World of Home Textiles : Profiles of

Monforts Reference Customers
Who are Leading Producers of Home Textiles
As was reflected at the highly successful Heimtextil
2016 in Frankfurt, the home textiles market is currently extremely healthy. It is a very important growth
engine for those countries to which the textile industry currently contributes significantly to improving living standards.
As noted in this report, Pakistan, is now enjoying
tremendous business within the European Union as
a result of a new trade agreement, but Bangladesh,
India, Turkey and of course China, also continue to
flourish. Home textiles, however, are equally important to countries like Germany, where the manufacturing of commodity apparel products is no longer
viable. The latest performance figures from the Association of the German Home Textiles Industry are
very encouraging, especially when it comes to exports, but the total of 2,866 global companies present
at Heimtextil 2016 suggest a highly competitive, if
not over-crowded market place.

Pakistan makes the most of GSPplus

At the start of 2014, Pakistans new
GSP-plus status came into effect with
the European Union; ensuring that Pakistan home textiles manufacturers
pay no tax on the goods they sell to
the 27-nation bloc for ten years. This
has given the industry a clear advantage over several important competitors, including India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and, not least, China.
As a consequence, Pakistans Commerce Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan
announced in late 2014 that textile exports to the EU increased by over $1
billion in the first ten months of the year.
Before GSP- plus, textile exports faced
customs tariffs of between 6.4 and
12%.

major operation based on its strategy
of keeping short lines of communication and making rapid, but well thoughtout decisions in response to market
requirements.
Today, its diversified range of products
allows customers to mix and match
from a wide variety of prints, yarn dyed
fabrics, solids, dobbies and jacquards.

The complete production is exported

Our finishing department relies on the
four excellent Monforts stenters and
the Thermosol dyeing unit we have installed, says Marketing Manager
Anjum Munir, who did his training with
Monforts at the Mnchengladbach
headquarters in Germany.
We are widely known for fine quality
printing, dyeing and finishing, as well
as for our extensive knowledge of fibre chemistry.
Gohar has recently added a high speed
spinning unit at its plant in Faisalabad,
to become further vertically integrated,
and it now has the capacity to produce
200,000 metres of fully finished fabric
every day.

It specialises in processing woven and

knitted fabrics starting from T-120 - T400 thread count, and including 100%
cotton satins, cotton and poly cotton

Understanding the expectations and

requirements of the international textile market, the company is also operating its own power generation plant to
provide uninterrupted production and
ensure the global timelines of its customers are honoured with top priority.

The companys dyeing and finishing

Monforts : Your 24/7 Partner

As the first textile trade fair of the year, Heimtextil 2016, showcased the
products of a record 2,866 companies involved in the global trade of fabrics
for home furnishings over 20 halls. They included many Monforts customers
who have recognised that advanced processing and functional new finishes
remain the keys to standing out in what is a highly commoditised market.
Exhibitors came from 69 countries, with 89% of the companies present
being from outside Germany - all keen to do business in the EU trading

MUSTAQIM PRINTING & DYEING

Sustainable initiatives at Mustaqim
General Export Manager, Shahid
Hasan, explained that Cotton made in
Africa (CMIA) is an initiative of the Aid
by Trade Foundation (AbTF) which
helps people to help themselves
through trade, in order to improve the
living conditions of cotton farmers and
their families in sub-Saharan Africa.
Smallholders from Cte d'Ivoire,
Ghana, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Malawi,
Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe are currently participating in CMIA.
Training courses teach the cotton farmers modern, efficient and environmentally-friendly cultivation methods which
help them to improve the quality of
their cotton, generate higher yields and
therefore earn a better income for them
and their families.
The Better Cotton Initiative (BCI),
meanwhile, is a not-for-profit
organisation stewarding the global
standards for Better Cotton, and bringing together cottons complex supply
chain, from farmers to retailers.
Sustainable manufacturing is very
important to us, said Director, Saad

We have also converted all of our stan-

Germanys own manufacturers of textiles for the home furnishings market,

however, are currently buoyant, according to the Association of the German
Home Textiles Industry.
The revenue generation of Germanys overall textile industry in 2015 was
Euros 11 billion, with Euros 3 billion accounted for by suppliers of fabrics for
home furnishings - and over 40% achieved from export trade.
The key markets for these high quality German fabrics include contract fittings for hotel chains, cruise ships and planes.
Despite an extremely uncertain global economy, the outlook for German home
textile manufacturers continues to be positive, with record employment and
wages rising. Interest charges meanwhile remain low, as do energy prices.
Perhaps understandably, many German textile manufacturers are currently
taking the opportunity to expand their capacities.
Monforts is proud to assist its customers wherever they are in the world, with
an international network of branches and agents and the latest digital communication platforms ensuring 24/7 service.

