Lesson Plan

Day: Monday

Date: 15/08/16

Subject: Chemistry

Time: Period 4

Class: 10 General

Topic: Chemical Reactions

Students Prior Knowledge and Experience:

Understanding of atomic/molecular structure, with an introductory understanding of chemical bonding?

All prior Chemistry content learned through years 7-9

Learning Purposes:
Outcomes should be concise, observable and attainable:
Students will differentiate between chemical
reactions and physical reactions, using
examples.
Students will define the traits of a chemical
reaction (irreversible, chemical bonds broken,
new substances formed).

Preparation and Resources:

White board and markers

Computer/laptop
Projector for video & powerpoint
Student workbooks
Spare pens
Vinegar, baking soda, candles and matches for
demonstration
Printed off worksheets
Chemistry word search

Lesson Plan

Curriculum Content Description:

Chemical change involves substances reacting

to form new substances (ACSSU225)
Identify questions and problems that can be
investigated scientifically and make predictions
based on scientific knowledge (ACSIS139)

1. Brainstorm words that people think of when they hear chemical reaction, write up a class summary on
board.
2. Begin powerpoint - define WHAT a chemical reaction is and what traits they have. Students write these
definitions in their books for reference.
3. Continue remainder of powerpoint - show examples of different types of chemical reactions, using
animated GIFS, and discuss everyday reactions. Baking a cake example.
4. Watch slow mo airbag video and discuss.
5. Get students to think up an example themselves, and explain why it happens - think, pair and share.

Show baking soda + vinegar demonstration, put out candle flames using CO2.
Discuss what just happened in the reaction. Write up chemical equation and get students to copy into
their books.
How do you think we could measure reaction rate? Discuss factors that would affect a chemical reaction
Continue powerpoint, get students to take notes on concentration, catalyst, adding energy, etc.
Explain law of conservation during reaction rates. Get students to take note.
If there is time remaining, photocopy chemistry wordsearch until end of class for those students who
have finished their worksheets and note taking.

Pack up!

Lesson Evaluation:
-Students were mostly very engaged with gifs, video and practical demonstration majority
visual learners
-Not very willing to put up hands and answer questions build up their background
knowledge more. Start with easier questions and guide them to answers.
-Good to break up the note taking with video and demo. Some were unable to focus on
writing for too long.
-Dont allow talking during video pause and wait if need be
-Include a recap or summary of all content learned at the end of lesson, and if time remains,
introduce what we will be doing next lesson and how it was related to todays content
