GENERAL INTRODUCTION

We hope to provide this parish liturgical manual for all those who assist in some
manner in the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy, and it has several goals: to impart
an ever increasing vigor to the Christian life of the faithful in our parish; to suitably
apply to the circumstances of our own times those things within the liturgical
realm which are subject to change; to foster whatever can promote union among
all who believe in Christ, especially within families in our own parish who are not
one in faith; to strengthen whatever can help to call the whole of mankind into the
household of the Church.i
The work of our redemption from original sin was accomplished most of all in the
Divine Sacrifice of Jesus Christ in His passion, death and resurrection. Jesus
instituted the Sacrament of the Eucharist, the Sacrament of His Sacred Body, Blood,
Soul and Divinity so that we might participate in His one Divine Sacrifice. The
Apostles and the first disciples began to celebrate this Sacrifice of Jesus from the
earliest days; without interruption, their successors and the members of the
Church through the last 2,000 years have continued to make present that Divine
Sacrifice and to unite themselves to Christ in the Sacrament of the Eucharist.
This Sacred Liturgy of the Eucharist which we celebrate (the Mass) is the greatest
way for us to express in our lives and manifest to others the saving mystery of
Jesus Christ and the real nature of the true Church. Through the celebration of the
Mass we see that at the core of the Church's identity, she is both human and
divine, visible and yet invisibly equipped, eager to act and yet intent on
contemplation, present in this world and yet not at home in it; and the Church is all
these things in such a way that in her liturgical actions the human is directed and
subordinated to the divine, the visible likewise to the invisible, action to
contemplation, and this present world to that Heavenly City which is yet to come
and which we seek. Every day the Sacred Liturgy builds up those who celebrate it
into a Sacred Temple of the Lord (a dwelling place of the Holy Spirit), and at the
same time it beautifully strengthens their power to preach Christ. In doing these
Page | 4

things it shows the Church to those who are outside as a sign lifted up in the midst
of the world under which the children of God around the world may gather
together, until there is one sheepfold and one Shepherd.ii
God, who wills that all men be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth iii,
and who in many and various ways spoke in times past to the fathers by the
prophetsiv, when the fullness of time had come sent His Son, Jesus Christ. He is
the Eternal Word of God made Flesh and anointed by the Holy Spirit to preach the
Gospel to the poor, to heal the contrite of heartv, to be a bodily and spiritual
medicinevi, the Mediator between God and manvii. When Jesus Christ, a Divine
Person, took on our human nature as a man, He became the instrument of our
salvation. In Him the perfect achievement of our reconciliation came forth, and the
fullness of divine worship was given to usviii.
The wonderful works of God among the Old Testament Israelites were a prelude to
the work of Christ the Lord in redeeming mankind and giving perfect glory to God.
He achieved His task principally in the Paschal Mystery (His blessed passion, death,
and resurrection), and in His glorious ascension. Recognizing His victory over sin
and death, we pray, dying, He destroyed our death and, rising, He restored our
lifeix. It was from the side of Christ as He slept the sleep of death upon the cross
that the wondrous Sacrament of the whole Churchx came forth.
Just as Christ was sent by the Father, so also He sent out the apostles, filled with
the Holy Spirit. He did this so that, by preaching the Gospel to every creaturexi,
they might proclaim that the Son of God had freed us from the power of Satanxii
and from death, and that He has brought us into the kingdom of His Father. He
also sent them out so that they might continue the work of salvation which they
had proclaimed, by means of the Divine Sacrifice and the other Sacraments, around
which our entire liturgical life revolves. So we see that by baptism we are plunged
into the Paschal Mystery of Christ: we die with Him, are buried with Him, and rise
with Himxiii; we are adopted as sons of our Heavenly Father, in which we cry: Abba,
Fatherxiv, and so we become true adorers whom the Father seeksxv. In a similar
way, as often as we eat the Supper of the Lord we proclaim the death of the Lord
Page | 5

until He comesxvi. For all these reasons, on the very day of Pentecost, when the
Church appeared before the world, those who received the word of Peter were
baptized. And they continued steadfastly in the teaching of the apostles and in
the communion of the breaking of bread and in prayers...praising God and being in
favor with all the peoplexvii. From that time onwards the Church has always come
together to celebrate the Paschal Mystery: seeing those things which were in all
the scriptures concerning Himxviii, celebrating the Eucharist in which the victory
and triumph of His death are again made presentxix, and at the same time giving
thanks to God for His unspeakable giftxx in Christ Jesus, in praise of His gloryxxi,
through the power of the Holy Spirit.
To accomplish so great a work, Christ is always present in His Church, especially in
her liturgical celebrations. By His power He is present in all the Sacraments, so that
when a man baptizes it is really Christ Himself who baptizesxxii. Jesus Christ is
present in the Sacrifice of the Mass in many ways: first, under the Eucharistic
species; secondly, in the person of His minister, the priest (the same [Jesus Christ],
now offering [the Sacrifice] through the ministry of priests, who formerly offered
Himself on the Crossxxiii); thirdly, He is present in His Word, since it is He Himself
who speaks when the Holy Scriptures are read in the Church; lastly, He is present
when the Church prays and sings, for He promised: where two or three are
gathered together in my Name, there am I in the midst of themxxiv.
Christ indeed always associates the Church with Himself in this great work wherein
God is perfectly glorified and men are sanctified. The Church is His beloved Bride
who calls to her Lord, and through Him offers worship to the Eternal Father.
Rightly, then, we see the Sacred Liturgy as an exercise of the Priestly Office of Jesus
Christ. In the Liturgy the sanctification of man is signified by signs perceptible to
the senses, and man's sanctification is accomplished in a way which corresponds
with each of these signs; in the Liturgy the whole public worship is performed by
the Mystical Body of Jesus Christ, that is, by our Head (Jesus Christ) and His
members.

