AF Essay Rough Draft
Pigs in a blanket are a favorite American snack. However in animal farm by George
Orwell, pigs cant sleep in a bed until they changed that law for their own purposes. The original
law was animals cant sleep in a bed. However the pigs added with sheets. George Orwell
wanted to make it clear that in the allegory animal farm, that the pigs would do what they needed
to do or say what they needed to say in order to get what they want. The Russians during these
revolutionary times would also do and say what they needed to say in order to get what they
want or need. In order to convince the animals into letting the pigs sleep in a bed, Squealer
persuades the animals by using logos and fear.

Squealer uses logos to define what a bed really was because he wanted to manipulate the
animals into allowing the pigs to have the beds. Squealer says, A pile of Straw is a bed properly
regarded. (p. 49) He was trying to define what a bed was say that there was no difference
between a pile of straw and a bed. He also was trying to prove that the pigs needed the bed,
because they are so important. He used Logos because it can be very hard to argue with someone
that is using statistics. Squealer uses Logos to his advantage and convinces the rest of the farm
that beds are okay because they are no different than a pile of straw, just that pigs find them
comfortable and need them because of all the brainwork they have to use.

Squealer uses fear to his advantage to make sure that the pigs obtain the beds. He used
fear by having the dogs at his side and mentions Jones would come back if the pigs cant get
there much needed comfortable sleep. He uses Jones to scare the animals, and to tell them they
need the beds to continue leading the animals. Squealer says, Surely none of you wishes to see

Jones back? (P 49) When Squealer mentions Jones it makes the animals fearful because they
dont want him back. It also makes it hard to argue with because he is saying surely you guys
dont want Jones back? which would make it very hard for animals to object without feeling
stupid or alone. Squealer uses Fear to his advantage to get what he wants, which is the beds. Not
only is he using a form of Pathos, he is using frightening dogs that are as Fierce as Wolves to
shut up the animals and induce the fear (pathos).

In order to convince the animals into letting the pigs sleep in a bed, Squealer persuades
the animals by using logos and fear. Squealer uses logos, and fear to let the pigs sleep in beds. If
the animals objected there would have been punishment or more fear inducting speeches. The
pigs where self-serving and ignorant towards the rest of the animals. In many ways this allegory
of the Russian revolution was true. The leaders of the Russian revolution such as Stalin were
pigs after all.
