1. What is a landscape?
When we travel over there, we can see
different landscapes.
A landscape is composed of different
things that we can see in a place, for example,
flat lands, rivers, mountains, valleys, forests,

2. Mountains
In a mountain landscape we can see mountains

surface. Different mountains grouped together are


called mountain range and different mountain

Valley

Valleys are low parts between mountains.

We can see rivers in valleys.

3. Plains
Plains are extensions of flat lands without hills
or mountains.

A plateau is a plain with high altitude.

Depressions are lower than the land.

Coastal plains are flat land near the coast.

4. Spanish relief
The relief of Spain is comprised of: the Central Plateau, the mountains
surrounding the plateau, the mountains outside the plateau and depressions of
the Ebro and Guadalquivir.
The Central Plateau is in the center of the Peninsula. It is divided into two
parts by the Central System: North Sub-plateu and South Sub-plateau.
There are different mountains to the north, east and south of the Central
Plateau.

The Pyrenees that is a mountain chain to the north of the Central


plateau.

The Betic chain that is to the south of the Central plateau.


The highest mountain in the Iberian Peninsula is the Mulhacn (3.478 m).

There are also two extensive depressions:

The Ebro depression in the north.

The Guadalquivir depression in the south.

5. The coast.
The coast is the place where the land
meets the sea.
The are two types of coasts:
Low coasts: they often have sandy beaches.
High coasts: they often have rocky cliffs.

5.1. Types of coastline


There are many different forms of coastal relief.

Cape: it is a part that goes along the sea.

Gulf: it is an entrance of the land to the sea. If it is small, it is called a

bay.

Peninsula: It is a portion of land surrounded by water on all sides except

one. This side is called a isthmus.

Island: It is a portion of land surrounded by water on all sides. Various

islands close to each other form what is called an archipelago.

Archipelago: is a group of islands.

Estuary: is the part of a river which opens into the sea.

5.2. Spanish coats


Spain has about 6.000 kilometres of coastline
in the peninsula.
The Cantabrian coast is a very high and rocky
coast.
The Atlantic coast is very varied. In the north is
high and rocky and in the south is low and sandy.
