Definition 1. Let A and B be nonemptysets, the function f from A to B is a pairing up
elements of A and B such that each element of A is paired up to one element of B. A is called the domain and B is called the range If x A and y B, in notation we write the function f as y = f (x). In laymans term, x is called the input (or pre-image) and y = f (x) is called the output (or image). Remark 1. Function, can be define as one-to-one or many-to-one pairing. Example 1. Which of the following pairing is a function? 1. A = students in this section B=months in a year f : birthmonth of the student 2. A = students in this section B = animals f : pet of the students 3. A = months in a year B = students in this section f : student whose birthday is on the given month 4. A = students in this section B = counting numbers f : SSS number of the student Remark 2. All the functions that we will consider here are functions whose domain and range are the set of real numbers. Definition 2. Let f and g be two functions, 1. (f + g)(x) = f (x) + g(x) 2. (f g)(x) = f (x) g(x) 3. (f g)(x) = f (x) g(x)
(x) 4. fg (x) = fg(x) 5. (f g)(x) = f (g(x)) Example 2. Let f (x) = x2 + 5x 2 and g(x) = 4 x 1. (f + g)(2) 2. (f g)(x) 3. f (x + 1) 4. (f g)(2x) 5. (f g)(3) 6. (g g)(2) 7. (g f )(1) 1
