21st Century (2001)

21st-century classical music is art music, in the contemporary
classical tradition, that has been produced since the year 2000.
Some elements of the previous century have been retained,
including post-modernism, polystylism and eclecticism, which
seek to incorporate elements of all styles of music irrespective
of whether these are "classical" or notthese efforts represent
a slackening differentiation between the various musical
genres. The combination of classical music and multimedia is a
notable practice in the 21st century; the Internet, alongside its
related technology, are important resources in this respect. The
number of important female composers has also increased.
Polystylism (or musical eclecticism) is a growing trend in the
21st century.[1] It combines elements of diverse musical genres
and compositional techniques into a unified and coherent body
of works. Composers have often started their musical career in
one discipline and have later migrated to or embraced others,
while retaining important elements from the former discipline.
In some cases, a composer now labelled "classical" may have
started out in another discipline. A specific label for John
Zorn's music is difficult to choose: he started out as a
performance artist and moved through various genres including
jazz, hardcore punk, film music, and classical, and often
embraces Jewish musical elements. All of these diverse styles
appear in his works.
Julian Anderson combines elements from many different
musical genres and practices in his works. Elements of
modernism, spectral music and electronic music are combined
with elements of the folk music of Eastern Europe and the

resulting works are often influenced by the modality of Indian

ragas.
Tansy Davies's music also fuses elements of pop and classical
music. Prince and Iannis Xenakis are both major influences.
Multimedia and music
The work In Seven Days (2008), by Thomas Ads, was
composed for a piano, an orchestra, and six video screens. The
video segments were created by Tal Rosner, Ads's civil
partner.
Judith Weir's opera Armida was premiered on television, rather
than on stage. Channel 4 commissioned the work in 2005. The
libretto, also written by Weir, updates Torquato Tasso's 1581
epic poem, setting it in a modern Middle-East conflict which
alludes to but never specifically mentions the Iraq War. Weir's
opera calls for props that could not be used practically in an
opera house, such as a helicopter.
In 2008, Tan Dun was commissioned by Google to compose
Internet Symphony No. 1"Eroica" to be performed
collaboratively by the YouTube Symphony Orchestra. This
work used the internet to recruit orchestra members and the
final result was compiled into a mashup video, which
premiered worldwide on YouTube.
Technology in music production
With the growing popularity of the home computer and the vast
improvements in music production applications during the 21st
century, home-based composers and performers are no longer
limited to the facilities of designated recording studios. Though
the technology was available in the 1990s, home computers

were not capable of replicating the functionality of a

professional production facility. At that time computer
processors were slow, internal memory was small, hard disk
storage capacities were limited, and data access times were too
slow for serious multitrack recording work if using only a
single device. Today's computer workstations have vastly
improved performance capabilities, with data storage space in
the region of several terabytes, processors with multiple cores,
and onboard memory measured in gigabytes. Home users can
now quickly and easily sample, record, and produce their own
music using their own home recording studios, and promote it
via the internet.

There are numerous types of applications involved in music

production. While many will allow the user to play musical
notation back via MIDI (through either external electronic
instruments or internal "virtual instruments"), some of them are
dedicated solely to notation, others are dedicated solely to live
performance, yet others are dedicated solely to the production
(i.e. recording) process itself, while a few present all these
capabilities in one package. Many of these applications have
capabilities to store live sound in WAV, MP3, or MP4 format
(which do not involve notation) and often have functions which
can transform the sound (changing the pitch, stretching the
sound, merging sounds together, adding effects, and so on). Of
course, there are widely used applications which are dedicated
to recording sound in digital formats, and some offer these
transforming functions.

Used to generate power, drive and excitement.

Elements of Music in the 20th Century

It is 133 keys large. These are broken down to 120 keys on the
main keyboard and 12 percussion keys on the lower part of the
instrument. One key for muting. The amazingly expressive part
of the keys is that they have a after touch sensitivity on them.

the instrument stands upright like a upright bass combined with

a bass oboe. It comes with a leather strap so you can use it
much like a portable guitar/bass. It also has a 300mm
retractable floor spike with removable rubber foot, should you
use it like a upright bass.

The Breath Controller

The breath controller that looks like a bass oboe neck
extending to the mouth piece. The mouth piece can be
removed and replaced so you can have your own piece (like a
traditional mouthpiece for a instrument).
The Micropone Preamp
There is also a Microphone input/preamp that allows one to
sing into the instrument. 24 bit @ 96k A/D. has a 48v phantom
power on it. Also has a 26db pad for those heavy yellers i
suppose. The catch though of the preamp is it only allows for
certain mics and requires custom wiring for each micrphone.
Strip Controller
On each sides of the instrument is a 480mm long strip
controller. this allows for those long expressions perahps for
shutting down a filter or bringing one up.
The Base Station
A black box that sits on the floor. This is the unit that the
Eigenharp connects to. it has a USB 2 interface to connect to
your computer for control much like any controller on the
market. It also has two inputs for foot switches. The video on
the websites shows how these foot controllers can be used.

Sounds or in this case sound fonts

Apparently you can load your own sounds into this unit which
is described as AU plugins and midi instruments but it comes
with its own software instruments that model a cello, clarienet
and a Synth engine. See the website for more information.

War is symbolized by the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989

The 20th century was a time of experimentation in music. As

travel became much more assessable cities became more
cosmopolitan which lead to the development of new types of
music. The recording industry has heavily influenced 20th and
21st century music. Because of the recording industry various
types of music became easily disseminated and various musical
genres now prevalent in the 21st century began to emerge.

Classical

The 20th century was a time of experimentation in

classical music. Composers during the beginning of the
20th century rejected what they considered the
harmonic excess of the late 19th century romanticism.
Although some composers chose to compose in older
styles many sought to find their own way to simplify
music. Types of early 20th century classical music
included impressionism, expressionism and neoclassicism. Minimalism, which is a style heavily
influenced by far eastern music, gained a popularity in
the 1960's and beyond. In the 21st century many serious

of Mississippi and Louisiana. The blues developed out of the

African American field work songs, gospel songs and rhythmic
dance that were prevalent after the civil war. After the turn of
the 20th century many regional styles of blues were found
throughout the American south. The blues would be a key
ingredient in jazz and rock music.

21st century

Jazz

At the beginning of the 20th century New Orleans was

one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the United States. The
music we know today as Jazz was a fusion of many musical
styles including blues, Latin American music, and European art
music such as opera. The earliest jazz musicians were African
Americans but it was a white jazz band, the Dixie Land Jass
Band, that made the first jazz recordings and brought jazz to an
international audience. The classic New Orleans style of jazz
which was prevalent until the depression, evolved into swing
music of the '30s and '40s. Since the second world war many
different styles of jazz emerged including Bebop, Cool Jazz
and Hard Bop and Fusion.
Blues

Blues is a genre of music as well as a form. The most

common form of blues is the 12 bar blues although 8 and 16
bar blues are also common. The 12 bar blues refers to the
number of measures of each theme or chorus. The blues
developed in the southern U.S. particularly in the delta region

Rock N' Roll

Rock N' Roll developed from several musical styles

including country, rhythm and blues and classic blues.
Although the origins off rock n' roll cannot be traced to one
single person, it is generally accepted by historians that rock n'
roll began in 1954. Beginning in 1954, disc jockeys started to
play shows which were aimed at white teenage audiences.
These shows featured music by Chuck Berry, Little Richard
and a little it later Elvis Presley. Rock N' Roll spread to Europe,
especially England, during the 1960s. Now in the 21st century
there are many sub genres of rock n' roll but they can all be
traced to the styles developed by artists such as Chuck Berry.