Advanced finishing is at the heart of
everything the company does, having

focus on added-value wet and dry finishing operations and to invest in the
best machines available for each process.
Everything produced goes through the
stenter at least once, and often twice.
If the fabrics are mercerised, they then
go through the stenter again, and if
coated or printed, stentering also follows.

In the treatment of face-to-face velvets, meanwhile, the even backing

applied on the Montex stenter is essential for achieving accurate pile anchorage.
Another winning introduction by the
company was Easy Outdoor - a protective finish on the companys latest

carried out over the past two years.
The programme included installing new
finishing equipment, adding a further
plant for nonwovens manufacturing and
new automated assembly machines.
And the growth wont stop there.
During 2016 the company plans to further expand its site at Borken to house
two new printing machines and a modern ink dispensing kitchen at a cost of

Since it already has an annual printing

The company puts its success in part
down to the safety and sustainability
of its modern European production
equipment - including a Montex 6500.
With a working width of 2.8 m the seven
chamber unit is operated in three shifts
around the clock and processing up to
80,000 metres of fabrics daily.
To further increase versatility, the
Montex has been supplied with a coating device, allowing specialist materials - such as the dot-coated cleaning
towels for industrial kitchens which are
a Bierbaum Group speciality - to be
produced in-line.
The line is also equipped with an integrated heat recovery unit via which
waste heat produced in the thermal
process, and contained in the exhaust,
air is discharged via exhaust air ducts
directly into a heat exchanger.
Given current energy costs, producing as efficiently as possible is a decisive factor, said a company spokesman.
The energy consumption of all our
machines is closely monitored and we
are also exploring methods of developing more cost-effective solutions.
We have always used Monforts
stenters and are very satisfied with
them.
The automation of such machinery
along with the dedication and motivation of our staff here in Germany has
resulted in our production costs becoming lower, while at the same time, reliability has increased.

major player in home furnishing fabrics, Boyteks, headquartered in Bursa,
Turkey, has over 100 separate branded products which are distinguished

Staying cool is very important to getting a good nights sleep, explained
Marketing Specialist Aydin Aydin.
The body needs to experience a natural drop in temperature when falling
asleep, but the ambient temperature
of the room can sometimes prevent
this.
Cooler mattress ticking fabrics provide that cooling effect, helping you fall
asleep more easily and max imising
sleep quality by providing a relaxing

Boyteks has emerged as a major
player in the home furnishings market
in a comparatively short period of time.
Founded in 1999, the company began
international sales activities two years
later. It now exports to no less than
103 countries.
At Heimtextil 2016, the company showcased three of its latest innovations,
including the new Cooler heat transfer
technology for mattresses.

Biorythmic-branded fabrics have been

developed to promote a sense of well
being via the integration of a combination of minerals known to activate the
medians in the body with their vibration energy.
Minerals have been employed over
centuries in alternative therapies to
promote body communication and enhance relaxation, says Boyteks Marketing Manager Gkmen Kara.

can cause many negative effects, leading to insomnia, stress and tiredness.
These fabrics help the body to feel
more comfortable and rejuvenated as
a result of the special combination of
minerals.
Meanwhile, household items such as
furniture and carpets can emit hazardous gases and odour into the air, with
potentially detrimental effects on
health, causing headaches, nausea
and eye irritations, in addition to exacerbating allergies.
Triple Fresh fabrics
Boyteks Triple Fresh fabrics have been
designed to combat this by cleaning
the environment air.
These
fabrics
contain
a
speciallyformulated metal complex that
acts as a three-way catalyst to decompose hazardous gases such as formaldehyde, ammonia, acetic acid and
nicotine.
As a consequence, these materials
actually diffuse unwanted odours rather
than masking or confining them.
The effect is permanent and wash resistant, so will not diminish over time.
The company has also invested in a
succession of capacity expansions,
most recently opening its carpet manufacturing plant in 2011 and adding warp
knitting to its range of manufacturing
technologies a year later.