Page | 6

From this it follows that every liturgical celebration is a sacred action surpassing all
others, because it is an action of Christ the Priest and of His Body (the Church); no
other action of the Church can equal its efficacy by the same title and to the same
degree.
In the Mass, the earthly Liturgy, we celebrate a foretaste of that supreme Liturgy in
Heaven, toward which we journey as pilgrims. There Christ is sitting at the right
hand of God, a Minister of the Holy of Holies and of the true Tabernaclexxv. We sing
a hymn to the Lord's glory with all the warriors of the heavenly army. We venerate
the memory of the saints, and we hope to live in fellowship with them. We eagerly
await Our Savior, Our Lord Jesus Christ, until He appears and we too will appear
with Him in gloryxxvi.
The Sacred Liturgy of the Mass is the source of God's life for the entire activity of
the Church. Before men can come to the Liturgy they must be called by faith and to
conversion: How then are they to call upon Him in Whom they have not yet
believed? But how are they to believe Him Whom they have not heard? And how are
they to hear if no one preaches? And how are men to preach unless they be sent
out?xxvii. Therefore the Church announces the good tidings of salvation to those
who do not believe, so that all men may know the true God and Jesus Christ whom
He has sent, and may be converted from their ways, doing penancexxviii. To
believers also the Church must always preach faith and penance; she must prepare
them for the sacraments, teach them to observe all that Christ has commandedxxix,
and invite them to all the works of charity, piety, and the apostolate. Al these
works make it clear that Christ's faithful, though not of this world, are to be the
light of the world and are to glorify the Father in the sight of our fellow men.
Nevertheless, the Sacred Liturgy is the mountain peak toward which the activity of
the Church is directed; at the same time it is the source from which she receives all
her power, life and energy. The focus of our apostolic works is that all who are
made sons of God by faith and baptism should come together to praise God in the
midst of His Church, to take part in the Divine Sacrifice, the Supper of the Lamb of
God.
Page | 7

The Sacred Liturgy in its turn moves the faithful to be one in holinessxxx as they
are filled with the Paschal Sacraments; in it we pray that they may hold fast in
their lives to what they have grasped by their faithxxxi; in it the Eucharist renews
the covenant between God and man; it draws the members of the Church into the
compelling love of Christ and sets them on fire. Therefore, from the Liturgy, and
especially from the Eucharist, three marvelous things happen: first, grace is poured
forth upon us as though from a fountain; secondly, the sanctification of men in
Christ is accomplished; and finally, the glorification of God is achieved in the most
efficacious way possible. All the other activities of the Church are first of all
energized and sustained by the graces of the Eucharist which flow from the Sacred
Liturgy, and secondly they are directed back toward the Sacred Liturgy as toward
their ultimate goal.
However, in order that the Divine Liturgy may be able to produce its full effects, it
is necessary that all the members of the Church come to it with proper
dispositions, that their hearts and minds should be in tune with the words of their
voices, and that they should cooperate with Divine Grace lest they receive it in
vainxxxii. As pastors or shepherds of souls, we realize that when the Liturgy is
celebrated something more is required than the mere observation of the laws
governing valid and lawful celebration; it is our duty also to insure that all the
members of the Church take part in the Sacred Liturgy fully aware of what they are
doing, actively engaged in the rite and enriched by its effects.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS OF ALL WHO ASSIST AT MASS

ADORATION

As the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Jesus, unites us with God, our assistance at
the Sacred Liturgies should be nothing less than an expression of the place of the
Eucharist in our individual lives. We depend on the Eucharist, the presence of Jesus'
passion, death and resurrection, for our relationship with God as adopted members
of the Kingdom of Heaven. The Eucharist is, in a sense, the Key to Heaven, both
now and for eternity. Jesus' passion, death and resurrection destroyed the power of
sin and death and opened the gates of Heaven; our union with Jesus in this mystery
of our salvation is the foundation of our eternal life with Him.
As we each desire to assist at the celebration of this Sacred Mystery of our
redemption, the Eucharist must be the solid and firm foundation of our life. It is
recommended that everyone who is able to, especially Extraordinary Ministers of
Holy Communion, should spend one hour each week praying with our Lord present
in the Eucharist. The parents of young servers should spend this hour each week
with their children as a family.
DRESS CODE

As leaders of the assembly in their worship of God, those who are assisting at Mass
should dress in a manner that is appropriate with the celebration that is being
offered. It is never permissible to wear shorts, flip-flops, T-shirts and assist in
your role in the Liturgy. On occasions of Holy Days and Sundays, blue-jeans and
tennis shoes are also not permissible. It is preferred that all who assist at the
Sacred Mysteries of the Mass wear their Sunday Best and try to inspire the
congregation to a higher standard. To quote an article on this topic: Seeing the
dress and demeanor of Catholics in Church ought to be a source of pride. They
ought to manifest a genuine respect for Jesus present, as well as for the values of
the Catholic Church. For these values, saints, declared and not declared, gave their
lives; for these values each Catholic must be willing to dress in a fashion which
shows recognition and respect.xxxiii

UNDERSTANDING ACTIVE PARTICIPATION

Everyone who comes to the celebration of the Divine Sacrifice of the Mass is called
to participate in that celebration with both mind and heart. As Mass Captains,
ushers, altar servers, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, sacristans, or
lectors, exercising your various roles within the Sacred Liturgy does not fulfill this
call to active or actual participation. The kind of participation which the Church
calls everyone to exercise is more important yet less visible than filling these roles
of service within the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy.
In an addressxxxiv to a group of U.S. Bishops in 1998, Pope John Paul II discussed
the notion of active participation as entering more deeply into the contemplative
dimension of worship, which includes the sense of awe, reverence and adoration
[as] fundamental attitudes in our relationship with God. Active participation
certainly means that, in gesture, word, song, and service, all the members of the
community take part in an act of worship, which is anything but inert and passive.
Yet active participation does not preclude the active passivity of silence, stillness
and listening: indeed, it demands it.
It is important to remember that as we exercise our various roles of service within
the Sacred Liturgy, those actions by themselves are not sufficient for our active
participation. What are necessary for everyone, whether sitting in the pew or
exercising some liturgical role, are the interior awareness of what is being
celebrated in the Mass and the attitude of uniting ourselves with the Sacrifice of
Christ. True active participation is an interior act of making ourselves fully present
at the Sacrifice of Christ, fully uniting ourselves with His Sacrifice, fully offering
ourselves to our Heavenly Father with His Sacrifice, and being fully open and
receptive to the graces which flow from His Sacrifice. Active participation is a
disposition rather than an external action; it is more being than doing. Having a
better understanding of how we truly are called to participate in the Sacrifice of the
Mass, let us look in general at how, through our various roles, we assist our
brothers and sisters to enter more effectively into their own active participation.

