THE HYMN OF

MUSLIM SLAVES
S. M. Dawjee

2016

South African Muslims do not only represent diverse socio-economic categories,

but also diverse national origins. In the 17th century, slaves were brought by the
Dutch East India Company from their colonies in East and West Africa, South
India, Ceylon, and the Malaysian Archipelago to provide labour for the nascent
Dutch colony at the Cape.

These slaves were kept in abject conditions by the Dutch authorities. They often
complained about the unpalatable food they were obliged to consume, lack of
warm clothing during the bitter Cape winters, and the severe punishment for
minor violations of rules. Most slaves were named after the slave traders who
purchased and sold them, or after their owner. This explains why the majority of
Cape Muslims have distinctly Christian surnames, such as Davids, Da Costa, and
Fredericks.
The leading opponents of Dutch colonization and economic monopoly of the
East Indies were also exiled to the Cape. Prominent among such exiles were
Abdullah ibn Qadi Abd al-Salam, Prince of Ternate, and Sheikh Yusuf of
Macassar.

Sheikh Yusuf was a prince, a religious scholar, a mujahid, (freedom fighter) and a
sheikh of the Khalwatiyyah Sufi Order. He met with slaves secretly in their lodges
and at his own home where he initiated them into his tariqah (Sufi order). He is
regarded by some historians as the pioneer of Islam in South Africa. The fact that
elements of Khalwatiyyah practices survive to this day indicates that Sheikh
Yusuf had an abiding impact on the development of Islam at the Cape.
Sheikh Abdullah ibn Qadi Abd al-Salam popularly known as Tuan Guru had a
profound knowledge of Islam and was one of the first prisoners on Robben
Island. On his release he became the first Imam and madrasah teacher at the
first mosque established at the Cape.

An interesting fact of note is that the first Mosque (Dorp Street) in South Africa
was built on land donated by a Muslim woman, Saartjie van de Kaap, who was
born to slave parents

Muslims were generally not allowed to practice their religion freely. George
Foster noted in 1770 that Muslim slaves would meet once a week at a free
slaves home to chant verses from the Quran. In 1804 the Mardyker slaves were
granted the right to worship publicly because of their participation in a war
against the British. Freedom finally arrived with elation and sadness when
slavery was banned on December 1, 1834. Prior to this the oppressed found
1

solace and Islam radiated around clandestine, candle lit meetings to the
melodious chanting of Quranic verses contained in the Haddad and the Hajah.

So remember Me; I will remember you. And
be grateful to Me and do not deny Me
(Quran 2:152)

Be then a slave of the Almighty and answer

to none but His Call
2

In the name of Allah Most Mercyful Most beneficient.

In my humble attempt to glorify the Allah (SWT) and seek His mercy and
pleasure I have assembled extracts from the Holy Quran and from the
authors (may Allahs peace and blessings be upon them) of both the Ratib
Al Haddad and the Hajah.
While the litany of these verses elevates the soul and comforts the heart,
the essence thereof lies in upholding the basic tenets of Islam.

May Allah forgive us and all who preceded us and all who will succeed us.
May He grant honor to our lives and benefit in our actions.
Ameen

Ala bithikriAllahi tatma-innu alquloob

In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful.

1. Ya,

Seen.

2. By

the Wise Quran.

4. On

a straight path.

3. You

are one of the messengers.

5. The

revelation of the Almighty, the Merciful.

7. The

Word was realized against most of them, for they do not believe.

6. To

warn a people whose ancestors were not warned, and so they are
unaware.
8. We

placed shackles around their necks, up to their chins, so they are stiffnecked.
9. And

We placed a barrier in front of them, and a barrier behind them, and We

have enshrouded them, so they cannot see.
10. It

is the same for them, whether you warn them, or do not warn themthey
will not believe.
11. You

warn only him who follows the Message, and fears the Most Gracious
inwardly. So give him good news of forgiveness, and a generous reward.

12

12. It

is We who revive the dead; and We write down what they have forwarded,
and their traces. We have tallied all things in a Clear Record.
13. And

cite for them the parable of the landlords of the townwhen the
messengers came to it.
14. We

sent them two messengers, but they denied them both, so We reinforced
them with a third. They said, We are messengers to you.
15. They

said, You are nothing but humans like us, and the Gracious did not
send down anything; you are only lying.
16. They
17. And

said, Our Lord knows that we are messengers to you.

our only duty is clear communication.

18. They

said, We see an evil omen in you; if you do not give up, we will stone
you, and a painful punishment from us will befall you.
19. They

said, Your evil omen is upon you. Is it because you were reminded?
But you are an extravagant people.
20. Then

a man came running from the remotest part of the city. He said, O my
people, follow the messengers.
21. Follow
22. And

those who ask you of no wage, and are themselves guided.

why should I not worship Him Who created me, and to Whom you will
be returned?
23. Shall

I take other gods instead of Him? If the Merciful desires harm for me,
their intercession will not avail me at all, nor will they save me.
24. In
25. I

26. It

that case, I would be completely lost.

have believed in your Lord, so listen to me.

was said, Enter Paradise. He said, If only my people knew.

