of the hotel over the summer
to turn the flagging finances of the club around and clear
mounting debt and the idea of inclusiveness of everyone
with a passion or interest in cricket having a place - in our
club was born.
Phil saw the invitation and accepted with gusto.
These measures and the disciplined adherence to them
paid dividends, and the club was able to turn itself around
and become the envy of many in the district. Had Phil not
seen this invitation, or decided that he didn't have a place
in taking action then there's a good chance that we
wouldn't be where we are now.
I've been lucky to meet a lot of very fine people in Barwon
Heads over the years. Great role models who have
shown examples of how a good citizen should conduct
themselves. None of them probably set out to do so in any
particular way, but many of them have shaped the
thinking of a lot of people of my generation. All good
communities have these people and Barwon Heads has
been no exception over a very long time.
For me Phil stands side by side with any of these people.
From his involvement in the cricket club, to the footy field,
the running track or just his healthy attitude to having a
beer and a laugh (or even a cry) with his mates, he's
shown an example that many admire.
In later years Phil became the quintessential Aussie
expat, living in Singapore and Cambodia, but he was
never far from the BHCC. He was a regular at reunions
and get-togethers and would appear in the rooms at
afternoon tea without particular notice for a beer and
through the marvels of social media was always informed
of the club's fortunes. Though thousands of miles away,
he was more in tune with many of the issues of the club
than many members who live in the town and he had
ideas and advice worth listening to and noting when
asked.
He was always willing to listen to an idea and always
asked for more information on how the club was going
when he was in town.
It was always easy to tell if he liked an idea too. Having
heard the idea, if he was a fan he would ask, Now, how
do we make that happen? but if he wasn't a fan he'd
simply say, Well good luck with that.
I imagine that when Phil was on his way home from the
club he sometime might look back at the lights and listen
to the fading banter from the rooms in the distance and
feel very proud of the legacy he left there.
From a personal point of view he was always a source of
great encouragement to me, tempered with a wonderful
sense of pointing out reality.
I remember my first senior game of footy for Barwon
Heads.
I was 17 and we were playing down at Winchelsea.
In those days there was interchange, but the idea of
rotations was years away. Getting taken to the bench was
seen as a punishment by both players and coaches and it
was the place where battlers and first gamers started the
game. It wasn't unusual for a bloke to sit there for the
entire match and not get a run.
As it turned out in this game Barwon Heads had the upper
hand for most of the day with a rampaging P. Stephenson
providing the focal point at full forward. He'd kicked 6 or 7
goals in the first half and a couple more in the third quarter
when the coach sent the first gamer onto the field to play
along -side of him in a forward pocket. I had strict
instructions to follow him about and get any crumbs, but
even more strict instructions to, Stay out of his bloody
way!
I jogged down to the forward line and took my place a

