Schulte hopes Blue Jay gridders rise to occasion in 2016

DELPHOS The St. Johns football

team has had a lot of success over the last
2-plus decades, amassing six state titles and
a state-record 57game winning streak
along the way.
The last two seasons have been a
struggle to say the
least 4-7 in 2014
and last falls 1-9,
including 1-7 in the
Midwest
Athletic
Conference.
That is why the
Schulte
teams motto for this
campaign Rise
Up might be appropriate as 18th-year
head coach Todd Schulte welcomes back a
boatload of starters and lettermen.
Last year is over and done; I and my
coaching staff have
not mentioned it.
After the way the
season ended last
season, it left a bitter
taste in our mouths
and we wanted to
get back out there,
he began. We also
took a look at how
we were doing
things, particularly
Hellman
the weight room; we
maintained the same
philosophy but worked a different program
and we are as strong physically as weve
been in four or five years. The biggest concern we have is team speed. Weve had a lot
over the years but not this year; we have it in
certain spots but not across the board.

numbers (49 freshman through senior) or
depth weve had but were OK with it; you
change the way you train and practice to get
players ready for longer minutes.
The offense
which averaged 16.8
points per game in
2015 will remain
the same as far as
use of the option
and spreading it out
in utilizing the Pistol formation for the
third year in a row
but Schulte hopes
that he doesnt have
the issues at quarterKreeger
back as last year.
We had to use
three different ones because of injuries; that
is difficult when youre trying to build cohesion and consistency. We just never had
that offensively last year, Schulte said.
We come into the
game wanting to run
the football but we
know we have to be
more balanced; we
still cant just line
it up in the I and
pound people. With
Jake Youngpeter and
his arm, he gives us
options we havent
had in a while with
Reindel
the pass; we have to
use that.
The starter is senior lefty Youngpeter (6-2,
190, senior; 38-for-77 passing, 649 yards, 3
TDs, 5 picks; 63 runs, 211 yards, 3), backed
by Jared Wurst (6-4, 174, sophomore), Troy

Dammeyer looking for more success for Blue Jay volleyball

DELPHOS St. Johns volleyball head

coach Carolyn Dammeyer saw her patience
in building the programs fortunes pay off
last seasons 16-9 mark, including a seventhplace finish in the Midwest Athletic Conference.
She commences her fourth season at the
helm (30-40 at the school) and 31st as a varsity coach overall hoping for more of the
same.
She appears to be well-stocked for just
such a purpose as seven letterwinners are
back to build 2016 around.
Leading the way is fourth-year senior starter Jessica Geise (5-8 middle hitter; 2-time
District 8 and MAC honoree) and fourthyear starting setter Maya Gerker (5-7).
Five others that played key roles on last
years edition of Lady Blue Jays and expected to play even bigger roles in 2016 include
third-year junior Madi Ellis (6-0 middle hitter), third-year junior Ellie Csukker (5-9 setter), senior outside hitter senior Ally Gerberick (5-7), 5-5 senior Jana Hamilton (libero/
defensive specialist) and third-year junior
Kennedy Clarkson (5-2 libero/defensive specialist).
Jessica Geise has had the honors in her
sophomore and junior years and Maya Gerker is a 4-year setter. We expect great things
out of Madi Ellis and Ellie Csukker, Dammeyer said. Ally Gerberick is making great
strides, along with the other outside position
shared by three other players. We expect
great defense by Jana Hamilton and Kennedy
Clarkson.
With the loss of three letterwinners to
graduation: Maddie Buettner (3 varsity letters; middle hitter/blocker), Maddie Pohlman
(3 years; outside hitter) and Olivia Kahny (3
years; outside hitter); Dammeyer has a trio
of replacements ready to go: junior Allie

Smith hopes 13 a lucky number for Lady Jay soccer

DELPHOS Katrina Smiths sophomore campaign as the St. Johns girls soccer coach finished up 5-13-0, 1-5-0 in the
Western Ohio Soccer League.
That followed her inaugural foray of
4-12-2 as Lady Blue Jay coach when she

took over for John Munoz in 2014.
With 13 letterwinners back from their Division III sectional runner-up squad, Smith
hopes that 13 wont be unlucky as her troops
prepare for 2016.
We had more wins last year than in 2014,
so that is something to build on, she noted.

