EMORY & HENRY COLLEGE Letter of Reference for Chris Hatcher @ | have known Chris Hatcher as a student at Emory & Henry College where | am a professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance, I feel | can speak about Chris as an undergraduate student. {As an undergraduate at E&H, Chris majored in Mass Communications and took quite a number of courses in Sport Management as well. At that time, I taught the introductory Sport Management course in which Chris was a student. He is quite knowledgeable and enthusiastic regarding all things sports, so his interest level and attention to assignments in this class were first rate, as it was a course that was a great match for him, But a bit more unusual, given his areas of academic interest, is that he took almost every course | taught in the HHP department; Personal Health, Safety Education, School & Community Health. These courses have almost nothing in common with Mass Communications or Sport Management, and yet Chris still brought the same enthusiasm and interest to these courses as well. By the time Chris enrolled in School & Community Health, | had already had him in three other classes and had come to know him and his academic abilities, School & Community Health is for students who are preparing to teach health, While the course work does cover many aspects of community health, the ‘main content is preparing lesson plans. The primary course objective is for each student to construct a set of lesson they could use in future teaching opportunities. Typically, if a student is not an education ‘major of some sort, | don’t allow them to take the course. Lesson planning can be challenging and time intensive even if one is interested in teaching, but for students who are not in the education field, it can be a puzzle they may find they have no interest in solving. With Chris, however, | explained to him the non-education major policy for the course, how demanding lesson planning can be, and he still wanted to take the course. Perhaps because | had come to know him, | allowed him to remain, something | think Thave done twice in the last 35 years. ‘Tums out, Chris did well with lesson plan development. Through the progression of assignments during the semester, he was able to do well at each step along the way. His lesson plans were not only thorough and well written; he used the resources available to include creative methods that would enhance the lesson content. While many students will reach this point of lesson plan development in time, Chris did so sooner than most. Chris admitted at the time that this was his first experience developing lesson plans. If he was this capable in lesson planning in an area outside his academic field, it seems he would be all the more so when planning for teaching history. Chris is a likeable person who can engage and converse with persons of all ages. Based on my oars with Chris over the years, were !n a position to hire a teacher, | would recommend Chris.
