Boult to Shami, out Caught by Matt Henry!! Takes on the short ball and hooks...

it is in the air
and can Henry get there at long leg? And he has taken that. What a catch that is. Boult has his
eyes wide open in amazement and then claps that effort. Shami can't believe that it has been
taken. He hooked it in the air and Henry sprinting to his right flung himself and took it with both
hands. Had to stretch full length sideways and did so beautifully. Then went to ground. Fantastic
catch to end the innings. Shami c Matt Henry b Boult 14(14) [4s-3]
104.1
Boult to Shami, FOUR, the dhols start beating. More misery for the visitors. Boult has a wry
smile on his face. It was on a length and on the stumps, Shami got a thick edge on the back foot
defence, wide of the gully and it was in the air. Very catchable but in the vacant area. No third
man and four more
102.1
Wagner to Shami, FOUR, helped down to fine leg. Angled in short on the stumps, Shami in his
own way, just swivelled and played it down. The ball raced away. This is frustrating for the
visitors. Kohli in his whites is very happy and is seen clapping from the dressing room
102
Santner to W Saha, SIX, magnificent shot to get to fifty. Well-deserved too. Has battled it out
there, took blows on his bicep and ribs, but hasn't thrown it away. These are crucial runs. Saha
hasn't impressed me as a batsman in Tests, but this innings has shown what a fighter he is. Makes
room and then tonks the tossed up delivery on the stumps over long-off. Clean strike and it went
all the way. Ashwin and Jinks Rahane lead the applause from the dressing room. Shami pats Saha
on the back and the local boy soaks in the adulation from the crowd
101.5
Santner to W Saha, FOUR, and Saha goes over mid-on. Clears his front leg and then there is a
free extension of his arms, lofted over mid-on's head and it is a boundary. Just a hit away from a
half-century now
100.2
Wagner to W Saha, FOUR, and now gets four. Helped by a full toss from Wagner, he got
forward and creamed it, there was long-off and deep cover. Bisected them to perfection. Timing
took it away from the fielders
100

Santner to Shami, FOUR, nice late cut. For four. Trifle short and flat outside off, Shami rocked
back and cut that hard. Well wide of backward point and raced away. Shami gets off the mark
with a couple
99.4
Santner to Bhuvneshwar, out Lbw!! And he has given that out. Has made amends for that howler
last ball. Drifted in nicely, pitched around middle and beat the defending bat of Bhuvneshwar.
Who played down the wrong line and was slow to react. Loud appeal again and Tucker had his
finger up. No inside edge and that made Tucker's job easier. Santner lets out a sigh of relief. Only
one more wicket to go now and with that wicket the players take drinks as well. Bhuvneshwar
lbw b Santner 5(11) [4s-1]
97.5
Santner to W Saha, FOUR, fine shot. The key was to get to the pitch of that ball, used his feet
and then got close to the pitch of that before thumping it over cover. In the air and away she went
97
Wagner to Bhuvneshwar, FOUR, good square drive and Bhuvneshwar is off the mark with that
shot. Full and enticing the shot, Bhuvneshwar got forward and opened the bat face to get it past
the backward point fielder
96.2
Wagner to Jadeja, out Caught by Matt Henry!! And that's that. So easy. Fine leg and deep
backward square were there for the short ball. Jadeja knew what was coming and still found the
fielder to perfection. What placement that is. Short delivery on the stumps, he couldn't keep the
pull down and Matt Henry reverse-cups the ball close to his chest. Wagner roars and pumps his
fists. Doesn't take long for him to get fired up. It is the left-arm quick who has got the
breakthrough. One ball was all it took for the tactic to come off. Jadeja c Matt Henry b
Wagner 14(31) [6s-1]
95.3
Santner to Jadeja, SIX, didn't take long, did it? Jadeja uses his feet and then heaves high and
handsome over deep mid-wicket. Santner isn't impressed and has a big smile on his face, while
shaking his head, there was a lot of height on that and plenty of distance too
91
Boult to Jadeja, leg byes, FOUR, went for the inswinger and drifted it down leg, clips the pad
and runs away. Four legbyes
89.3