Textile Sector : Risk Analysis & Assessment

RISK ASSESSMENT

Highlights

Strengths

Textile Demand

Textile sales remain upbeat in North

America, but much less so in Western
Europe. France and the UK saw a yearon-year fall in sales of 0.5% and 0.2%,
respectively. This is the first time the
United Kingdom has seen a downturn
since July 2012. However, households
in both countries are finding themselves better off and the major brands
are experiencing growth in online sales.
In emerging Asia, textile production
remains hampered by China's decision
to limit duty-free cotton imports since
2013. However, Chinese industrials
have been sourcing quality cotton from
outside the country, which is driving
up production costs.

- Growing middle class in emerging countries

After three seasons of mediocre growth

(2012-2015), global demand for cotton
is expected to have fallen by 2.4% between the July-July 2015/2016 season,
according to the EIU. However, consumption in developed countries looks
set to continue to grow in 2016, firming up the demand for textiles. Nevertheless, the strong dollar risks exerting a downward pressure on demand
by increasing the cost of imports. This
is particularly the case with South
America, which has the additional problem of subdued household spending.

- Fall in prices of cotton and synthetic fibres

- Growth drivers via e-commerce
Weaknesses
- Substantial cotton stocks in
China, where destocking is hampering demand on the global market
- Sluggish demand in Latin America
- Downturn in US sales

Retail sales of textiles (January 2014 = 100)

Sources: National Statistics

The textile sector is marked by an increasing trend to replace cotton with

synthetic fibres (polyester, acrylic, viscose). Globally, cotton accounted for
only one-third of textile consumption
in 2014 versus one-half in 1994. In
Europe, synthetic fibres accounted for
54% of textile consumption in 2013,
according to Eurostat. Cheaper, easy
to mix with other fibres and more environmentally friendly than cotton, synthetic fibres represent the technological progress of the textile sector. Moreover, there has historically been a correlation between the price of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and that of
oil, from which it is derived. In June
2016, with oil prices having fallen 40%
year-on-year, the cost of PET fell by
20% and returned to the level seen in
early 2009, thus making synthetic fibres even more competitive compared to cotton.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS PAGES

In the United States, unemployment
has risen slightly to 5.2% in the first
half 2016, which is likely to affect consumer spending on clothes. But in the
region as a whole, textile sales should
continue to grow in 2016, following on
the good momentum seen at the end
of 2015, especially in Canada (+6.8%
in volume). In 2016, with unemployment inflection in the European Union
is continuing to record healthy sales,
even though the situation is not quite
as positive as on the other side of the
Atlantic, because 10.3% of working
age European were still unemployed
in the first half of 2016.
Since September 2015, the growth in
retail clothing sales has slowed down
considerably in the UK, but has recovered slightly in France. The big European economies are having difficulties
boosting their textile consumption, and
are unlikely to be able to mobilise the
clothing sector in 2016.
Emerging Asia will remain the most
dynamic market in 2016. This is despite the fact that demand for cotton
in China, the world's biggest importer,
is expected to fall 5.5% in 2016. Nevertheless, China is still seeing two-figure growth in its clothing sales. In value
terms, demand was up 11.6% in 2015
(vs. 10.7% in 2014), and is expected
to increase a further 10.9% in 2016,
according to the EIU.
This momentum can also be seen from
the sales posted by the large international groups. The Inditex group (Zara
and others) has forecast a 15% rise in
turnover in 2015/2016. China and the
United States will remain the two most
buoyant markets in terms of store
openings in 2016. Also, the growth in
online sales is giving a new boost to
existing markets. This is the case for
H&M with, in particular, openings
scheduled for 2016 in Japan, Ireland
and the Baltic states, following on from
many European countries in 2015 (inter alia, Switzerland, Portugal and Belgium). The momentum being shown by
these big groups, which offer several
collections every year, and the result-

