Papers to avoid
Using paper that is too thin or too thick, paper that has a slick texture, or paper that
stretches easily can cause paper jams. Using paper that has a heavy texture or does
not accept ink can cause printed images to smear, bleed, or not fill in completely.
Papers to avoid for all print and copy jobs
Any size paper other than those listed in the technical specifications chapter of
your printed documentation.
Paper with cutouts or perforations (unless specifically designed for use with HP
inkjet devices).
Highly textured stock, such as linen. It might not print evenly, and the ink can
bleed into these papers.
Extremely smooth, shiny, or coated papers not specifically designed for the
HP All-in-One. They can jam the HP All-in-One or repel the ink.
Multi-part forms, such as duplicate and triplicate forms. They can wrinkle or get
stuck, and the ink is more likely to smear.
Envelopes with clasps or windows. They can get stuck in the rollers and cause
paper jams.
Banner paper.
Additional papers to avoid when copying
Envelopes.
Transparency film other than HP Premium Inkjet Transparency Film or
HP Premium Plus Inkjet Transparency Film.
Iron-On Transfers.
Greeting card paper.
Load paper
This section describes the procedure for loading different types and sizes of paper
into the HP All-in-One for your copies or printouts.
Tip To help prevent rips, wrinkles, and curled or bent edges, store all paper
flat in a resealable bag. If the paper is not stored properly, extreme changes in
temperature and humidity might result in curled paper that does not work well
in the HP All-in-One.
This section contains the following topics:
18
Note If you are using letter or A4 paper or smaller, make sure the tray
extender is open all the way.
2.
Tap a stack of paper on a flat surface to align the edges, and then check the
paper for the following:
Make sure it is free of rips, dust, wrinkles, and curled or bent edges.
Make sure all the paper in the stack is the same size and type.
19
Chapter 5
3.
Insert the stack of paper into the input tray with the short edge forward and the
print side down. Slide the stack of paper forward until it stops.
Caution Make sure that the HP All-in-One is idle and silent when you
load paper into the input tray. If the HP All-in-One is servicing the print
cartridges or otherwise engaged in a task, the paper stop inside the
device might not be in place. You could push the paper too far forward,
causing the HP All-in-One to eject blank pages.
Tip If you are using letterhead, insert the top of the page first with the
print side down.
4.
Slide the paper-width guide inward until it stops at the edge of the paper.
Do not overload the input tray; make sure the stack of paper fits within the input
tray and is no higher than the top of the paper-width guide.
Note When you use legal-size paper, leave the tray extender closed.

Fast (one star) copies faster than the Normal setting. The text is comparable to
the quality of the Normal setting, but the graphics might be lower quality. The
Fast setting uses less ink and extends the life of your print cartridges.
Note Fast is not available when the paper type is set to Photo Paper.

Normal (two stars) delivers high-quality output and is the recommended setting
for most of your copying. Normal copies faster than Best.

