Siblings sweep showmanship

LIMA A lot of hard work paid off in a big way for

the three Elwer children this year at the Allen County Fair.
Troy, 16, Hannah, 14, and Halle, 12, each brought home
their respective Swine Showmanship titles: Beginner,
Junior and Senior, respectively.
Their father, Scott Elwer, has been at every Allen
County Fair for the past 34 years and he cant recall siblings taking all three divisions.
Its pretty special. Im extremely proud of all three of
them, Elwer, the Ag instructor at Jefferson High School
and the Delphos FFA advisor said. Showmanship is much
more important in my eyes. Its truly about the kids talent
and how hard theyve worked with the animal. It was also
humbling to see all three of them driving together toward
this goal. It continues a tradition. Me, my brothers and my
sister all showed hogs at the fair.
Troy also stepped it up and took overall award of
Showman of Showmen, going to head to head with both
of his sisters.

Both Delphos FFA members,
the pair were both at their last
Allen County Fair as showmen.
Ive started with dairy beef
calves and then I helped my cousin with her beef steer for the
Putnam County Fair and I really
liked it so from then on, Ive
shown beef cattle, Siefker said.
I also had pigs for three years

along with cattle but that was too
much with sports and beef cattle.
The 2015 St. Johns graduate
enjoys being in the ring.
Showing is my favorite, he
said. It takes work ethic. Youre
up at 6 a.m. and you put them in
after dark. You learn a lot of discipline and responsibility.
Siefker has taken his talents at

the fair to his current employment.
I work at Winegardner Show
Cattle in Harrod and I break calves
and work show heifers, he said.
Its like Im getting ready for the
fair every day.
Siefker now attends the
University of Northwestern Ohio,
majoring in agribusiness. In his
spare time, he likes to hang out with

friends and has another pastime.
I like to take naps, he said
with a chuckle.
Calvelage also added Best Beef
Improvement and Rate of Gain
with her steer to her winnings this
year.

this past week would have noticed some activity at the front
of the school. Miller Contacting of Ottoville broke ground
for the new Career Connections Center being built at the
school.
Miller Contracting Vice President of Project Management
and Estimation Josh Clay is excited about the new project.
We went after this project hard and competitively, he
said. We gave the school the district best price we could
and well give them a nice project as well.
Clay was happy to get the ball rolling on the project.
We were happy to be moving forward. this is a big project and we are going to complete it by February or sooner,
Clay said. Of course the progress of this project is going to
be weather-dependent. They all are.
Miller prepared the building pad site, moving dirt and
bring in stone in preparation for the pad, plumbing work and
then the foundation pour.

DELPHOS On Aug. 18, officers spoke
with a male who reported a lawn mower
missing. The male told officers that he loaned
the mower to a friend and upon attempting to
get it back, he found that it was now missing.
On Aug. 19, officers responded to the
area of 100 South Clay Street in response
to lines hanging down after
being struck by a large truck.
Officers arrived and found that
the lines were telephone and
cable lines.
On Aug. 19, officers were
dispatched to the 400 block of
South Canal Street to investigate a theft incident. Officers
met with the complainant and
found that his wallet was stolen. The name of a suspect was
given and the incident remains
under investigation.
On Aug. 20, officers were
dispatched to investigate a second theft complaint in the 400
block of South Canal Street.
Officers met with the complainant and found
that an electronic item was taken.
On Tuesday, officers, along with Delphos
EMS, were dispatched to the 1000 block of
Lima Avenue in reference to an unresponsive male. Upon arrival, officers located the
male and EMS began administering aid to
him. While investigating the incident, officers found drug abuse instruments as well
as suspected heroin. The male regained consciousness and was transported to the hospital
for treatment. The case will be reviewed for
criminal charges.
On Tuesday, an officer on patrol observed
a vehicle being operated with a registration
violation and conducted a traffic stop. Upon

making contact with the driver, Christopher
Peters, it was found that he was operating
the vehicle on a suspended drivers license.
Peters was issued a citation for driving under
a 12-point suspension as well as the registration violation.
On Tuesday, officers were sent to the 400
block of East Seventh Street in reference
to a neighbor dispute. Upon
arrival, officers met with
the male complainant and
found that a female neighbor
had made a threat to him.
A report was taken and the
male was advised of the victim filing procedures for Lima
Municipal Court.
On Wednesday, officers
were dispatched to the 500
block of South Main Street
to investigate a domestic violence incident. Upon arrival,
officers met with the female
victim and found that the
male had fled the residence.
Officers attempted to locate
the male, but were unsuccessful. After investigating the incident, officers found that the
male, 32-year-old Joseph Thayer, had caused
physical harm to the female and therefore will
be facing a charge of domestic violence.
On Wednesday, officers were sent to the
900 block of Southridge Drive in reference to
a dog running at large. Upon arrival, officers
met with the complainant, who stated that his
neighbors dog had escaped the fenced back
yard and charged at him. A family member
secured the dog and returned it to the residence. A report was taken and will be forwarded to the Van Wert County Dog Wardens
Office for their review.

Joy was born on Feb. 20,
1945, in Lima to Lois Caroline

College (Toledo), Rochester
Institute of Technology and
Nazareth College (Rochester). As an artist in many media and
an interior designer, she created beauty for hundreds of people
throughout her life.
Joy is survived by her daughter, Allison Christine (Bryan)
Powers (Paul), son Jason Philip Bryan (Kelli), husband Reade
Bailey Nimick, Jr., sister Nancy (Welch) Williams (Art), stepson Christopher Reade Nimick, step-daughter Kathryn Elizabeth
Nimick and beloved grandchildren, nieces and nephew.

Hubie Byrne, 79, of Ottoville,
died 12:45 a.m., Tuesday at St.
Ritas Medical Center, Lima.
He was born Aug. 2, 1937, in
Mandale to Orion and Edwina
(Miller) Byrne, who preceded
him in death.
On Nov. 20, 1954, he married Carol Ann Miller, who survives in Ottoville.
Other survivors also include
five children, Terry (Margie)
Byrne, Denise (Alan) Calvelage,
Gary (Joyce) Byrne and Craig
(Sue) Byrne, all of Ottoville,
and Nicole (Gregg) Unverferth of Aurora; 14 grandchildren; 10
great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Eugene (Clarice) Byrne and
Robert (Jean) Byrne, both of Ottoville.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Rita M. ByrneLewandowski; and a brother, Alfred Byrne.
Hubie retired from Chrysler Amplex in Van Wert and also
ICCC Parish Center, where he was the manager. He was a member
of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, a retired
member of the Ottoville Fire Department, Ottoville School Board,
Ottoville Lions Club and Ottoville VFW Auxiliary. He enjoyed
the outdoors, was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and
great-grandfather and loved spending time with his family attending their many sports events and activities. Hubies legacy was that
he was gentle, generous and there to make you laugh and smile.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday at Immaculate
Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, the Very Reverend Jerome
Schetter officiating. Burial followed in St. Marys Cemetery,
Ottoville.
Memorial donations may be given to the ICCC Window Fund,
Ottoville EMS or the Ottoville Branch of the Putnam County
Library.