lineup (most players can be put at multiple

We are looking to continue to improve
our record as well as our quality of play. We
have great leadership this year in our seniors
and captains and with them we are continu-
ing to improve our quality of play and we

are looking to improve our record as well,
she added. We are striving to be competitive in conference play as well as non-conference play this season.
The WOSL again looks to be a very competitive conference. We are looking to keep
improving on our conference record. We believe that we have a good chance to make an
impact on the conference this year.
The Lady Blue Jays opened 2016 on
Tuesday, Aug. 23, at Coldwater.

Hellman expects another step in St. Johns harrier development

DELPHOS St. Johns head cross country coach Steve Hellman lost one of the better runners in the programs history after
4-time Regional qualifier Curtis Pohlman
and his personal-record 17:16 graduated in
the spring.
Fortunately for Hellman, entering his seventh year, that was his only departure via
graduation from the boys team.
For the Lady Blue Jays, who finally fielded a full team despite some injuries for
points purposes after two seasons of being
unable to do so, 3-year varsity runner Anna
Mueller (22:41 PR) and 2-year runner Samantha Stevenson (26:36 PR) also used up
their scholastic eligibility.
Back to the senior-laden boys team that
finished 43-103 good for seventh in the
competitive Midwest Athletic Conference

had hoped for but we return a great group

of runners, get all the injured runners back
and they are running injury-free, so it will
be like I got three new runners to add to
the ones that are returning. With a more experienced group, we have bumped up the
miles run this summer and have been running very well. We open the season on Aug.
27 at home (Stadium Park) with 18 schools
coming to town and I think both teams have
a chance to be in the top five teams. From
there, we will be building to the MAC meet,
where we going to shoot to finish in the top
five for both teams. We dont know where
our district is at yet but for the girls team, if
they run as they are capable of doing, they
should have a chance to make it to the Regional. For the boys at districts, it will be a
tough for them to make it but they do have
a chance if they run a race of their career.
As for the MAC this year, on the girls
side, Minster will be the head of the class.
On the boys side, it could be any of four or
five teams that could win the team title.

the start of the season,
it will all be about them
starting their own tradition that we started last
year. It had been since
1998 since we have
added a trophy to the trophy case and last
year, the girls team added two and hope to
increase that number even more this year.

injuries that we have not had in the past that
kept us from having as much success that I

Stober returns lucky 7/11 for Jefferson girls soccer

DELPHOS Josiah Stober has slowly

but surely built the Jefferson girls soccer program in his previous three seasons, erecting a
19-25-6 mark.
His efforts paid off big-time in 2015 as his
fourth team finished 13-1-4, good for second
in the Northwest Conference, and ended the
most successful season in program history in
the Division III District semifinals.
Though there are some important cogs
missing from that group graduated starters
Logan Hamilton (4 years; midfielder), Alexa
Marlowe (4 years; backer/midfielder), Jessica Pimpas (2 years; goalkeeper) and Brandy

White (4 years; backer) he has seven returning starters and four other letterwinners
back for a new season.
This crew of Lady Wildcats will be headlined by fourth-year senior midfielder Arianna Knebel, fourth-year senior Makaya Dunning (backer/midfielder), fourth-year senior

Returning starter Macy Wallace (5-6
junior outside hitter; injury) and varsity
newcomer Tristine Lehmkuhle (5-6 junior
outside hitter; accident) are coming into the
season recovering from injuries, while varsity newcomer Katie Pohlman (5-8 junior
setter) is out indefinitely due to the same
accident that Lehmkuhle was in.
Stewart will have three more letterwinners returning from last falls 8-15 edition,
her first after taking over for Joy Early:

