My fellow anglers and friends,

Greetings to all. I hope all of you have been having fantastic
fishing days. We are nearing the end of 2016 and it is within
these months that the East Coast of Malaysia will be hit by
the annual monsoon bringing in strong winds, rough seas,
and heavy rain storms. Please be careful out there especially if you decide to
head out to sea.
What a month it has been. Did you know that as you age your body system
changes and suddenly you start getting allergies to things that you have had
no allergies with before? I learnt that recently and ended up stuck in bed for
over a week. All it took was one medication that I suddenly become allergic to.
What dont kill you makes you stronger right? I seriously hope so.
Here is a piece of good news. We will be running a story writing competition
that will be open to all anglers in Malaysia (for a start). Checkout the advertisement inside this issue. We look forward to your participation.

ne rod series that I really like is the Fenwick

Techna AV series. They were built lightweight and
reinforced with an Aramid Veil wrap that gave it
exceptional strength and increased power. When
I learnt that a new Techna AV rod series is on its
way, I was ecstatic and could not wait to test them.
Finally I got my hand on them...

Aramid Veil + Cross Wrapping
Fenwick has for many years used the Aramid Veil

wrap on their Techna AV rods. Aramid Veil is made
of Aramid fibres that are heat resistant and strong
synthetic fibres. This fibres add strength to the blank
of the rod. Now they have cross wrapped them of
which should increase strength even further. Lets
see...
The Fenwick Techna AV X looks similar to the older Techna AV except for the X Wrapped section at
the butt. The feel too has changed probably due
to the usage of X Wrapping and a more modern
blank technology.

Fighting Power
The Techna AV X does have a slightly softer tip

which makes for better casting. When it comes to
battling the fish the softer tip absorbs the sudden
hit and run allowing the rod to bend until it reaches the backbone at about 70% of the blank before
it starts to power up providing for lots of fighting
power.
Quality Components
The Techna AV X comes with natural cork handles

that looks good and feels good. It fits well into the
design of the rod. It comes with high quality Fuji
guides that provides for smoother casting and reduced line wear and tear. For better reel grip, it
comes with quality Fuji reel seat.

Field Test
To test the Tecna AV X we took it to our usual testing site, the Natural Exotic Pond, Rawang (Selangor, Malaysia) where large gladiator fishes such as
the Amazon red tail catfish, Asian red tail catfish,
Mekong Catfish, etc. lay in wait.
Good Casting
As expected the Techna AV X cast like a charm.

We easily cast our baits sending them to very
good distances, right into the fishing zone where
the fishes hideout. Every cast was a confident
cast. The rod tip flicks out baits well and is rigid
enough not to have too much wobble. This allows
for greater accuracy.

In Battle
Within minutes we were onto fish. The rod bends

well absorbing the shock and the strong backbone
handles the fish well. Big strong fighters were subdued with reasonable ease. Within a short time
these fishes were posing for the camera.
A powerhouse of a rod, the Techna AV X fought a number of big gladiators and passed with flying colours.

The Fenwick Techna AV X is certainly a good rod

with classic Techna AV looks. It casts and handles
fish well. It may feel slightly different from the older
one but I put it down to the added X Wrapping and
modern blank technology.

ne of my favourite rods from Berkley is the Series One rods. The first time I laid eyes on them I
was captivated especially by its skeleton designed
reel seat. That was probably some 15 years ago.
Wait, maybe more. That was when I saw it first.
The Series One was actually introduced some 30
years ago.

Berkley recently launched the new Series One

rod and it comes with the skeleton designed reel
seat that I like. Needless to say I went in search
of the new Series One for months and finally got
myself one to test and it was love at first sight.
Classic Design
The new Berkley Series One rods have a classic

look to them coming in dark granite looking blank
colour and cork reel seat. Take a closer look and
one will notice the spiral wrapping of the blank
that makes the Series One look even better. The
copper coloured words adds more character to
its design.

