Same sex adoption by Mario Alejandro Medina

This has been a problem that is Becoming each time more relevant on this country. It
started as the equal right to getting married with the same sex and now it has escalated to
this. The subject has been very problematic in the last months since a politician called
Viviane Morales did the effort to gather enough signatures to dictate if this subject should
be decided by the participatory democracy. And so far the proposal has gone interrupted
and it could be possible that is going to be a referendum.
The columnist Rodrigo Uprimny explained very well whats at stake in this kind of
discussion. In the news site: La Silla Vacia 1 he explained that there were many faces in
this discussion and I think it is important to take them into account before issuing any
judgment.
The first argument is that some people that are against adoption think that having a love
relation with the same sex is nothing but an abomination. No attention in rights is worth
putting on these couples because they are profane and go against nature laws. They are
sick people and for that reason they shouldnt be able to have children under their care.
This way of thinking is what is known as homophobic and is dangerous for a country that
already accepts the diversity and differences among its people. But is this kind of
approach to the debate is less pronounced in the public debate because of its political
incorrectness.
Other kind of argument against adoption is that the same sex marriage is commonly
mistreated and looked down upon. Its a kind of union that is subject to all kinds of
discriminations and putting a child inside this marriage would be a big mistake because the
kind can be a target to this kind a behavior. He or she would grow on a difficult
environment that could be bad for his mental health and rights as a human being.
Other notion states that is bad for a child to be raised by a couple of men or a couple of
women, because he needs to be in contact with influence of both sex. A healthy child will
get the love of his mother and the toughness of his father, he will learn qualities form both
sex, that there are things that a woman can teach that a man cant, or the other way. Only
a heterosexual couple can educate an integral human that is a part of our society.
Many that are against this kind of adoption will say that the right of the children to have a
good life free of discrimination and a good education is more important than the right of a
group to be taken into account as possible adoptive parents.
Now I will deconstruct each argument and explain how absurd it is. About the homophobia
and this kind of couples being viewed as monster because they dont do something thats
natural, it can be said that there are a lot of things that are not natural in society, but that
does not mean is wrong or is bad. Certain conducts as not killing what you eat are not
natural, washing your body with soap or sitting on a desk for hour. Natural is something

that applies to animals, but we are humans, we have a society that regulates a lot of what
we do, so whats natural or is not natural doesnt matter what matters is: is if youre being
intervening another person being. Society is a fictitious structure that explains our reality
and therefore something viewed as bad is not always as problematic for other person lifes
as it is the case with same sex couples.
The politician Claudia Lopez on and interview from the magazine Semana 2, declare that
heterosexual families where the ones that abandoned the children that now await an
adoption, even some of them were mistreated so bad that the state had to take them off
their families. The argument of Lopez is that if heterosexual families are so perfect for a
child then they would not be for adoption. what matters is the right of the children to have a
family, then a same sex couple can supply that and it is even better if it contributes to
creating an even more diverse country. Also if you say that a couple thats being
discriminated should not adopt then you could also say that a couple that belong to a
certain race that is prone to being discriminates should not adopt. The problem isnt the
couple, the problem is the society that thinks that the couple is less because they are the
same sex.
The problem of the child not being socialized by two Different sex has a very deep
presumption that mines the argument. The point is that they are confusing the difference
between gender and sex. You are born with a sex; it can be a penis a vagina or both. But
you are not born with a gender, you learn it. As the sociologist Judith butler explain in her
video Your Behavior Creates Your Gender3 you learn to perform your gender, you learn to
walk that way to be tough as a man or be sissy as a girl, you learn not to cry or to cry a lot,
to like pink or to like blue. For instance you can be a woman and be masculine, and
therefore you will look like a man and behave like one you dont even need to have a penis
to walk talk and see the world like a man sees it. So what we think about how a man
should be like or a woman should behave, is a pattern that has been learn from generation
to generation.
So that means that the kid need both genders to be well educated? No, he can learn that
from anyone, and he does not need to learn it as those are not qualities that are valuable
for the person but just a way to interact with the world. And just the way he is seen. Men
and woman are equal and both can teach the same things.
So we should not be fooled by the prejudices that are constructed socially and culturally.
We should give this children the right to be adopted and the same sex couples should be
able to give that to them. So in the future we will have a more diverse and tolerant country,
full of different ways to see life. I think that same sex couples and family-less children

need each other because of the hard situations that those groups have live and the
government should not interfere in that