Weather Service officials from the Northern
Indiana Office met with Van Wert County
Emergency Management Director Rick
McCoy Thursday afternoon to conduct a site
survey of damage done within the county by
Wednesday evenings storms.
Weather Service Personnel were able to
confirm that four separate tornadoes struck
the county in what has been considered one of
Ohios worst tornado outbreaks in the month
of August. Three of the tornadoes have been
rated at EF 0 and one tornado rated as an EF
1. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from
the storm.
As severe storms rolled into the county
on Wednesday, law enforcement, fire department and amateur radio spotters were able to
confirm each individual tornado when calling
in reports to the EMA office. On Thursday
morning, McCoy did a fly-over of the county
compliments of the Van Wert Airport and area
pilot Fred Pond. Air photos and video were
also used to verify the individual tornadoes
and damage paths. National Weather Service
personnel then confirmed the extent of the
storm in their ground surveys.
Everything begin Wednesday afternoon
when a powerful supercell thunderstorm
developed near Kokomo, Indiana, producing
a large, violent tornado which struck the city.
The storm kept producing tornadoes as it
moved due east in Indiana, which prompted
the Storm Prediction Center to issue a tornado watch to the south of Van Wert County,
including Adams and Mercer counties.
There had been no indication that a severe
outbreak would occur that day, said McCoy,
but once it got started, every indication was
that severe weather would remain to our
south.
As tornadoes moved across western Adams
County, McCoy activated spotters from the
Mendon, Chatt and Rockford fire departments
in Mercer County and the Willshire and Ohio
City fire departments in Van Wert County,
relaying to them that tornadoes were still
expected across northern Mercer County and
would continue in an easterly direction.
At 5:54 p.m., the National Weather
Service issued a tornado warning for southeast Adams County and extreme southwest
Van Wert County with a report that a tornado

was approaching Berne moving east. McCoy
advised Willshire and Ohio City to activate
their sirens at that time in the event the
storm skirted the Van Wert/Mercer line. Two
minutes later, the Weather Service issued a
tornado warning for Mercer County, advising
the storm would move into northern Mercer
County. At 6:04 p.m., National Weather
Service advised the tornado was near Monroe
and Berne. At this point, Van Wert and
Mercer county spotters could observe two
tornadoes on the ground. As the two tornadoes moved several miles east of Monroe,
they both lifted off of the ground heading
towards Willshire at 30 mph at around 6:15
p.m. It was at this point when the unexpected occurred: one storm cell moved across
southern Mercer County and put a tornado
on the ground just south of State Route 33
and five miles east of the state line. It was
the northern supercell thunderstorm that did
the unthinkable, just like the 2002 deadly F-4
tornado that hit Van Wert County.
It was at this point that radar indicated
a sharp left turn of the storm, bringing the
supercell in towards Willshire with spotters
reporting a large rotating wall cloud trying
to reproduce a tornado. As the storm was
recycling, radar indicated a strengthening of
the storm and that it would likely produce a
large tornado at any time. Spotters continued
to report the wall cloud with brief funnels but
no touchdown as it moved slowly to the northeast from Willshire. At 6:32 p.m., the EMA
activated the sirens for the city of Van Wert
and the other villages in the southern part of
the county as it was now determined that the
path would likely bring it towards Van Wert.
Spotters again began to report a large tornado on the ground with a second funnel aloft
near German Church Road east of Convoy
on Heller Road moving northeast. The large
tornado crossed US 224 and remained on the
ground for just over four miles approaching
Wolfcale Road east of Dull Robinson Road.
At this point, a second tornado touched down
a quarter mile west of the first. At Wolfcale
Road, the first tornado lifted and the second
tornado continued northeast for just over one
mile and then lifted at US 30 and Richey
Road.

Ohio is the 25th state to

adopt a medical marijuana
law. This law takes effect on
Sept. 8. Proactively
addressing potential
concerns and questions about the law,
the Allen County
Health Department
answered the following questions:
Who will administer this program?
The newly established
Medical
Marijuana Control
Commission in the
Ohio Department of
Commerce
What does this
law allow?
This law will
allow patients with
certain health conditions to purchase
and use marijuana in
the following forms:
oils, tinctures, plant
material, edibles and patches.
It may also be used in a vapor
form but it cannot be smoked.
Patients are not permitted to
grow it. The medical cannabis used by patients must be
cultivated and processed in
Ohio.
What happens under this
law that makes medical marijuana legal?
Currently, in the United
States and in Ohio, marijuana is considered a Schedule
I substance, meaning that it
is unsafe, has no accepted
medicinal use and has a high
potential for abuse. When the
law takes effect, marijuana
will be considered a Schedule
II substance in Ohio, meaning that while there is potential for abuse, it does have
medicinal value.
Can any physician prescribe medical marijuana?
Physicians must apply
to the Commission and be
registered before they are
able to prescribe marijuana to patients. Physicians
must complete the application process and demonstrate
that they do not have ownership or investment interest
in, or are in agreement with
a cultivator, processor, laboratory or retail dispensary
licensed by the Commission.
A qualifying physician may
recommend marijuana treatment if the patient has one
of approximately 20 qualifying medical conditions and a
physician-patient relationship
has been established.
A recommendation for
marijuana may not exceed

90 days. The physician may
renew the recommendation
after an in-person, follow-up
visit. There is a limit on the
number of times the recommendation may be renewed.
Physicians must adhere to
record-keeping requirements
and must complete an annual
report to the Commission. In
addition, every 90 days, physicians must submit a report
that contains:
The number of patients
they have recommended to
receive treatment with medical marijuana.
The conditions for which
the treatment has been recommended.
Reasons why other treatments were not recommended.
Forms or methods of
medical marijuana that were
used.
How are patients identified who are permitted to
possess and use medical marijuana?
A patient wishing to use
medical marijuana, or a
caregiver seeking to assist
in its use, must apply to the
Commission to be registered.
Applicants that are approved
will be issued an identification card. Individuals who
register as a caregiver are
not permitted to use medical marijuana, only assist a
registered user. A registered

in developing regulations and making

How does this affect drugfree workplace policies?
Employers can still maintain
their current policies. This
bill does not:
Require an employer to
permit an employees use,
possession or distribution of
this drug.
Prohibit an employer
from refusing to hire, discharge or discipline an
employee because of that
persons use, possession, or
distribution of medical marijuana.
Prohibit an employer
from establishing or enforcing a current drug testing policy, drug-free workplace policy or zero-tolerance policy.
Under this bill, an
employee who is discharged
from employment because
of the use of medical marijuana is considered to have
been discharged for a just
cause. In addition, employees who obtained an injury
on the job and the influence
of marijuana was thought to
be the cause of the injury
are ineligible for Workers
Compensation Benefits.

