The online journal article written by Brown and Thomas is a call to include
the advantages of joining in co-curricular activities instead of academic
attempt. The article focuses on the advantages of joining co-curricular
activities.
The benefits of co-curricular activities include gaining new experience
such as involvement in challenging activities, evolving knowledge and
perform different ways of life (Manaf & Fauzee, 2002). According to Kleese
and DOnofrio (2000), involvement in co-curricular activities expose
student to do things differently which cannot be obtain in a classroom.
Kleese and DOnofrio postulated that work in a team helps participant
enhance their social skills. Moreover, the benefits of doing the cocurricular activities can enhance ones essential value such as allow the
participant to make right decision, increase mental toughness, manage
time properly, develop communication skills and maturity level (Marjohan,
Ahmad, & Sofian, 2007). Acquah and Partey (2013) indicate that
leadership skills can be improve by joining co-curricular activities.
The article is written for students. Robinson and Thomas have developed
the article well by supporting their arguments with reliable knowledge.
This makes the article objective as they present appropriate facts and
acceptable examples. The article is also reader friendly as the authors
have used simple language that is both clear and factual. The authors
tone is optimistic as the authors focus on the benefit of joining the cocurricular activities. The article is useful as it provides clear
understandings into the benefit of joining the co-curricular activities.
However, one weakness in the article is that the author has failed to
acknowledge the difficulties that participant might face by joining the cocurricular activities. It would be better if the author had provided
suggestions on strategies to help participant overcome these challenges.
