The Attributes and Aspirations of the

Engineers of 2020

Aspirations are the vision of the people to a positive future. As


Engineers, we too, have our own vision to what we want for our future.
In the year 2020, we aspire to be still grounded into fundamentals of
mathematics and science, and yet be able to innovate and develop
with higher aspects. That through Engineering, our profound impact on
sociocultural systems will be understood and appreciated. We aspire
that we be most competent to address the worlds complex and
forever changing challenges. That we be able to embrace potentialities
offered by creativity to accommodate more fields of endeavor. And in
that way, we will be recognized as worthy partners of the government
in leading with positive influences in the making of public policies,
addressing to a wise, informed, and an economically sustainable
development that will begin in educational institutions, with the help of
educators that will take proactive efforts to help create prepared
engineers to adapt in whatever challenge in creating a balance of
living for well-developed and thriving countries alike.
But, in order to achieve these aspirations, we must attain certain
attributes that would make engineers be fit to meet these visions
despite of impending challenges ahead. In the year 2020, both old and
new engineers must possess strong analytical skills, practical
ingenuity, creativity, and are good communicators, practices good
leadership and high ethical standards, with a strong sense of
professionalism. Given the uncertain character of the world in which
engineers will work in the year 2020, us engineers must have
something which cannot be described into a single word. It involves
dynamism, agility, resilience, and flexibility. And most of all, the
engineers of the year 2020 must remain learners for the rest of their
lives.

With these qualities, our future engineers can assure to flourish despite
of challenges ahead of them. That no matter how hard it is, we can and
will reshape ourselves to the needs of time.
