The industry needs to ask itself how leadership

development became so elitist. The worlds

challenges are big enough now that we need to
think about how we can democratise leadership
development
- David Altman,
Executive Vice President, Center for Creative Leadership

The Problem
Our nation, and the world at large, is in urgent need
of a new generation of leaders who bring a diversity
of experience and approach to craft innovative
solutions for the many problems faced by the planet
and those who inhabit it."
- Ken Olisa OBE, Founding Chairman - Powerlist
Foundation

Nearly 60% of companies face leadership talent

shortages.
- Sue Ashford and Scott DeRue
Harvard Business Review (2016)

The Solution
The Powerlist Foundation was created to provide
significant lifetime opportunities for young people with the
main focus of identifying, recruiting and developing
leaders for the future.
"Those leaders (our members) possess the educational
foundations, mental capacity, moral foundation,
confidence and humility required to inspire others to find
common cause and to strive for the improvement of
society at large."
- Ken Olisa OBE, Founding Chairman - Powerlist
Foundation

"Thank you for organising what has turned out to be a wonderful

four days. I'm pretty sure that the
large majority of things taught to us
would: one, ever have been for free;
and two, never have been taught to
us before business school. I'm
incredibly grateful for being selected
to be on the programme, being able
to learn about myself as a leader as
well as being able to network and
make some life-long friends."

Our Vision
To be globally recognised as leading the way in
developing the next generation of leaders.

This programme really has been life changing I feel

incredibly blessed to have been part of the students
chosen. I have learnt so many life lessons such as
how to be courageous and go for what you want and I
have also gained life long friends. Words aren't
enough to express my gratitude for everyone who
made this programme a reality.
- Jessica Magaye
Alumni of the 2016 Powerlist Foundation Leadership Programme

Sharing Success With

Tomorrows Leaders
The Powerlist Foundation is a distinctive, inclusive and diverse organisation with leadership and personal development
at its core. Young people are encouraged to learn not just from the world class speakers and mentors but from each
other through numerous group activities that prompt reflection and interaction and also serve to build rapport.
Almost 300 young people (university undergraduates) from across the country have already benefitted from our highly
acclaimed leadership development programme and the outcomes are clear to see.
Our approach to leadership development includes:
Talks and discussions with established and influential leaders. From CEOs of publicly traded companies to
leaders in politics and the arts.
Our mentorship programme. We connect each young person with professional mentors who we feel will be able to
best serve their growth as a leader.
One on one coaching. Throughout and after our leadership programme, we provide opportunities for young people
to receive advice specific to their needs and their unique personal growth challenges.
Expert workshops. We partner with various industry professionals to share practical skills with our members that they
would not normally have access to i.e. personal impact and effective networking, leading high performing teams,
developing and building their personal brand.
Self analysis. Understanding your strengths and weaknesses plays a huge part in becoming a better leader. Self
analysis includes competency assessment,

It makes little sense to begin executive

development processes at very senior levels,
as many companies do. Instead the process
must start early.
- Morgan McCall, Jr.
Academy of Management Executive

Diversifying Leadership
Traditionally society tends to search for its leaders in the same places. From the
same schools, the same networks and even the same families. However, history
has proven time and again that great leaders are found in all areas of society.
By ignoring leadership potential from various groups of young people, society is
wasting leadership potential and significantly reducing the likelihood of finding
the leaders the world will need tomorrow.
The Powerlist Foundation activity seeks out, identifies and supports young
people who show great promise in leadership from groups that are often over
looked. As a result we are helping to increase the leaders available to serve as
well as increasing the standards of leadership across the board.
Leaders from different backgrounds bring new ideas, new experience and new
understanding. Therefore by diversifying the leadership talent pool, everybody
wins.

First the industry needs to embrace the

challenge of finding a new approach to
leadership development and we havent done
that yet We need to let go of the old mental
models and find the people out there on the
fringe. - Lucy Dinwiddie
Executive Development Leader, General Electric

Our Future
We have come a long way since our first leadership programme in
2011. That year we worked with 38 carefully selected young people
of African and Caribbean descent who demonstrated leadership
potential and experience socioeconomic disadvantages. We have
positively altered the lives of close to 300 young people aged 18-25
who are now members of the Powerlist Foundation network.
Our focus is on significantly scaling the reach and impact of our
leadership programme and activities. We plan to do this by
attracting new groups of university undergraduates and non
graduates from a wider range of universities, holding multiple
leadership programmes throughout the year and expanding our
work to other areas in the UK.

"An understanding of leadership is crucial if you are

to be successful."

- Kyomi Wade,
Alumni of the 2011 Powerlist Foundation Leadership Programme,
now Digital Marketing Executive at AITO

How You Can Support Us

1. Become a corporate partner
2. Become a corporate sponsor

Having the mentors was really valuable and just

being able to network with them... It helped my
confidence in talking to people of that stature in their
career but also made me realise that these people
have stories too and that this is just the start of mine.
Having someone to look up to and guide you through
an experience was awesome!

Partnering With Us
We work closely with our corporate partners to deliver our leadership programme to the highest
standards in order to achieve the greatest impact possible through our work.
Benefits of partnership
All our partners benefit from the access we provide to the best and brightest minds which we attract to
our leadership programme. This can be leveraged to create key insights and research for your
company through activities such as hackathons and mastermind sessions. Our delegates have helped
firms solves problems around diversity, retention, attraction, inclusion, leadership development, new
products and services, career progression and marketing campaigns.
Our partners benefit from the direct associations with Powerlist Foundation brand. This will help your
organisation to be seen as a leader in leadership development, diversity, social mobility and of course
a company's approach to corporate social responsibility.
What we ask in return
We ask all of our partners to contribute to the resources we use to deliver our leadership
programmes. This can include but is not limited to: venues, consulting/advice, pro bono services,
volunteersandmentors. In our experience of delivering a successful programme, we have found that
it's crucial thatour partners are also able to provide support from its leadership team, especially with
executiveswhose vision aligns with ours.

I think it was one of the few if not only programme

where the lessons actually became ingrained within me.
So now, I actually will be able to network without being
shy etc. The environment created by the follow
delegates and speakers was supportive enough that I
was able to push myself out of my comfort zone.
- Rachel Umunna
2014 Powerlist Foundation Leadership Programme Alumni,
Imperial College London Masters Graduate

Sponsoring Us
Our corporate sponsors play a crucial role in helping
to fund the work that we do. Allowing us keep the
work we do free for the young people who would
never otherwise have access to leadership
development. We understand that each organisation
has a different approach and capacity to financially
support the work we do, which is why we have
created different tier sponsorship packages.

"We identify, recruit and train young men and

women who can demonstrate that their selfworth, engagement, and purpose qualify them
to accept the responsibility of leadership."
-

Ken Olisa OBE,

Engaged employees are happier and more

productive, but CSR has benefits even beyond
the trickle-down productivity of high employee
engagement. Research suggests that
involvement in the companys corporate
responsibility practices teaches workers
valuable new skills that they bring back to their
regular roles for the company.