The huge Lincoln Highway garage
sales are over. Lots of people had fun
browsing from sale to sale, as was
evidenced by the slow-moving traffic as shoppers cased all the stands.
Hopefully you were able to find some
treasures! One stand kept track of their
shoppers and had nearly 300 people
visit. Now, thats what I call busy.
Speaking of busy, the Thrift Shop
volunteers have been very busy sorting
through all the many bags of items that
have been dropped off. Be sure to stop
in and look for the treasure you may
have missed. As the hundreds of bags
are sorted through, the display changes
constantly, so be sure to stop in often.
The biggest summer sales are over,
and we had a packed house for both the
25 Cent sale and the Buy-One-Get-One
sale. The selection was great yet and
many people found a lot of nice things.

Susans wedding is past,

but the leftovers remain

Thursday
again, and my plan
to have this column
on its way yesterday
failed. The weeks still
fly by since the wedding is past!
Our refrigerators
are finally getting
emptier. With all the
wedding leftovers,
they were packed. The
garden is also getting
emptied quickly. The
boys pulled the rest of the
corn, green beans, zucchini
and cucumbers. They brought
in red beets and hot peppers that are waiting to be
canned, as well as tomatoes
that need to be made into
juice or something. After a
busy summer, I really dont
mind if the garden is done
early. Our tomatoes had
blight but are doing better.
We made the old-fashioned
remedya mixture of raw
milk and waterand sprayed
the plants several times. It
seemed to help. Our cow
Bessie provides us with more
than enough milk to use. We
now have three little piggies
that help drink the milk and
eat all the excess garden vegetables.
Our new chickens still
arent laying, but the old
chickens provide enough for
us yet. I was glad to have
sister Emma and Jacob share
their eggs for the wedding.
Last year for Timothy and
Elizabeths wedding I didnt
have to buy any eggs, as we
had plenty of our own. It
takes a lot of eggs to make
the noodles, pies, dressing
and other food at a wedding.
Sunday, August 14, was
Timothy and Elizabeths first
anniversary. We took barbecued chicken in and stayed
to eat with them. Mose and
Susan were also there. Most
couples around this community save the top tier of their
wedding cake and put it in
the freezer until their first
anniversary. But Timothy and
Elizabeth didnt get theirs out
yet, as they still had cake

from Mose and Susans wedding.
We canned and froze two
bushels of peaches for Mose
and Susan and us. I have
another bushel on order. Last
week we went to help daughter Elizabeth on Tuesday
and Friday. We cleaned her
basement and canned tomato juice and salsa for her
on Tuesday. Then on Friday
we washed off some walls
and ceilings and cleaned her
whole house. We also washed
windows, curtains and bedding. I think she felt refreshed
to have everything cleaned.
She had been sewing for the
wedding and helping here so
much that her cleaning was
neglected. Today she comes
here to spend the day with
us. We will probably do some
canning.
We had a lot of rain on
Monday afternoon through
Tuesday morning. We had
a total of 4.25 inches. The
ground was so dry and needed it badly. Half of our huge
load of laundry on Monday
wasnt quite dry when the
rain started. Hanging outside
in all that rain, it was wetter
when we brought it in than
when we put it out! Yesterday
we had a nice day, so we just
rewashed it all. So we ended
up having an extra big laundry yesterday. We had a very
nice day to dry everything.
My dads cousin Dave
from this area passed away,
and his funeral was on the
same day as Mose and
Susans wedding. Joe and I
took some time the evening
before the wedding

to go to the viewing
and visitation. Our
sympathy goes out to
his wife, Ruth, and
family. Their daughter
Sherri was a teacher to
several of our children
in the recent years.
Ruth is a cousin to
Joes dad, so we saw
relatives there from
both of our families.
Dads cousin Leroy
from Ohio stopped in
at Mose and Susans
wedding after the
funeral to say Hi to all my
family that was here.
I still remember that when
I was a little girl, our family
would go to visit dads uncle
Mose and Amanda Coblentz
in Hartville, Ohio. Mose
and Amanda were Dave and
LeRoys parents. The part I
remember the most was the
hills in their yard and the fun
of running down them.
I will share the green bean
recipe we used at the wedding. God bless you all!
Green Beans
2 pounds green beans
1/4 cup onions
salt to taste
3 tablespoons butter,
browned
1/4 cup bacon bits
salt and pepper
seasoning salt
Cook green beans and
onions until tender. Add
salt as desired. Drain. Add
browned butter to green beans
and stir to coat. Continue to
heat until the green beans are
steaming hot. Add the bacon
bits along with salt, pepper
and seasoning salt.

Start your day with a hearty breakfast. You might want to double this recipe.
Sausage and Pepper Burritos
2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
1/3 pound kielbasa, chopped
2 red bell peppers, thinly sliced
1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
Salt and pepper
6 large eggs, beaten
1 cup shredded pepper jack cheese, divided
4 large flour tortillas, warmed
1 cup store-bought salsa verde
In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the kielbasa and cook
until browned, 3 to 4 minutes. Add the bell peppers and the onion slices; season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring, until golden-brown, 7 to 8 minutes. Transfer to a large plate.
In the same skillet, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium heat. Add the eggs,
season with salt and pepper, and scramble, 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in the kielbasa mixture and 1/2 cup
cheese.
Divide the egg mixture among the 4 tortillas and roll up burrito-style. Transfer the burritos to
plates and top with the remaining 1/2 cup cheese and the salsa.
Soda Cracker Cookies
2 cups granulated sugar
2/3 cup milk
1 sleeve saltines (1/4 pound), crushed, but not too fine
6 to 8 generous tablespoons creamy peanut butter
Combine sugar and milk in a saucepan over low heat. Bring to a boil and boil for 3 minutes.
Watch carefully because the mixture can boil over depending on the size of the pan.
In the meantime, place crushed saltines and peanut butter in a large bowl. Pour the sugar mixture over the peanut butter and crackers. Combine quickly. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto wax paper.
Allow to set. Store in a covered container with wax paper between the layers. Makes 3 to 4 dozen.

County and other communities for the ingenuity of his
inventions and many labor
saving devices, died 25 June
1942. He was born 30 May
1874 in New Riegel, Ohio
to Victor and Mary Backus.
His mother was an artist
and his father was also an
inventor. His grandfather,
Peter J. Backus, Sr., was a
Frenchman and a hotel proprietor in Paris for 18 years.