Matt Henry to W Saha, FOUR, a little steer and wide of the diving gully. Intentionally opened
the bat face and got it to ground. Once it beat the fielder, it raced away as there is no third man.
Will release some of the pressure built up by that misjudgement earlier in the over
86.2
Boult to W Saha, FOUR, beautiful cover drive. Boult looks for swing by pitching it up fuller
outside off, cover is vacant and Saha gets forward to open the face on the cover drive. The ball
raced away and that gets the home crowd going. Remember he is a local boy
85
Boult to W Saha, FOUR, Saha looks to get a move on. The last recognized proper batsmen are
out there and Saha capitalizes on another overpitched delivery well outside off to just about open
the face of his sword and cream it through the covers, very square this time
84.3
Boult to W Saha, FOUR, showing the maker's name. His sponsors would be mighty proud as he
pounces on this fullish half volley and punches it courtesy a straight bat down the ground, holds
the pose for the cameras as well
84
Matt Henry to Ashwin, out Lbw!! He perishes. Perishes to the well planned sucker delivery, after
a shorter one, Henry spears it fuller and gets it to zip back in as well. Ashwin, who is well across
his stumps looking for the flick, is a tad late and the ball whizzes past the blade to ping him on
the front leg in front of leg. The ball had another four feet to travel, would it have gone down
leg? Well your guess is as good as mine. India digging a deeper hole for themselves and are well
aided by the Kiwi pacers. Ashwin lbw b Matt Henry 26(33) [4s-4]
83.5
Matt Henry to Ashwin, FOUR, lovely sound of the bat and an even better sight to the eye. Gets
back and stands tall to punch this delivery off the back foot. Just a tap and he doesn't even bother
jogging around
82.2
Boult to W Saha, byes, FOUR, what is going on? Eden of 1996. Each ball is doing something
very different. Looking to take evasive action was Saha and BJ was completely foxed as the ball
pinged a crack and zipped well away down leg. Byes against his name
79.5

Jeetan Patel to W Saha, SIX, that's a nice way to get going, saw the flight, gets forward and
shovels it with the turn, clears the deep mid-wicket fence by a long way
78.4
Santner to Ashwin, FOUR, lovely shot, this is the best of the lot! Tossed up outside off, Ashwin
gets well forward, presents the full face of the bat and caresses it past extra cover for a boundary
78.2
Santner to Ashwin, FOUR, that's unlucky for Santner, pushed through flatter and wider outside
off, Ashwin was attempting the late-cut, gets a bottom edge that goes through Taylor at first slip
78.1
Santner to Ashwin, FOUR, lovely shot, flatter delivery on the stumps, Ashwin rocks back and
flicks it in front of square on the on-side, Henry gave the chase and pulled it back, but takes the
ball along with him over the ropes
77.4
Jeetan Patel to Rahane, out Lbw!! Big wicket for New Zealand, second wicket for Jeetan! But
was the ball missing leg-stump? India can't complain though, but on replays - it looks like
Rahane was trapped right in front. Rahane falls after a valuable knock, a judgemental error and
that has cost him his wicket. This was pushed through flatter and on middle, turned slightly into
the batsman, Rahane was caught in his crease as he stayed back, struck bang in front of legstump. The height wasn't an issue either, struck Rahane just below the knee-roll. Umpire Tucker's
finger went up straightaway, celebrations in the New Zealand camp. Rahane lbw b Jeetan Patel
77(157) [4s-11]
73.1
Jeetan Patel to Rohit, out Caught by Latham!! Lapse in concentration and Rohit can't get a start
at the Eden Gardens, the crowd is hushed into silence and India have lost half their side. First
wicket for Jeetan since 2013, he's chuffed to bits. Coming to the ball, this was tossed up on off
and spun into Rohit, he was back in his crease as he looked to work it towards the on-side,
doesn't counter the turn, gets a thick inside edge which lobbed to Latham at FSL, off his thighpad. He dives forward, gets his fingers underneath and holds on. Rohit c Latham b Jeetan Patel
2(12)
72.4
Santner to Rahane, no run, Rohit survives a run-out, but he seems to have hurt himself while
doing so. He's yelping in pain, grimacing all along, has he done his left shoulder? The physio is
out in the middle, Rahane looks worried as well. Coming back to the ball, this was tossed up on
off, Rahane lunged forward on the defensive push, gets an inside edge behind square on the on-

