Introduction to DPX

Introduction to DPX
Catalogic DPX delivers unprecedented speed and savings with a single unified data protection solution making backup
and disaster recovery smarter, faster, and more efficient. It is uniquely designed to handle the most common data
protection use cases that are challenging IT departments.
DPX deploys quickly and scales easily to match the needs of rapidly growing cloud infrastructures. Additionally, the
software exploits modern server virtualization and is optimized for backup and recovery of virtual systems.
DPX Block Data Protection provides rapid and efficient backup, restore, bare metal recovery, application protection, and
tape archiving. A complex backup environment can have multiple backup Enterprises each with more than one
secondary system including NetApp storage and DPX open storage.
There is one master server per data protection Enterprise. The master server is a DPX node that contains DPX software,
including the Catalog and modules that control scheduling, media management, and distributed processing. Any other
node in an Enterprise from which you may want to back up data is called a client. The master server may also be a client
node.
Note: For the latest system requirements and compatibility details regarding supported hardware, file systems,
applications, operating systems, and service packs, go to System Requirements and Compatibility.

Process Overview
This guide requires that your implementer has already performed all of the basic one-time procedures for deploying your
DPXEnterprise.
In this guide, the following steps are described:
1. Create a Storage Volume on a NetApp Storage System on page 6 . This step is only for NetApp storage users.
2. Launch DPX on page 9
3. Run a Backup on page 10
4. Run a Restore on page 11
Specifically, you will set up a storage volume if using NetApp storage, perform a backup of a single client node, then
restore from that backup.
Note: For open storage users, storage must be made available to the DPX open storage server as physical or logical
volumes. A typical setup provisions one or more Windows drive letters such as D: and E:.

Required Components
All the nodes and resources defined to the master server comprise your Enterprise. The secondary storage system is
configured as a backup destination to the master server.
The components of this sample implementation include:

This is the node to protect. For this sample implementation, it is a non-cluster node.

Destination storage system,


Can be either a NetApp storage system or a DPX open storage server.

Before continuing, ensure that these components are connected to the network and turned on.

Create a Storage Volume on a NetApp Storage System


Note: If you are using NetApp storage, create and configure a storage volume as described in this topic. If you are using
DPX open storage, skip to Launch DPX on page 9.
Before running a backup using a NetApp storage system, a storage volume must be created on the storage system
backup destination node. Storage volumes are used to store backups. As a general rule, create a storage volume when a
backup job is defined.
Creating a storage volume involves the following main steps:
1. Determine storage volume size.
2. Launch OnCommand System Manager.
3. Use OnCommand System Manager to create a storage volume.
4. Configure the storage volume.

Determine Storage Volume Size


When you create a storage volume, you are required to enter a volume size. Note the following guidelines for determining
storage volume size:

The sizing of storage volumes on the NetApp storage system varies based on recovery objectives, data retention
needs, required granularity, and the rate of change for the source volumes.

Plan to have a dedicated storage volume for each backup job.

The volumes are spread across all aggregates.

Use FlexVol volumes for DPX deployment. The ability to manipulate the size of a FlexVol volume makes it an ideal
volume type for the backup destination because you do not know in advance how much disk space the backup of any
given client ultimately require. If the rate of change, retention requirements, or size of the backup job changes, you
can adjust the size of the FlexVol volume.
Warning: With FlexVol volumes, where space reservation is set to None, disk space is not allocated to the volume
at the time of creation, therefore, you can create a volume to be larger than the amount of data it houses.
Consequently, the storage system permits you to over commit the volume sizes such that the total of all volume
sizes on any given aggregate exceeds the aggregate size. However, if at any time you actually run out of space on
the aggregate, the consequences could be severe, possibly inhibiting restores and requiring a time-consuming rebuild
of the aggregate.

It is recommended that at least 10% of each aggregate be reserved for administrative overhead, and NetApp
recommends that 2% of each volume and 4% of each aggregate be reserved for A-SIS deduplication. Note that these
recommendations are not enforced by the NetApp wizard or by DPX software. It is up to the customer to monitor this
on a regular basis.

Launch OnCommand System Manager


To launch OnCommand System Manager:
1. If it is not already installed on your local machine, download OnCommand System Manager from the NetApp website
and run the install executable.
A NetApp NOW user name and password may be required for downloading.
2. Click Start, click All Programs, then select the NetApp folder, then select OnCommand System Manager.
3. Select the name of the NetApp storage system from the navigation pane of the OnCommand System Manager
console. Property information about the NetApp storage system appears.