We are bringing back a lot of experience
to the 2016 season with seven seniors. We
lost a good class of seniors but we bring
back a very talented groups of girls, Stober
said. There will be more depth at multiple
positions, which will cause a lot of competition for playing time. We look to put more
pressure on opposing teams with this added
depth.
Promising newcomers that Stober is
counting on to do just that and perhaps grab open starting spots are junior
Devyn Carder (midfielder), junior Brooke
Rice (midfielder), sophomore Kylie Gossett (midfielder), sophomore Ally Hastings
(goalie) and freshman Madi Schuck (mid-

fielder).
However, with new players stepping in,
there are certain things a coach is always concerned with starting a season.
We need to work on communication and
movement this year. We need to continue
to learn the game and move as a unit, he
added. There are a lot of good teams in the
area and the NWC. Allen East and Bluffton
both return a good group of girls. We look to
continue to improve on our fundamentals and
working together.
With improved depth, we will look to
compete in many games this year. The girls
have been working really hard leading into
the season and look to improve as the year
goes on.

Gerker hopes dozen veterans mean big 2016 for Big Green boys soccer

OTTOVILLE Ottovilles boys soccer

team went 9-8-0 in 2015 for head coach Eric
Gerker, including a 2-2-0 mark in the Putnam County League.
With a dozen letterwinners back from that
relatively-youthful team and a boatload of
freshmen to bolster the veterans, Gerker
has hopes to vastly improve his 9-year Big
Green mark of 110-40-11 (118-48-11 overall).
The Big Green will be young again, with
only two seniors on the roster. However,
seven starters and 12 letterman overall return, Gerker began.

The two most experienced veterans
are fourth-year senior Conner Kuhlman
(midfielder) and fourth-year senior Emitt
German (defender/sweeper), along with
third-year junior Jon Knippen (goalkeeper/
defender), third-year junior Brendan Siefker (forward/midfielder), Troy Warnecke
(junior defender/sweeper), Derek Kemper
(junior defender), Connor Fanning (junior
forward), third-year junior forward Evan
Boecker, third-year junior Josh Sarka (forward/midfielder), sophomore midfielder
Carson Stoner, sophomore midfielder Connor Wannemacher and sophomore Jaden
Schnipke (midfielder/forward).
The four graduated performers are Jared
Fanning, Dustin Trenkamp, Drew Williams
and Rudy Wenzlick.
Offense will be the biggest challenge.
Jared Fanning was lost to graduation; he accounted for 60 percent of the teams total offense a year ago, Gerker continued.
Prospects expected to contribute include

of the season, Gerker added.
The junior varsity team, headed by varsity assistant coach Dustin Markward, has
everybody except the two seniors.
The Big Green began the 2016 boys soccer campaign on Saturday, Aug. 20, at home
versus Spencerville.

Siefker sets the pace for Ottoville cross country

OTTOVILLE Numbers continue to

tell the story for veteran Ottoville boys and
girls cross country mentor Bob Kaple, commencing his 48th year as the coach for the
program.
He had six boys last season losing
none to graduation or attrition and has
seven this year, which means health remains a premium.
The ongoing issue with low numbers for
the girls continues as he has three runners,
compared to three last season, with the girls
competing as individuals and not registering a team score.
The good thing is for the boys is he returns one of Division IIIs best harriers, junior Brendan Siefker.
Brendan was fourth in the State Cross
Country Meet last fall as a sophomore, so
he is one of the divisions top returning run-

with him, Kaple began. Eric Von Sossan
(fourth-year senior) is back as our number-2
runner, Cody Kemper (fourth-year senior)

(fourth-year senior) is our fourth man coming back.
We have three boys: junior veteran

and freshman Kyle Looser; that will be battling for the fifth spot.
On the Lady Big Green side, the trio he
has are all veterans of the varsity wars:
third-year junior Elyse Baker, third-year junior McKenna Byrne and third-year classmate Brittany Schleeter.
With those three letterwinners, McKenna should again be our leader and she has
a good shot of making it to Regionals. We
are looking for all three to continue their
improvement, Kaple added.
Ottoville begins the 2016 cross country season on Saturday, Aug. 27, at the St.
Johns Invitational.

a nice balance across the field. As with any
team, the health of the team during the season is our main concern, Warnecke said.
This year, we have been working hard in
the preseason and we should improve our
record from last season.

league this year and I look forward to seeing
the teams hard work pay off.