Page | 10

Generally speaking, whether you assist as an altar server, Mass Captain, lector,
extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, sacristan, or usher, you each in your
own manner exercise a genuine liturgical function. Because each role carries the
weight of assisting in the Divine Sacrifice of Christ and of helping others enter
more fully into the celebration of that Sacrifice, each of you ought to exercise your
particular role with sincere piety and decorum. It is demanded by so exalted a
service, and it is rightly expected by God's People. Consequently, each of you must
be deeply filled with the spirit of the Divine Liturgy, and each must also be able to
perform their function in a correct and orderly manner.xxxv Let us now look more
closely at how each of you ought to assist the priest and the faithful in the
celebration of the Sacred Liturgy.

LITURGICAL MINISTRY DESCRIPTIONS

USHERS

Ushers exercise a genuine liturgical function by greeting the faithful as they arrive
and depart from Church, as well as caring for the practical needs of the faithful
who attend each Mass. Often your role provides an opportunity to show the loving
charity of Christ to those in need.
INSTRUCTIONS

Arrive 20 minutes before Mass begins and put on your Usher badge. Go to the
bulletin board, find the Weekly Minister Schedule and circle your name
indicating that you are present. If you are substituting for someone, find the
persons name that you are substituting for, cross out their name and write
yours. Special notations will be given at the bottom of the ministry sign-up
sheet and/or on the door of the usher closet in the front sacristy. Give a
moment to silent prayerful preparation for your ministry.
Please check the following:
that the collection baskets are out (they are in the closet in the front
sacristy);
make sure that you have sufficient bulletins;
that the gifts (one to three ciboria with hosts and a decanter filled with
wine) are on the table (if not, check with Father or see if they are still in
the back sacristy);
who is to be taking up the gifts (this is posted on the bulletin board in
the gathering space);
if pews need to be reserved (the reserve signs can be found in the ushers
closet);
if there are any special instructions (please check for a note on the
bottom of the Weekly Minister Sign-up Sheet which is on the bulletin

Page | 12

board in the gathering space and/or instructions are also left on the door
of the ushers closet in the front sacristy).
Greet people as they come in at ALL five entrancesthe three in the front of
church and the two in back. Please keep the doors into the church area closed.
Please greet parishioners and open the doors for them as they enter the church.
Greet everyone who comes past you. Make your first word a word of welcome.
Keep on the lookout for new members of the parish, for visitors, strangers, or
the aged. Parish forms and information on activities can be found at the
Welcome Desk and registration can also be done online. Young families may
want to know where the parent rooms are and that baby-sitting is available for
those under the age of 5 during the 10:30 Mass most Sundays. There are three
(3) hearing assistance receivers available for checkout in the First Aid closet in
the hallway. If someone wishes to use one, please get it for them and sign it
out. Tell them not to wrap the cord. At the end of Mass, make sure, the
receiver is returned, turned off and placed back in the First Aid closet.
When the servers, the lector and Father line up for Mass, the center doors only
need to be propped open.
DURING MASS

Close the centers doors unless directed otherwise (for example; baptisms).
Assist people in getting them seated. You may have to ask people to move
down. The Gathering Space is only for parents who are having difficulty with
small children. Be available to seat people until the Gloria. Assist late arrivals
as needed. Do not seat people during the readings; wait until the responsorial
psalm.

Page | 13

Participate in the Mass. The ushers should have a place toward the back of
church where they can readily assume the postures of the assemblysitting,
standing, kneelingthroughout the liturgy. One usher is to remain standing
through the entire Mass so he/she can easily be found in case of an emergency.
Provide assistance during an illness or emergency as needed. There is a phone
outside the Day Chapel should you need to call 911. You will need to press one
of the available lines to get an outside line. First Aid supplies are kept in the
cupboard across from the Parent Rooms. There is candy in the First Aid closet
in the hallway in case of a diabetic attack. There is a list of AED Heart
Defibrillator Volunteers on the inside door in the ushers closet in the front
sacristy. They are also posted by the defibrillator. There is also a first aid kit,
blanket and pillow on the bottom shelf of the table that is just inside the doors
to the main body of the church.
If you happen to notice a child leaving without an adult with them, please ask
them to go back to get an adult to go with them. This is for the childs safety.
Conduct the collections during the Mass: The collection should not start until
the music begins. It will take four ushers to take up collection in the main body
of the church. Make sure that someone goes to the Parent Rooms and takes
care of the extra seating in the church. Make sure you extend the basket far
enough into the pew and please give the parishioners time to get their money
out. As soon as the main body of the church is all collected, put a single bill in
a basket to be carried to the altar during the presentation of the gifts.
The altar server with the cross will come to lead the gifts to the sanctuary.
He/she will wait until the gifts and Father are ready before leading them up. The
collection should be first in line for the presentation of the gifts; carried by an
usher. The bread and wine follow; carried by the scheduled family. Once the
gifts are on their way, two other ushers need to transport the large collection

Page | 14

basket to the back Sacristy. The ushers will deposit the contents into the safe
located near the vestment closet in the Sacristy.
During the Our Father, one usher is to go with the extraordinary minister who
gets the consecrated hosts from the Blessed Sacrament Chapel and assist with
doors. An altar server with a candle will join you to lead the Jesus in and out of
the tabernacle.
All four ushers will go up to the front for Holy Communionone will stay in the
middle aisle the other two will move to the side aisles. Stand by the pews as a
guide during Holy Communion. The fourth usher will help the Extraordinary
Minister who is wearing the cross with the red ribbon locate anyone needing
communion brought to them. The fourth usher will then go to the choir side
and usher those sitting in chairs to the center aisle. That usher will then start
with the back rows and move forward directing the people in the two sections
by the choir and usher them around to the center aisle.
One usher should go with the Extraordinary Minister who takes the consecrated
hosts back to the Blessed Sacrament Chapel and assist with doors. Altar server
with candle will assist in leading the consecrated hosts back to the Chapel.
AFTER MASS

Pass out the bulletins (or other materials as needed) as people are leaving;
make sure all five doors are covered (never pass out bulletins before Mass.) If
you have to leave early, please ask someone who is protocol trained in the
congregation to pass out the bulletins for you. Leave a few bulletins on the
tables near the East and North entrance and in the book racks in the Gathering
Space after each Mass. After the 10:30 a.m. Mass, leave all the bulletins out.