safe distance from Phil, but he immediately noticed me
and came over to shake my hand.
Is this the first time you've been out here today? I
haven't paid much attention to whether you had a run
down back.
No, this is my first time out here. I squeeked.
Great! Well done mate. Welcome aboard. Now stay out
of my bloody way. I've got 8 and I want 10 or more.
Encouragement and reality all together.
Less encouraging five minutes later when I wandered
into the eye of a wing man streaming down the field with
the ball. This chap also wanted to do the right thing and
feed one to the first gamer and maybe get him a goal,
and he passed it to me when Phil was undoubtedly in a
better position. I wasn't up to the challenge and missed
an easy mark and the ball was whisked away by the
defense. Stevo very politely reminded me of the earlier
instruction about not getting in the way and then less
politely reminded the wing man of who'd kicked 8 goals
and was running hot. It's fair to say I wasn't gifted any
more perfect passes and the coach thought he'd try me
in the back half for the last quarter. I got a couple of kicks
and held my own and a reputation as a possible
defender was spawned.
Oh what might have been.
Phil went on to bag 11 goals that day in a best on field
performance. One of many days when his, less than
classical, kicking boot and vicelike hands saw him treat
the crowd to some delights.
As an athlete Phil was a marvel. How anyone who ran
with that particular gait could convey themselves from
point A to point B in any reasonable time without causing
themselves a major injury has defied physics and
biochemistry for decades. Wayne Cornes described
Phil's running style as, Like a ruptured camel with gogo
gadget arms.
His left heel struck the earth with his toe at a 45 degree
angle splayed outward, while his right toe was the first
part of the opposite appendage to meet terra firma, with
the heel of that foot never actually meeting the road.
Yet run he could.
From a fellow who could barely be forced by a footy
fitness coach to warm up with a couple of laps, Phil went
on the complete ten consecutive Melbourne Marathons
in time well faster than three hours. When the running
bug bit him, it bit hard and deep.
Again on a personal note, when I later took up distance
running he showed great interest and would always ask
how my training was going and offer advice on making it
more effective or easier.
He also did advise me of the one kilometer to one beer
rule of recovery, but I never took it up as seriously as him.
I never got bitten by the bug a seriously as Phil either, but
I don't think I've ever been on a long training run or in a
long race where thoughts of a ruptured camel plodding
the pavement didn't inspire me to keep going just that
little bit further or harder.
At cricket, he was a very accomplished upper order
batter who made runs in all stages of games. He was
able to score quickly when the foot needed to go down or
to stick around and grind out an innings when the chips
were down.
I remember in a B Grade game at Ocean Grove when we
were 8-70 odd and I came in to bat with him. We only had
a 12 year old in his first game to come and Phil was
concerned for only two things. We had to protect the boy
from having to face this bowling and we had to produce
enough runs for the boy to be able to get a bowl in his first
game.
Phil set about batting in what is fairly described as an
unconventional manner and making a wonderful 60 or
so and we put on another 70 to get the score to where the
opposition had to make a bit of an effort to chase it down.
His batting style, like his kicking in footy and his running,
was less than classical, but it has to be said, equally
effective.

The following week the 12 year old did get a bowl, took 3
or 4 wickets and, though we lost the game, Stevo was
very proud of the effort we'd made and particularly
pleased that the young fellow had success.

When news of Phil's sad and sudden death reached me

in mid-July I could think of no other manner in which to
pay him my own little tribute than by going for a run and
thinking of all the times when, without even realizing he
was doing it, he was with me on a tough stretch of road or
beach.
It is pretty difficult to predict the manner in which Phil's
loss will impact the futures of those he's left behind.
I'm sure that it will be very difficult for those closest to him
for a long time, but who can say exactly how or for how
long. It's much easier to reflect on the positive impacts,
the inspiration and the guidance he has given to those of
us lucky enough to have had our lives touched by him.
It's reasonable to suggest that he's made a great
contribution to those people.
To his family, his friends, his students, his team mates,
his club and his community, he's been a giant.
It's impossible to feel gratitude for the passing of such a
wonderful bloke, but we should all have great gratitude
for the time we had to spend with him and the part of his
life he shared with us all.

The Barwon Heads Women's Soccer

Team, the Hammerheads have set a club
history record, being undefeated with only 5
matches to go.
The team has had the best season yet, sitting a very close second on the ladder to Surfcoast. They have been very
consistent this year and have fought hard to maintain their place and continue to put points on the board. The
Women's team has a strong set of players across the field from the goal keeper and backline to mid field and striker
positions.
Many of the players have scored goals and have not let the pressure get to them. Their strength is speed and ball
movement says Coach Ben Kelly. The girls have gone from strength to strength and are becoming more
consistent each week.
Interestingly the team have 5 sisters who play in the team this means that family holidays are not favoured in the
season!
On home match days you will find team in the Clubrooms listening to music and having their hair braided to pump up
the girl's pre match. There is such a great vibe in the team, the girls really respect each other and we have SO MUCH
fun says sweeper Stacie Donovan.

The Barwon Heads Soccer Club continues to encourage more and more Women (of any age) to come and join for
preseason. We welcome players of all skill and ability says Ben Kelly.
The club are hoping to increase player numbers for 2017 for both the men's and women's sides.
