Intermediate I Disclosure Document

Timberline Middle School

Mrs. Askew
Course Description: Intermediate Math I is a foundational course exploring the
fundamentals of four main areas: (1) developing understanding of and applying
proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational
numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; (3) solving problems
involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with twoand three- dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and
volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples.
Textbook and Materials: Students will be responsible to bring each of the following
supplies to class EVERY day:
Textbook: Students will each be given a Glencoe Math, Course 2 2013 textbook. This
text will be supplemented with material from other sources. Students are required to
take care of their books. If their textbook is irreparable or severely damaged, they will be
charged the full amount to replace the textbook. Students will also be given access to an
online version of the textbook for additional enrichment or remediation at home.
3-ring binder with loose-leaf, lined paper: Students should have a 3-ring binder
exclusively for this math class. The size of binder that is preferred is a 1.5 or 2. This
larger size binder will allow the student to keep their notes, quizzes, homework, AND
textbook all in the same place.
Pencils and erasers: Math is all about practice. Practice means youre trying, and thats
an expectation in class. Have at least 3 pencils and erasers ready to go BEFORE class
starts every day.
Colored Pen: We correct our homework daily, and students are expected to provide their
own correction pen. This correction pen should be a colored pen like red, blue, purple, or
pink. NOT black. Black pens are too close to the color of pencil markings on paper.
Calculator: Students should have their own calculator for this class if possible. They will
use this calculator for Intermediate I and Intermediate II (next year). A TI-30 series is
preferred. They are less than $20 at most stores. I do have a small number of calculators
in class that your student can borrow, but they wont be able to check them out or take
them home.
TMS Math Department Grading Policy:
The purpose of grades is to clearly communicate to students, parents, and teachers what
the student has learned and mastered. The scores that are in skyward will communicate
the specific standards the student has learned in class. These standards are graded on a
four-point scale, as explained below. This four-point scale is crucial in identifying to
students, parents, and teachers specifically what the student has mastered and what
areas need to be retaught or remediated.
0 -Student has not demonstrated any mastery.

Practice Sheets (homework): Students will be given a practice sheet (homework) each
class period that will help solidify concepts and activities learned in class. This will be
graded as part of their 5 points daily participation.
Mastery checks (quizzes): Mastery checks will be given in order to determine students
mastery level using the four scale grading system above. In order to retake a mastery
check, the practice sheets included in that mastery check must be completed with a
score of at least 4 out of 5.
Mid-chapter formative assessments (unit tests): Formative assessments may be given in
the middle and/or at the end of each unit to determine retention of mastery level. This
score will update and replace the scores from the semi-daily mastery check scores.
Students should retain the information and be able to apply that concept to a more
challenging and/or real-life example.
Term Final: A Term Final will be given at the end of term to solidify concepts learned
during that term. This will also be graded on the four scale grading system and will not
replace previous standard rating scale on mastery checks and formative assessments.
Grade distribution:
Participation and Practice Sheets (homework and participation) will be worth 5% of the
students overall grade. Beware that because these points are not tied to the four scale
grading system communicating mastery, the points will not be worth as much towards
the students overall grade. Quizzes and unit tests will be worth 75% of your students
grade. The term final will be worth 20% of a students grade for that term.

Attendance and Tardies: Attendance is imperative for success. The topics covered in
every math class build on one another and missing class could delay success and
learning. Students are expected to be in class, sitting quietly at their desks fully prepared
before the tardy bell rings. If they are late, they miss announcements and the warm-ups
and as such, some vital review. If students are absent, they are responsible for finding
out what they missed. They can ask a classmate or ask me before or after school. I
adhere strictly to the Timberline Middle School attendance policy which can be found in
the student handbook.
Student Behavior:
At Timberline Middle School students are taught school-wide behavioral expectations,
called the Grizzly Guide. The Grizzly Guide states that students are respectful,
responsible, resourceful and brave.
Teachers at Timberline specifically teach the Grizzly Guide and reinforce it by distributing
Pawsitive Tickets, which students can exchange for prizes.
When a students behavior is contrary to the Grizzly Guide, he or she is re-taught the
behavioral expectations with quick feedback from an adult. If the student repeats the
inappropriate behavior after being re-taught, teachers may provide an opportunity to redirect the students behavior through a Think Time, where the student completes a
reflective worksheet, and apology. Major behavioral infractions, such as physical violence
or vandalism, result in an office referral.
See the online Student Handbook for more information about the Grizzly Guide and
Timberlines school-wide positive behavior plan.
Also, students should keep backpacks and other belongings under their desks and out of
aisles to protect contents and prevent injury.
Contact Information:
Email is the best and fastest method to reach me. Please do not leave me a voicemail at
school. Our classroom phones are NOT reliable.
I look forward to a great year ahead!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Askew