This section contains the following topics:
Look at the On light located on the front of the HP All-in-One. If it is not lit, the
HP All-in-One is turned off. Make sure the power cord is firmly connected to the
HP All-in-One and plugged into a power outlet. Press the On button to turn on the
HP All-in-One.
Check the USB cable. If you are using an older cable, it might not be working
properly. Try connecting it to another product to see if the USB cable works. If
you experience problems, the USB cable might need to be replaced. Also verify
that the cable does not exceed 3 meters (9.8 feet) in length.
Check the connection from the HP All-in-One to your computer. Verify that the
USB cable is securely plugged into the USB port on the back of the HP All-inOne. Make sure the other end of the USB cable is plugged into a USB port on
73
Chapter 12
your computer. After the cable is connected properly, turn the HP All-in-One off
and then on again.
Check the System Profiler to verify your USB connection. If the HP All-in-One
shows up in the USB window, then the USB connection between your computer
and HP All-in-One is working. If it is working, there might be a problem with the
software. Use the Setup Assistant that came with your HP Photosmart Mac
Software to see if it can detect the HP All-in-One. Refer to the help provided with
your operating system for instructions on accessing the System Profiler.
If you are connecting the HP All-in-One through a USB hub, make sure the hub is
turned on. If the hub is on, try connecting directly to your computer.
Check other printers or scanners. You might need to disconnect older products
from your computer.
Try connecting the USB cable to another USB port on your computer. After you
check the connections, try restarting your computer. Turn the HP All-in-One off
and then on again.
If necessary, remove the software you installed with the HP All-in-One and then
install it again.
74
Keep all print cartridges in the original sealed packages until they are needed.
Store print cartridges at room temperature (15.6-26.6 C or 60-78 F).
Do not reattach the protective tape once it has been removed from the print
cartridge. Reattaching the plastic tape might damage the print cartridge. Place
the print cartridge in the HP All-in-One immediately after removing the plastic
tape. If this is not possible, store it in a print cartridge protector or airtight plastic
container.
HP recommends that you do not remove the print cartridges from the HP All-inOne until you have replacement print cartridges available to install.
Turn off the HP All-in-One from the control panel. Do not turn off the device by
turning off a power strip or unplugging the power cord from the HP All-in-One. If
you improperly turn off the HP All-in-One, the print carriage does not return to the
correct position and the print cartridges can dry out.
Do not open the print cartridge door unless necessary. This exposes the print
cartridges to air, which reduces the life of the print cartridges.
Note If you leave the print cartridge door open for a long period of time,
the HP All-in-One will recap the print cartridges to protect them from
exposure to air.
Clean the print cartridges when you notice a significant decrease in print quality.
Tip You might notice a decrease in print quality if the print cartridges
have not been used for a long time.
Do not clean the print cartridges unnecessarily. This wastes ink and shortens the
life of the cartridges.
Handle print cartridges carefully. Dropping, jarring, or rough handling during
installation can cause temporary printing problems. If print quality is poor right
after cartridge installation, allow half an hour for the print cartridge to recover.
Information on paper
The HP All-in-One is designed to work well with most paper types. Test a variety of
paper types before buying a large quantity. Find a paper type that works well and is
easy to purchase. HP Premium papers are designed for the best quality results. In
addition, follow these tips:
Do not use paper that is too thin, that has a slick texture, or that stretches easily.
It can feed incorrectly through the paper path, causing paper jams.
Store photo media in its original packaging inside a resealable plastic bag on a
flat surface in a cool, dry place. When you are ready to print, remove only the
paper you plan to use immediately. When you have finished printing, return any
unused photo paper to the plastic bag.
Do not leave unused photo paper in the input tray. The paper might start to curl,
which might reduce the quality of your printouts. Curled paper can also cause
paper jams.
Always hold photo paper by the edges. Fingerprints on photo paper can reduce
print quality.
Do not use paper that is heavily textured. It can cause graphics or text to print
improperly.
75
Chapter 12
Do not combine different paper types and paper sizes in the input tray; the entire
stack of paper in the input tray must be the same size and type.
Store printed photos under glass or in a storage book to prevent bleeding over
time from high humidity. Use HP Premium Plus photo paper for maximum
performance.

Make sure the power cord is firmly connected to both the HP All-in-One and
the power adaptor. Plug the power cord into a grounded power outlet, surge
protector, or power strip.
Power connection
If you are using a power strip, make sure the power strip is on. Or, try
plugging the HP All-in-One directly into a grounded power outlet.
Test the power outlet to make sure it is working. Plug in an appliance that
you know works, and see if the appliance has power. If not, then there might
be a problem with the power outlet.
If you plugged the HP All-in-One into a switched outlet, make sure the switch
is on. If it is switched to on but still does not work, then there might be a
problem with the power outlet.

Cause
Solution If the paper is too close to the print cartridge during printing, the ink
might be smeared. This can happen if the paper is raised, wrinkled, or very thick,
such as a mailing envelope. Make sure the paper lays flat in the input tray and is
not too wrinkled.
Solution Check the estimated ink levels remaining in the print cartridges. If the
print cartridges are low or out of ink, you might need to replace the print cartridges.
If there is ink remaining in the print cartridges, but you are still noticing a problem,

Cause Your image has light blue, gray, or brown hues that print near the bottom
of the page.
Solution Load high-quality paper in the input tray and print the image with a
high print quality setting, such as Best, Maximum dpi, or High Resolution.
Always make sure the paper you are printing on is flat. For best results when
printing images, use HP Premium Plus Photo Paper.
If the problem persists, use the software you installed with the HP All-in-One or
another software application to rotate your image 180 degrees so that the light
blue, gray, or brown hues in your image do not print at the bottom of the page.
Print the image using six-ink printing. To do so, install the photo print cartridge in
place of the black print cartridge. With the photo print cartridge and the tri-color
print cartridge installed, you have a six-ink system, which provides enhanced
quality photos.