Use OnCommand System Manager to Create a Storage Volume


For this simple test, create one storage volume dedicated to the client node to back up.
Tip: To save time for this test, select a client node with very little data on it.
To create a volume on the NetApp storage system:
1. From the Home tab on OnCommand System Manager, double-click the appropriate storage system.
2. In the navigation pane, click Storage.
3. Click Create Volume. The General tab of the Create Volume dialog displays.
Note: The root volume, vol0, is already created. Do not change it.
4. On the General tab:
a. Provide a unique but meaningful name for the first volume; for example sv_vol1.
b. Select the aggregate where you want the new volume created. Do not select aggr0, which is reserved for the
NetApp operating system.
c. Select NAS for storage type.
d. Enter the volume size based on the guidelines stated previously.
e. Enter 0% for Snapshot reserve.
f.

Select Thin Provisioned.

5. Click the Storage Efficiency tab on the Create Volume dialog.


6. If the Enable Storage Efficiency check box displays, select it.
7. Click Create to add the new volume.

Configure the Storage Volume


1. Clear the Snapshot schedule for the volume.
a. From the Home tab on OnCommand System Manager, double-click the appropriate storage system.
b. In the navigation pane, click Storage, then Volumes.
c. Right-click on a volume. Select Snapshot, then select Configure from the submenu. The Configure Volume
dialog appears.
d. Enter 0% for Snapshot reserve.
e. Select Make snapshot directory visible.
f.

Clear Enable scheduled snapshots.

g. Click OK.
2. If the Enable Storage Efficiency check box is not available on the Storage Efficiency tab of the Create Volume
dialog, configure A-SIS deduplication on the volume by using the command line.
a. Turn on deduplication by entering:
sis on /vol/volume_name
b. Turn off the deduplication schedule by entering:
sis config -s - /vol/volume_name
Tip: The status of A-SIS deduplication for all volumes can be reviewed by entering:
sis status

Launch DPX
1. On the master server desktop, double-click the DPX desktop icon.

2. In the Connect dialog box, select the master server. Enter the default user name, sysadmin, and the password
created during installation. The management console appears.
Note: To launch from a client node, click Start > All Programs > Management Console.

Run a Backup
The following scenario performs a DPX backup. A client node is backed up to a volume on the storage system. Clientside deduplication is automatically performed.
To define and run a backup:
Note: Run a CHKDSK operation before the first DPX backup of a node. Any reported problems must be repaired prior to
running the backup.
1. On the function tab bar, select Backup.
2. On the Task Panel, under Backup Modes, select Block.
3. On the Task Panel, under Job Tasks, click Block Backup Wizard.
4. Click New Job.
5. On the Select Source window, click a selection box to select a node to back up. Alternatively, select a single volume
on the node.
6. On the Select Destination window, select as your backup destination an open storage volume or the NetApp storage
volume you created.
7. On the Save window, name the job and click Save Job.
8. Click Finish to close the Block Backup Wizard.
9. In the task panel, select Run Backup Job.
10. Select the job and click OK. The backup job starts.

Monitor the Job


Once the backup job starts, you can monitor it.
To monitor a job:
1. On the function tab bar, select Monitor Jobs or in the task panel, select Monitor Job.
2. In the top pane of the Monitor Jobs window, select the job to monitor, right-click and select Monitor.
3. In the bottom pane, the job monitor displays a dynamic log of job activity.
4. When the job completes, the Job Monitor window displays job_name Completed at the upper left.
Note: After a base backup completes, it is strongly recommended to perform backup verification. Subsequent backups
are incrementals and depend on the base backup for integrity. See Verifying a Block Backup by Using iSCSI Mapping in
the User's Guide.

Run a Restore
There are two Block restore methods:

Standard method. In this method, data is transferred from the restore source to the restore destination.

Instant Access. In this method, the backup data is immediately made available as a drive mapping on a client you
select.

Restore Standard Method


The following simple scenario performs a restore job. In the example, a folder on the node that was backed up is restored
to a location on a different node.
To restore using the standard method:
1. On the function tab bar, select Restore.
2. On the task pane, select Block.
3. In the sources pane, expand the resource tree of the node that you backed up. Then select resources to restore.
4. In the destination pane, expand the display and select a directory to restore to.
Note: If you do not select a restore destination, the files are restored to the original location.
5. In the task panel, select Save Restore Job. The Save Job dialog box appears.
6. Name the job and select OK.
7. In the task panel, select Run Restore Job. The restore job starts. Monitor a restore job in the same way you monitor
a backup job.

Restore Instant Access


Instant Access exploits iSCSI target-attach technology to provide rapid temporary access to data stored on a storage
system. Once Instant Access is initialized, snapshots on storage systems appear as local, fully accessible read/write
drives.
Note: Instant Access requires Microsoft iSCSI Initiator on the node that you will map to.
To restore using Instant Access:
1. On the function tab bar, select Restore.
2. On the task panel, select Block.
3. In the sources pane, expand the display and browse to a backup snapshot. Right-click on the snapshot.

