Center for Life Skills

Ashawna Abbott & Bethenie Pinney
Title of Program: Human Scavenger Hunt
Purpose: To have clients initiate conversation with one another and recognize the use of the
BREATH pathway in their lives.
Client Characteristics: Stroke injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and anoxic brain injuries.
Clients Involved: All
Goals/ Measurable Objectives:
- By the end of the program, participants will have prompted at least 5 conversations with
other clients at CLS.
- By the end of the program, participants will have recognized the role of BREATH in
other clients lives.
- By the end of the program, clients will have independently made decisions pertaining to
initiating conversation, at least 5 times.
- By the end of the program, participants will have utilized sequencing skills to accomplish
a task throughout 80% of the program.
Description: Clients use a worksheet as they move around the room, engendering conversation
by trying to find a person who has a certain characteristic (each characteristic is related to the
BREATH pathway) listed on their Human Scavenger Hunt Sheet. When participants find
someone who likes to read or someone who does yoga for example, the individual signs
their name on their worksheet of paper and moves on to the next person; with the hope that
another person meets one of the other characteristics on the sheet, the activity continues until all
the characteristics are signed by participants. Rules: 1. An individual can only sign their name by
one characteristics per sheet, as to promote more conversation amongst all the clients. 2. Clients
can only ask each person they initiate conversation with 5 questions. This rule stops individuals
from avoiding conversation and having others simply sign their sheet without exchanging
dialogue.
Supplies/equipment: Description sheets, pens/pencils.
Staffing Requirements: RT and SLP student clinicians may need to encourage clients who have
goals of increasing communication in prompting conversation with other participants. Student
clinicians should also help ensure that clients are following the rules of the activity.
Method of evaluating programs value and worth: Post Session Report Form
Method of evaluating client progress toward goals: Clients progress towards objectives
