Comments: The purpose of the essay is to review each source. You do a good job in this when you explain the thesis, method,
and result of each source
Thesis
(Controlling Idea)

The review is held together by a controlling idea (it may be implied) that clearly
summarizes the scholarly discussion on this topic. The controlling idea is narrowed
enough that the review can offer a comprehensive picture of the history of this
scientific conversation. The topic is not advocating or taking a stand on an issue, but
is rather setting up a scientific foundation for advocacy. The controlling idea is the
main idea that comes across as a result of the studies that are reviewed.

Comments: In the beginning, I was a bit confused on whether this was about the transformation from wolves to dogs or the
similarities of wolves and humans. However, after I read some more, I understand that it was the latter.
Historical
Dimensions

The essay provides details about the history of the research on the topic being
reviewedafter reading, you know when this topic was first researched (and by
whom) and a little about the history of this type of research since then.

Comments: You introduced how wolves were treated in history, but I feel like you could emphasize and provide more evidence
for their history.
Development

The review of the literature (body paragraphs) summarizes scientific research on the
topic. The studies reviewed are related. The author makes connections between the
studies to show the aspects of this conversation

Comments: You do a good job in developing each source and building up to how it relates to your thesis
Multimodal
Element(s)

The essay includes at least one multi-modal element (image or video) that
strengthens and/or deepens the idea being discussed in that section. The element is
added into the essay using MLA format with an appropriate caption.

Comments: Maybe it was because the elements did not get copied through, but I did not see any multimodal elements used in
this essay
Arrangement,
Organization

The essay is organized in a logical way that contributes to the readers understanding
of the scientific literature on this topic. The author uses topic sentences, transitions
and sign post words throughout the essay to guide the reader.

Comments: Great job in organizing each source and connecting the paragraphs together.
Research

The sources that make up the review are scientific studies/articles about the topic.
Other sources are used to help develop the background and context for the review.
All sources, even those that are not scientific studies, are credible for a scholarly
audience.

Comments: All the research youve done were scholarly and provided good amounts of information that helped me better
understand your thesis
Scholarly
Ethos

The author uses word choice and tone that makes the essay appropriate for a
scholarly audience. After reading the essay, you are sure that the author did adequate
research to write in a knowledgeable way.

Comments: I could definitely tell that this essay was written by a good writer, but I feel like it could maybe improve on the
aspects of ethos to make it sound more scholarly.
Source
Integration &

The author introduces the scholarly authors of the sources and integrates the
excerpts into his/her own writing in grammatically correct sentences. Correct MLA in-

Citation

text citation is used.

Comments: You do a good job in integrated each source and their authors, but I feel like you could improve upon providing
more credentials on the authors
Works Cited

The essay includes a Works Cited of all sources used that is formatted in MLA style.

Comments: The writer does not have a Works Cited page

Language and
Grammar

The essay is not riddled with grammatical or language errors; it is easy to read and
understand without having to decode because of error.

Comments: There were some small grammatical errors when introducing the authors of each source, but overall it met the
minimum requirements to be understood
Draft Length &
Source
Requirements

The essay is a minimum of 5 pages long (word count approximately 1250-1300

words) and uses a minimum of 5 sources.

Comments: The writer goes above the minimum requirements of draft length and source requirements.

1. You definitely need to include a works cited page as that is one of the most important
parts of the essay.
2. Look up the author of each source and try to provide more credentials for each person.
3. Try to improve on your scholarly ethos and use that as a way to better introduce your
main thesis.