Page | 15

Put the church back in order. Help straighten up the pews. This includes the
parent rooms. After the 10:30 a.m. Mass, collect all pencils if they have been
used.
Please take the money that is in the basket at the altar to the safe. Also, take
the envelopes that are at the Holy Family Statue to the safe.
YOU ARE EXPECTED TO:

Know where the following items are in church: First Aid Kit, Telephone, Lights, Fire
Extinguisher, Electric Power Circuit Breakers, Reserve Signs, Hearing Assistance
Receivers, AED Heart Defibrillators (by the phone in the kitchen and by the phone
in the gathering space.)
You should know how to turn on the lights.
At all times be alert to peoples need for direction to the rest rooms both upstairs
and downstairs. Be observant to extended stay in restrooms of older children.
Be observant of children going to the bathroom alone; for the safety of the child,
he/she should be sent back to the pew to get a parent to go with them.
You are responsible for getting substitutes in the event that you are unable to
usher as scheduled. Please request a sub through Ministry Pro online or call Krista
Kelley at 463-5733, ext. 110 or email her at kkelley@blessedsacramentwl.org to
inform her of the name of your substitute, the day and time of Mass he or she is
substituting. Also, let us know if you move from the area so replacements can be
found.
SPECIAL NOTES

The small closet in the front sacristy is the Ushers Closet. The collection baskets
are stored there. (Ushers at the 5:30 p.m. Massplease take out the baskets;
ushers at the 10:30 a.m. Massplease return all baskets to the closet.) Reserve
signs are also stored in the ushers closet. Usher guidelines are posted on the
inside of the door.

Page | 16

There is a pew to the left of center that is reserved for ushers. If you wish to sit
with your family, please have them sit in the pew that is in front of the reserved
pew and sit with them there.
Every Sunday in October during the homily, you will need to count those in
attendance and record it on the sheet provided on the ushers closet door in the
Sacristy.
SACRISTANS

Sacristans exercise a genuine liturgical function by carefully arranging the liturgical

books, the vestments, the sacred vessels, sacramentals and the gifts of bread and
wine.
INSTRUCTIONS

Please arrive 30 minutes before Mass is scheduled to begin so that you have
plenty of time to prepare everything for Mass without being rushed.
Please turn on all the lights 30 minutes before Mass is scheduled to begin.
KEEP ALL LIGHTS IN ALL SACRISTIES ON AT ALL TIMES FOR ALL LITURGIES.
You are in charge of the sacristy. When people begin arriving, it is your proper
place to control the atmosphere of silent preparation and calm. While
appropriate questions from those assisting at that Mass are certainly welcomed,
idle conversation must be avoided. The sacristy should not be a place for
socializing. Only those who have an assisting role in the celebration of the Mass
should be in the sacristy.
For the last 10 minutes, only the servers and the lectors should be in the
sacristy with the sacristans.
At 10 minutes before Mass begins, all roles are to be frozen as they are; if
people are missing, we will celebrate the Mass with the ones that we have
present at that moment. The Sacristan will inform the Extraordinary Ministers of

Page | 17

Holy Communion if there will be any change in the numbers/species being

distributed, accordingly.
If the Precious Blood is not distributed at a Sunday Liturgy, then a chalice
draped with a purificator must be placed on the purification table for the
ablutions.
After Mass, please ensure that everything is properly put away or prepared for
the following Mass.
ALTAR SERVERS

It is indeed a great privilege to be allowed to serve at the sacred altar of God's

Sacrifice. As an altar server, you should imagine yourself as an assistant in the
Heavenly Court of the King of the Universe, Jesus Christ our Lord and King. As
servers, you ennoble the Sacred Liturgy by providing the priest with practical
assistance. Your assistance helps the priest to celebrate the Sacred Liturgy
smoothly and elegantly, and often it allows the priest to incorporate various
options in the celebration that would be much more difficult if he had to celebrate
without assistance. In fact, of all people attending and participating in the Mass,
you will always be the one that is the closest to the action of the Sacred Liturgy;
you see many little details that most do not observe; you hear many of the quiet
prayers that the priest prays during the Liturgy that everyone else cannot hear; you
handle many of the sacred objects used in the celebration of the Sacrifice that
others are not privileged to carry; because of this, you should appreciate the high
honor of serving at Mass by showing the greatest reverence, by paying very close
attention to the details of the sacred service and by learning your role as perfectly
as possible! Always remember that you can ask the priest for help!
INSTRUCTIONS

Be sure to arrive AT LEAST 15-20 minutes before Mass. If you are not here on
time, you may find that someone else was asked to serve in your place. Go to
the bulletin board, find the Weekly Minister Schedule and circle your name

Page | 18

indicating that you are present. If you are substituting for someone, find the
persons name that you are substituting for, cross out their name and write
yours.
Put on a servers alb and cord. Make sure they are long enough. The alb
should be able to come down to your ankles before you put on the cord. Make
sure your cord is long enough to go around your waist only once. (The red
cords are used on Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Pentecost, and the Feast of the
Body & Blood.)
After you are dressed, light the altar candles and go to the front sacristy to light
the altar server candles.
Five minutes before Mass starts, meet in the Sacristy for a prayer with the
lectors and Father.
THE MASS
LITURGY OF THE WORD:

Entrance procession: Wait until the singing starts and then walk slowly up the
aisle. Servers to line up side by side at the foot of the sanctuary and bow to the
altar (candle bearers nod head, cross bearer does not bow). Candles are placed
on the credence table nearest the side youre sitting; the cross is put behind the
reredos, and the Roman Missal is picked up by the cross bearer. Lectors will
bow next, then Father will bow last.
Stand at your seat until the Glory to God and the Collect (Opening Prayer) are
said.
The cross bearer gets the Roman Missal for Father at the end of the Glory to
God.
Sit for the First Reading, the sung or recited response and the Second Reading
(turn head and look at the lector and cantor).