27. How

28. After

my Lord has forgiven me, and made me one of the honored.

him, We sent down no hosts from heaven to his people; nor would We
ever send any down.
29. It

was just one Cry, and they were stilled.

30. Alas

him.

for the servants. No messenger ever came to them, but they ridiculed

31. Have

they not considered how many generations We destroyed before them;

and that unto them they will not return?
32. All

of them, every single one of them, will be arraigned before Us.

13

33. And

there is a sign for them in the dead land: We give it life, and produce
from it grains from which they eat.
34. And

We place in it gardens of palm-trees and vines, and cause springs to

gush out of it.
35. That

they may eat from its fruits, although their hands did not make it. Will
they not be appreciative?
36. Glory

be to Him who created all the pairs; of what the earth produces, and of
their own selves, and of what they do not know.
37. Another

darkness.

sign for them is the night: We strip the day out of itand they are in

38. And

the sun runs towards its destination. Such is the design of the Almighty,
the All-Knowing.
39. And

the moon: We have disposed it in phases, until it returns like the old

40. The

sun is not to overtake the moon, nor is the night to outpace the day.
Each floats in an orbit.
41. Another
42. And
43. If

sign for them is that We carried their offspring in the laden Ark.

We created for them the like of it, in which they ride.

We will, We can drown themwith no screaming to be heard from them,

nor will they be saved.
44. Except
45. Yet

by a mercy from Us, and enjoyment for a while.

when it is said to them, Beware of what lies before you, and what lies
behind you, that you may receive mercy.
46. Yet

from it.

never came to them a sign of their Lords signs, but they turned away

47. And

when it is said to them, Spend of what God has provided for you, those
who disbelieve say to those who believe, Shall we feed someone whom God
could feed, if He so willed? You must be deeply misguided.
48. And
49. All

they say, When will this promise be, if you are truthful?

they can expect is a single blast, which will seize them while they feud.

50. They
51. The

Lord.

will not be able to make a will, nor will they return to their families.

Trumpet will be blown, then behold, they will rush from the tombs to their
14

52. They

will say, Woe to us! Who resurrected us from our resting-place? This
is what the Most Gracious had promised, and the messengers have spoken the
truth.
53. It

will be but a single scream; and behold, they will all be brought before Us.

54. On

that Day, no soul will be wronged in the least, and you will be
recompensed only for what you used to do.
55. The

inhabitants of Paradise, on that Day, will be happily busy.

56. They
57. They

and their spouses, in shades, reclining on couches.

will have therein fruits. They will have whatever they call for.

step aside today, you criminals.

I not covenant with you, O Children of Adam, that you shall not serve the
devil? That he is your sworn enemy?
61. And

that you shall serve Me? This is a straight path.

63. This

is Hellfire, which you were promised.

62. He

has misled a great multitude of you. Did you not understand?

64. Roast

their feet will testify to everything they had done.

will they see?

if We will, We can cripple them in their place; so they can neither move
forward, nor go back.

those who reject their Lord, there is the torment of Hell. What an evil
destination!

22

7. When
8. It

they are thrown into it, they will hear it roaring, as it seethes.

almost bursts with fury. Every time a batch is thrown into it, its keepers will
ask them, Has no warner come to you?
9. They

will say, Yes, a warner did come to us, but we disbelieved, and said,
God did not send down anything; you are very much mistaken.
10. And

they will say, Had we listened or reasoned, we would not have been
among the inmates of the Blaze.
11. So
12. As

they will acknowledge their sins. So away with the inmates of the Blaze.

for those who fear their Lord in secretfor them is forgiveness and a
great reward.
13. Whether

you keep your words secret, or declare themHe is Aware of the

inner thoughts.
14. Would
15. It

He not know, He Who created? He is the Refined, the Expert.

is He who made the earth manageable for you, so travel its regions, and
eat of His provisions. To Him is the Resurgence.
16. Are

you confident that the One in heaven will not cause the earth to collapse
beneath you as it spins?
17. Or

are you confident that the One in Heaven will not unleash against you a
violent storm? Then you will know what My warning is like.
18. Those
19. Have

before them also denied the truth; and how was My disapproval?

they not seen the birds above them, spreading their wings, and folding
them? None holds them except the Compassionate. He is Perceiver of
everything.
20. Or

who is this who is a force for you to protect you against the
Compassionate? The disbelievers are in nothing but delusion.
21. Or

who is this that will provide for you, if He withholds His provision? Yet
they persist in defiance and aversion.
22. Is

he who walks bent on his own design better guided, or he who walks
upright on a straight path?
23. Say,

It is He who produced you; and made for you the hearing, and the
vision, and the organs. But rarely do you give thanks.
24. Say,

up.

25. And

It is He who scattered you on earth, and to Him you will be rounded

they say, When will this promise be fulfilled, if you are truthful?