Andy Shafer had a magical 2014, making it all the way to the Division VII State semifinals before falling to eventual champion
Marion Local.
Last years 5-5 season (2-5 in the Northwest Conference) wasnt
as much.
The fifth-year head man for the Bulldogs with a 21-23 mark
at Grove and 39-46 overall hopes that he can recapture some of
the 2014 magic.
He will build this years unit around the experience he has up
front on both sides of the ball.
Those will be our strengths for the season; we have a very experienced offensive line. We return a 3-year starting quarterback
in Reid Stechschulte (5-11, 170, senior; Honorable-mention AllNWC) and two running backs Lachlan Clymer (6-0, 175, senior)
and Eric Warnecke (5-10, 180, senior) though we have to replace our top receivers (Aiden Fortman, Baily Clement and Logan
Diller), Shafer observed.
The standard-bearer up front will be third-year starting lineman
Rece Roney (6-3, 260, senior; Honorable-mention All-Ohio pick
in Division VII, first-team All-Northwest District, first-team AllNWC) and he will have plenty of support in the trenches via experienced hands such as Logan Ridenour (6-0, 235, senior), Adam
Birkemeyer (6-1, 175, senior) at center and Cody Johnson (6-4,
380, sophomore).
Outside, Grant Cassidy (5-8, 160, senior) and Caleb Barrientes
(5-9, 160, sophomore) are experienced route-runners.
Also gone are Jake Utendorf at guard, Brandt Follas at tight end,
2-way lineman T.J. Pardo and running back Isaac Siefker.
Roney will also set the standard on the defensive line as well at
tackle, along with end Birkemeyer, tackle Johnson and Northwest

COLUMBUS GROVE The Columbus Grove volleyball program has been a steady success under succeeding head coaches.
The Lady Bulldogs finished 13-10 under then-coach Susan
Jones in 2015, including 6-1 in the Putnam County League and
5-3 in the Northwest Conference.
For new coach Kim Birnesser to continue that trend, she must
replace five letterwinners.
Gone from a year ago are Mackenzie Clymer, MaKayla Roman,
Madison Vorhees, Robyn Schumacher and Sammi Rosengarten.

we must address is constant communication during a volley, as
well as serving consistency and controlling our passing.
The new coach points to newcomers Jenny Ellerbrock (5-5 senior defensive specialist), Jordin Basinger(5-5 senior defensive
specialist/libero) and Hallie Malsam 5-9 senior outside hitter) as
particularly promising.
We look to be competitive and play every volley focused and
and with a purpose. We expect to be a strong presence in both
leagues, she added.

COLUMBUS GROVE Columbus Groves boys cross country has a mix of veteran
runners and newcomers for the 2016 season.
There are five returning lettermen, one State qualifier, one first-team All-Northwest
Conference runner and four brand new runners on this years squad.
We have an interesting mix of talented veterans who have tasted success in the past and
a crop of guys who are green but eager to contribute. We have a solid four runners right
now but as any Amish farmer will tell you, you cant pull a 4-horse plow with three horses.
We are still looking for a solid #5 runner, said 11-year veteran coach Terry Schnipke.
The Bulldogs will rely heavily on veteran senior captains Boone Brubaker and Preston
Brubaker. Boone finished second in the NWC meet last year and has State meet experience. Preston made a big push at the end of last year and qualified for the State meet
individually in Hebron.
Schnipke believes his seniors who helped lead an NWC runner-up finish, titles in the
Old Shoe and Kenton invitationals and third in the Van Wert Invitational (big-school division) will carry the team this fall.
Boone and Preston and (letterwinning senior captain) Austin Sager have logged some
quality miles this summer. We will look to them to provide the leadership we need to
be successful this year, Schnipke continued. Sophomore Grant Mumaugh (a letterman)

Our overall outlook is the season is looking positive and we expect to compete at every

Those who did get some playing time in
relief that could be in line to step into starting
spots include Carpenter (line) and defensive
backs Dickson, Schrolucke, Ford and Blair.
Zerbe expects further depth on the defensive side from lineme Hughes, Sutherland,
ODell and Dues; linebackers Becker, Settlemire and Market; and secondary mates
Goecke, Daniel Corso and Rex.
We have to replace a talented group from
a year ago but we have some kids who have
worked hard and are ready for varsity competition, Zerbe remarked. With 16 seniors
on the roster, we feel like we have good
leadership and a bunch of great attitudes
throughout the entire team. We look forward
to continuing our tradition of being a tough,
hard-nosed football program.