Page | 19

During the Gospel acclamation (alleluia), the candle bearers get their candles.
The server that sits on the right side of the priest takes his/her candle and goes
behind the reredos to meet the other candle bearer. Do not walk in front of the
priest. Wait at the credence table until both servers have their candles before
walking to the side of the altar. Wait at the side of the altar until Father gets
behind you. Then walk in front of the altar to the ambo and stand behind the
priest. Please give the priest plenty of room. Try to stand straight and even
with each other. If a deacon or assisting priest reads the gospel, the candle
bearers need to wait until Father blesses him to walk to the ambo. The cross
bearer and fourth server stand in front of their chairs with body turned towards
priest/deacon.
After the Gospel, take the candles back to the credence tables, the candle
bearer on Fathers left will walk behind the reredos to take the candle back.
Return to your chairs and sit for the homily. During the homily, turn your head
toward whoever is giving the homily.
Stand for the Creed (bow your head while reciting and by the Holy Spirit was
incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.) Remain standing for the
intercessions. Server to the left of Father will hold his binder for the prayers
before and after the intercessions, and will remain standing with the binder
through the intercessions.
LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST:

While the collection is being taken up by the ushers:

The cross bearer will place the Roman Missal on the left side of the
altar, then get the cross and stand by the credence table until the
ushers move from the center aisle to the side aisles. Once they move
to the side aisles, go to the gifts table. Once the Gift Bearers and
Usher are ready, and once Father has opened the Roman Missal and is
heading to the foot of the sanctuary, the cross bearer will lead the
Usher and Gift Bearers to the foot of the sanctuary, pause for a

Page | 20

moment for Father to reverence the crucifix, then return the cross
behind the reredo and go to the steps on your side.

All other servers will to go to the credence table; get the corporal, and
lay it on the altar and unfold it so that it is laying flatthe left edge
should line up with the center of the aisle and the bottom should line
up with the edge of the altar. Fathers chalice, one purificator and
paten are to be placed to the left of the corporal on the altar. You will
also need to get the five (5) small chalices and purificators and place
them on the corporal on the top right side of the altar. Place the
chalices in a row on the corporal and place the purificators to the right
of the corporal. Put the clear Gospel holder from the altar into the
ambo. Sit back down.

All other servers will also stand with the priest when the gifts are
brought up. Go with him to the foot of the sanctuary. Stand on the
top step. When he gives you the gifts, place them on the altar. When
you are given the collection basket, you are to place it in front of the
altar. Once gifts are placed, go to the credence table on your side.

The two servers on Fathers left get the cruets of water and wine from the
credence table and stand by the altar. The server with the wine stands by the
candle, the one with the water stands to the right of the server that has the
wine. Turn the handles toward Father. He will take them from you, pour some
in the chalice and hand them back to you. The server with the wine cruet waits
for the wine decantor and takes it back to the credence table, then stands on
the bottom step near the credence table. Both servers return to the bottom
step.
The two servers on Fathers right bring up the water cruet, bowl and finger
towel. Put the finger towel over your left arm. When Father puts his fingers
over the bowl, pour some water on them. Take the items back to the credence
table. Then stand on the bottom step near the table. The two servers on the
other side will also remain on the bottom step.

Kneel after the Holy, Holy

Server (from Fathers right) nearest the bells rings them one (1) time when
Father puts his hands over the gifts (Epiclesis) and three (3) times at the
elevation of the host and three (3) times at the elevation of the chalice. When Fr.
Ted is celebrating, make sure to extend the rings to fill the time he elevates the
host (count to five slowly between rings). With Visiting Priests, ring three
consecutive times with a pause between each ringing.
During the Our Father, the candle bearer to Fathers left is the get the candle
and meet the red-ribboned Extraordinary Minister at the door of the church.
This server will go to the Chapel, then lead Jesus from the tabernacle into the
church. Come up the center aisle and lead Jesus up to the altar where the
Extraordinary Minister will place Him. Return your candle and go to the step on
your credence table side.
Remain standing there until Father says Let us offer each other a sign of
peace. Then shake hands with everyone that is at the altar. Go back to your
place at the bottom of the steps and the cross bearer takes the Roman Missal
with him/her and places it on the credence table.
Go back to your place at the steps. Kneel when Father holds up the host and
you say I am not worthy that you should enter Stand up as soon as the first
Extraordinary Minister receives communion. One of them will come to offer you
communion. After you receive communion and the Extraordinary Ministers take
their places to give out communion, go and stand in front of your chairs and
sing; the cross bearer takes the Roman Missal with him/her. The cross bearer
also takes the water cruet and places it on the altar.
Once everyone has received communion, Father will purify the communion
vessels. Once Father is finished purifying the communion vessels, he will hand
them to the servers to place on the credence table.
Page | 22

The candle bearer to Fathers left will lead the Extraordinary Minister with the
consecrated hosts with the candle to the tabernacle and will come back up the
center aisle and return the candle to the credence table and be seated. As soon
as the Extraordinary Minister with the Body of Christ leaves the church, the rest
of the servers may be seated.
Stand for the closing prayer and blessing. The cross bearer holds the Roman
Missal for Father.
When the closing song is announced, take the Roman Missal to the credence
table and get your cross/candles. The candle bearers get the candles from their
sides and wait along with the fourth server for the cross bearer to get the cross.
The cross bearer will lead the candle bearers and the fourth server, leaving
room for all the servers and Father. Turn and walk out when Father does.
After Mass, the fourth server to ask Father if there is anything he needs you to
take to the Front Sacristy.
BEFORE YOU LEAVE CHURCH

Put the candles and cross back. Blow out the altar server candles.
While you still have your alb on, get the snuffer to snuff out the candles at the
altar. PLEASE DO NOT BLOW THEM OUT!
Take off your alb and cord. HANG THEM UP NEATLY! MAKE SURE THAT YOU
SNAP THE NECK ON THE ALB SO THAT IT STAYS ON THE HANGER.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Walk tall. Kneel with your body upright and hands folded. Stand with your feet on
the floor and dont lean against walls or furniture. Sit tall and keep your hands
folded on your lap, dont sit on your legs.
Page | 23

Keep your eyes on whats happening, not out in the pews.

