LESSON
SUMMARY

How is
Theory
applied in
this
lesson?

Students will collect data as teams on the circumference and

diameter of various objects of different sizes. They will collaborate on
Google+ to synthesize their data in one place. Then they will graph
and analyze their data as a group.
This lesson uses data analysis which allows students to study the
relationship between circumference and diameter. Data analysis is
crucial to the development of theories and new ideas. By paying
close attention to patterns, the stories behind outliers, relationships
between and among data sets, and the external factors that may
have affected the data, students may come to have a deeper
understanding of the crucial distinction between theory and
evidence, (Analyzing Data, n.d.). In addition, this lesson plan
incorporates online sharing of data amongst students. The students
will be using Google+ to share their data with the whole class.

OBJECTIVE.
What will your students be able to do?
Students will be able to collect data, graph and analyze data. They will understand
the relationship between circumference and diameter, will be able to see the
correlation on graphs.
ASSESSMENT
How will you know whether your students have made progress toward the
objective?
How and when will you assess mastery?
Students in class assignment of organizing the data and plotting the data on a
graph will be used to assess their understanding. Further assessment will be done
as a discussion with the whole class and teacher.
COMMON CORE
How will you address Common Core standards?

DIFFERENTIATION
How will you differentiate your instruction to reach the diversity of learners in your
classroom?
How will you address your English Learners?
List the specific strategies you will use.
The article by Willig et al. discusses 10 best strategies when teaching ELL
students. I plan to implement all of these in my lesson plan.
Create a vocabulary banks
Use manipulatives
Modify teacher talk and practice wait time
Elicit nonverbal responses, like a thumbs up or down.
Use sentence frames
Design questions and prompts for different proficiency levels
Use prompts to support student responses
Consider language and math skills when grouping students
Utilize partner talk
Ask for choral responses from students (2016).

INTRODUCTION OF NEW MATERIAL (10 minutes

suggested)
What key points will you emphasize and reiterate?
How will you ensure that students actively take-in
information?
How will you vary your approach to make information
accessible to all students?
Which potential misunderstandings will you anticipate?
Why will students be engaged and interested?

GUIDED PRACTICE (15 minutes suggested)
How will you clearly state and model behavioral
expectations?
How will you ensure that all students have multiple
opportunities to practice?
How will you scaffold practice exercises from easy to
hard?
How will you monitor and correct student performance?
Why will students be engaged and interested?

We will discuss how data can be
mins analyzed. Teacher will ask the
following questions:
Is my data source valid?
What are the different
categories of data?
What problem am I trying to
solve?
Is there missing information?
Is there extra, unnecessary
data?
Are there places where the
data are concentrated or
clumped?
What trends are visible in the
data?
Are there values for which
there are no data?
Are there data points that
have unusual values?
Are these values consistent
with my predictions?
Do I have enough
background information to
analyze this data?
What level of accuracy is
required in my analysis?
What is the range, mean,
median, mode, and so on?
Why might there be an
increase/decrease in the
data?
How might this data change
if...? (This may be a change
in history, market value,
audience questioned, etc.)
What is the most appropriate
way to summarize my
findings?
Based on this data, what will
happen in the future?
For what other data sample
might I use a similar graph?,
(Analyzing Data, n.d.).

CLOSING (5 minutes suggested)

How will students summarize what they learned?
How will students be asked to state the significance of
what they learned?
How will you provide all students with opportunities to
demonstrate mastery of (or progress toward) the
objective?

What other things have positive or
mins negative relationships on graphs?
For example, the number of hours
you study has a positive
relationship with the grade you
achieve. Your weight decreases
with the number of hours you
exercise. This is a negative
correlation. We can collect data on
these scenarios and see a
relationship once we graph the
data. This is why analyzing data
comes in handy.

STUDENTS
Ask
questions
Turn in
their
graphs and
data along
with their
essay.
