Subject: Continuous Monitoring of Fuel Pump Baffle Screw Condition
To: Chief Engineer, Second Engineer, Watchkeeping Engineers Validity: NSC Fleet vessel auxiliary engines Scope: During maintenance of fuel pumps baffle screws to be checked on mandatory basis. Background: During evaluation of auxiliayr engine lubricants continuous igress of fuel oil and therefore contamination of lubricant has been observed, leading to reduced life time and performance of engine lube oil. Worn baffle screws will not perform as designed/ intended and can lead to damaged O-rings inside fuel pump, increasing leakage rate through fuel pump actuator via camshaft to crankcase. Recommendation: 1. At every overhaul of fuel pump baffle screws to be checked for condition. 2. In case of slight wear visible at hardened surface baffle screw is to be replaced. 3. Sufficient stock of baffle screws to be kept on board.