Precision Reel Seat
While the reel seat design certainly is an eye

catcher it has something else that is also available in the older Series One, a reel seat clicker. This is what Berkley calls a Precision Reel
Seat as the reel seat lock clicks whilst it is being turned.
The Series One comes with a 30 ton 100% carbon fibre blank that is lightweight and very well
balanced. I have the one rated medium light (ML)
and I especially like the way it feels being not too
soft but with its rigidity done just right.

Components
The series one comes with high quality stainless

steel guide frames with deep pressed Zirconium
Oxide Inserts that gives them higher durability.
The reel seat is Berkleys own design and so
far has only been used on the Series One rods.
Cork handle is used to bring down its weight
and to offer better grip.
Good design withn natural cork handle for a lighter

feel and better grip.

To test how it performs we took it to the barramundi ponds in Jugra where we will be fishing
light using one inch Berkley Powerbait Grubs and
Decoy Jigheads. I decided to pair the Series One
with the very lightweight Pflueger Patriarch spinning reel of which makes them a perfect pair.

Casting Abilities
When it comes to casting, the Series One cast

very well and smooth of which I attribute to the
guides used as well as to its lovely blank. Having a rigidity that is just nice gives enough flex
to cast out the baits without wobbling too much.
This gives it good accuracy and distance.
Sensitivity
Using 30 ton 100% carbon fibre blank has another advantage and that advantage is sensitivity.
The Series One is a sensitive rod. I felt almost
every bump, rock, etc. at the bottom as I swam
the grub. It telegraphed information to my hands
well.

Fish Fighting
We did hit some good sized barramundis on the

Series One. The rod bent into a smooth and lovely curve absorbing the runs of the barramundi
but it has a good backbone that recoils the rod
back helping to fight the fish; the testament of a
good blank. The Series One rod I used can certainly take on larger and harder fighters.
Verdict
The new Berkley Series One rods are quality

rods with very good performance. They are lightweight, sensitive, cast well, fights well, and they
feel really good. They are not cheap rods though
but should you have the budget, they are worth
dollars spent.

ith slow pitch jigging or long fall jigging on the

rise it make sense for fishing brands to tap into this
market segment. Abu Garcia too has been making
waves in this segment and has developed a rod
that will soon hit our shores. This rod is the Abu
Garcia PRM Skid Shaft rod that is made especially
for long fall jigging.

Soft Tip With Reasonable

Recoil
The tip of the PRM is softer but has recoil power

to lift jigs during the lift or up action. This is important as when it comes to this sort of jigging,
we want the jig to raise slowly at a certain speed
and not just shoot upwards.
To be able to do so, Abu Garcia uses a weaving
method weaving carbon tapes and fibreglass
tapes when making the blank. This gives the
blank added elasticity and good recoil, as well
as increased torque and strength.
Acid Wrapped
For those unfamiliar with the term acid wrapped,

acid wrapped or spiral wrapped simply means that
the guides are placed in a manner where they begin at the top (nearest the reel seat) and spirals
to the bottom and continues in that position until
the final guide at the tip.
It may look odd but it has good benefits over conventional guide placements. The main benefit is
that it reduces torque and provides the angler a
more stable and thus much better control during
the fight; all the more important especially when
the fish is a tough fighter.

Materials Used
The PRM comes with high quality KR Concept

Fuji Guides that are lighter in weight and more
importantly reduces the wear and tear on lines.
It also comes with Fuji reel seats that provides
for a grip on the reel. High quality EVA handles
offers much better grip to the angler.
Although they come in a split rear handle design

for weight reduction, there is an additional piece
of EVA handle provided of which the split section
of the rod can be inserted into. This protects the
section from scratches especially when the rod is
placed in a rod holder.