side. Rohit wanted a single, Rahane wasn't so sure and turned his back on his partner. Rohit was
more than halfway down the track, he turned around and scampered towards his end. Watling
went after the ball, gathered and shied at the bowler's end, the throw was way off target though,
Rohit put in the dive to save himself, in the process, the bat jarred onto the turf and he landed
heavily on his left shoulder. All seems fine now though and action is about to resume
70.5
Jeetan Patel to Rahane, FOUR, wrong line from Patel, and he pays the penalty, drifts one well
down the leg-side, Rahane gets forward, turns his wrists along and glances it fine, beats short
fine and rolls away to the fence
69.1
Wagner to Pujara, out Caught by Guptill!! No hundred for Pujara once again, but he gets a big
round of applause from the Eden Gardens crowd. The ploy of having three men in front of the
wicket has worked wonders for Taylor. This was the cutter from Wagner, full and wide outside
off, lured Pujara into the drive. He was in no control over the shot, hence, couldn't keep the drive
down, straight to Guptill at short extra cover, he doesn't drop those and New Zealand celebrate
breaking what looked like a threatening stand. Pujara c Guptill b Wagner 87(219) [4s-17]
67.3
Wagner to Rahane, FOUR, edged and four, now, this was a proper edge, maybe Rahane didn't
go hard on the shot, the ball found his outside edge and flew past the fielder at wide slip, no need
to run for those. Runs coming in a hurry for India
67.2
Wagner to Rahane, FOUR, risky but four, this was full and wide outside off, looking to make
Rahane drive, he had three men in the cover region for the airy shot, two men behind for the
edge, Rahane did neither, didn't get on top of the bounce, as a result, the weight wasn't there on
the shot, slices it in the air and finds the gap behind square on the off-side
67
Jeetan Patel to Pujara, FOUR, Pujara shows how it's done! Another rank long hop from Jeetan,
Pujara makes room and cuts it in front of square on the off-side, no one at cover-point and the
ball rolls away to the fence in a hurry
66.2
Jeetan Patel to Rahane, FOUR, lovely shot, little shimmy down the track by Rahane, gets close
to the pitch of the ball and clips it in front of square on the on-side, beats mid-wicket and the
man running to his left in the deep

65.3
Wagner to Pujara, FOUR, back-to-back boundaries for Pujara, this was the cutter from Wagner,
Pujara waits on it, opens the face of the bat at the last moment and guides it to the right of gully,
beat the diving fielder and rolled away to the fence
65.2
Wagner to Pujara, FOUR, lovely shot, short and wide from Wagner, Pujara gets on top of the
bounce, gets the placement right, behind square on the off-side, beats the infield and rolls away
to the ropes
64.4
Boult to Pujara, FOUR, that's easy pickings for Pujara, short and on his hips, all he had to do
was to get some bat on that, he does so and the ball rolls away to the fence
60.2
Santner to Rahane, FOUR, lovely shot, the attempted quicker delivery from Santner, ends up
dropping it short and on the stumps, Rahane rocks back, rolled his wrists around and whips it to
the right of mid-wicket, beat the fielder and rolls away to the fence
60
Matt Henry to Rahane, 2 runs, fifty for Rahane, and his wife leads in giving him a good round
of applause, this was short and well outside off, Rahane stands tall and cracks it in front of
square on the off-side, the fielder at deep point gets across and makes the stop, can't prevent the
second run though, 9th Test fifty for Rahane
56.2
Santner to Pujara, FOUR, just that iota of width provided and Pujara looks to break the shackles
with a punishing late square cut. Adjusts brilliantly to the low bounce with a crouch and ensures
that he gets it past backward point. That's all he had to do, the outfield did the rest
55.1
Jeetan Patel to Rahane, FOUR, glorious! Copy book shot as Rahane gently strides out to the
pitch of the delivery, clears his front leg and caresses it through the covers
53.4
Boult to Rahane, FOUR, that is more like the Rahane we know. Pounces on the short of length
delivery that kept coming to him at serious pace with a slash of the flat bat, whistles away into
the fence

