Fairnesswascentraltothelivesofouroldergenerations(Ikeepaskingwhythatwas,tonoanswers!).Evenlongbeforethe
Britisharrivedinthesubcontinent,thefaireramongtheIndianswerewellreceivedinsocialsettingsandmarriagemarkets.I
remembermygrandmotherreferringtohergrandmotherasbeingaswhiteassnow(andhencebeingimmenselybeautiful).
Therefore,thesubcontinenthasalwaysbeenaneasytargetforbigcosmeticfirmsastheycanfurtheranexistingculturalbiasand
lureprospectivecustomersintobuyingfairnessproducts.AdvertisementsinSriLanka,BangladeshandPakistancomparelittleto
thehugefairnessmarketthatIndiaseemstoposses.
TherehavebeenseveralcommercialsinIndia,overthedecades,whichhavespokenabouthowyoungmendesirewomenwhoare
fair,andhowfairnessinwomenisapreconditiontosuccess.However,theadthatgottheactivistsandsocialcommentatorsup
inarmswastheoneonvaginalfairness.

TheadhitthescreensearlyMarch,buttheshockanddistressthatitcausedtobloggersandcolumnistsalikeissuchthatthe
matterisstillkeptaliveontheblogosphereandtwitter.Addinginsulttoinjury,theadmakerjustifieditinoneofhiscolumnsfor
apopularweekly:
TheonlyreasonIcanofferforwhypeoplelikefairness,isthis:ifyouhavetwobeautifulgirls,oneofthemfair
andtheotherdark,youseethefairgirlsfeaturesmoreclearly.Thisisbecausehercomplexionreflectsmorelight.

Iunderstandthepsychologyofacapitalisticsocietywhichthrivesonsellinguselessproductstothemasses.Suchadsholdupa
mirrortooursociety,theadmanandthelikeareonlyfeedingonthefodderthatthesocietyprovidesthemwith.Our
responsibilityasagenerationthathasinheritedadeeprootedbias,istoensurethatcolouroftheskinbecomesnothingmore
thanthatthecolouroftheskin,abiologicalfactorthatdiffersfromracetorace.Theminutewelinkitwithsocietalstructures
likecasteandclass,bifurcationsofsuperiorityandinferiorityseepin.
WhileIwasastudentinNewYork,duringourusualcoffeetabletalks,awhiteAmericanfriendwhisperedintomyear,
Ihearmenthesedayswantwomenlookingfairallover!Ihavestoppedwearingabikinitothebeach!shehalf
giggled.
ThiscaughtmebysurpriseasIhadthoughtthatpeopleintheWestwantedasexylayeroftanontheirbodies.Afteralittlebitof
searchingaround,Ifound,justlikeallcapitalistconsumerproducts,virginalwhitenessisalsoaborrowedconcept.TheUShas
hadvaginalandanalwhiteningcreamsforafewyearsnow,andresearchersarenowlookingattheirpossiblehealthrisks.
DrSachinDhawan,awellknowndermatologistandbeautyconsultanttomanyleadingskinclinicsinNewDelhiandGurgaon
said,
Weneedtoknowthepropereffectofsuchproductsthatseemuselessplayingonfancynotionsofbeautyinthe
mindsofwomen.
DrJoyeetaBasu,fromSitaramBhartiaInstituteofScienceandResearch,NewDelhi,saidthelongtermeffectsofwhitening
productsarestillunclear.
Studieshavenotbeenconductedovermanyyearstostudyifthesehaveharmfuleffects,shesaid,so[they]
cannotbecondemnedconclusivelyforanytoxicityuntilproven.

IndianTVandmoviesshowabnormallyfairIndians(byIndianstandards),PakistaniTVand
mediaoftenshowdarkskinnedPakistaniactressesandmodels.Thisisnotsurprisingsincethe

withethnicaffinity.Look,Iamspeakingenglishwithyouandmykidsdon'tknowawordof
anyindopaklanguage.YetIhavenoEnglishbloodinme.Thus,thesocalledaryaninvasion
isnothingbutamigrationoflanguageandnotmuchofamigrationofpeople.Andthereis