Field Test
Although the PRM has a soft tip, it does have

a strong backbone offering more than enough
power when battling a brute of a fish. This was
evident during our field test at the Natural Exotic Pond in Rawang, Selangor, Malaysia. Quite a
few large and hard fighting Amazon red tail catfishes were battled and landed. We managed to
turn them away from the underwater snags (pillars) and pull them into the open.
Good Backbone
>A softer tip makes casting easy. It also has good backbone to handle brutes.

Verdict
The Abu Garcia PRM Skid Shaft is a very capable rod and great for long fall jigging. It has
lots of backbone power an essential tool when
battling fish. Also, the additional PVC piece certainly does come in handy.

olante is a slow jig introduced recently by Rod

Ford. Within a short time it has caused massive
waves in the fishing scene as well as becoming a
major fear to the fishes under the sea. It is as one
heck of a productive fish catcher.

Durable Luminosity
The Volante comes with one of the best most

durable glow in the dark (luminous) properties
a little light is all that is needed to have them
charged. The glow last longer too underwater of
which means that you can focus on the fishing
instead of constantly having to worry if your jig
has gone dark.
Irregular Flutter
One important thing is the structure of the jig which

provides an irregular fluttering fall and one very crazy darting action that a diversity of fish species find
irresistible as reported by the countless anglers who
have used the Volante jig.

or those of you who dont know, toro is a

Spanish word for bull. Abu Garcia has over the
years named some of its larger low profile reels
Toro. The Toro reels such as the Revo Toro are
low profile reels that dont mind getting the crap
beat out of them as they beat back. The Toro
has been a mid to high price range reel but now
theyve entered the entry level range too.

No Frills
The Abu Garcia MAXTORO is a no frills saltwater designed to catch big fish without burning a hole in ones pocket. Although I use the
word no frills, it does not mean that the MAXTORO is an under performer. The MAXTORO is
a heavy duty performer just like its higher end
sibling. The difference is in the material with the
Toro using X-Craftic Alloy frame whereas the
MAXTORO uses graphite.
Mean Look
The MAXTORO looks like a mean robot. The colours

it comes with and the design certainly makes for such
a look. It comes with metallic grey side plates and
matte black one piece graphite frame giving it the
industrial mean look.

Brakes
The MAXTORO uses a magnetic brake system

with 8 magnets for brakes. Many have ask me
this; how do the magnets work since magnets
do not work on aluminium? I have written an article on this much earlier but many seem to be
unable to locate it, hence I have decided to publish it again in this issues Knowledge Wise.

Powerhouse Of A Reel
One other quality of a bull is its sheer strength. The

MAXTORO comes with a 25lb max drag which is plenty. Well, that is what the folks at Abu Garcia claims.
Testing in our lab revealed that the drag is actually
higher. We tested it using a 25lb line. The line burst
at 30.5lb and we have not maxed out the drag. We
were only at about 80% drag.

My Thoughts
The objective of the Abu Garcia MAXTORO is

to subdue hard fighters with its heavy drag and
nothing else fancy. It is made to be a workhorse
at entry level prices allowing those with shallower pockets to fish amongst those who can afford higher end reels, being on par; fighting the
same brutes and landing the same brutes. Good
reel this is.

hese days we talk about the more advanced

methods of fishing the likes of lure casting, jigging, etc. But when it comes to fishing most anglers started their journey with bottom fishing of
which is the most basic form of fishing.
What Is Bottom Fishing?
Bottom fishing is the most basic and relaxing form

of fishing. It is as simple as tying a piece of thread
to a stick, putting some bait on the hook, and dropping the hook into the water hoping for a fish to
take the bait. Well, it sounds like pole fishing right?
Pole fishing is indeed a form of bottom fishing.
I do enjoy bottom fishing and do them all the time.
It helps me relax as I sit back, chat with friends, or
read a book, while I wait for the fish to bite.