23

26. Say,
27. But

Knowledge is with God, and I am only a clear warner.

when they see it approaching, the faces of those who disbelieved will
turn gloomy, and it will be said, This is what you used to call for.
28. Say,

Have you considered? Should God make me perish, and those with
me; or else He bestows His mercy on us; who will protect the disbelievers from
an agonizing torment?
29. Say,

He is the Compassionate. We have faith in Him, and in Him we trust.

Soon you will know who is in evident error.
30. Say,

Have you considered? If your water drains away, who will bring you
pure running water?

This is the Book (the Qur'an), whereof there is no doubt, a guidance to
those who are Al-Muttaqun [the pious and righteous persons who fear Allah
much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden)
and love Allah much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has
ordained)].

charity to the poor and also in Allah's Cause - Jihad, etc.].

And who believe in (the Qur'an and the Sunnah) which has been sent down
(revealed) to you (Muhammad Peace be upon him ) and in [the Taurat
(Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel), etc.] which were sent down before you and
they believe with certainty in the Hereafter. (Resurrection, recompense of

They are on (true) guidance from their Lord, and they are the successful.

Allh! None is worthy of worship but He,
The Ever-Living,
The Self-Subsisting by Whom all subsist;
Slumber overtakes Him not, nor sleep;
to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens
and whatever is in the earth;
who is he that can intercede with Him
except by His permission?
He knows what is before them
and what is behind them,
and they encompass nothing
of His knowledge, except what He wills;
His Seat extends over the heavens and the earth,
and He is never weary of preserving them both;
and He is the Most High, the Supreme. (2:255)

The (Prophetic) Messenger believed

in what was revealed to him from his Lord,
and (so did) the believers;
they all believed in Allh
and His Angels and His Books
and His (Prophetic) Messengers;
(they said) we make no distinction
between any of His (Prophetic) Messengers;
and they said: we hear and we obey,
(Grant us) Your forgiveness Our Lord,
and to You is the eventual return.

Allh does not place on any soul a burden

but to the extent of its capacity;
for it is (the benefit of) what it has earned,
and against it (the evil of) what it has wrought:
Our Lord! Do not punish us
if we forget or make a mistake,
Our Lord! Do not lay on us such a burden
as You did lay
on those before us;
Our Lord! Do not impose upon us
that which we do not have the strength to bear;
and pardon us and grant us forgiveness
and have mercy on us,
You are our Protector,
so help us against the unbelieving people.

Oh Allahs bless our beloved Nabie Muhammad (SWS) and all Prophets who
came before him and all those who sacrificed their lives in the way of La Ila
ha Illalah Muhamadur Rasullulah.

Oh Allah bless our beloved parents, our grandparents, our families and
friends and all those who are no longer with us. Give noor in their kabar and
open to them the doors Jannat. Verily they went before us and surely we
are to follow. May your peace and blessing be with them and may it be with
us upon our arrival.
Oh Allah bless our beloved predecessors who had the courage to uproot
themselves in search of a better life. May we make good on the sacrifices
that they have made.

Oh Allah bless us with a lineage who are God fearing, pious and prosperous
both in this world and the hereafter.

O Allah! Give piety to our souls and purity to our conscience. You are indeed
the Master of our souls and the Guardian of our conscience.
O Allah! We ask You for Your love and the love of those whom You love and
let our lives be filled with deeds which You love.
O Allah! Make our beginning good, our living honourable, and our end
successful. We ask You to grant us the good of this world and the good of
the Hereafter, O Most Merciful of all Who show mercy!
O Allah! Cover our shame, pacify our fears, and guard us from what is in
front of us and behind us, from what is on our right side and on our left,
from what is above us and what is below us.

41

O Allah! We seek refuge in You from the feebleness of old age. Grant us O
Allah! goodness of mind and body, sight, hearing and speech.
O Allah! we seek refuge in You from a knowledge, which does not benefit,
from a heart, which does not tremble, from the arrogance of an ego, and
from a supplication, which is not accepted.

O Allah! You are the creator and sustainer of all that is in the heavens and
the earth. You know our condition. You know what is good for us. Let us
please be pleased with what you have decreed for us and grant us Oh Allah,
a good ending.
O Allah! We seek refuge in You from unbelief and dispair, and from the
punishment of the hereafter.

O Allah! We earnestly seek the pleasure of looking at Your Glorious

Countenance and the craving to meet You, without distress or affliction or
misguiding trial.

O Allah! Let us please live with Imaan. Let us die with Imaan. And let us be
raised with Imaan. And on a day when there shall be no shade and verily
there will be such a day let us please be standing in the Coolness of Your
Gaze and grant us a drink from the cup of our beloved Nabie Muhammad
(SWS) that we may never thirst thereafter. And let us enter paradise
through the gate of honour giving our record in front of us and in our right
hand and not in our left hand nor behind us. And let us please be in the
company of the teachers, the witnesses, the righteous and the sincere.
Oh Allah please accept our supplication.
If You do not guide we are lost.

If You do not protect we shall perish.

If You do not forgive we are doomed.

Guide us protect us and forgive us.

O Allah! Guide us protect us and forgive us.

O Allah! Guide us protect us and forgive us.