Woolworth leases Herrick building

Woolworth Leases Herrick Building
The Woolworth 5 and 10 cent store syndicate has leased the J.S. Herrick store room
at 311 North Main Street, soon to be vacated
by the Swisher sisters, according to a report
now being circulated here. Efforts were made
Tuesday to get in touch with Mr. Herrick to
verify the report, but he could not be found at
the time of going to press.

Pay Off Last of School Houses

Members of the Marian Township Board
of Education at their regular meeting Saturday
afternoon were to have paid off the remaining portion of the debt incurred in erecting
two new school houses this year in Districts
Nos. 2 and 10. The total cost of the structures
was $4,51 and all but $1,051 had been paid
Contractor J.W. Rozelle up to this time. The
new building in District No. 10 was erected
to take the place of the brick structure that
stood for many years on the Lamel Back site.
The frame building that occupied this site was
moved to the east end of the district and the
new building erected in the west end.

Mari Stein shrine at Frank, Ohio. Services
were held at the shrine Sunday, with Bishop
Schrembs, of the diocese of Toledo, as the
principal figure. More than 10,000 persons
were present.
Sells 43 Acre Farm

Chas. Rahrig, a local grocer, has purchased
through the T.J. Welch agency, the Patrick
Cain farm, two and a half miles south of the
city, for $7,500. The tract consists of 42 acres
and is well improved. Mr. Rahrig will not
move onto the farm, buying it merely as an
investment.
Joseph Rahrig Passes Away

A message was received here Wednesday
morning stating that Joseph Rahrig, for many
years a highly respected resident of near
Landeck, had passed away at the home of his
son, Frank Rahrig, at Grafton, O. Death was
due to infirmities of age. He had been in failing health for some time.
The deceased was born in Pennsylvania, on
Oct. 12, 1834, and was past 80 years of age
when he passed on to a better world. When
he was two years old his parents moved from
Pennsylvania to Seneca, Co., O. There Mr.
Rahrig resided until he was 29 years old when
he located on a farm near Landeck. There he
made his home until about six years ago when
he retired and moved to Landeck. Mrs. Rahrig
died about three ago.
Fifty nine years ago, Mr. Rahrig was married to Theresa Gremling in Seneca County.
Surviving are 7 children, six sons, Frank

Rahrig, Grafton; Nicholas Rahrig, New Reigel;
John Rahrig, Upper Sandusky; Peter Rahrig,
Cleveland; Jacob Rahrig, Landeck; Joseph
Rahrig, Huron, Oh.; and one daughter, Mrs. John
Ardner, Paulding. The deceased is also survived
by one brother Michael Rahrig of Landeck, and
one sister, Mrs. Nicholas Kill, of Lima.
Mr. Rahrig was a devout member of the
Catholic Church. The body will be brought
to Delphos over the Pennsylvania Thursday
morning, and taken to the home of Jacob
Rahrig, near Landeck. Funeral services will be
held Friday morning.
Strange Sight in Delphos Sky

Delphosians who rose at 5 oclock Monday
morning or who were called from the beds
by friends, saw a strange phenomenon in the
western sky. Instead of the usual break of
dawn, the air bore a strange, yellowish appearance, such as might be caused by the fumes
from a sulpher fire. No rain was visible, but on
the western horizon appeared two of the most
beautiful rainbows Delphosians have ever
seen. One was directly above the over.
The strangest part of the whole affair
was the center of the double rainbow, there
appeared a huge vari-colored cross. This also
became of the double variety. It was not
exactly the reproduction of a Holy Cross,
but more of and X being tilted to one side.
Superstitious persons began to have all sorts
of beliefs and many did not return to their beds
after witnessing the unusual sight.
Second Street Gets Best Lighting

As the result of an agreement between
the Ohio Electric Railway Co. (traction line)
and City of Delphos, which council decided
should e signed by the municipality, Second
Street will be the best illuminated thoroughfare in the city. The company will install five,
60-watt tungsten clusters at each street intersection, giving a total of 300 candle-power at
each corner. The three arc lights now located
at Second and Pierce, Second and Douglass,
and Second and Maple, will be removed. The
inadequate illumination along Second Street
has been a bone of contention for some time.
Novel Rabbit Catcher

Crabs are put to a curious use on certain parts of the Devonshire foreshore. They
are used to catch rabbits. Having located a
promising burrow, the snarer takes a crab
and affixes a short length of lighted candle to
the back of the shell. The behavior of a crab
which finds itself in a narrow enclosure is well
known. It begins to run. It therefore stars away
up the burrow at top rate and presently the
rabbit is horrified at the sight of jog trotting
flame coming to his sanctuary. Off he goes for
eh other exit, only to find himself, when he
emerges in a trap. - London Spectator.

10 Years Ago 2006
Twenty-two students and seven
adults from Fort Jennings, St. Johns
and Jefferson took a marine biology
trip this summer to the Bahamas. The
group spent eight days on the island
studying biology, geology, botany and
geography through a program run by
International Field Studies. Jefferson
teacher Jeff Rex took his sixth trip
this year.
The Delphos Eagles Auxiliary 471
met in regular session with 33 members in attendance. New members
Shannon Moreo and Laurie Seibert
were initiated. Becky Auers name
was drawn for the attendance award.
Three months attendance went to
Helen Clementz. Hot seat winners
were Sue Radabaugh, Eileen Berry
and Ann Baldauf. Fifty-fifty winners were Bernice Hassenkamp, Lois
Osting and Helen Bonifas.
It may not have been the typical
Davis vs Goliath story but the St.
Johns-Worthington Kilbourne contest
Friday night at Ron Hopper Memorial
Stadium was a division matchup. It
didnt look good for the visiting Blue
Jays when they turned the ball over
early in the third quarter trailing 12-7.
The defense came up with a big stoop
and the offense took over in rolling to
a 28-12 season opening victory over
the Wolves.
25 Years Ago 1991
Navy chaplain Capt. Thomas W.
Kuhn, has been given a new assignment effective Sept. 13. He will be
assigned as command chaplain, Naval
Station, San Diego. Rev. Kuhn is a
native of Tiffin. Prior to his entry into
the U.S. Navy chaplaincy he served as
principal of St. Johns High School and
associate pastor at St. Johns Parish.
Delphos Bass Club held its annual night tournament on Lake James,
Indiana. Winners were Ted Carder,
third place with six fish weighing 9
pounds 2 ounces, Dale Schleeter, second place with six fish weighing 10
pounds 9 ounces and the biggest bass
of 4 pounds 4 ounces, and Ron Moreo,
first place with six fish weighing 14
pounds 5 ounces.
The Putnam County Youth Soccer
League has announced raffle winners
from the Soccer Sunday raffle held in
Ottoville. Top winner was Dale Davis,
Dupont, $100. Other winners were
Brian Moorman, Spencerville, $50;

Commerce are planning the parade
for Delphos 24th Canal Days. This
years parade will feature eight bands
and many floats, according to parade
chairman, Mel Westrich. Also featured are antique cars, fire equipment,
clowns, marching units, antique agricultural equipment, and horses.

