ZENTANGLE HANDOUT Due September 16th by the end of class

A Zentangle is a form of Artistic meditation that uses repetitive

patterns to create images.
With the Zentangle Method, anyone can create beautiful images from repetitive patterns. It is easy to
learn and easy to do. And even though it is a specified series of steps, it results in a creative expression
that transcends its own rules.

Fun and Relaxing

Creating Zentangle art provides a fun and lighthearted way to relax and intentionally facilitate a shift in
focus and perspective. The Zentangle Method of creating art is unencumbered by dogma and cost which
can weigh on other approaches. Nevertheless, it is sufficiently structured and organized so you can enjoy
and benefit from an activity that otherwise might be considered whimsical.
Art concepts:
Implied texture: Drawn to look like the surface feels like something. For example: bumpy, scaled, brick,
satin, rocky, etc.
Line: A point moving through space. All lines have length, width and direction. Lines can look organic &
geometric.
Organic line: Follow the edges of no-name and free flowing shapes
Geometric lines: Follow the edges of named or formal shapes
Value: Differences in light and Dark. The closer you place your designs the darker that area of your
Zentangle will be
Contrast: The use of extreme differences to create emphasis. This will be achieved in this unit by having
light values next to dark values

Emphasis: A focal point in your artwork, where your eye is drawn to first. Often achieved by using
contrast.
Pattern: A series of objects that repeat.
Medium: Watercolor paper, Watercolor paint, Ball point Pen
