pipes? Derive an expression for optimum critical radius
and show the variation of heat transfer with radius. Give

ii) If a 0.4mm thick oil film with a dynamic viscosity of
0.012 pa.s is applied between the block and inclined
surface, find the percent reduction in the required force.

(a) A water storage tank 10m10m10m has a drainage
opening on one of the vertical sides at the bottom which is
trapezoidal in shape with a width 2m at the bottom 4 m at
the top and 1m height. A gate of same dimension hinged
along the top edge is used to close it. What is the minimum
horizontal force required to be applied at the bottom to
keep the gate closed if the tank has full of water in it? Will
there be any change in the force required if the tank is only
half full? If yes how much?

speed of 200 rad/sec in a container. The gap of 1.2mm on
all sides between body and the container is filled with oil

is 0.027pa.s. Assuming the velocity in each oil layer to
vary linearly. Determine the force that needs to be applied
on

(a) A conical cylinder of length L & Radii R1 & R2 ( R1 R2)
is fully insulated along the outer surface and two ends are
maintained at T1 & T2 ( T1 > T2). Considering 1-D steady
state heat flow. Derive expression for Q. If (R1 = 1.25 cm ;
R2 = 2.5 cm & L = 20 cm,

(a) A hydraulic lift of the type commonly used for greasing
automobiles consists of a 280.18 mm cylinder. The annular
space between the ram and cylinder is filled with oil
having a kinematic viscosity of 0.00042 m2/s and specific
gravity of 0.86. If the rate of travel of the ram is 0.22 m/s,
find the frictional resistance when 2m of the ram is
engaged in the cylinder. (Consider diameter of ram is
280 mm)

(b) Experimental results indicate that the local heat transfer coefficient hx for flow over a flat plate with an extremely
rough surface is approximated by the relation:
hx = a x0.12
Where a is a constant coefficient and x is distance from
the leading edge of the plate. Set up a relation between this
local heat transfer coefficient and the average heat transfer
coefficient h for a plate of length x.

(c) Establish a relationship for the time taken to form a layer
of ice on surface of a pond. How much time it will take for
a layer of ice of thickness 20cm to increase by 2mm on the
surface of pond when the temperature of surroundings is

(d) A spherical thermocouple of 2.5 mm diameter is used to


measure the temp. of air flowing in a pipe. Initially both
the thermocouple and air areat 300C. The air is heated to
temperature of 2350C and maintained at this temperature.
Find the time required for thermocouple to reach 2000C.
Also find out time constant of thermocouple and comment
on the suitability of couple unsteady state temperature.
For thermocouple material, = 9000 kg/m3, Cp = 0.4
kJ/kg-k, Convective heat transfer coefficient between
thermocouple and air is 120 W/m2-k.