4:30 p.m. Friday in the Eagles clubroom. Plans were made at Mondays

50 Years Ago 1966
The safest thing to say about
Delphos Soya Products Company is
that it is definitely there. Some sixty
people who work there, and the people who live nearby, are very aware
of its existence. Farmers within fifty
miles, and any motorists approaching
Delphos, know of it the former as
a market. Floyd F. Reigel formed the
Delphos Grain and Milling Company
in 1944.
Mrs. Ray Brandyberry was hostess to the Tau Chapter, Alpha Delta
Omega National Sorority, for a cookout at her home on South Main Street.
The get-together was in the form of
a going-away party honoring Mrs.
Calvin Fox, who will be moving to
Ohio City in the near future. Mrs. Fox
was presented a lovely gift from the
chapter.
Edna Jane Nolte of Delphos, state
regent of the Catholic Daughters

of America, will present the Most
Reverend George J. Rehring, Bishop
of Toledo, with a check from the State
Court Youth Fund in the amount of
$2,500 Aug. 28 in Ottawa. The check
which Nolte will present is a yearly
project of the C. D. of A. in Ohio and
will be used by him to aid seminarians.
With an impressive seasonal
league record of 13 wins and only
one loss, the winning team was presented a trophy. Team members are:

The Delphos Jaycees reported that
their second annual Chicken Barbeque
held Sunday afternoon at the city recreation field was a success. The event
is staged to provide funds for the civic
groups Youth Welfare fund. In the preBar-B-Que activities the Spencerville
Pony Leaguers defeated the Delphos
Pony League team, 10-8 in the first of
two exhibition ball games. The Sons
Bar and Harolds Bar nines presented
a blooperball game for the second
exhibition event.
The Delphos City baseball team
continues in first place in the West
Central Baseball League although

they lost to fourth place Fort Jennings
on Sunday, 7 to 6. In the pitchers
battle, Keith Ayers gave up nine hits
to the Putnam County nine, just one
more than the number secured by the
Delphos sluggers off Menke.
75 Years Ago 1941
Mona Recker has returned from
Nahma, Michigan, where she attended
the Nahma Vacation School situated
near the Hiawatha National Forest.
Persons interested in art, photography
or writing attend the school. Present at
the school this summer were nationally known personages. During the
past year, Mrs. Recker has had seven
poems published.
Mrs. Cloid Berry entertained the
members of the Happy Twelve Club
and two guests, Mrs. Syl. Kraft and
Mrs. James Dillon, at her home on
North Main Street Tuesday evening.
Mrs. Leander Best was high in bunco,
Mrs. Edward Dickman, second, and
Mrs. Joseph Wieging, low. The evening was concluded with a luncheon
served at the Beckman Hotel.
The Capitol Theatre softball team
was eliminated in the Paulding tournament Tuesday night when Convoy
edged them out by a score of 2 to 1.
Alger, pitching for Convoy, allowed
but two hits. Phil Hall collected a
double and Max Mericle singled. Bill
Briggs hurled for the Capitol team.

Adding
another candle
As another Allen County Fair winds
down and Van Wert County is poised to
start, Ill celebrate another birthday.
Im not going to say, Oh, its just
another day, like my brother-in-law
or I dont celebrate birthdays, like
someone else I know. I like having a
birthday. People treat you a little more
special, they sing to you and theres
cake. Perhaps theres even a present or
two. Whats not to like?
While my comrade at the Times
Bulletin enjoys her ice cream cake on
her big day, I want chocolate cake with
chocolate icing and perhaps we can have
smores later? Its a nice night for a fire.
You get my theme?
I also like going out to eat. Theres no
dishes and someone else cleans up the
table, too. How cool is that?
This year is a big one. Im rolling
a few other life achievements into this
one. My husband and I went out on our
first date on Aug. 30, 1996. Well also
celebrate nine years of marriage on Sept.
7 just around the corner. We also
have a special event planned. So while
I mark the big 51, Ill be thinking about
those things and enjoying them, too.

Im not going to take an assessment

of life and wonder where Id be if Id
done this or that. Nope, not gonna do
it. While no job is perfect, I still enjoy
what I do. I get to talk to some really
cool people. When they say everyone
has a story, its true. You may have to
dig a little but theres something special
and unique about every one of us. I have
numerous tales, some tall, some small
and a few that will never be repeated.
Im not going to have some midlife
crisis and change my hair or get a fancy
car and clothes. Im just going to stay
me and enjoy my life, my family and
everything that comes with it.
I have a few items on the health list
to check off. I slid right through the Big
5-0 and didnt take care of that one little
test everyone should get the colonoscopy. Why mention this, you ask.
Because its important. Colon cancer
runs in my family and its one of the most
treatable cancers if caught early enough.
Just git er done!
I also need to have another checkup
done we women are all familiar with
a mammogram. Does anyone else find
themselves in awe of how thin things
can get? I mean, really!

So while it wont all be fun and
games, Im planning on having another
great year.
While thinking about my big day, I
Googled the Top 10 Ways to Celebrate
a Birthday and heres what I found:
1. Skip school or work. (I have been
fortunate enough to be able do this
for the most part.)
2. Gamble. (Not my thing.)
3. Get yourself a nice gift. (Dont
really buy myself too much. Im low
maintenance.)
4. Eat a lot. (Yes. Oh, yes.)
5. Stay up for 24 hours. (Not this girl.
I like my sleep even though Ive noticed
lately that I dont SLEEP as much.)
6. Write a letter to your future self.
(This could be interesting.)
7. Try something new and adventurous. (How adventurous? Im a scaredy
cat!)
8. Make a bucket list. (Already started one.)
9. Film yourself the entire day. (Um,
no. Just no. No one should do this!)
10. Not something that can be mentioned here.
What is it about a cardboard box? How is it that,

once the appliance or whatever had to be wedged inside
four pulped and corrugated
walls is removed, the container begs to be explored?
When I was five or so, my
parents bought a dishwasher
when such a thing was the
latest must-have convenience.
The thing was a lemon, and
less convenient for my schoolteacher folks than washing
dishes the old-fashioned way.