Be careful carrying the candlesuse 2 hands. Try not to wobble them or blow out
the candle.
Keep a Kleenex handy. Cover your mouth if you need to yawn or sneeze. Please
do not play with your cords.
Participate in all the spoken prayers and in the singing of hymns. There are books
at the chairs; use them if necessary.
When incense is used, you will need to prepare the censor and you will receive
additional instructions by email, letter, or before Mass.
When holy water is used for the Rite of Sprinkling, Father will direct you.
If you are not able to serve on the date that you are scheduled, you are responsible
for getting a substitute should you not be able to serve. You can request a sub
online through Ministry Pro or contact Krista Kelley at
kkelley@blessedsacramentwl.org or 765-463-5733 ext. 110.

LECTORS

As Lectors, you assist the priest and faithful participating in Mass by reading the
designated passages from Sacred Scripture in a clear and effective manner. The
Liturgy of the Word is an integral part of the Sacred Liturgy, and we all desire to
receive the Word of God by listening attentively as it is read. For the greatest
benefit of your listeners, it is crucial that you read the passages clearly, calmly, and
with the inflection or meaning appropriate to the context in which it was originally
written. Ideally, you ought to invest a small amount of research and practice prior
to reading at Mass, mostly by using the readers' workbook which the parish
provides for you.

Page | 24

INSTRUCTIONS
AT HOME

Practice the readings as many times as it takes to be comfortable with the

readings before the day that you lector at a minimum, three times. The first
time through try to get your pronunciations correct. The second time through
try to find the proper rhythm and emphasis.
Recite the readings out loud, projecting your voice as if you were trying to read
to a person 4-6 feet away from you.
If you chose to look up at the congregation while reading, practice doing so at
the beginning or the end of a sentence or phrase. Again, practice until you feel
comfortable to do this. Practice until it seems you are talking to the
congregation.
BEFORE MASS

Be in church at least 15 minutes prior to Mass. Go to the bulletin board, find

the weekly minister schedule and circle your name indicating that you are
present. If you are substituting for someone, find the persons name that you
are substituting for, cross out their name and write yours. This time allows for
final preparation of your reading. Make sure the Lectionary is at the ambo and
make sure that it is set for the correct readings. Practice your readings one
final time. (Use only the Lectionary for the readingnot the Missalette.)
If the Book of Gospels is on the stand in front of the ambo, please bring it back
to the front sacristy. Make sure the clear holder for the Book of Gospels is on
the altar. If its not on the altar, it will be in the ambo.
Check with the priest for any changes or special activities during the Mass. (The
most common change is for the intercessions to be read immediately after the

Page | 25

homily and before the Profession of Faith or Creed.) On rare occasions, the
responsorial psalm will be read. If it is to be read it will be read from the
lectionary.
Locate and review the General Intercessions, checking the pronunciation of the
names of the sick, shut-ins, and the two family names included in the list.
There will be a copy of the general intercessions at the ambo and in the front
sacristy.
Check the ambo to insure the microphone is turned on and is properly
positioned. (If you have questions or the mic is not on, check with Father or the
Music Director.)
Both lectors will process into the church with Father and the servers. The
servers will bow to the altar and step onto the sanctuary, then the lectors come
up to the sanctuary step and bow to the altar. The Book of Gospels will be
carried in during the entrance procession by one of the lectors and put into the
clear holder on the altar. The Book of Gospels will stay in the church after Mass,
it does not process out. The lectors will not process out either.

Five minutes before Mass begins, meet in the Sacristy for prayer with Father and
the altar servers.
DURING MASS

Line up behind the servers for the Opening Procession at the beginning of Mass.
Make sure you or the other lector has the Book of the Gospels and holds it up
just below eye level.
When reaching the steps, the altar servers will bow first and head onto the
sanctuary. Lectors then move up to the steps and bow to the altar (Lector with
the Book of Gospels, bow only your head). Proceed to the altar immediately and

Page | 26

place the Book of the Gospels in the holder on the altar, then go to your seat in
the pew. The Lector without the Book of Gospels may proceed to your seat after
bowing to the altar.
Midway through the Opening Prayer, the first Lector will move to the area at the
bottom of the steps. When Father is finishing the Prayer, bow to the altar and
proceed to the ambo.
Let the room settle, before starting the first reading.
When beginning the first and second readings, your introductory phrase will be
A reading from At the conclusion of the reading, pause and say, The Word
of the Lord.
The first lector listed on the schedule will read the First Reading and
Intercessions. After your reading, you may return to your pew.
At the end of the Responsorial Psalm, the second Lector will pause and then
move to the ambo to begin the Second Reading.
When the Second Reading is complete, place the lectionary on the top shelf of
the ambo, then return to your pew.
Towards the end of the Creed, the first Lector is to move to the area at the
bottom of the steps. When Father is finishing the Creed, bow to the altar and
move up to the ambo.
Please make sure that you approach the bottom steps toward the end of the
Creed so that you are ready to read the intercessions as soon as Father is
finished with the opening prayer.

