If you know any programs in a bit more details, please fill in the gap to help our new comers
who are/will be seeking the residency jobs in the States. The following list should serve you as a
guide only and every applicant should extensively be doing the research about the program you
are actually applying.
General nuts & bolts
1) Some programs prefer applicants with western experience and/or within 5 or 10 years
of graduation etc: No need to feel despondent if you do not meet above criteria as
majority of IMG posts are filled with appropriate networking. Your duty is to score as
high as you can in your USMLEs.
2) It is quite difficult to find the programs which will give you all following criteria but this is
the order of importance you should be targeting.
a) Categorical job
b) H1B (J visa is still OK)
c) Pre-match
d) Program has in-house sub-specialty fellowship training
e) Exemption for a year if you have UK/Canada experience with postgraduate
diploma.
3) If your immigration status is on VISA (Non-citizen, Non-green card holder) & want to
do sub-specialty, your chance of getting into the Fellowship training is the highest in your
residency program which has in-house fellow training posts.
