Sunday, August 28, 2016 - Fifteenth Sunday After Pentecost.

For every Sunday of the year, the official

United Church of Christ calendar lists
recommended Scripture readings. On
Sunday, August 28th they include
Luke 14:1 and 7-14.
Jesus accepts an invitation to a dinner
party.
His arrival raises some
eyebrows. He is in the home of a
Pharisee, who planned his feast as a
way of trapping Jesus. The Savior uses
this as a teaching moment!
1

One Sabbath day Jesus went to eat dinner in the home of a leader of the Pharisees, and
the people were watching him closely.
7

When Jesus noticed that all who had come to the dinner were trying to sit in the seats of
honor near the head of the table, he gave them this advice: 8 When you are invited to a
wedding feast, dont sit in the seat of honor. What if someone who is more distinguished
than you has also been invited? 9 The host will come and say, Give this person your
seat. Then you will be embarrassed, and you will have to take whatever seat is left at the
foot of the table!
10

Instead, take the lowest place at the foot of the table. Then when your host sees you,
he will come and say, Friend, we have a better place for you! Then you will be honored in
front of all the other guests. 11 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those
who humble themselves will be exalted.
12

Then he turned to his host. When you put on a luncheon or a banquet, he said, dont
invite your friends, brothers, relatives, and rich neighbors. For they will invite you back,
and that will be your only reward. 13 Instead, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and
the blind.14 Then at the resurrection of the righteous, God will reward you for inviting
those who could not repay you.

Paraments and altar linens remain GREEN. Green symbolizes the

renewal of vegetation and generally of living things and the promise of
new life.
Green, in a sense, is a "neutral color," used when more festive or more
somber color is not appointed.

A Peek at the Sunday Sermon

We are a Congregational Church. We are conservative in our worship - and we follow
our bulletin religiously. We enjoy the traditions and the rituals of worship. This includes
the singing of the Doxology after receiving the offering.
Ill have something to say about the significance of this weekly observance and how it
applies to our Christian walk.
The Sunday Sermon is titled: We Are
People of the Doxology.
Ill be sharing
from Ephesians 1:3-14.
I believe God is challenging us to be more
than singers of the Doxology. We are called
to be people of the Doxology!
The SERMON NOTES bulletin insert will have
reprinted our sermon text. As we explore St.
Pauls letter, I think we will be encouraged
with his words of praise.
This is a message that instructs us to speak
well of God and offer praise and blessings to
Him!

Update On Our Parking Lot Pledge Drive

Our
asphalt
replacement
project will begin in midSeptember! This will involve
cutting out damaged asphalt,
laying down new asphalt, and
re-striping
the
parking
spaces.
We
originally
estimated a need to raise
approximately $10,000.00 to
pay for this needed repair!
Special donation envelopes have been mailed. Envelopes are also in
the pews. At this writing, approximately $7,600.00 has been received
in donations! Repairs will be made in late September!
Gifts can be brought to the church on
Sunday and placed in the offering or mailed
to Dearborn Congregational Church, 16350
Rotunda Dr., Dearborn, MI 48120.
A weekly update charting our progress will be published in the Sunday
bulletin and in the monthly church newsletter, as well as reported on a wall
chart in the back of the sanctuary. Please prayerfully consider what you
can give (above your regular support and tithes) to help with our hole-y
challenge and smooth out the lot for the benefit of all!

Adult Bible Fellowship

On Tuesday, September 20, 2016, at
7:00 p.m. Pastor Kren will host an Adult
Bible
Fellowship
at
Dearborn
Congregatioal Church. This will be a
seven (7) week study on the spiritual
journey of the Apostle Peter.
Why Peter? I believe, in many ways, Pete was an every day, kind of person. He was a
fisherman. He knew how to make a living with his hands. He knew what it was like to
work hard, but the results were not always successful.
In other ways, this disciple of Jesus was a unique individual. His personality was often
impulsive, self-assured, and headstrong. These traits allowed him to be a strong leader
in the early years of the Church.
The fact that Jesus chose Peter to be one of the very first disciples, and that he later
became one of the most significant leaders in the Early Church, is a reminder that we
dont have to hold degrees in order to be acceptable to the Lord. We dont have to be
successful in business for the Lord to call us to be partners in ministry. And we dont
have to do and say all the right things to be regarded as His children.
If, on your spiritual journey, you are interested in a Bible study that will be both
informative and practical, why not join the DCC Adult Bible Fellowship? You may bring
your own Bible, note taking is encouraged, and Christian fellowship is mandatory!

No sign-up sheets.
No etched-in-stone commitments.
Absolutely no finals!
Just a relaxing hour of Christian fellowship and Bible study.
