Other Line Interactive Designs

One design
incorporates isolation transformers to electrically isolate the
UPS from the rest of the building, often considered a safety
feature though it sometimes is used for the additional filtering.

Another, more common, design

uses additional conditioning of power, often referred to as automatic
voltage regulation or AVR, which allows the UPS to provide near ideal
power through a much larger voltage window. This minimizes the
amount of time spent on battery and increases the batterys life.
It works like this

Background
To this point you have been presented with information about electrical
static UPS systems, the most common type of UPS systems found in
data centers.
Another, less common, type of UPS is the mechanical rotary UPS.

Static
UPS

A static UPS makes use of solid-state circuitry

(rather than a rotating mass) within the UPS to
provide ride-through time when utility is lost.

Rotary
UPS

A rotary UPS uses the inertia of a high-mass

spinning flywheel as the energy storage device
combining with a motor-generator, to provide
short-term ride-through for critical loads in the
event of utility power loss.
Click each UPS type for a brief description.

Hitec Power Protection
EURO-DIESEL / E1 Dynamics
Schneider Electric does not offer a rotary UPS at the present time.
However, it is important that you have a general understanding of this
topic as you will undoubtedly read about it in articles and may be asked
about it by customers.
Lets start by looking at the two types of rotary UPS systems.

Motor-Generator / Battery Rotary UPS

When the utility voltage and frequency fall within an acceptable
range
then the motor component of the rotary
UPS is driven directly from the utility.
That motor then provides mechanical
Flywheel
power to the generator component of the
motor-generator to support the critical load with clean power.

MotorGenerator

When utility voltage and frequency parameters fall outside of

preset limits
then the rectifier / inverter unit begins to provide controlled power to the
motor, which is coupled directly to the generator to support the critical
load. When a blackout occurs, the battery bank provides necessary
power via the inverter to the motor-generator to support the load. The
stored energy within the batteries provides sufficient ride-through to
sustain the load until the standby generator (outside of the UPS) comes
up to full operating speed.

Engine-Coupled Rotary UPS

The key components of an engine-coupled rotary UPS include the
following:
Motor-generator
Diesel
Choke
Engine
Flywheel
Mechanical clutch
Diesel engine
Under normal operation, the utility feeds power to the critical load via
the filter (made up of the choke and motor). The same motor also
provides the necessary power to the flywheel to retain kinetic storage of
energy in case of emergency.
During failure mode, power is supplied by the flywheel to the motorgenerator unit, which in turn supports the critical load for a few seconds
before the diesel engine runs up to full speed. The clutch is then engaged
to provide mechanical power to the motor-generator to supply continuity
of power to the load.

The Evolution of the Rotary UPS

Rotary technology has been utilized for many years and came into
prominence at a time when loads would commonly exhibit a
low power factor which resulted in increased losses in the power
distribution system and thus, an increased energy cost and
high harmonics which prematurely shortened the life of
transformers and capacitors.
Users would experience the dimming of lights,
brought on by voltage dips and sags, when
large motors turned on, for example. These
load characteristics, in turn, would destabilize
the electronics of connected loads within the
electrical network.

Suitable Environments
Rotary UPS systems are more suited to environments characterized by
multiple short inrushes of power. An example is an environment in which
multiple motors constantly turn on and off.
Other examples include:
Satellite stations and broadcast stations
where high power amplifiers turn on and
off in rapid and random sequence
High security installations such
as military applications whose
goal it is to prevent electrical
eavesdropping

Rotary or Static?
The short answer is it depends on who you ask.
Proponents of rotary tout the system to be at least 10 times more
reliable than static and thus preferable because of the following:
Quality of the sine wave is superior No harmonic distortion
Less complex system
No need for power capacitors
Inherent fault clearing
No distorted loads / clipping
of the voltage
Less sensitivity to working
temperatures
Whereas proponents of static systems tout these benefits over rotary:
Less complex installation and maintenance procedures
Lower Mean Time to Repair (MTTR)
Low to no noise, vibration, and exhaust gas
Higher efficiency

Whats eco-mode?
Heres how eco-mode is defined in the Operations Manual:
In bypass operation, an even higher operating efficiency may be
achieved without sacrificing protection when there are good power
conditions. Depending on configuration, efficiency can exceed 99%.
The load remains in bypass mode until the input voltage exceeds
tolerance levels, and then enters full protection mode. UPS
performance Class B cannot be guaranteed during short circuit error
scenarios and other conditions. This setting is disabled by default and
can be configured using the touchscreen display.

Savings and Cost Considerations

Eco-mode will save energy, although the amount saved is surprisingly
small and depends on power quality and typical load. Further, the energy
saved comes at a significant cost in electrical protection and reliability.
A primary consideration is that eco-mode is not always compatible with
transfer switches used in the distribution chain. Any incompatibilities must
be resolved before committing to eco-mode.
Some data center operators will
decide the energy savings are
worth the risks and problems,
but many will not.

Key Learning Points

The standby UPS has historically been the most common type of personal and
workstation style in a UPS. Models include Back-UPS CS, ES, and NS.
The line interactive design is most commonly used in small business and
departmental servers. Models include the Schneider Electric Smart-UPS line.
Double conversion on-line UPS are the dominant, larger UPS systems.
Models include the Schneider Electric Symmetra and Galaxy / EPS lines.
Delta conversion on-line is an Schneider Electric-only technology and can be
found in the Symmetra MW and Silcon products.
A rotary UPS uses the inertia of a high-mass spinning flywheel to provide shortterm power in the event of a power loss. SE does not offer a rotary UPS.
In eco-mode, any mains power abnormality causes the UPS to switch power
paths between bypass and inverter.