50.5
Jeetan Patel to Pujara, FOUR, much better! Gallops down the track, gets to the pitch of the ball
and whips it with some serious use of his iron wrists past a diving mid-wicket
50.3
Jeetan Patel to Rahane, 1 run, so very Rahane! After getting beaten, he decides to skip down the
wicket, barely gets close to the pitch of the delivery but still goes through with his lofted hoick.
Only to miscue it high in the air that balloons just over a diving Bracewell running back from
mid-on. Fortune
46.5
Wagner to Pujara, FOUR, not a bad way to get to your personal milestone. Gets to his third
half-century in three innings in this series and his tenth overall. Is merely continuing his Duleep
Trophy stretch over the rest of the country. On top of the bounce once again early as he dabs it
courtesy a cross blade, gets it past the diving gully
45.1
Santner to Rahane, FOUR, as good as it gets! Rahane reads the length to perfection as he rocks
back after transferring his weight back to perfection before slapping it off the angled blade,
pierces the off-side gap to perfection
43.2
Santner to Rahane, FOUR, he missed out a few overs ago against Santner when he cut a short
ball straight to cover, this time he plays a little late, meaning he placed it squarer, more through
cover-point, no chance for the fielder
35.4
Santner to Pujara, FOUR, nicely done by Pujara. Flighted delivery from Santner, but the line is
on the leg stump, Pujara steps out, covers the line after getting to the pitch of the ball and then
flicked it past the diving mid-on fielder for four
34
Matt Henry to Rahane, FOUR, overpitched and put away, the idea was right from Henry to go
full, because Rahane wasn't comfortable against the short stuff. He wanted to test Rahane's foot
movement, but the Mumbaikar did well to lean forward and drive it through mid-off
32.5

Jeetan Patel to Rahane, FOUR, and a rare poor delivery from Jeetan Patel. Been so tight with his
line after lunch. With Rahane stepping out twice in this over, he wanted expecting the batsman to
charge once again and bowled wide outside off to bring the stumping chance into play, but this
time Rahane stayed put and creamed a cover-drive off the front foot
32
Matt Henry to Pujara, FOUR, Matt Henry gets greedy and concedes a boundary, Test cricket is
all about patience and a delivery close to the off stump would have been so nice to round off the
over. Again the attempted inswinger, probably the frustration got to him, wanted to try hard, but
just sprayed it on middle and leg, which allowed Pujara to easily flick it away through midwicket for four
27.4
Matt Henry to Pujara, FOUR, lovely hit, looked so good. This remodelled Pujara is great to
watch. Everytime there's a scoring opportunity, he goes for it. This time it was a short of length
delivery outside off stump, Pujara was standing tall and right on the top of the bounce as he
drove that beautifully off the back foot through point
26
Boult to Pujara, leg byes, FOUR, oh! That has conked Pujara right on the helmet. Good short
ball from round the wicket, angled in and Pujara just turned his head, offered the ball a free
pathway to hit and it clattered into the protective gear and rushed off to the fine leg fence. Pujara
was late in moving away from the line and wore one. Watling chased the ball but it ran away.
Tucker rightly signals it as legbyes. For now Pujara is seen chatting to Rahane and looks to be
fine. No help required from the physio
24.1
Jeetan Patel to Pujara, FOUR, he is so strong with the square cut. Jeetan Patel drops it a bit short
and Pujara latches on. Goes back and cuts, beats the sweeper to his left. The fielder didn't get
there in time
21.4
Boult to Kohli, out Caught by Latham!! For the umpteenth time in his Test career, Kohli has
chased a wide ball outside off and got out. They say you shouldn't be chasing some things in life.
Balls outside off - in Test matches when there is some help for the seamers - are definitely one
which must be added into that category. Kohli played a drive earlier in the over where he was
playing well away from the body. Hands reaching out. This is a far worser shot. Well outside off,
for some reason he chased at it and sliced it to the right of gully. A sharp catch as the ball was
travelling and Latham cupped it with both hands. On the dive sideways. Kohli bent his knee and
was trying to square drive but got it all wrong. While walking back, he gestures that he should've

