MUSLIM SLAVES
S. M. Dawjee
2016
These slaves were kept in abject conditions by the Dutch authorities. They often
complained about the unpalatable food they were obliged to consume, lack of
warm clothing during the bitter Cape winters, and the severe punishment for
minor violations of rules. Most slaves were named after the slave traders who
purchased and sold them, or after their owner. This explains why the majority of
Cape Muslims have distinctly Christian surnames, such as Davids, Da Costa, and
Fredericks.
The leading opponents of Dutch colonization and economic monopoly of the
East Indies were also exiled to the Cape. Prominent among such exiles were
Abdullah ibn Qadi Abd al-Salam, Prince of Ternate, and Sheikh Yusuf of
Macassar.
Sheikh Yusuf was a prince, a religious scholar, a mujahid, (freedom fighter) and a
sheikh of the Khalwatiyyah Sufi Order. He met with slaves secretly in their lodges
and at his own home where he initiated them into his tariqah (Sufi order). He is
regarded by some historians as the pioneer of Islam in South Africa. The fact that
elements of Khalwatiyyah practices survive to this day indicates that Sheikh
Yusuf had an abiding impact on the development of Islam at the Cape.
Sheikh Abdullah ibn Qadi Abd al-Salam popularly known as Tuan Guru had a
profound knowledge of Islam and was one of the first prisoners on Robben
Island. On his release he became the first Imam and madrasah teacher at the
first mosque established at the Cape.
An interesting fact of note is that the first Mosque (Dorp Street) in South Africa
was built on land donated by a Muslim woman, Saartjie van de Kaap, who was
born to slave parents
Muslims were generally not allowed to practice their religion freely. George
Foster noted in 1770 that Muslim slaves would meet once a week at a free
slaves home to chant verses from the Quran. In 1804 the Mardyker slaves were
granted the right to worship publicly because of their participation in a war
against the British. Freedom finally arrived with elation and sadness when
slavery was banned on December 1, 1834. Prior to this the oppressed found
1
solace and Islam radiated around clandestine, candle lit meetings to the
melodious chanting of Quranic verses contained in the Haddad and the Hajah.
So remember Me; I will remember you. And
be grateful to Me and do not deny Me
(Quran 2:152)
In my humble attempt to glorify the Allah (SWT) and seek His mercy and
pleasure I have assembled extracts from the Holy Quran and from the
authors (may Allahs peace and blessings be upon them) of both the Ratib
Al Haddad and the Hajah.
While the litany of these verses elevates the soul and comforts the heart,
the essence thereof lies in upholding the basic tenets of Islam.
May Allah forgive us and all who preceded us and all who will succeed us.
May He grant honor to our lives and benefit in our actions.

Have you considered? Should God make me perish, and those with
me; or else He bestows His mercy on us; who will protect the disbelievers from
an agonizing torment?
29. Say,
Have you considered? If your water drains away, who will bring you
pure running water?

Concluding Dua
Algamdu Liel Laa
Oh Allah bless our beloved parents, our grandparents, our families and
friends and all those who are no longer with us. Give noor in their kabar and
open to them the doors Jannat. Verily they went before us and surely we
are to follow. May your peace and blessing be with them and may it be with
us upon our arrival.
Oh Allah bless our beloved predecessors who had the courage to uproot
themselves in search of a better life. May we make good on the sacrifices
that they have made.
Oh Allah bless us with a lineage who are God fearing, pious and prosperous
both in this world and the hereafter.
O Allah! Give piety to our souls and purity to our conscience. You are indeed
the Master of our souls and the Guardian of our conscience.
O Allah! We ask You for Your love and the love of those whom You love and
let our lives be filled with deeds which You love.
O Allah! Make our beginning good, our living honourable, and our end
successful. We ask You to grant us the good of this world and the good of
the Hereafter, O Most Merciful of all Who show mercy!
O Allah! Cover our shame, pacify our fears, and guard us from what is in
front of us and behind us, from what is on our right side and on our left,
from what is above us and what is below us.
41
O Allah! We seek refuge in You from the feebleness of old age. Grant us O
Allah! goodness of mind and body, sight, hearing and speech.
O Allah! we seek refuge in You from a knowledge, which does not benefit,
from a heart, which does not tremble, from the arrogance of an ego, and
from a supplication, which is not accepted.
O Allah! You are the creator and sustainer of all that is in the heavens and
the earth. You know our condition. You know what is good for us. Let us
please be pleased with what you have decreed for us and grant us Oh Allah,
a good ending.
O Allah! We seek refuge in You from unbelief and dispair, and from the
punishment of the hereafter.
O Allah! Let us please live with Imaan. Let us die with Imaan. And let us be
raised with Imaan. And on a day when there shall be no shade and verily
there will be such a day let us please be standing in the Coolness of Your
Gaze and grant us a drink from the cup of our beloved Nabie Muhammad
(SWS) that we may never thirst thereafter. And let us enter paradise
through the gate of honour giving our record in front of us and in our right
hand and not in our left hand nor behind us. And let us please be in the
company of the teachers, the witnesses, the righteous and the sincere.
Oh Allah please accept our supplication.
If You do not guide we are lost.
Yaa Ayyuhalla Thee Na Aamanuu Sol Luu Alayhi Wasalli Muu Tasleema
42
Glorified be your Lord, the Lord of Honour and Power! (He is free) from
what they attribute unto Him!
And peace be on the Messengers!