Solution Close all applications that are not in use. This includes applications
that run in the background, such as screen savers and virus checkers. If you turn
off your virus checker, remember to turn it back on after you finish your scan.
If this problem occurs frequently, or if you encounter memory problems while
using other applications, you might need to add more memory to your computer.
See the user guide that came with your computer for more information.

Solution
Load your original print side down in the right front corner of the glass.
Solution The Autocrop feature crops anything that is not part of the main
image. Sometimes this might not be what you want. In that case, you can turn off
autocropping and crop the scanned image manually, or not at all.
You can change the Autocrop feature in the HP Scan Pro software.
To turn off autocropping
1. In the HP Scanning window, click Scan Document Settings.
2. Deselect Automatically Crop Scanned Documents, and then click OK.

If the memory card is not inserted properly, the HP All-in-One will not respond
and the Attention light (next to the memory card slots) will blink amber.
After the memory card has been inserted properly, the Proof Sheet button will
blink green for a few seconds, and then remain lit.
Cause
Solution Make sure you fully insert the memory card into the appropriate slot
on the HP All-in-One.

109
Chapter 12
After the memory card has been inserted properly, the Proof Sheet button will
blink green for a few seconds, and then remain lit.
Cause
Solution
If more than one memory card is inserted, the Attention light will blink amber, and
an error message will appear on the computer screen. Remove the additional
memory card to resolve the problem.
Cause
Solution Check the computer screen for an error message telling you that the
images on the memory card are corrupted.
If the file system on the card is corrupt, reformat the memory card in your digital
camera.
Caution Reformatting the memory card will delete any photos stored on
the card. If you have previously transferred the photos from your memory
card to a computer, try printing the photos from the computer. Otherwise,
you will need to retake any photos you might have lost.
You have video clips on a memory card, but they do not appear in iPhoto after
you import the memory cards contents.
Solution iPhoto handles still photos only. To manage both video clips and still
images, use Unload Images from the HP Photosmart Mac Software instead.
110
Solution Load the proof sheet print side down on the right front corner of the
glass. Make sure the sides of the proof sheet touch the right and front edges.
Close the lid.
Cause
Solution Make sure you filled out the proof sheet properly by selecting the
photos you want to print and the layout you want.
You can also check the computer screen for an error message telling you about
the problem and how to solve it.
For more information, see:
Print photos using a proof sheet on page 46
Cause
You did not select any photos on the proof sheet for printing.
Solution Make sure you filled out the proof sheet properly by selecting the
photos you want to print and the layout you want. Make sure you select only one
type of layout.
Cause The memory card used to print the proof sheet is not inserted in the
HP All-in-One.
Solution Make sure the same memory card you used to print the proof sheet is
still inserted in the HP All-in-One when you scan the proof sheet.
111
Chapter 12
Solution The Mac considers the memory card as a type of removable media
such as a CD or floppy disk. You need to drag the image of the memory card
from your desktop to the Trash before you remove the memory card from the
HP All-in-One.
Solution Remove and reinsert the memory card. You might have inserted it
incorrectly. The memory card should be inserted as shown below:
Solution Remove one of the memory cards. You can use only one memory
card at a time.
Solution Check the connection from the HP All-in-One to your computer. Verify
that the USB cable is securely plugged into the USB port on the back of the
HP All-in-One. Make sure the other end of the USB cable is plugged into a USB
112
port on your computer. After the cable is connected properly, turn the HP All-inOne off and then on again.
Solution Restart your computer. If this does not help, uninstall and reinstall the
software that came with the HP All-in-One.
For more information, see:
Uninstall and reinstall the software on page 86
Solution If the HP All-in-One is accessing the memory card, the Proof Sheet
button blinks green. Wait until the Proof Sheet button turns solid green, and try
pressing the button again.

Wrong pen in slot
Low on ink
Cause
Solution Check the estimated ink levels remaining in the print cartridges. If the
print cartridges are low or out of ink, you might need to replace the print cartridges.
Note The HP All-in-One can only detect the ink levels for genuine
HP ink. The ink levels in print cartridges that are refilled or have been
used in other devices, might not register accurately.
If there is ink remaining in the print cartridges, but you are still noticing a problem,
print a self-test report to determine if there is a problem with the print cartridges. If
the self-test report shows a problem, clean the print cartridges. If the problem
persists, you might need to replace the print cartridges.