Page | 27

Turn toward Father when you finish reading the intercessions. After Father
completes the additional intercessions and closing prayer, go to your seat in the
pew.
SPECIAL NOTES

Special Instructions, when the responsorial psalm is read: After the First
Reading, pause and read the Responsorial Psalm. Upon completion of reading
the psalm, pause again and begin the Second Reading (unless otherwise
notified). This usually occurs at the 7:00 a.m. Masses on Holy Days.
Special Instructions, when the intercessions are moved to a different spot in the
Mass, you will be notified when this will occur and/or Father will give you
direction.
Lights and Sound System: You should be familiar on how to turn on the lights
and the sound system in case the need should ever arise.
You are responsible for getting substitutes in the event that you are unable to
lector as assigned. Please request a sub through Ministry Pro online or call Krista
Kelley at 463-5733, ext. 110 or email her at kkelley@blessedsacramentwl.org to
inform her of the name of your substitute, the day and time of Mass he or she is
substituting. If you have trouble getting a substitute, contact Pat Wilson at 4911097. If you have a sudden emergency or become ill suddenly and cant be here,
leave a message for or email Krista.
Try to get your substitutes in enough time to allow them sufficient time to prepare.
Many lectors like at least a week to prepare. If for some reason something comes
up at the last minute and you do not show up for your scheduled time, please let
Father or Wilma or Pat know why you missed. If you miss two times in a period of
1 year without obtaining a sub or letting us know what happened, you will be
asked to take a leave of absence and return when you can be more committed to
this most important ministry.

EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION

Founded upon her doctrine and expressed in practice, the teaching of the Church
and the legislation in Canon Law establishes that the ordinary minister of Holy
Communion is the Bishop, the Priest and the the Deacon. However, a non-ordained
member of the faithful, in cases of true necessity, may be deputed by the diocesan
bishop to act as an extraordinary minister to distribute Holy Communion outside of
liturgical celebrations, such as taking Holy Communion to the sick and the
homebound. They may also exercise this function at Eucharistic celebrations where
there are particularly large numbers of the faithful and which would be excessively
prolonged because of an insufficient number of ordained ministers to distribute
Holy Communion. In these circumstances they assist the ordinary ministers
(bishops, priests and deacons) in distributing Holy Communionxxxvii. In the practical
life of the parish, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are scheduled in
advance for particular Masses. Occasionally an extra priest or deacon may
sometimes be present. At that Mass, one or more of the scheduled extraordinary
ministers may not be needed because of the unexpected availability of an ordinary
minister. As an ordinary minister of Holy Communion, a bishop, priest or deacon
may assist the main celebrant distribute Holy Communion even if such a bishop,
priest or deacon is not present for the entire celebration of the Mass; in other
words, a bishop, priest or deacon who has not been present to celebrate the entire
Mass may approach the altar during the Sign of Peace or the Lamb of God and
assist in the distribution of Holy Communion as an ordinary minister. For each
ordinary minister that is added, one extraordinary minister will not be needed as
originally scheduled.
These extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion should not approach the
sanctuary before the priest has received Communion, and each extraordinary
minister is always to receive from the priest the vessel containing either species of
the Most Holy Eucharist for distribution to the faithful. When the distribution is
finished, if there remains any Precious Body or Blood in the chalices or ciboria,
both are to be given to the priest to consume or reserve in the Tabernacle; this

Page | 29

means that the extraordinary ministers ought no longer to consume any of the
Eucharist which remains in their sacred vessel.xxxviii
Finally, since this function is a supplementary and extraordinary function at
Eucharistic liturgies, an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion may only serve
as such once on a given Sunday and at one other time during the week.xxxix
INSTRUCTIONS

Please arrive 10 minutes before Mass begins. Go to the bulletin board, find the
Weekly Minister Schedule and circle your name indicating that you are present.
If you are substituting for someone, find the persons name that you are
substituting for, cross out their name and write in yours.
Take a cross from the hanger in the sacristy and wear it during Mass. Please be
willing to take the cross with the ribbon. If you take the cross with the ribbon,
take the tabernacle key from the drawer and keep it with you. You are most
welcome to join Father, the Lector and Altar Servers for prayer in the sacristy
five minutes before Mass.
During the Our Father, the minister with the ribboned cross is to go to the
Blessed Sacrament Chapel and get the ciborium (two if there are two). Before
leaving the church for the chapel, wait at the church door for the altar server
with the candle and the usher to assist you. The altar server with the candle will
lead you from the Chapel back into the church and onto the sanctuary where
you will place the ciborium/ciboria on the altar and then return to the foot of
the sanctuary to the right of the center aisle. Remain at the foot of the altar
until Father receives Communion.
The rest of the ministers will go to the foot of the altar at the Sign of Peace.
Please stand to the left of the ribboned minister. Please go IMMEDIATELY. If
you dont, some other minister may go up thinking that there arent enough

Page | 30

ministers. There should be a total of nine individuals giving out communion

(usually 1 priest and 8 ministers).
As soon as Father receives Communion, everyone bows to the altar and goes up
to the altar. The ribboned minister will go to the right of the altar while the rest
of the ministers go to the left.
The ribboned minister (#1) remains at the right side of the altar. Father will
give the ribboned minister communion under both forms. The ribboned
minister will immediately go and give Christs body to those who are unable to
come up for Communion (this includes those sitting in the front and in the
back). At 10:30, you will also give Christs body to the pianist. Your
Communion station will be at the center aisle to Fathers left.
The first minister (#8) in line at the left side of the altar will need to come to
Father to receive Communion under both forms and then will give Christs body
to the altar servers on the right side of the sanctuary. Your station will be at
that aisle. The second minister (#7) in line will come to Father to receive
Communion under both forms and then give Christs body to the rest of the
ministers and to the altar servers on the choir side. Your Communion station
will be at the choir side.
The rest of the ministers (#6, #5, #4. #3, #2) will be given a small chalice with
Precious Blood. The first minister (#6) with the Precious Blood is responsible for
offering the Precious Blood to the servers on the right side of the sanctuary and
will take the station where the servers kneel. There are two small chalices of
Precious Blood (#5, #4) to Fathers left and two (#3, #2) to Fathers right.
Minister #2 will offer the Precious Blood to the servers on the choir side. All
ministers proceed to their stations when Father moves down to the center aisle.
(For safety reasons, it may be best to stand on the floor when you are
distributing Communion.) It is perfectly fine to offer Precious Blood to those

