Cultural Artifact as Generative

Structure - Information Station
Introduction
While Design 1 and Design 2 during First Year introduced the
fundamentals of architecture within the context of nature
and sub-urban areas, Design 3 brings you to the more
challenging urban context. Issues of studies during this term
focuses on the aspects of culture and history while also
addressing questions of scale, measure, materiality,
methodology, program and mapping.
However, as much as the urban experience is determined by
grand tributes to art, culture and government, it is the
smaller, utilitarian structures of everyday existence that can
provide the most unexpected delights. Micro-architecture is
not so much about whimsy or experiment as about
necessity. The architectural objects that make a city or town
function and that every inhabitant uses to come into contact
with impart, and in some ways help to determine, the
character of the cities around the world.

Objective
The objectives of this assignment are:

To conceptualize architectural investigations and to

scrutinize ideas drawn from cultural sources.

To synthesize the conceptual and contextual phenomena

into a design.

To develop architectural spaces emphasizing scale and

measure relative to human perception.

To further apply / extend the micro-type design into the

macro-type.

To see drawing and modeling as technique that is, as

unique means of representing ideas and approximating
real conditions.

Project Procedure
This studio focuses on cultural artifacts; how a physical
construction at any scale may contain or reflect ideas. A
film, piece of literature, a piece of music, or a piece of
choreography that describes the local culture, is used as the
initial point of departure. Spatial issues emerging from
analysis and discussion of the artifact will program a set of
architectural elements that will be developed in an abstract
and volumetric space. Your task then is to develop this space
into an information station that will be used to offer
information of Sabahans culture (your cultural artifact) to
visitors.
For this, you are given a site; a lot in a green urban park
located in the heart Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