The Spencerville boys
soccer team has had
a number of girls on its
roster the past few
seasons.
In the meantime,
enough interest had been
gathered for the school
to make a foray into fielding a girls soccer team.
With head coach
Kathy Goecke (who has
been at the school for
four years) at the controls,
2016 will be the inaugural year for the Bearcats
in the varsity soccer wars.
She has a handful of veterans from the boys varsity wars to build this
roster around.
That experience is led by senior defender Christina Emery, senior forward
Carliegh Hefner, junior midfielder/defender Madison Pugh, junior midfielder Sydney Shaffer and junior forward Alexis Wolfe.
However, that experience will be offset by the fact that the other 10 players on the roster are freshmen and therefore new to the varsity level.

Wishers Bearcat boys return six for 2016 soccer

SPENCERVILLE Andy Wisher has had a co-ed soccer unit in his first
two seasons as the Spencerville head man, going 13-12-4.
This fall, the girls have their own varsity team for the first time ever, so his
numbers fell from 22 to 17.
Still, he has six starters back from his dual-conference (Northwest Conference and Western Ohio Soccer League) unit that finished 6-8-2.
Back for more in the starting 11 are Chandler Kahle (4th-year senior
striker), Griffen Croft (4th-year senior forward/goalkeeper), Thad Ringwald

volleyball program had four different leaders in the previous four years.
Tom Wegesin was the fourth last fall, returning to the position he had held in the
mid-2000s.
He is back, as are all seven starters from a
1-22 roster with no seniors in 2015.
Leading the still-young Black Attack is

outside hitter; honorable-mention AllNorthwest Conference), third-year senior
Olivia Clark (outside hitter), third-year
junior Maggie Patterson (middle hitter),

We will continue to rebuild the program
and continue to improve on our techniques.
We should be an improved team this season
with the infusion of talent from the freshmen class, Wegesin said. We need to keep
working on our overall play as we are just
getting this team together with almost half
made up of freshmen.
I look for a bright future with the talent I
see rising in our program.

He has compiled a 2,666-2,148 mark in
44 years at the boys helm, including last
falls 43-90 record that was good for sixth
place n the Northwest Conference and
eighth in the Division III Districts.
On the girls side, his 35-year slate is
1,514-674, including last seasons 9-79 finish, good for fourth in the NWC.
On the boys side, he returns everybody
that lettered six led by third-year senior first runner and Regional qualifier Austin Conrad, third-year junior second man
Robert Modic, veteran junior third man
Hunter Stephen, fourth-year senior fourth
man Ed Smith, veteran junior fifth runner
Kalob Pitson and third-year junior sixth
man Matt Wood.
Add to that promising newcomers such
as freshman Keagan Gaskill, freshman Seth
Clark and classmate Andrew Broseke and
his team goals of finish in the top one-half
of the teams in each meet and improving
throughout the season are very achievable.
One of the things we do well is work
hard in practice; the teams success will depend on how hard the runners work. Another is we have a good attitude, McMichael
said. What we need to work on is learning
how to race and run as a pack.
In my opinion, in our league, the top
four boys teams are Lincolnview, Columbus Grove, Crestview and Bluffton.
On the Lady Bearcat side, he only had
three runners in 2015, so they did not have
a team score.
With the addition of one other runner,
they again wont have a team score.
The girls are paced by third-year junior
Destiney Fiely, veteran junior Jayden Smith
and veteran classmate Haley Volbert.
Sophomore Alivia McMichael is a promising newcomer for the team.
The girls also work really hard in practice; one of our team goals is to improve
throughout the season and each week, he
added. For the girls, we really need to
work on running a fast pace, learning how
to race and building our endurance.
Columbus Grove, Lincolnview, Bluffton and Crestview are the top teams in the
NWC for the girls.
Bev Wisher returns for her eighth year as
an assistant coach.