Page | 31

sitting in front who were unable to come up for Communion. Please do not
carry the chalice throughout the church.
When you present Christs body, hold the host above the ciborium and make
eye contact as you say The Body of Christ. Give the communicant time to bow
and respond Amen. Once the communicant responds Amen, place the host
on the communicants hand or tongue. If it appears the communicant may not
be able to or does not appropriately prepare the Lords throne with his/her
hands, please offer to let the communicant receive on his/her tongue, which is
the preferred way.
When you present the small chalice of Precious Blood, make eye contact and say
The Blood of Christ. Give the communicant time to bow and respond Amen.
Once the communicant responds Amen, give them the small chalice to receive.
When you take the small chalice back, wipe the rim, inside and out. Turn the
small chalice a quarter turn for the next communicant. Use a clean spot on the
purificator for the next wipe.
Please be aware of what is going on at the other Communion stations. If your
Communion line has ended, look around to see where you might give additional
help.
Everyone is to remain at the altar until Communion is completed. Father will be
doing the initial purification.
Extraordinary Ministers with Christs Body and Extraordinary Ministers with
empty chalices are to place the ciboria and chalices on the corporal first. If you
have Precious Blood in your chalice after all parishioners have had an
opportunity to receive, take your chalice to Father after the others. Father will
either consume or ask if you will consume and offer you the Precious Blood.
When consuming the remainder from the chalice, please face away from the
congregation.
Page | 32

The person with the ribboned cross is responsible for taking the ciboria back to
the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. An altar server with a candle will lead you with
the consecrated hosts to the Chapel. Please take the ciboria straight to the
tabernacle. You do not bow to the altar, but remember to kneel/bow to the
tabernacle after placing the ciborium/ciboria in the tabernacle and locking the
tabernacle. (He/she should then take the key back to the front sacristy.)
Father will do the initial purifying at the altar. All (except the ribboned minister)
are to wait until he is completely finished. Everyone should help make sure that
everything makes it to the back sacristy, including the corporals, all the small
chalices, any empty ciboria, Fathers chalice and paten, the wine bottle, finger
bowl and cruets.
It is the responsibility of all the ministers to make sure that everything is
purified in the back sacristy. An assembly line would probably work best.
Duties in the back are as follows:
ALL MASSES

At the sacrarium
Particles from the corporals will need to be put into the sacrarium. Please fold to
be used for the next Mass.
All small chalices, Fathers chalice, paten and ciboria need one rinsing and the
water poured down the sacrarium.

At the sink
All small chalices, Fathers chalice, paten and ciboria need to be washed with soap
and water and dried. Rinse the finger bowl and dry.
If there is extra wine in the wine decanter/bottle it needs to be poured back into
the green wine bottle and thoroughly rinse or wash the wine decanter at the
regular sink; turn upside down on the counter.

Page | 33

If there is extra wine in the cruet, pour it back into the green wine bottle and rinse
or wash the cruet; turn upside down on the counter. If there is water left in the
cruet, pour it in the sink and turn it upside down on the counter.
Put small chalices and Fathers chalice in the cupboard. Put ciborium/ciboria,
paten and pall in the safe.
When you are ready to return to your pew, please walk to one of the entrances into
the church. Please remember to take your cross back to the front sacristy before
going home.
NOTES ON ACCIDENTS:

If you drop Christs Body on the floor, pick it up and put it on the corporal (white
linen cloth) on the altar. Make sure that you let Father know that it was dropped so
that he doesnt send it to the tabernacle.
If you spill Precious Blood on the floor, please cover it with your purificator and get
a clean purificator from the credence table. If there isnt one on the credence table
go to the back sacristy to get a clean one. This area will need to be cleaned after
you are finished distributing the precious blood. This can be done by wiping up
the spilled Precious Blood and then cleaning the area with a wet purificator. Both
should be rinsed in the sacarium. If you spill Precious Blood on a person, have
them wipe the area the best they can with your purificator. Ask the person to come
to the back sacristy after Mass to wash the area with a wet cloth. The cloth should
be rinsed in the sacrarium.
If a person would get sick when taking Christs Body, the host should be wrapped
in a purificator and taken to the back sacristy where it can be dissolved in a dish to
be poured down the sacrarium. Let the priest at Mass know should this happen.
NOTES ON SUBSTITUTES AND ABSENCES:

You are responsible for getting a substitute should you not be able to minister on a
given day. It can be done online through Ministry Pro or contact Krista Kelley at
463-5733, ext. 110, or email kkelley@blessedsacramentwl.org to inform her of the
name of your substitute, the day and time of Mass he or she is substituting. If you
have tried to find a substitute and have been unable to, call Krista at the above
number.
Page | 34

If for some reason something comes up at the last minute and you do not show up
for your scheduled time, please let Krista know that you realized that you missed.

GIFT BEARERS

What an honor it is to carry the wine, hosts and offerings to the priest at Mass for
consecration. Gift Bearers actively participate in the celebration of the Mass by
presenting the gifts of Bread and Wine at the altar. This is a beautiful and
significant part of the Mass.
INSTRUCTIONS

Arrive for Mass at least 10-15 minutes early. Go to the bulletin board, find the
Minister Schedule and circle your name indicating that you are present. If you
are substituting for someone, find the persons name that you are substituting
for, cross out their name and write yours.
Please notify the Usher(s) that you are the Gift Bearers for that Mass. This is very
important to the Ushers.
After the Ushers have started taking up the collection, go to the table where the
gifts are placed (behind the last pew). The collection basket needs to go up
first. The ushers usually take the collection basket.
Bow to the altar after you have given the gifts to the priest, before returning to
your pew.
Please note that if there is a second collection, you do not need to go to the gift
table until the ushers start taking up the second collection.
If you are unable to be the Gift Bearers for that Mass, please call for a
substitute. Please request a sub online through Ministry Pro or call Krista Kelley
at 463-5733, ext. 110 or email her at kkelley@blessedsacramentwl.org to
Page | 35

inform her of the name of your substitute, the day and time of Mass they are
substituting. If you are unable to find a substitute, please call Krista.
