Body Biography Project

For this assignment you will be creating a visual representation of Montresor. After
we finish reading the story it will become clear that the way Montresor views
himself is quite different from the way we view him. Your body biography should
capture those differing views.
Step One: Draw the outline of a body. You can decide the position you want him in.
Step Two: Split the body in half some way. One side of the body should represent
how we view Montresor, and the other side should represent how he views himself.
You can split the body down the middle, or flip the paper over to represent the
different views.
Step Three: You should choose the best way to represent the following aspects of
the character symbolically:
1. The Heart: Where should it be placed to best represent what this character
loves most? What should it look like and what shape, color, pictures, or
symbols should be included in it?
2. The Backbone: This should be represented in a way that visually conveys
what motivates the character most. What is his main goal or objective?
What drives him?
3. The Hands: What does the character hold in his hands? What does he do
with his hands? Items that are associated with the character both literally or
figuratively can be included.
4. The Feet: On what is the character standing? This should be a symbolic
representation of the characters most fundamental beliefs about life.
5. The Background: Draw some elements that suggest the characters
environment, background, or predicament.
6. Quotations: You should have a minimum of five direct quotes or passages
from the text that sum up the character and help us understand him. Make
sure you are using MLA format to properly cite your quotes.
Some Tips:

Placement: Carefully choose the areas where you draw and write about
Montresor. For example, does he think a lot? What could go in the head/brain
area to represent his thought processes?
Virtues and Vices: Take into consideration the good and bad qualities or
characteristics that your character displays. How could you visually represent
these?
Color: Colors can be symbolic. What colors will you use to represent Montresor
and why? Maybe the colors that we view him with are dark and gloomy, while
the colors in which he sees himself are bright and vibrant.

Symbols: What objects can you associate with Montresor to represent his
characteristics?
Changes: Does he change at all in the story? If so, how could you represent
that?
Mirror, Mirror: Consider how Montresor appears to others on the surface versus
what you know about his inner self. What does that tell you about him? How can
you represent it visually?
