Installation Instructions for Type AB Screens

These screens are of single piece fully welded construction, and are fixed onto a concrete weir/sump
arrangement with a gasket between each screen. See drawing AQS-005 for more details. The
following items are required for installation:

The screens consist of fine screen material welded into a frame with and acceleration plate and
foot bracket. They are of 304 stainless steel construction (unless specified otherwise) and are
acid cleaned before shipping.
An EPDM or Nitrile rubber gasket to place between each screen section.
Stainless steel lock nuts, bolts & washers for bolting frames together side to side (not supplied).
Stainless steel expansion bolts, wedge/sleeve anchors, resin anchors, or other concrete fixings
(not supplied)
Grout or good quality mastic to seal the screen to the weir structure (not supplied).

Installation Procedure
1. Position the screens on the weir structure. Remember to insert a gasket between them if supplied,
which can be held loosely in place with the side-to-side bolts this will require access underneath the
screens. Check that all the screens will fit between the wing walls before drilling any fixing holes if
there is insufficient space, one or more gaskets can be omitted.
2. The order of fixing will depend on the type of fixing used. If sleeve anchors are used then holes can
be drilled with the screens in place the 13mm fixing holes will allow for a 12mm masonry bit.
Otherwise mark up and then drill with the screens removed. Ensure that the concrete is of good
quality and is fully cured before drilling, and that the holes are at least 50mm from any
surfaces. The concrete should be designed such that the fixings do not coincide with any
reinforcement bar.
3. Fix the screens to the weir, with the gaskets in place, but do not fully tighten the fixings. All
threads must be lightly covered with anti-seize grease stainless steel fittings can weld
themselves together if this is not done. Once all the screens are in their final position, the bolts can be
tightened up.
4. Finally the gap between the outer screens and the concrete can be filled with grout or good quality
mastic to give a watertight seal. Any gaps under the leading edge of the acceleration plate should
also be filled.
Health & Safety
Follow site-specific rules and risk assessments. In addition you should:
wear gloves when handling screens, as they may have sharp edges
use the appropriate number of people to lift each screen into position
wear eye and ear protection when drilling holes in concrete
read and follow the COSHH sheets for any grease products or sealants used.
NOTE: Depending on the design of the weir structure, and the order of installation of the screens, the
fitting of the side-to-side fixing bolts may be classed as Working in a Confined Space.
