Frankenstein's
creation, whom
Victor
Frankenstein calls "the wretch," "the demon," and
"the monster," is also very different from most
portrayals in movies. Though a giant man of
grotesque proportions, the creation at heart is wellintentioned and gentle. He longs to be accepted by
humans and hopes to live among them, but he is
repeatedly beaten and chased away because of his
appearance. For a time he is able to live undetected
alongside a cottage in which a loving but
impoverished family lives. The creature is deeply
moved by their tenderness and wants nothing more
than to join the family in devotion, but again he is
Alphonse
Frankenstein is Victor's
father.
Throughout the novel he is shown to be caring and
supportive of his family. He repeatedly tries to help
Victor overcome his sorrows, though he never
learns the true source of his son's anguish.
