Thequalityofurbanspaceisnotdeterminedsolelybytheformalandtechnologicallevel
ofthearchitecture,asitalsodependsonotherfactors,suchasexperientialreality,
tangibleandintangibleservices,objects,stores,etc.,and,moreimportantly,itdepends
onthelifepracticesofpeopleinhabitingthatspace.Nowadaysitisclearthatarchitecture
maynolongerbeviewedasaconceptthatcanencompassinitselftheentiresenseof
space,anditisbutanelementinabroadernetworkofrelationshipsbetweenavarietyof
subjectsnaturalandartificial,animateandinanimate,realandvirtualmakingupthe
livingandevolvingspaceofdesign.
Inthesenewandheterogeneousconditions,architecturaldesignresemblesmoreand
moretheworkofadirector:asortofcuratorialpracticethatentruststhequalityofspace
notmerelytoitsformalandpermanentcharacteristicsbutalsotoitsdynamic,
multidimensionalaspects,itspossibleuses,theexperienceandactivitiesofthepeople
whoinhabitthatspace.
Coursedescription
Courseactivitieswillconsistofintensiveplanninganddesignworkcenteringaround
possiblenewlayoutsforpublicurbanspace,forwhichselectedareasandtherelative
cartographicmaterialswillbesupplied.
Inlaboratoryactivitiesgreatimportanceisattachedtoafirsthandknowledgeofthe
projectareaandthepossibilitytoaddressrealproblemsandexchangeviewswithpeople
livingintheareasofinterest.Forthisreason,laboratoryworkwillfocusonprojectsfor
areasinandaroundMilanandtheircurrentnecessities.
Workingmethod
Theproposedapproachcontemplatesacombineduseofdifferentskills,fromplanningto
architecturaldesign,frominteriordesigntoinstallation,utilityandlandscapedesign.The
studentswillbeflankedbyinstructorsfromtheaforementioneddisciplines,whowillassist
theminconducingdirectexperienceswiththecityareasandthelifethattakesplace
withinthem,boththroughobservationandthroughhandsonworkandpracticesessions
consistentwiththecomplexscenariosaffectingthequalityofspaceintodaysurban
environments.Inthelaboratory,newdesignapproacheswillbetestedout,whereby
traditionalmasterplanandplanvolumetricdesignmodalitiesaresupplementedwith
resourcesandstrategiesthatviewacityprojectasasituational,multicentredand
inclusiveworkinprogress.
Surveysandpracticalworkinthefieldwillbeconductedinalternationwithclassroom
workwherethestudentswillbeassistedbytheirteachersandbytutorsspecialisinginthe
variousdesigndisciplines,fromplanningtoarchitecturalandlandscapedesign.
Thestudentswillproducebothgraphicmaterialsdescribingtheprojectandscalemodels
ofpartsand/ortheentireproject

Thecoursewillbedeliveredaccordingtothreeparallelmodalities:
Lecturesandseminarsheldbyfacultymembersandguestlecturers
Practicesessionsinthefield,toconductsurveysandgettoknowthecontext,aswellas
toidentifydesignthemesandresources(movement,balance,sound,etc.)
Projectconception,developmentandproduction.

Groupsof3/4studentswilldevelopprojectsthatwillbeevaluatedaccordingtothe
followingaspects:qualityoftheideainaccordancewiththeprinciplesandmethods
proposedabilityofargumentationandrepresentationqualityofproductsandtheir
formalization,suchasdrawings,models,movieslearningabilityingroup
collaboration.
Duringthecourse,anumberoflearningprogresscheckswillbescheduledand
evaluatedandtheresultswillbetakenintoaccountindeterminingtheoutcomeofthe
finalexam.Forthefinalexam,thestudentswillsubmitthefollowingmaterials:DESIGN
DRAWINGS,acollectionofPREPARATORYSTUDIES,SCALEMODELS.