Technicalities
Bottom fishing can be a simple method of fishing

and it can get really technical as well. Simple if the
anglers objective is to sit back relax and it does
not matter if the fish takes the bait, and the whole
objective of the fishing trip is to relax and unwind.
>How technical? Getting the right mix into the dough
bait is important.
It gets very technical when the objective of the fishing trip is to catch lots of fish or the biggest fish; competitive fishing professionally or amongst friends, or
if the objective is to catch only a certain targetted
fish species in a pond or lake that has quite a few
species of fishes in them.

Bintulu Fishing Fun
ack in June I began studying in Bintulu, and it

has opened up many sport fishing opportunities for
me. Bintulu has offered me endless fun both in fresh
and salt. The best part is I can enjoy the fun with
some great friends. Here is Altaff, with his first fish
on lure while trying out a baitcasting setup for the
first time. He used the Abu Garcia Silvermax II and
he got the hang of it in no time.
While hunting for tarpons in an estuary, Altaff had this little

Trevally as a surprise. He had hooked into another small
Trevally earlier but it managed to shake the hook. Small
barramundi and solid tarpons were around but they only bit
lures a few times. Slow retrieves with twitches brought the
bites.

On a follow up trip, I caught my first Indo Pacific

tarpon after many years of failing to catch them. I
used the ORcraft Spearyu in zombie and had many
hits. Casting into groups of tarpons boiling and proceeding with slow twitches brought many bites. I
used the Rod Ford Creations Battlax Finezze 46
4-10lb paired with the Abu Garcia Revo Rocket and
8lb Berkley Fireline. The soft tip of the Finezze 46
helped in getting a solid hook up.
Never in my wildest dreams did I think I could

land a Tarpon on a popper. After an hour of consistent popping over a group of Tarpons, one
came up and gave my Berkley Frenzy Popper a
solid blast. A great fight ensued, and the Battlax
Finezze 46 handled the jumps very nicely. Lifting
up the fish over long grass was no issue.

This snakehead was caught from the same island

the previous snakehead came from. It took the 3
Berkley Powerbait Pre Rigged Swimshad (Shiner
Chartreuse) viciously. Before it took the Pre Rigged
Swimshad, it hit a swimbait of my friend who failed
to set the hook.
While my frog was out of view behind the ferns,

a snakehead slammed it. I heard the sound of a
splash and proceeded to make a quick hookset
with my 10-20lb Viper Double Dragon. The fish
was on but it managed to tangle around ferns.
While trying to reach for the fish, it thrashed and
dropped back in. Sometimes you win, sometimes
you lose.

This little snakehead came from a bank covered in

ferns. I slowly retrieved the 3 Berkley Powergrub.
The pearl white colour helps in increasing bites
in murky water. I picked up a bite with the Double
Dragon and proceeded with a quick hookset. This
little snakehead is no match against the 10-20lb Viper Double Dragon and Abu Garcia Revo Rocket.
This snakehead was caught a few minutes later

on a spinnerbait rigged with a 3 Berkley Powerbait Powergrub (Fire Tiger) for vibration and
visibility in the clear water. This snakehead took
the spinnerbait beside a fern island. The ambush was surprising and caused a bit of panic as
there was a lot of structure around. Notice the
tangled line around the spinnerbait?

Kelanang Beach
believe most would have heard of Morib Beach a

beach frequented by the folks who live around the areas
of Banting. However, there is a lesser known beach close
by that few care to go to and for good reason. It is not a
beach for swimming. This beach is Kelanang Beach.

Fishing Perhaps
While swimming and most normal beach activities

cannot be done at Kelanang beach with the exception
of picnicking and camping, Kelanang Beach is a good
spot for beach fishing especially beach casting or
surfcasting. It is said to be a Grade A fishing beach
with good table fishes.

It also has a childrens playground by the beach allowing children to go let out some of the surplus energy while the anglers of the family cast their lines
into the sea in hopes of catching something for the

trees providing ample shade from the sun. It is a decent place for photographers who enjoy hunting down
subjects to shoot.

comes to Banting as it is hailed by many to be the
best soto in Banting. The soup is really tasty and I