4. Select Map from the menu.The Instant Access Mapping dialog appears.
5. From the Node List, select the node to map to. This node must have iSCSI Initiator installed. In the Mount Point
List, select an unutilized drive letter to map to. Click OK.
6. When you receive a message indicating the mapping operation was successful, you can access the recovered data
on the mapped drive.
To unmap to recover storage space:
1. Once mapping is no longer needed, unmap to recover storage space. In the sources pane in the restore window, rightclick the node that contains the drive to unmap.
2. From the context menu, select Show Mapped Drives. The Instant Access Unmapping dialog appears.
3. From the Drive List menu, select the drive to unmap. Click Unmap. Click OK to confirm.

The following describes the content included in each manual and indicates the intended audience. You are encouraged to
read through this information for an understanding of where to find the information you are looking for. Also, use the

Quick Start Guide
This document is intended for administrators and other end users of DPX. It is the starting point for understanding DPX
documentation and provides a roadmap for using the documentation. The Quick Start Guide contains procedures for
creating a NetApp storage volume or DPX open storage volume, provides procedures for a simple DPX backup and
recovery scenario, and describes how to obtain additional information including technical support and online resources.
Deployment Guide
This document is intended for those who are responsible for setting up DPX at customer sites. This might be a Catalogic
field technician or a NetApp certified field technician who also has familiarity with DPX and its licensing. The guide
contains instructions for setting up a NetApp storage system for DPX backups. It also presents, in abbreviated form,
procedures found in the User's Guide and Reference Guide, including installing DPX, running a software update, setting
up a DPX Enterprise, setting up Catalog protection, setting up a tape library, and configuring media. At the conclusion of
the implementation, the customer is ready to perform DPX backups and recoveries using the features provided by their
DPX license.
Users Guide
This document is intended for administrators and other end users of DPX. It contains information and procedures for the
most commonly used functions of Catalogic DPX. The topics covered in the Users Guide assume that your Enterprise is
deployed and that Catalogic DPX is installed and configured. The Users Guide includes:

Product Overview. Describes the management console and procedures for launch and login.

Disk-to-Disk Data Protection. Describes procedures for DPX Block Data Protection, remote seeding using NetApp
storage or open storage, Instant Access to data, and NetApp SnapVault Management. Also, it provides an overview
of Bare Metal Recovery.

Virtual Environments. Describes Full Virtualization, Instant Virtualization, and Rapid Return to Production. Also,
describes procedures for Agentless VMware Backup.

Application Support. Describes data protection procedures for major applications, including SharePoint, Exchange,

Reference Guide
This document is intended for administrators with appropriate licenses to use DPX features. Other users might be limited
to a subset of the features. The Reference Guide contains information, considerations, and procedures for the less
commonly used features of Catalogic DPX. The more commonly used functions are described in the Users Guide. The
Reference Guide includes:

Installation. Describes procedures for installing, upgrading, and updating DPX on Windows, Linux, and other
platforms. Also includes information about protecting and maintaining the Catalog and describes administrator
privileges and security considerations.

Configuration. Describes procedures for configuring DPX by using the management console.

Operation. Describes procedures for defining and running backup, copy, and restore jobs by using the management
console and performing additional tasks using scripts. Also, includes details on controlling tape devices and migrating
tapes, and managing reports and logs. Procedures for DPX Block Data Protection jobs are described in the Users
Guide.

Tape Library Setup. Describes procedures for creating the media changer device file needed to enable
communication between DPX and the tape library as well as defining tape library properties.

Clusters. Describes procedures for setting up a Windows or Novell cluster to work with DPX.

Special Procedures. Describes procedures for setting up special tape libraries.

Interfaces. Describes setup and usage of application interfaces not included in the User's Guide. This includes
NDMPbackup and restore for disks and tapes. The remaining application interfaces are set up outside the
management console.

DPXExchange Mailbox Recovery. This application allows administrators to easily recover mailbox items from
unmounted Exchange databases and Information Store files. Additionally, EMBR enables copying, searching,
and analyzing email and email attachments.

DPXSharePoint Object Recovery. This application allows administrators to find, recover, and restore entire
SharePoint sites or individual SharePoint server objects. Additionally, SPOR can be used to locate and restore
individual items, without having to restore entire databases, volumes, or servers.

Bare Metal Recovery Guide


This document is intended for administrators who must restore an entire system environment for an individual computer.
A full recovery using Bare Metal Recovery includes the operating system, point-in-time backed up data, and Exchange,
SQL Server, and Oracle applications if applicable. If the computer being recovered is a master server, Bare Metal
Recovery restores the DPX application.
The Bare Metal Recovery Guide describes procedures for restoring a machine with Windows and Linux.
Upgrade Assessment Tool Quick Start Guide
This document is intended for administrators who want to upgrade to Catalogic DPX 4.3. It provides instruction on using
the Upgrade Assessment Tool. The UAT scans your Enterprise and generates a report identifying feature differences and

upgrade concerns you need to be aware of when upgrading from BEX 3.4 or Catalogic Data Protection Software 4.0 to

jobname, devicepath, qtree name, etc. Use the English character set only.