But the box was a thing of
beauty. I dont remember how
many forts and rocket ships it was until the cat used it as a
litter box and I ran crying to my mom, but Im sure it was pure
magic. Much to my joy, Mom and Dad bought a storage cabinet a year later. The brown container was twice as tall as me.
It featured very little sitting room at the base when upright, but
since it was, after all, a tower of stone surrounded by a moat,
upright it stayed. There was enough space for me and my dog,
so all was as it should be.
A box neednt be enormous for adventure. We have photos
of our child, who on her second birthday, wore a box on her
head during most of her birthday party. The present inside
the box was a Playschool tape recorder with Crayola-colored
keys for little fingers to operate. For years, she appreciated the
music and stories it could play. On the day she unwrapped it,
however, the box with its rigid plastic display window was a
space helmet.
Last week, we bought a new stove, one with burners that
actually work and an oven that heats to a prescribed temperature. We are happy to be able to bake, heat the tea kettle and fry
an egg all at the same time. Our cat, on the other hand, became
a panther who glowered from the deep recesses of the cardboard cave that held the stove. He ventured into the sunshine
today, and the goats are now beating his cave to a pulp just off
the front porch.

This reminds me of the story
I heard recently about the John
North family and their dog, Rusty.
They are an average family, John
and his wife, Jane, have a son and
a daughter.
As the kids got to be five and
seven years of age, John thought
it was important to get the family
a dog to play with and provide
companionship.
One day John went out and
bought an adorable puppy. It was
an instant hit with the whole family as everyone chipped in to care
for it. That little puppy became a
loved part of the North family.
As the puppy grew, it became
apparent that the dog couldnt
learn the most basic commands or
tricks. In fact, Rusty refused to be
housebroken. Being cute can only
take a beloved pet so far.

They figured the dog needed
professional help. They spent hundreds of dollars to send the dog to
an obedience school. After about
six weeks, the dog was returned
to them.
The trainer was obviously disappointed because nothing he tried
seemed to work with Rusty. He
took John aside and told him he
believed the dog was simply mentally challenged. Its not uncommon, he told John, it just happens.
John was crushed. He didnt
know how to break the news to
his family. The kids loved Rusty,
but they couldnt keep a dog that
could not be trained. John decided
to take the dog to an animal shelter
across town.
That night he explained to the
kids that the dog had been hit by
a car and had died. Everyone was
very sad. Jane sensed a flaw in
Johns story, but didnt want to
say anything about it in front of
the kids.
Seeing how hurt everyone was,
Jane decided the best thing to do
would be to find another dog to
replace Rusty. When she got time,
she drove across town and stopped
as an animal shelter.
As she looked through the kennel, a dog approached her, wagged
his tail and stole her heart. The dog
even looked just like Rusty, she
thought. She had to have it, she
told the shelter manager.
That evening she introduced the
new dog to the family. Imagine
Johns surprise when Rusty came
bounding into the rooma dog
that looked identical to the one he
had told them was dead.

A good Vilas County Republican
tells me his churchs lawyer came
back from the Democratic State
Convention in July so full of the
true religion that they let him pass
the collection plate on Sunday
morning.
I had never heard of a liberal
lawyer being allowed to take up
the collection, so I expressed some
doubt to my conservative friend.
No, its true, he said. We
made him hold the plate in one
hand and a live fly closed in his
fist in the other hand. When he
turns in the plate he has to still
have the fly in his other hand.

Now all my troubles are behind
me, she sighs.

Millions of young people are
heading back to school this week
and Amy Beth Gardner used the
opportunity to tell about the talk
she had with her middle school
daughter. Ed Johnston thought the
message was important enough to
pass along. Gardner tells the story
this way.
As Breonna prepares to go to
school we decorated her locker,
bought new uniforms and even
surprised her with a new backpack. Tonight, just before bed, we
did another pre-middle school task
that is far more important than the
others. I gave her a tube of toothpaste and asked her to squirt it out
onto a plate.
When she finished, I calmly
asked her to put all the toothpaste back in the tube. She began
exclaiming things like But I
cant! and It wont be like it was
before! I quietly waited for her to
finish then said the following:
You will remember this plate
of toothpaste for the rest of your

life. Your words have the power
of life or death. As you go into
middle school, you are about to see
just how much weight your words
carry. You are going to have the
opportunity to use your words to
hurt, demean, slander and wound
others.
You are also going to have
the opportunity to use your words
to heal, encourage, inspire and
love others. You will occasionally
make the wrong choice; I can think
of three times this week I have
used my own words carelessly and
caused harm. Just like this toothpaste, once the words leave your
mouth, you cant take them back.
Use your words carefully,
Breonna. When others are misusing their words, guard your words.
Make the choice every morning
that life-giving words will come
out of your mouth. Decide tonight
that you are going to be a life-giver
in middle school.

Hope across Ohio

For the last three years I have worked on
legislation to transform the federal governments response to the heroin and opioid addiction epidemic that is devastating too many Ohio
communities. The legislation is called CARA,
the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery
Act.
After a big bipartisan vote in the Senate and
the House, CARA was signed into law in July.
It represents a change in the way we prevent,
treat, and help people recover from addiction.
It ramps up prevention and education efforts
in the face of this epidemic, treats addiction
like a diseaserequiring treatmentand is
the first federal law to emphasize the need
for longer term recovery, which substantially
increases the chances of success. It provides
law enforcement and other first responders
with the resources and training they need on
the front lines. CARA directs hundreds of millions of dollars in new resources toward those
efforts every year, helping every community
across Ohio. As it is implemented, it will help
save lives.
In the past month alone, I have visited a
dozen cities in Ohio to see the impact of the
opioid addiction epidemic. I have heard consistently from prosecutors, police chiefs and
county sheriffs that the epidemic is responsible
for most of the crime in our neighborhoods.
Firefighters have told me they make more
runs to administer the miracle drug, Narcan,

to reverse the effects of an overdose than they
do fire runs. And, sadly, drug overdoses have
now surpassed car accidents as the number one
cause of death in Ohio.
During these visits, I have met with hundreds of people whose addictions have taken
their lives off track, torn their families apart,
separated them from work and generally prevented them from reaching their potential in
life. The stories are heartbreaking.
But I have also seen a lot of good reasons
for hope.
Many of those who are struggling have
made the decision to the throw off the grip of
addiction by seeking treatment and getting into
longer term recovery. And so many compassionate people in our communities are reaching
out to helpoften in new and innovative ways.
In Dayton, I visited Ohios first Federal
Veterans court, and one of the first in the country, and met with graduates who were helped
not only with their addiction but also with jobs
skills and employment and a fresh start on
life. I heard from Chris, a proud graduate of
the program who served time in prison and is
in recovery. Thanks to the program, hes been
sober for several years and has his own successful business that employs others who have
served time.
In Lakewood, I toured the impressive
Woodrow Project Home for Women, where
women who are in long-term recovery from
addiction can live in a supportive and safe
environment. I met a young woman named