KALIDA Kristen Stechschulte had a

very successful 2015 volleyball campaign
for the Kalida team, her third season at the
helm of the LadyCat netters.
They finished 16-7 overall, 4-2 in the Putnam County League.
She returns a healthy number of letterwinners from that unit seven and expects even bigger and better things for 2016.

She is anticipating even better performances from veterans in senior defensive

In having to replace the graduated Kylie Osterhage (4 varsity years; outside hitter), middle hitter Allison Recker (3 years),
Allison Wurth (defensive specialist) and
Brooke Lucke (defensive specialist), she is
expecting major contributions from promising newcomers in junior defensive specialist Kierstan Siebeneck and junior right-side
hitter Kyona Gray.
Our overall outlook is encouraging.
Girls have been working hard and working
together as a team, Stechschulte added.

119-53-38 mark in his previous decade as
the Kalida head girls soccer coach.
Last season ended up 13-6-2 and the LadyCats won the Putnam County League outright with a 4-0-0 mark.

Seven starters used up their eligibility in
2015 but Kehres begins his 11th campaign

KALIDA Long-time head coach Mark

Czubik finished his 26th season at the helm
of the Kalida boys soccer program with an
11-7-1 mark, including 3-1-0 in the competitive Putnam County League.
That crew was paced by 10 veteran seniors from the season before.
However, with the end of 2015, that saw
the end of their scholastic eligibility.
Though the cupboard is not bare as seven letterwinners are back from that team,
this years Wildcat crew will be extremely
young as only one senior is on the 27-man
varsity/junior varsity roster.
Lone senior Ryan Ellerbrock (defender)
will look to set the tone for the 2016 team,
along with veterans in junior defender

Kalida girls runners have big hole to fill for 2016

KALIDA Kayla Stechschulte had a

very successful third season of coaching the
Kalida girls cross country team.
Her LadyCats finished fourth at Districts
and 14th at the Division III Regional race.
She returns five veterans from that unit.
She lost three from that group but the
biggest hole is replacing 4-time Regional
qualifier and 1-time State participant Katelyn Siebeneck, as well as veteran Allison
Siebeneck & Erica Honigfort.
As well, three other expected veterans
back for 2016 are not back for their senior
seasons.
She does return fourth-year senior Kelly
Doepker, fourth-year senior Kristen Fortman, veteran senior Abby Langhals, veteran senior Erica Edwards and veteran junior
Taylor Lucke.
The girls have worked extremely hard
in the off-season, putting in the miles that
are needed to be successful. The camaraderie of this team is also key, with the girls

KALIDA Scott Miller has been a head

coach for the Kalida boys cross country
team for its entire 8-year existence.
He had no seniors on last years roster, so
he anticipates improvement from his Wildcat team that ended up 10th as a team in the
Division III Districts last fall.
Topping the list of returnees are fourthyear senior Adam von der Embse, fourthyear senior Caleb Siebeneck and fourth-year
Ka
senior Austin Nartker.

Also back is junior Jacob Kahle, sophomore Adam Fitzgerald, sophomore Treyton
Martin and sophomore Trevor Vorst.
Only one letterman chose not to go out in
2016, so freshman Noah Miller will have an
immediate chance to make an impact in the
new campaign.
We have good leadership with three seniors that have taken a very active role in
leading the team. The runners have good
chemistry and are working extremely hard
at getting better each day, Miller explained.

Evans expecting better things from Lancer netters

MIDDLE POINT JaNahn Evans has

a 14-32 record in two seasons as the head
coach of the Lincolnview volleyball team.
Her Lancers finished 4-19 a year ago but
returns seven players that started in 2015,
plus a pair of letterwinners, from a very
young team in 2015.
Leading the way are first-team All-Northwest Conference selection Katlyn Wendel,
a senior, who was the Lincolnview Offensive Award Winner last fall, as well as junior Kayla Schimmoeller (NWC Honorable
Mention).
Also back as starters is junior Alana Williams (returning back this year after ACL
tear in the third match last year), junior
MaKenna Klausing, sophomore Morgan
Miller, sophomore Carly Wendel and sophomore Lakin Brant, Lincolnviews 2015
Defensive Award Winner).
Those that lettered off the bench coming back are junior Kaitlyn Brenneman and
sophomore Maddie Jenkins.
I expect my team to compete aggressively this season. We still have a young team
but they are all returning with experience
on the varsity level; I expect us to improve
every day, Evan explained. I am expecting great leadership from my senior, Katlyn
Wendel. She has done an outstanding job
this summer of leading this team in working together and staying focused. Kayla
Schimmoeller is also a natural leader who
the girls look to. Her positive attitude and
competitive play brings out the best in all
the players.