ing economies of scale, has meant that

clothing is now much cheaper around
the globe. Although, on the one hand,
this is bad news for some of the more
long-standing brands (in France, for
example), global demand is rallying
thanks to the presence of these large
groups. Clothes are now more affordable for consumers, and the rapid renewal of ranges means a more comprehensive offer.
Textile Supply
Cotton production is declining amid listless global demand. The latest global
cotton harvest (July 2015) was relatively stable (-0.4% in volume terms),
but it is expected to decrease by nearly
16% in 2016, making it the fourth consecutive year of decline.
Despite a smaller drop in production in
2015, prices look set to continue to fall
in 2016. The start of 2016 (average over
the first five months) saw a fall of only
4%, although figures slumped the previous year (down 21% in 2014-2015).
Cheaper prices are even more inevitable due to stock surpluses, despite
the downturn in production predicted
for 2016. These stocks should represent around 10 months of consumption in 2016, compared to 10.7 the previous year. With 12 million tonnes
(compared to 3 million five years ago),
Chinese reserves account for 60% of
global cotton stocks, i.e. 18 months of
consumption.
In 2013, the Chinese government introduced import quotas in order to force
the textile sector to use domestic cotton. Non-quota imports (over 894,000
tonnes) are subject to a 40 percent
tariff. However, although gross stock
levels should fall by 8% by July 2016,
their proportion of total demand (which
is falling) will only drop by 0.7 points
compared to the previous year. This reduction in demand, expected to be
5.5% in 2016, is consistent with the
downward trend in imports by volume
(down 20% between 2014 and 2015,
after a 26% fall between 2013 and
2014). In fact, cotton stocks should
NCM-OCTOBER 2016
72

remain high in the short term, and

gradually decrease. It will nevertheless
take time for supply to adapt to this
declining demand. Cotton prices should
therefore remain low, at least until the
Chinese quotas are scrapped in late
2016.
Other cotton producing countries are
experiencing a similar pattern to that
seen in China. Although the fall has
been less remarkable in India, where
it is expected to drop by 9.4% in 2016,
the USA and Pakistan (the world's 3rd
and 4th biggest producers) should experience a much steeper decline in
2016.
After a record increase in cotton harvests in 2015, the United States will
probably post a marked fall in 2016 of
21% due to concerns about demand
from China, its largest client. Finally,
with forecasts predicting a 34% decline
in 2016, Pakistan continues to be affected by an unreliable power supply.
The fall in cotton prices has not made
it possible to improve competitiveness
as prices of synthetic materials have
followed the same trend. Emerging
Asia is home to nearly 90% of global
polyester production. The comparative
advantages of synthetic materials outweigh those of cotton, the use of which
will continue to decrease. In the long
term, demographic growth will encourage greater farming of arable land. The
moderation of cotton prices and the
increase in demand for food will drive
farms to switch to more profitable
crops.

Sometimes, in order to take a step

forward, you need
to take a step
back.

The wet processing direct suppliers list names those suppliers where we hold a direct sourcing relationship.
The wet processing indirect suppliers list includes mills that have been contracted by our direct suppliers.
Indirect suppliers normally perform manufacturing operations the main suppliers are not capable of doing in their

list is heavily dependent on the disclosure provided to us by our direct suppliers, who have the business direct
relationship with these wet processes mills.
This direct and indirect wet processing suppliers list always describes the current status of our active business

Increase Apparel Conversions with These Sizing Tips
Pamela Hazelton
Many women (and men) will tell you
that buying clothes and shoes online
is difficult, primarily because of sizing.
Zappos does well with its free shipping both ways policy, but the wait time
to exchange an item can be frustrating.
Big etailers often fail when it comes to
providing accurate sizes due to using
across-the-board size charts, regardless of brand. Couple that with the fact
that many brands are not consistent
with sizing and you have a recipe for
returns.
J.C. Penney uses generic size charts
for many of the brands it carries. This
can lead to dissatisfaction and increase
returns.
A flexible return policy is nice, but what
shoppers really want is accuracy. So
when presenting products where exact
sizing is important, be sure to include
the following.
How the item was measured. An illustration is useful here.
Kohls provides illustrative instructions
on how to measure for a proper fit.

JC Penney explains how to measure.

Specific measurements for each brand
or clothing type. There is no catchall
when it comes to how brands size
clothing. A small in one brand may
be a medium in another. Kohls.com
recently transitioned from generic size
charts to brand specific.
Measurements of the flat article, if
possible. Since people tend to measure their own body differently, measurements of the clothing itself can
help, especially with tops.

International sizing. A size 6 in the U.S.
can translate to a size 10 in the U.K.
or Australia. By including conversions
you can provide vital info to a broader
audience.
The fit. Tops come in regular, semi- and
slim-fit, and pants are typically fitted
as slim, classic, straight, and relaxed.
When clothing is available in various
size types misses, petites, plus
size product images of various
models is ideal. Shirts, for example,
will look vastly different on a size 6
woman than it will on a size 16.
Body Types
Dont forget body types, which make
a big difference in how an item will fit.
Generally women fall across one of the
following body types: pear, apple, rectangle, inverted triangle, or hourglass.
What looks good on an hourglass frame
may look horrible on a woman who falls
under pear-shaped. This is determined
by the cut of the shirt or dress. So if
the manufacturer has provided shaping details, be sure to include it in the
product description and size chart.