Avril, who suffers from an addiction to prescription painkillers and other drugs. With help
from the staff and with the support from her
peers, she has been sober for a year, is starting
college, and hopes to someday work in human
resources so that she can help people get the
right jobs for them and live out their potential
to the fullest.
At the Veterans Treatment Center at
Youngstown State University, I met Bill, an
Army veteran who used to self-medicate with
drugs and alcohol and who eventually became
addicted. When he was facing jail time, a
veterans treatment court offered him a second
chance. Bill just graduated from the program
in June, and now he is giving back and helping
others get a second chance, too.
In Lancaster, I toured the Pearl House and
Recovery Center. I met Dustin, who struggles
with an addiction to oxycodone and heroin. He
lost his sister to an opiate overdose, and now
she is his inspiration to do whatever it takes to
beat his own addiction. Hes fighting hard and,
thanks to the Pearl House, hes winning.
In Logan, I visited the Hocking County
Municipal Vivitrol Drug Court, where Judge
Fred Moses uses compassion and accountability to turn peoples lives around who are in
the criminal justice system because of heroin
or prescription drug addiction. Judge Moses
got reports from those in the program and his
treatment team on their progress or failure. We
heard testimony from people at various stages
on the road to recovery and I had a chance to

ask those in the program about what worked
and what didnt. Some were struggling not following the rules, and they faced consequences.
One man was sent back to prison, others to
community service. Most were succeeding and
received applause and encouragement from the
dozens of people in the courtroom.
And in Chillicothe, I visited the Adena
Womens Pregnancy Center and met with pregnant women and new moms who suffer from
addictionwomen like Elizabeth, who developed an addiction after she was prescribed
morphine following surgery to remove her
appendix. I also met Connie, who became
addicted to prescription painkillers after breaking her arm. Both women are now sober and
successful thanks to the doctors, counselors,
and volunteers at Adena.
In Columbus, I visited the Hope Over Heroin
event led by pastors from Ohio and Kentucky.
Even with another day to go, they had already
helped a number of people get into treatment.
These visits showed me once again that
there is hope for those who struggle with
addiction. While the toll of this opioid addiction
epidemic has been getting worse, not better,
these success stories show how the right kind
of treatment and recovery can work.
I am encouraged by the positive examples
I see in Ohio, and pleased that our new legislation, CARA, will support these successful
programs and help write more of these Ohio
success stories.

Jean Baptiste Adrian, twin of Joseph Desire, was born 16
March 1830 and died 25 March 1830.

Marie Madeleine (Sosson) Backes died 19 April 1845.
Between April 1845 and 1850 Andre Auguste Backes came to
Seneca County, Ohio where he died 6 November 1858 and was
buried in St. Nicholas Cemetery, Frenchtown, Seneca County,
Ohio.
Jean Joseph Backes was born 8 November 1813 in Vance,
Province of Luxembourg, Belgium to Andre Auguste Backes
(30 June 1786 - 6 November 1858) and Maria Magdalenae
Sosson (1789-1845).
In 1837 Joseph was a Cannonier in the 3rd Regiment of
Artillery.
On 31 July 1839 in Vance, Province of Luxembourg,
Belgium, Joseph was married to Catherine Joseph Dabfontaine,
born 4 Feb. 1813 to Henri Joseph (22 March 1784 - 10 August
1852) and Marie Margueritte (Jacob) DLafontaine (31 May
1779 - 12 February 1840). After six children were born,
Catherine Joseph (Dabfontaine) Backes died on 12 May 1853.
Seven months later, Joseph Backes and his children emigrated, arriving in New York aboard the Samuel Badger, on 5
December 1853.
The family journeyed to Seneca County, Ohio where
Josephs younger brother Nicolas Joseph had settled in 1839,
and father, Andre Auguste Bakies, had journeyed to after April

1845. Here, Joseph married Suzanne (Bouquet) Nepper, born
1818, daughter of Dominque (7 January 1788-26 January 1820)
and Angelique (Schung) Bouquet (7 July 1791-11 August 1861
New Riegel, Seneca, Ohio) on 11 April 1856 Seneca County,
Ohio and they had two children.
Children born to Joseph and Catherine Joseph (Dabfontaine)
Backes were:
Joseph Augustin born 14 April 1836 died ?.
Jean Nicolas born 19 May 1840 and died ?.
Victor Pierre Louis born 9 February 1842, died ?.
Jean Baptiste Victor was born 5 February 1845 and died 9
February 1925 in Allen County, Ohio.
Marie Josephine born 27 February 1848 and died 24 April

Joseph Backes died 13 November 1888 in New Riegel,
Seneca County, Ohio.
Jean-Baptiste Victor Backes was born 5 February 1845
in Vance, Province of Luxembourg, Belgium, to Joseph and
Catherine Joseph (Dabfontaine) Backes. Victor was married
on 12 October 1869 in Seneca County, Ohio, to Mary Borer,
born 8 December 1848 in New Riegel, daughter of George
J. Borer (1801 in Switzerland 25 September 1870 in Big
Spring, Seneca County, Ohio) and Rosalia (Rosa) ?(1811
in Switzerland - 9 April 1868 in Big Spring, Seneca County,
Ohio).
Children born to Victor and Mary were:
Susanna born 21 July 1870 and died at age 1 day on 22 July
1870.
Katherine was born 16 October 1872 and married on 27
Tornado
At 6:43 p.m., the storm began to recycle
again with a supercell storm spinning up
just north of the Van Wert City limits. From
a large rotating wall cloud came a new and
now third tornado touching down just east of
US 224 between Giffen and Convoy roads
and remained on the ground for a half-mile.
As this was occurring, another storm cell
was spinning up and put forth a tornado on
the ground at Feasby Wisener Road west
of Middle Point-Wetzel Road. This tornado,
which was a quarter mile wide, continued
northeast on the ground for two miles lifting
at the Van Wert/Paulding County Line Road
just west of the Van Wert Putnam County Line
Road. At 7:19 p.m., the National Weather
Service cancelled the tornado warning for Van
Wert County.
Late Wednesday evening, the Van Wert
Chapter of the American Red Cross sent their
assessment teams across the county looking
for damage and checking to make sure residents were safe. The teams were again out
November 1890 in St. Johns Church, Delphos, Allen, Ohio

to William Kelbley. Katherine (Backus) Kelbley died 19 July
1943.
Peter born 30 May 1874 and married after 1910 Mae
(Wildrick) Gould (18731943). Peter died 25 June 1942.
Mary Elizabeth born 23 October 1876 and married on 16
November 1899 in Allen County, Ohio, Isaac Madison Crider
(18761963) Mary Elizabeth (Backus) Crider died 1 August
1946.
Jacob L. was born 29 August 1878 and married 25 April
1911 Anna Mary Kroeger (18851943), daughter of Carl and
Anna Kroeger. Jacob died 3 September 1953.
Adam H. born 22 May 1883 and was married to Viola
Carder (1887-1964) on 28 November 1907 in Allen County,
Ohio. Adam died 2 January 1950.
George Albert was born 22 June 1886 died 2 July 1951.
Jean-Baptiste Victor Backes died 9 February 1925 in Allen
County, Ohio, age at death: 80 years old and Mary (Borer)
Backes died 25 August 1933 in Marion Township, Allen
County, Ohio. Victor and Mary are buried in Section B in the
St. John Cemetery, Delphos, Allen County, Ohio.

barns but no location had significant losses.
Luckily, the tornadoes were over a lot
of rural cropland and spared many homes,
McCoy said.
The Van Wert County Commissioners
issued an Emergency Declaration on Thursday.
The EMA Director wishes to thank the
National Weather Service for their expedient warnings in a quickly developing severe
weather event. McCoy also commends the
dedicated services of local law enforcement,
fire departments and amateur radio spotters
for their invaluable reports of the tornadoes
to relay to the public. And also he commends
the businesses and the public for taking quick
action to protect lives in this dangerous situation.
Van Wert County remains weather aware
as we have seen our share of storms with
31 tornadoes now hitting Van Wert County
since 1990 when I became director, McCoy
added.

