Expatriates & Repatriates

Topic of expatriates calls out for contacting the person who lives
outside of their native country for job purposes or business
purposes, where repatriates are the people who came back to their
native country after working abroad.
Our first job as the team was to make up a list of the relatives,
friends as well as colleagues who are currently working outside of
the country. We made the cumulative list of personnel and made
priority to contact the person whose job profile resembles Human
Resource Management. So we then made the list of probable
questions that we can ask to them and the list of questions that we
are asking are as follow:
What are environmental difference?
- The responses were common as all of them faced difficulty
in adjusting to a foreign country, some faced difficulty in
matching up to performance expectations.
What are cultural differences in working environment?
- Mostly responses were that it is a complete change from
what they were used to. One of the responses was that
people have to juggle between do it yourself and relying
on others with changing scenarios, here in India most of the
work is done with the help of others whereas outside mostly
one has to do it himself.
How does company accommodate such changes in working
environment?
What are leeway that company provides for expatriates?
Working with different people with different background, what
difference does it make?
- Learning other cultures from close, how others react to
different situations and managing communications are
points which were stressed. These points make the most
difference in learning and how the change in working these
managers had to adapt to.
What skills are required/portrayed by employee for them to be
sent abroad?
- Decision-Making skills and Resourcefulness were stressed by
almost all of the people. Ability as team leader was given
importance too but not all mentioned it because of what
their job demanded.

This were the primary questions that were asked by us, and the
responses that we got are handwritten monologue/conversation and
will be provided by us in the final report along with the analysis of
the same. We also got the benefit of following and observing blog
post of the repatriates and expatriates, it gave us glimpse to the
thinking process of the managers. We made the list of blogs that
helped us in the project, but the information that we got from the
blog was in passive form and some of our questions are going
through the blog still remained unanswered. So we gathered our
primary focus on calling part, as it provided deep focus onto the
project as well as interacting with them also give us the glimpse into
their lives.
As of now we have contacted totalof 12 expatriates and we looked
through couples of blogs and shortlisted 5 of the blogs, we searched
through the blogs to get relevant information about the topic. We
have not yet finalized our analysis as we plan to increase our
contact database.