J.C. Penney uses generic size charts for many of the brands it carries.
This can lead to dissatisfaction and increase returns.

When it comes to pants or jeans, the

fit plays a big role because the sizing
is based on where the tops of the pants
sit and how it is designed in the seat.
Including the fit details is key, and
some sites categorize or tag bottoms
by fit just as they would the actual size.
J.C. Penney explains the fit of the pants
it sells and lets shoppers select the fit
as part of the filtering process.
Customer Reviews
Sadly, not all manufacturers provide the
best details. Customer reviews are key,
and many shoppers rely on them to
determine the exact size to buy. Use
reviews to better explain overall sizing.

J.C. Penney also explains how to measure, despite the retailer using
generic size charts across many brands.

Some customers wont think of mentioning whether or not sizing was accurate. So be sure to ask questions or

provide additional fields to collect this key info. This can not only help close
more sales, but also locate problem products that should be dropped from your
stores offerings.

Vietnam : Textile & garment companies still
attract foreign investors
Though growth in investment in the
textile & garment sector has slowed
down, it is still attractive in foreign
investors eyes.
The years 2014 and 2015 witnessed
the massive landing of foreign textile
& garment enterprises in Vietnam. In
2015 alone, $2 billion worth of foreign
direct investment (FDI) capital was
poured into the textile & garment sector. The three biggest projects alone
have registered capital of $1 billion.
Hyosung Dong Nai, a Turkish invested
yarn manufacturer, has investment
capital of $660 million.
Meanwhile, a textile & garment material factory developed by Polytex Far
Eastern from Taiwan has registered
capital of $274 million, and Worldon
Vietnam, a Hong Kong invested enterprise, $160 million.
However, the wave of FDI pouring into
the textile & garment sector has
reached a lull this year. According to
the Foreign Investment Agency (FIA),
the list of large FDI projects registered
in the first five months of the year did
not include textile & garment projects.
Meanwhile, the projects capitalized at
hundreds of millions of dollars were all
in paper production, real estate, electronics and wind power.
Pham Xuan Hong, Chair of the HCM
City Textile, Clothing, Embroidery and
Knitting, commented that foreign investors have decided to delay their
projects because they need to waitfor
news about TPP (Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement), not because they
see problems in Vietnam economy.
Nguyen Hong Giang, deputy chair of
the Vietnam Cotton & Yarn Association, commented that though capital

flow has slowed, Vietnam is still very

attractive to foreign investors.
Giang cited a report of the US Fashion
Industry Association as saying that
68.8 percent of foreign retailers and
brands want to choose Vietnam as the
top-priority destination point if they
have to shift orders from China.
In the past, Bangladesh was the priority country. However, with complicated
political issues, the country is no
longer as popular.
Vietnam has attractive production
costs and preferential tariffs.
The production costs in Vietnam, including expenses for land, energy and
labor, are much lower than that in
China. Vietnams exports can enjoy
preferential tariffs thanks to FTAs between Vietnam and Japan, VietnamSouth Korea and Vietnam-EU.
Therefore, Giang believes the FDI wave
will continue in the time to come, while
the information about the election in
the US will be a factor in pushing the
Chinese second FDI wave in Vietnam.
Commenting about the fact that Vietnam has lost big orders to the hands
of its rivals, including Cambodia and
Myanmar, Giang said there are problems with world demand.
He cited a report of a consultancy firm
NCM-OCTOBER 2016

as saying that the number of orders

placed with Cambodian producers has
dropped by 30 percent.

How Rwanda can boost

the textile industry
In 2015, government moved to phase
out importation of used clothing and
footwear. The aim was to achieve selfreliance and boost local production.
According to Francois Kanimba, the
Minister for Trade and Industry, the
decision to ban used clothes emanated
from the need to promote local production, among others. It was discovered
that import of used clothes was stifling local production.
According to experts, the importation
of used clothes only meant continuous suffocation of the local textile industry. As a measure to protect the
local textile industry, this year, government through the Ministry of Finance
and Economic Planning increased
taxes on used clothes from $0.20 to
$2.50 per kg. Equally, import tariffs on
used footwear were raised from $0.50
to $5 per Kg a decision that took effect on July 1st 2016.
Claver Gatete, the Finance and Economic Planning minister says the idea
is to increase local production by attracting more investors into the
countrys textile industry.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS PAGES

He says government is taking yet another bold step to waive taxes on raw
materials used in textile production.
Minister Gatete was speaking during
a consultative meeting with textile
manufactures and used clothing importers to convey the new steps government is taking to promote local production. According to Gatete, Cabinet
has decided to remove import duties
on fabrics and accessories to boost
the textile sector and export promotion.
We are currently working with the
Ministry of Trade and Industry together
with Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA)
to make sure by end of October everything is in place to start the waivers, Gatete said.

