Q1.
Having worked at Tata Consultancy Services as an Assistant Software Engineer
for the past 18 months, I believe I have a good starting experience to be a part
of IT Committee.
After graduating from SIES College, Mumbai, I joined TCS as an ASE Trainee. The
first three months were training, where I was taught UNIX, C++ and Oracle and I
enjoyed learning them. However, it was very rigorous and after about two weeks
of classes, we were expected to do a mini project. It was fun and it was enjoyable
to create something new and solve a problem. Also, working at TCS left a lasting
impression of how a project is imagined, developed and executed.
Working at IT sector gave me lots of time to work with computers and it was fun
trying out various utilities and experimenting with them. Also, working at TCS let
me meet with various likeminded people and they taught me more than what the
training did. Working with UNIX was especially interesting as the server of the
application I worked at in TCS ran on UNIX and we had to learn how to use short
cuts and functions like sudo.
It would be very enjoyable to meet similar people here and learn more about
things work and also explore the various tools and softwares.
It would be interesting to work at IT Committee as I believe I can put to use my
experience I gained working at TCS and at the same time, learn from both my
peers and seniors.
Q2.
IT Committee is responsible for the tech in our high-tech campus. They take care
of everything, from Network Connectivity to the Interactive Whiteboard in our
classrooms.
Connectivity:
IT Committees first responsibility is providing the entire campus with Internet
Connectivity. It does this by two ways:
1. Providing LAN connectivity to every room.
2. Providing Wi-Fi access throughout the campus.
Softwares:
IT Committee is also responsible for providing genuine and licensed version of
various softwares such as Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Excel, SPSS, Antivirus
etc. This reduces piracy and encourages use of genuine software.
High-tech Classrooms:
IT Committee also looks after the IT infrastructure provided in each room. This
includes interactive whiteboard, Video conferencing facilities, etc.
Websites:

They are responsible for ensuring that colleges both external and internal
websites are up and that accessible to all, as per their privileges. They are also
responsible, I presume, for updating the colleges website.
Campus ERP:
They are also responsible for the automation of college using Oracle PeopleSoft
ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning). This reduces the effort spend on manually
updating everything and also makes the information accessible to everyone with
necessary privileges.
Glitches:
They are also responsible for ensuring that the system works perfectly without
any glitches and resolve any glitches, if found, as soon as possible.
Q3.
A}
Dear PGP14 and PGP15,
As you all know, for the past several weeks, we have been facing acute
problems in our internet connectivity. It has been found that this is due to use of
DHCP softwares such as Connectify. Softwares such as this consume extra
network bandwidth which has severely reduced the bandwidth available to other
users.
Secondly, usage of IDM (Internet Download Manager) also results in slower speed
as it tries to maximise the individual download speed.
Thirdly, large number of malware infected systems are flooding the network with
large amounts of junk data, which is again drastically reducing the speed.
This is a very serious issue and we are planning to take strict action against the
offenders. All the participants are required to install antivirus and deep scan
the entire machine. Also, refrain from using softwares such as IDM and
Connectify as they are causing problems for entire institute.
All participants have time till 6th August EOD. Any who hasnt taken the
measures may have their internet access revoked and an application may have
to be written to the admission office for the same.

IT Committee

Dear Administration,
Several participants of both PGP 14 and PGP15 have been approaching us
from the past few days regarding issues with their systems. Though the issues

they were facing were minor in nature, many faced problem as they did not have
an IT background. Also, certain problems were regarding the connectivity to
internet.
Because of this, many participants faced troubles for several days and even the
faculty spoke to us regarding the same, as participants were unable to complete
the given assignments on time.
While we do understand that procedures were laid to give structure to the
process and are necessary, it may be time to update the same and make the
process easier so that the participants do not face any problems, whatsoever.
After all, IT Team is there to make the life simpler, not tougher.

Regards,
IT Committee