That is my biggest
accomplishment this year at
the fair, the older brother
said with a smile. Thats
where you see all the hard
work pay off.
The work Troy is talking
about includes getting up
every morning and feeding
and watering his pigs, washing them every day and rinsing them two or three times
a day to keep their hair looking soft, and walking them
every day to build up their
endurance for the show ring.
This happens every day
without fail.
I was worried because
my pig was in the show ring
a long time; she was tired,
he said. When it got down
to me and my little sister,
Halle, both our pigs were
tired.
Troy also won both his
swine drives on Monday
and was the Crossbreed
Champion. On Tuesday,
he took Reserve Farrow to
Finish.
She was a pretty pig
as a baby, the St. Johns
junior said of his Farrow
to Finish entry. She was
one of the younger pigs and
only weighed about 240245 pounds when we got to
the fair. Most of them are
around 265-270. She was a
little greener but had all the
right parts and pieces and
put everything together.

sister
swooped in for the Champion
banner and trophy this time.
Winning Farrow to
Finish felt good, Halle
said. Troy and I were the
only ones left in the ring;
that was weird. The judge
was a girl; that was actually
cool. Ive never had a girl
judge before.
Sister Hannah is no
slacker. She also won Third
Overall in Farrow to Finish
giving the family another
sweep in the top three spots
and Fourth Overall in
Showman of Showmen.
I enjoy showing my
hogs at the fair, she said.
Its a family thing. My dad
showed hogs since he was
little and he introduced it to
us and we fell in loved with
it and have been doing it
ever since.
Scott likes the values
raising hogs teaches his
children.
Working with their animals teaches them so much,
he said. The learn commitment and work ethic and
it builds responsibility and
they make friendships that
last a time.
While showing off their
hard work is the main reason
the Elwers are at the fair,
they also enjoy hanging out
with friends that they only
see at the fair.
I like to hang out with
people I dont get to talk
to on a regular basis, Troy
said.
For Hannah, its a chance
to share what she did over
the summer.
The best part is that I get
to introduce all my friends
to my pigs and show them
what Ive been working on,
the St. Johns freshman said.
Oh, and the fair food!
For the youngest Elwer,
just being at the fair is fun.
I like hanging out with
people and walking the
Midway, she said. We also
go back to the camper and
play games.
For Scott and his wife
Chrissy, a teacher at St.
Johns, the fair is family
time.
This is our vacation
the county fair and the state
fair, he said. A lot of people go other places but this
is what we do.
With the start of school
less than a week away, the
three Elwer children were
running to and from the fairgrounds for various practices. Troy is on the Blue
Jay football team and basketball and baseball fill out
the rest of the year. He is
also vice president of the
Delphos FFA and a member
of the Delphos Livestock
4-H Club. Hannah is the secretary of Delphos Livestock
and is currently playing volleyball and will try out for
basketball cheerleading. She
starts her career in the FFA
on Tuesday. Halle will be in
the seventh grade and is in
her fourth year with Delphos
Livestock. She also plays
volleyball and cheers.
VFW officers teach flag etiquette

Delphos City School Superintendent Kevin Wolfe was pleased

the project was started, too.
We broke ground and thats exciting, Wolfe said. They students are going to be watching this go up and it will be exciting
for them as well.
Millers bids came in at $508,954, the lowest of seven
received, including Alexander and Bebout, Charles Construction,
HA Construction, Kuhlman Builders, Mullenberry Construction
and Westerheide Construction.
Wolfe said the architects are waiting for the final approval on
the project from the state but it is a formality.
We may have to make an adjustment here or there but the
architects know what they are doing and what guidelines they
have to follow, he said.
Garmann-Miller Architects/Engineers in Minster is handling
that end of the project.
The 4,300-square-foot building will include four spaces:
Audio Visual Room
Module Career Pod area tooled for a career-based learning
activity to mimic job-shadowing experiences
A lecture area with seating
Future career maker space to explore STEM, coding, green
energy, etc.
There will also be two restrooms.
Millers bid came in below the projected cost. Jefferson High
School teacher Missy McClurg, who wrote and received the
$999,785 Straight A Grant from the state, was ecstatic the bids
came in under her proposed budget.
We adjusted some things from the architects original plans
and we decided to concentrate on the inside of the center rather
than how it will look on the outside, so we were able to come in
$25,000 under budget, McClurg said. We were so far under
budget we were able to add in some things like wainscoting brick
on the outside to add a little bit of the fanciness back. Were also
going to have some surprises in the maker-space area students
arent expecting so that will be exciting.
Another adjustment to the bid requests was moving the completion date from mid-December to Feb. 17.
That saved us $7,500 alone, McClurg said.
The center will also be self-sufficient with a solar panel installation on the existing school building to provide power for the
center and more. County Electric from Ottawa will install the
solar-panel system for $137,950.
The center will be a field trip destination for students in grades
7-12 for career exploration at all education levels from high
school diploma to doctorate level based on the 45 jobs most in
demand in Ohio. For example: in the bio-medical pod, a student
will be able to design a prosthetic and have a finished product by
using a 3D printer.
Seven other area schools will participate in the project, including Allen East, Apollo Career Center, Crestview, Elida, Fort
Jennings, Lincolnview and Pandora.
The construction of the center will not use any taxpayers dollars. The entire project is paid for through the Straight A Grant.

Betsy said. She started with pigs, then chickens, then dairy feeders and now the dairy

Calvelage was excited about her win.
I won, she said. It was fun!
She found success in the show ring with the
help of her sister, Haley, a former 4-H member,
her father, Jim, and friends and neighbors.
Her sister and dad do a lot, Betsy said.

normal an environment as possible and it lets

Ally also helps care for the familys two
dogs, Callie, a Boxer/Lab mix, and Max, a
German Shepherd. She enjoys playing baseball and attending Camp Robin Rogers in the
summer.