The bigger question however is

whether such initiatives will actually
translate into increased production and
low cost of production. Sector experts
argue that boosting the local textile
industry requires more than tax waivers and the ban on second hand
clothes. While they welcome the government initiative, sector players say
that government and sector players
need to further look at more ways to
reduce the cost of production.
Celeste Impundu, the Managing Director, Inzuki designs says ensuring sustainable and affordable supply of electricity and water, itself is an incentive
towards boosting local textile industry.
This is because when you look at inputs in terms of utility bills, the cost is
still high and will most likely be transferred to the final consumer thus affecting the industry, he said adding
that encouraging local production
should be done in consideration of that
aspect.
Jelome Mugabo, the managing director, Kigali Garment Center Ltd, says
there should be a deliberate strategy
to produce raw materials for textile industry locally. The cost of production
is often high because the country imports almost everything thing in terms

of raw materials; it is therefore very
imperative to source them locally, he
noted. More so, government is supporting the establishment of Kigali Garment Centre Ltd.
Current measures to promote domestic production
Minister Kanimba says, government is
currently working with stakeholders to
establish a textile industrial park in the
country. We are looking at securing
more than100ha of land and hope to

idea is to make it easy for those investing in textile production acquire
land, Minister Kanimba noted.
Besides, the National Agriculture Export Board (NAEB) is supporting farmers in sericulture and cocoon production centres.
The export body recently signed a deal
with a Korean-based company,
HEWorks Rwanda to improve silk production in the country. According to the

agreement the company will invest up
to $5.1 million into silk production. This
according to Clare Mukantwali, the
chairperson Association of Professional Tailors (APT) will boost the sector in terms of raw materials. According to Eric Mbonigaba, the National
Sericulture Centre manager, 20 hectares of land have already been allocated in Rwamagana District for mulberry production.
For the foot wear, Kanimba says 15ha
have of land been earmarked in
Bugesera Industrial Park for a Tannery
Park. In fact, government Increased
tariffs on exports of raw hides and
skins to encourage production of
leather and foot ware in the country.
Kigali Leather has been supported to
start production of footwear with
Rwantan Company acquiring land to
start production.
The minister said they are banking on
Made in Rwanda Campaign to sensitize the public about locally made products while working with WDA to help in
sharpening skills required by the industry.
Reducing import bills

Sector experts are hopeful, the current

initiatives will help reduce the importation of textile products in the country. For example, the importation of second hand clothes averaged at $18.3m
per year between 2010-2015. According to statistics from Ministry of Trade
and Industry, imports have been increasing from $10.7m in 2010 to $24m
in 2015. This is a lot of money which
Rwanda can save and have it invested
in other sectors, said Felicite
Nyampundu, an economist at Business
Professionals Network.
Importation of used clothes has
started reducing since tax hikes were
first enforced in July this year. On average 2.5 million Kgs of second hand
clothes were being imported per
month prior to the new tariff, however
this reduced to only 28,000Kg imported
since the new tariffs were introduced
reflecting 99% drop in imports.

Local RMG production projections

According to MINICOM, the overall
market size for clothing is expected to
continue to grow as the economy grows
with domestic production projected to
overtake second hand imports by 2020.
Import of used clothes is still expected
to continue but at a lower rate than the
rest of the clothing market, Minister
Kanimba noted.
According to experts, phasing out second hand clothes is expected to cause
changes, and also create new opportunities for market players. The value
of imported wear products, both new
and second hand clothes, cost over
$100 million out of which 80% or $80
million (Rwf60 billion) were textile

The government recently signed agreements with two investors to establish
new clothing and shoe factories at the
newly-demarcated Apparel Manufacturing Zone at the Kigali Special Economic Zone. The Apparel Manufacturing Zone (AMZ) currently occupies 5
hectares in Kigali Special Economic

The first agreement was signed between the Ministry of Trade and Industry and Prime Economic Zones Ltd, for