Moody has holes to fill for Lancer boys soccer

MIDDLE POINT Lincolnviews boys soccer crew rebounded from an 0-fer (14 losses) in 2014 with a 5-8-4 mark in 2015
under first-year head coach Anson Moody.
They ended up 3-1-1 and tied for second place in the first-ever
Northwest Conference race and 2-3-2 in the Western Ohio Soccer
League, good for sixth.
He had a veteran team last fall and returns five lettermen, led by
third-year junior forward/midfielder/defender/goalkeeper Cody
Hoehn and third-year junior Braxten Robey (forward/midfielder/
defender),
We are a very young team with a lot of up and coming talented
players. Im not sure what the 2016 season will bring but Im very
excited to get the season underway, Moody explained. This season, we will have a lot of young underclassmen filling the shoes
of the nine seniors lost to the 2015 season and two other lettermen
that chose not to go in 2016.

Lincolnview girls harriers boast experience for 2016

Langdon saw his Lincolnview
girls cross country earn an eighthplace finish at the Division III
Regional Meet last fall.
He returns six girls that were
on that team last fall that ended
up District runner-up and captured the Northwest Conference,
as well as being ranked in the top
20 in the state all season and totaled a 186-22 mark.
Third-year senior Abbie Enyart, who qualified to Regionals
on an individual basis the last
two campaigns, will lead the
2016 edition of Lady Lancers, as
well as veteran sophomore Rylee
Byrne, who also qualified for Regionals.
Also back are third-year junior
Alena Looser, junior Miah Katalenas, sophomore Brayden Langdon
and sophomore Madeline Snyder
for a still youthful unit.
Anna Gorman, a Regional
qualifier, exhausted her eligibility, as did Kerstin Roberts and
Whitney Welker.
Expectations for 2016 season
are excellent because the girls
also return a large portion of their
varsity team from last season.
We lost Anna Gorman to graduation, who is currently running
for Indiana Tech, but most of the
top girls return, Langdon noted.
The girls will not have the depth
that the boys have but the girls
we have returning are strong. Our
top two girls should be sophomores Rylee Byrne and Brayden
Langdon. Both had outstanding
track seasons this past spring.
The key for the girls will be
to stay healthy. If we can do that,
the girls will again have great
team success and we are look-

state-qualifying team, Langdon said. We
are still going to be very young with eight
of our top 12 being either a freshman or a

sophomore. We hope to get stronger as the
season progresses as we are relying on several freshmen to factor into the varsity, as
well as three sophomores that ran at the
State meet last year.
We certainly want to defend our NWC
title and qualify for the Regional meet again
this season to have a chance to make our
fourth consecutive trip to the State meet.
The boys have put in the time this summer
and we are now ready to start racing and see
where we are so we know how much more
work we need to put in to reach our goals.
We had a great summer and a very good
camp, so our expectations are high.
Assistant coaches include Seth Wisener
(varsity assistant), Ben Cowan (junior high
head coach) and Trina Langdon (volunteer).
Lincolnview opens the season on Saturday, Aug. 27, at the St. Johns Invitational.

