CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1

Background to the Study


Study languages in Indonesia recently is not concern just on one language that

Indonesian language as official language but some of language derives from around the
world began to be studied in Indonesian school even they include into the part of the
important study programs. One of them is English. We cant to deny as the international
language English has the significant role to connect people in other country with
complexity of background culture, society, religion, etc. As the language which
categorized as the main course definitely more pay attention in order to in the end of
study, student can reach min requires for pass grade in national exam. There are a lot of
factors to bring English learning process into a good quality for guarantee high standard
in teaching process.
In fact, good quality of learning process in English subject is influenced by
several factors among other: learners, teachers, school facilities and infrastructures
factors. Characteristics of the factors that influence students' learning activities are
studying performance, interest in learning, self-concept, social and cultural background
and economic level of the students, Motivation, level of English teachers' knowledge,
interpersonal communication, and the use of the right strategies in English learning

process. Temporary facilities and infrastructure factors that influence school learning
activities are comfortable classrooms, a quiet, clean and complete learning resource.
One important factor that affects the quality of the learning process is student
interest. Students Interest in learning will determine the choice for learners to perform
the activity in learning process, the high interest learning will be seen from the options
activity or attitude that is very attentive to students' learning activities. High learning
interest of the students will respond with enthusiasm stimulation provided by the
teacher, all the explanations carefully scrutinize teachers do all the tasks assigned by the
teacher.
Meanwhile, on the teacher's strategies and learning model used also greatly
affects the quality of learning activities. There are a variety of learning strategies and
learning models that can be used by teachers to improve the quality of learning.
Strategies and learning model must be adapted to the characteristics of the subjects, the
need for competency standards, as well as the characteristics and number of students.
Student interest in SMP Negeri 1 Bantul, Yogyakarta in English subject is low.
There are a lot of Students do not pay attention to the teachers, do not respond to the
stimulation provided by the teachers, do not do the tasks given by the teacher when
learning process take place. Even many of the students do not bring textbooks.
Students' interest in learning process are low on English subjects will be lower
when the strategy and applied learning model teacher in the learning process do not
variant, monotonous and boring. Learning Method just talks and asks questions, not to

attract students. Learning strategy is not concern on the learner, but based only on
teachers, till make students are lazy to follow the activities of learning.
To overcome the low interest in the learning of the students on the subject of
English, the teacher should choose a wonderful learning. One of the models of learning
that can improve the quality of learning is a model PAIKEM GEMBROT, abbreviation
from Pembelajaran aktif (Active Learning), Inovatif (Innovative), Kreatif (Creative),
Efektif (Effective), Menyenangkan (Fun), Gembira (Happy) and Berbobot (Quality).
1.2 Identification of the Problem
The study focuses on investigating the implementation of PAIKEM GEMBROT
in English teaching and learning process in SMP Negeri 1 Bantul, Yogyakarta. To get
more detailed about it, the problem is identified as follows:
a.) The implementation of learning method still lack to attract student on English
subject.
b.) The low of student interest in English learning process.
c.) Many students do not pay attention to the teachers.
d.) Many students do not respond to the stimulation provided by the teachers
1.3 Limitation of the study
Based on the background of the study and identification of the problem, the
researcher will concern to find the right method in English teaching and learning

process in SMP Negeri 1 Bantul, Yogyakarta. On this research will focus on the
implementation of GEMBROT PAIKEM method.
1.4 Formulation of the Problem
The research focuses on the investigation of the effect of the implementation of
PAIKEM GEMBROT in English teaching and learning process, So, the
formulation of the problems are :
1. How to implement the GEMBROT PAIKEM method in English teaching and
learning process in SMP Negeri 1 Bantul?
2. Is the implementation of GEMBROT PAIKEM method can impact on student
interest in English learning process?
1.5 Objective of the study
This study has an objective to investigate the problems above by investigating
the formulation of the problems, such as :
1. To knowing how to implement the GEMBROT PAIKEM method in English
teaching and learning process in SMP Negeri 1 Bantul.
2. To knowing the impact of the implantation GEMBROT PAIKEM method on
student interest in English learning process.

1.6 Significance of the Study


The researcher hopes this study will be useful for:

1. Students
It is hoped that students can improve students more active to involve in
learning process.
2. English Teacher
Encouraging teacher to find the best method of teaching English to the
students.
3. School
As an input for the use the best method in teaching and learning process and
also of this study will contribute significantly in order to improve learning in the
classroom, improving the quality of schools, and other schools.
4. The writer
The result of the study will answer this questions which are the basic of
study.

Key of Term
a) Implementation

Implementation is the carrying out, execution, or practice of a plan, a


method, or any design for doing something. As such, implementation is the
action that must follow any preliminary thinking in order for something to
actually happen. In an information technology context, implementation
encompasses all the processes involved in getting new software or hardware
operating properly in its environment, including installation, configuration,
running, testing, and making necessary changes. The word deployment is
sometimes used to mean the same thing.
b) PAIKEM GEMBROT
PAIKEM GEMBROT can be defined as: teaching approach (approach to
teaching) is used along with a lot of specific methods and with various teaching
aids and classroom with a seating arrangement of the students so that the
learning process becomes active, innovative, creative, effective, fun, happy, and
quality. Thus, the students feel interested and easy to absorb knowledge and
skills are taught. "PAIKEM GEMBROT" is teaching method with an extension
of Aktif (Active), Inovatif (Innovative), Kreatif (Creative), Efektif (Effective),
Menyenangkan (Fun), Gembira (Happy), and Berbobot (Quality). Teachers can
present the attractive / interesting correspond with measurable outcomes
expected of students (people) learn actively.
c) English Teaching and Learning Process
Teaching-learning process is a planned interaction that promotes
behavioral change that is not a result of maturation or coincidence. On this
research, English will be focused as the object of study.
