Technical Process Bulletin No.
This Revision: 11/02/2006
BONDERLUBE 745
1.

Introduction:

BONDERLUBE 745 is non-reactive lubricant for cold forging of steel, stainless

and nonferrous metals, replacing conventional phosphate and soap lubricant.
BONDERLUBE 745 can be applied by immersion.

Equipment:

Process tanks should be constructed of mild steel with FRP (Fiber Re-enforced
Plastic) lining or 300 series stainless steel. An overflow weir is
recommended to skim the surface and mix the product.
Process piping and mixing devices should be 300 series stainless steel.
Circulation pumps to be constructed from stainless steel, PVC, or
polypropylene. All chemical feed pump parts and other elastomers, which may
come into contact with the solution, can be EPDM, PTFE (Teflon), PVC, Nitrile
Rubber or Nylon.
Direct or indirect heating can be used for heat exchange. Heat exchangers
should be constructed of stainless steel plates and can use steam, hot water
or oil.

Process:
Shot-blasting
Hot water rinsing/preheat
BONDERLUBE 745 treatment
Drying
Heat retention

Shot Blasting:
In case there is residual oil or shot blast media on the surfaces after
blasting, these foreign substances must be removed by cleaning. Our PARCO
CLEANER 3225X is recommended for optimum cleaning. It is imperative that all
blast media, oils, and cleaner residue are completely removed before applying
BONDERLUBE 745.
Hot Water Rinsing/Preheat:
In case thermal capacity of the work is large, applying a hot water
rinse/preheat process can shorten the process time.
To avoid contamination of the BONDERLUBE 745 with hard water salts, it is
strongly recommended that deionized or reverse-osmosis water be used in the
pre-heat tank. Otherwise, some precipitation of the BONDERLUBE 745 may occur
over time.
Corrosion of parts in this pre-heat tank may be controlled by using PARCOLENE
21A or other appropriate Henkel products.
Buildup:
Be sure to mix BONDERLUBE 745 well before dispensing into any tank.
A recommended starting buildup is 79 gallons (299 liters) BONDERLUBE 745 per
100 gallons. Adjust this make-up concentration of BONDERLUBE 745 with
deionized or reverse-osmosis water so that the lubricant coating weight after
drying is 450 to 1400 mg/ft2 (5 to 15 g/m2), preferably 1100-1400 mg/ft2 (12
to 15 g/m2). Lubricant coating weight may vary depending on the shape of the
work and its surface conditions.
Dilute the bath gradually with deionized
water until the concentration for the target coating weight is obtained.
Operation:
Immerse the articles to be treated in the BONDERLUBE 745 bath for at least
five seconds. More time may be used to ensure that the parts are thoroughly
coated. A maximum of three minutes of immersion is recommended.
Drying:
Immediately after immersion, the parts must be dried at 175-250F (80-120C),
making sure that any air pressure does not remove the coating. Drying times
will vary with part temperature and coating thickness. There should be no
glossy appearance to the parts at this point.
Heat Retention:
The BONDERLUBE 745 film is hygroscopic. If there is a delay before the
forming operation, retaining heat or re-drying of the parts will be necessary.
Optimum temperature for heat-retention is 20 F (10 C) above ambient
temperature.

Replenishment and Adjustment:

In the course of operation, the concentration of bath solution varies due to
drag-in from the previous process and water evaporation. Periodical
adjustment of the concentration is required.
6.

Testing and Control:

BONDERLUBE 745 can be controlled using two different methods, the choice being
dependent on the drag-in of salts. If hot water rinsing/pre-heating is done
with deionized or reverse-osmosis water, then conductivity can be used to
control concentration. However, if hot water rinse/pre-heat tanks are not
maintained at deionized or reverse-osmosis quality, then solids should be used
to control concentration. Otherwise, salt drag-in will affect the BONDERLUBE
745 conductivity, and give false concentration measurements.
Conductivity (mS/cm):
Once a proper coating weight is determined, the conductivity should be
measured concurrently and used as a benchmark. The conductivity must be
maintained within 10% of this established conductivity value.
When the proper coating weight is produced by the bath, measure the
conductivity using a standardized conductivity meter. Maintain the
conductivity within 10% of this value. If the conductivity rises above 10% of
this value, contact your technical service representative.
Solids:
Once a proper coating weight is determined, the solids should be measured
concurrently and used as a benchmark, being maintained within 10% of this
established solids value.
Weigh 5.0 g of the working BONDERLUBE 745 bath and dry in a tared, 200 mL
beaker at 212F (100C) until a constant weight is obtained. The solids can
be calculated by the following equation:
% Solids = ((g sample after drying)/(g initial sample)) * 100
7.

Storage Requirements:

BONDERLUBE 745 is a semi-stable dispersion but may freeze at temperatures

below 25F (-4C). Keep from freezing.
8.

Other Recommendations:

Avoid drag-in of foreign substances into the BONDERLUBE 745 bath.

deteriorate product performance.

These can

Always use deionized water for bath make-up and replenishment.

Always mix the product well before using or dispensing.
9.

Waste Disposal Information:

Applicable regulations covering disposal and discharge of chemical should be

consulted and followed.
Disposal information for the chemical, in the form as supplied is given on the
Material Safety Data Sheet.

Should it ever be necessary to discard the lubricant solution, first allow the
bath to cool to room temperature. The material may then be pumped into
containers for disposal or sent directly to an industrial waste treatment
system.
10.

Precautionary Information:

When handling the chemical, in the form as supplied, the precautionary, first
aid and handling recommendations on the Material Safety Data Sheet for the
product should be read, understood and followed.