As we begin our season, we have developed new leaders to continue our strive for
excellence; that is a strength for this team,
Kehres said. Our biggest weakness on this
season is we just have two seniors; we have
a very young team which needs to adjust to
varsity soccer.
Those that graduated from the 2015 edition took 28 varsity letters with them:
Brittany Kahle (forward/midfielder), Joni
Kaufman (defender), Paige Roller (midfielder/forward), Alexa Ellerbrock (forward), Laine Laudick (midfielder/goalkeeper), Cathy Basinger (defender) and
Mckenna Richey (midfielder).
Kehres will be looking for eight promising newcomers to fill in and provide more
depth for 2016: Mckayla Maag (freshman
defender), Madison Langhals (freshman
midfielder/forward), Mckenna Bockrath

(freshman midfielder), Kyla Fortman (freshman midfielder), Carlie Rampe (freshman
defender/midfielder), Abby Wurth (freshman midfielder/forward), Sydney Wurth
(freshman defender/midfielder) and classmate Bailey White (forward/goalkeeper).
Having lost seven senior starters, we
are looking for a new identity, he added.
Hopefully we will gel as a team and find
our identity by tournament.
With the always competitive PCL and
rivalry games, everyone has a chance to be
league champs.

Kalida starts the new girls soccer campaign on the road on Wednesday, Aug. 24,
at Van Buren.

The Lady Green started the Wolfe tenure

We have a lot of new faces defensively;
we have to replace some top tacklers, Shafer added. As always, we play in a very
good conference, so each week, we will
need to count on our experienced lines to

win games.
Assistant coaches include Scott Snider,
Ben Thiel, Jeremy Wyant, Kyle Johann,
Brandon Craft, Trey Roney and Ernie Siefker.

last few years as an underclassman, is looking to
be an offensive threat, she continued. Raygen
Martinez, Jenna Litsey and Taylor Hobbs were
defensive powerhouses the last several years as
underclassmen. Kottia Williams looks to maintain
the low scoring record she had in her underclassman years.
Second-year player Olivia Goecke looks to
continue to add to our defensive power. Destiney
Stephens, Rachel Oakman and Olivia Adams look
to add some offensive and midfield speed as new
players. New player Rachel Plummer will also aid
defensively.
Coach Goecke knows who will be required to
lead this new team.

With the mostly young team that includes
some new players, we are counting on the more
experienced players to help the team step up to
the high school level and improve passing and
ball-handling to the more competitive level, she
added. We expect to be competitive with schools
within our division.
We look forward to being included in the
Northwest Conference and Western Ohio Soccer
League next season. Our goal this year will be to
go as far as we can in OHSAA tournament play.

The Spencerville girls soccer team began its inaugural season on Tuesday, Aug. 23, at Benjamin
Logan.

Tanner Smith and first-year runner, Jordan
Bellman, a sophomore. One of those three
will likely be vying for our #5 spot. We have
a lot of young runners who are still learning
what it takes to be successful in a 5-K race
and we are not very deep, so we need to avoid
the injury bug.

We have a hard-working group of kids

with good attitudes; that is a strength of this
team going in, Czubik said. Our concerns
are experience, depth and youth.
We will be competitive but the won-loss
record may not reflect it. Fort Jennings and
Continental appear to be PCL favorites.
The junior varsity team includes Elkins,
Hermiller, Kahle, Doepker, Krouse, Bellmann, Erhart, Fersch, sophomore Cameron
Siebeneck (midfielder) and frosh Matt Kehres (midfielder/forward), Mason Kerner
(midfielder/forward). Tyler Klausing (midfielder/forward), Zach von der Embse (midfielder/forward), Logan Langhals (midfielder/defender), Brayden Recker (goalkeeper)
and Evan Roebke (midfielder/defender).

Thatcher can lean on a solid group of veteran players to build around this season, with
Allison Warnement, Frankie Carey, Haley
Pollock and Olivia Gorman all back for another season.
Also back are 2015 letterwinners Maddie
Gorman, Trinity Brown and Cierra Brown.
Additionally, sophomores Aida Welch and

Reagan Boley bring athleticism to the pitch.
Welch and Boley both played basketball last
year and Boley runs track.
We play in two conferences, the NWC
and the WOSL. Both are going to be a challenge but we hope to make everyone of them
competitive and improve throughout the season, Thatcher said. We hope to improve
our record from last year and be competitive
in every game we play.
Lehman Catholic has won each of the first
two WOSL titles but Allen East joins the
league in 2016. The Lady Mustangs have
won each of the last three NWC crowns.
Lima Central Catholic also figures to contend for a WOSL title.
Lincolnview hosts Fort Jennings on Thursday, Aug. 25, to open the season.
