AE311 Aerodynamics

(2016-17, Odd Semester)

Tutorial 1

1. Prove the following relation (i, j, k range over 1, 2, 3) [ Refer Levi-Civita tensor and Understanding Viscoelasticity ]
(a) ij jk = ik
(b) ij ji = 3
(c) ij ai = aj
(d) ijk ijm = 2km
(e) ijk jki = 6
(f) ijk aj ak = 0
(g) a b = ijk ai bj
2. Using tensor analysis (index notation), verify the following vector identities
(a) a (b c) = b (c a) = c (a b)
(b) a (b c) = (a c)b (a b)c
(c) (a b) (c d) = (a c)(b d) (a d) (b c)
(d) u u = ( 12 u u) u ( u)
(e) (a b) = b ( a) a ( b)
(f) () = 0

(where is scalar)

(g) ( a) = 0
(h) (a) = ( a) + a
ijk can also be defined as the scalar triple product of unit vectors, ei (ej ek ).
3. Show that the scalar product Sij ji vanishes identically if Sij is a symmetric tensor and
ij is skew symmetric.
4. Show that the dyadic product of two vectors, a b, is a second order tensor
5. Express the Navier Stokes equation for incompressible flows in cylindrical polar co-ordinates.
(Note: Exercise caution while expressing the components of velocity gradient tensor (V)
in polar co-ordinates)
6. The equation representing the balance of thermal energy in a compressible fluid is given as
De
Dv
= p
+q+
Dt
Dt
with being the viscous term. Show that always > 0, and explain the consequences
7. Watch the following NCFMF video lectures
(a) Deformation of Continuous Media
Describe the motion of plane shear flow explained in this video using symmetric and
anti-symmetric strain rate tensors. Using this comment on the orientation of the
principal axes and rotation of the element
(b) Eulerian and Lagrangian Descriptions