left it alone. Too late. Boult breaks into a wide grin and is enveloped in a hug by Ronchi. The
move to bring Boult back has worked. Kohli c Latham b Boult 9(28) [4s-1]
21.1
Boult to Kohli, FOUR, that's Kohli at his best. Not quite fully forward, just a front foot press and
then times the drive. Wide of short cover and beats mid-off to his left. Replays show that Kohli
was playing well away from his body, but it came right off the middle of the bat. When it doesn't
move from a fuller length, Kohli's drives away from the body carry less risk
20.3
Jeetan Patel to Pujara, FOUR, Ross Taylor is wrong-footed at slip and the edge goes to his
left, he was moving to his right as he saw Pujara shape for the back foot steer. It held its line and
Pujara got a thick edge. Had Ross been in his conventional position, would've gone straight to
him. And he doesn't drop many, Pujara very lucky to get away. Jeetan Patel is very disappointed
and covers his mouth with his hands
12.2
Wagner to Pujara, FOUR, even though Wagner did get a hand to that, it ran away to the fence.
Full on the stumps, whipped wristily by Pujara and it ricocheted off Wagner's hands, wide of
mid-on. Bottom hand into play by Pujara
11.2
Matt Henry to Vijay, out Caught by Watling!! Nicked and gone. Matt Henry went wide of the
crease after being given an official warning and angled it in, Vijay had to play as it was in line
with the stumps, but couldn't cover the line properly, a thick outside edge and easily held by
Watling moving to his right. A big wicket for Matt Henry and the Kiwis for Vijay is a very
stodgy customer and can dig in for long periods. Enter Kohli. Vijay c Watling b Matt Henry
9(29) [4s-2]
10.4
Wagner to Pujara, FOUR, low full toss outside off, Pujara had to hit the gap and does so. Timing
the drive wide of cover. Even though the bat face closed on impact, he got enough on that to beat
the fielder
9.2
Matt Henry to Vijay, FOUR, superb back foot punch. Just a trifle short, you can say it was on a
back of a length after seeing the replay, but Vijay stood tall and punched it with great timing and
once it hit the practice wickets near the deep cover boundary, it raced away
8.5

Boult to Pujara, FOUR, too full and Pujara lays into a cover drive. Didn't come fully forward but
transferred his weight into the shot from the crease. The bat came down high and nice, then
crashed into the ball to sent it into the vacant cover region. Hit along the ground
5.5
Matt Henry to Pujara, FOUR, fine off-drive. Matt Henry guilty of bowling too full again, he is
looking for swing, but there is none that time. Pujara leans into a full-blooded drive. Purrs away
past mid-off. Held the pose after playing that and it came right off the middle of the bat. Jinks
Rahane is seen clapping that shot in appreciation. Matt Henry needs to pull his length back a bit
5.4
Matt Henry to Pujara, FOUR, now he is off the mark. With a well-timed flick off the pads. Matt
Henry went full and drifted down leg, easy for Pujara who had to miss the man at mid-wicket
and does so easily. The dhols start beating and that's music to the ears - to borrow an old cliche
4.2
Boult to Vijay, FOUR, lovely off-drive. Not a half volley from Boult, just full outside off, was
driven on the rise as Vijay came forward and creamed it. Once it passed the diving fielder, it was
four all the way. Vijay didn't try to hit it too hard, just relied on timing and it hit the middle of the
bat and scooted away
1.4
Matt Henry to Dhawan, out Bowled!! Dhawan flops. Doesn't impress on his comeback game.
How many chances more will he get? Has had a fair run and hasn't got enough runs to nail down
that opening slot. That's why lost his spot to KL Rahul. Now when the Karnataka man is injured,
gets his second opportunity and goes for 1. Could've left that length delivery alone outside off,
but decided to chop with an angled bat and the inside edge dislodged the leg bail. The ball hit the
ground and went back on. The room wasn't there to play the cut and Dhawan was cramped for
room. Dhawan walks away very disappointed with himself. On a pitch that has something for the
bowlers, the visitors strike. All smiles from Matt Henry and Co. Dhawan b Matt Henry 1(10)
