PREFACE EXPLANATORY

T HE

numerous Onental Tenns occurrmg m the Filth Report and 1t's

Appendix, have been adopted from most of the languages current throughout INDIA -from Aralnc, Perszan, Sanslmt, Hzndustany, Bengaly, Telmga.
Tamu~

Canara, and Malabar 1 and a few from Turlczsh and Malay In spellmg
'
'
them, httle attention has been prud to correctneqs or consistency Tlus has
ansen, m some degree, from there bemg no fixed rules for the notation of Onental
terms m the letters of our 1mperfect alphabet, every one spelling according to Jus
ear' but

ma greater degree, from the Ignorance or mattentwn of the Native

clerks, employed m the pubhc offices m India to copy the transactions of the
East-India Company.

To gtve an instance or the confusion occaswned from

these crrcumstances, the word wh1eh, accordmg to 1t's form and sound m Arabzc,
should be wntten Mahdl (A j~..c<), the first vowel short, and the last long,
occurs under no less than e1ght d.Uferent shapes, not one of willch

and Molzaul.

A great many {)ther mstanoes occur where the

vanously spelt, and often m the srune page

In collectmg and arrangmg the words herem to be explruned, 1t hence

became necessary that they should be exillb1ted under therr vanous spellings,
however mcorrect, JUSt as they appear m the prznted Report and Appendix, but

m order to remedy tl1e evil above complruned of, an attempt has been made to
trace each word to 1t's source, to exh1b1t 1t m It's genume character, as far as
Types could be procured for that purpose, and to convey It's true pronunciation 111 the ltal1c character, upon a plan 9f n9tatJ.on dlfferwg but httle from that

PREFACE EXPLANATORY

Ia1d down by Sir WII.LrAlll JoNEs m the begmmng of the first volume of the
A$lallC Transactrom, and whtch has been successfully followed by others m the
subsequent volumes of that work.

Th1s plan, wluch has at least umformtty to

recommend 1t. cons1sts chtefly m avmd1ng the use of the double vowels ee and oo,
by subsbtul:lng for them

and u With the Ita/zan pronunc1at1on, and m

d1st1ngUJshmg the long vowels from the short by the use of the acute accent.

Thus a, .e, ' o, u, are to be pronounced short, and

a, e, i, b, u,

long, and

both as by the Itahans.

Many words m tlus Glossary could not be traced to thetr ongm , and
a few occur m the Report and .Appendix, which wz1l not be found m the
Glossary, because, neither thetr etymology, nor their tecluncal apphcatJ.on, could
be satlsfactonly explamed

It has also been part of the plan to giVe the radteal

and common acceptatlon of every term, as well as the qffiaal and techlllCal
apphcatJ.on of 1t , whenever tlus, or any other part of the scheme has failed,
