FIRST HALF: HOW DID THE PHILIPPINES MANAGED TO LAND THE THIRD SPOT

(WITH MALLORIE) (AKA Bakit hindi napili yung ibang countries as the top 3 English speaking
country)

Toni: How the Filipinos learned to speak English could be traced back to when,
as mentioned earlier, the Philippines was a colony of the United States.
Firstly, During the Amerian colonial rule, there was a heavy emphasis on
mass public education. The United States sent teachers to help establish
schools where the Filipino children could have a free education. A large group
of these teachers were called Thomasites, named after the boat that they
came from, called Thomas. The Filipinos were called little brown Americans
for adopting the American Form of Government, the English language, and
even the American lifestyle. There are even english words with Filipino
counterparts such as biscuit and biskwit, cake and keyk, and ballpen and
bolpen. At a point in time during this period, Filipino students were prohibited
from speaking in Filipino in schools. An English version of Lupang Hinirang
was even created called Land of the Morning.
Secondly, In the Philippines you can see English everywhere. This is not only
for the convenience of tourists. You can see English on the signs, government
documents, menus, advertisements, malls, in businesses and offices, and a
lot more. There are even English construction signs on the road such as Caution
Construction in Progress. If you compare this to other countries, such as Thailand, construction
signs would be written in Thai. Seeing how it is everywhere, It is customary for

Filipinos to learn the English language or else they would not be able to adapt
to their surroundings as they get older. After all, English is the countrys
second language.
Thirdly, the Filipinos are confronted with English media in their everyday
lives. There are Filipino newspapers that are published in English such as The
Manila bulletin, Philippine Star, and Philippine Daily Inquirer. Once they open
the television, there are many Filipino News channels in the English language
available such as ANC News and CNN Philippines.
