Abstract
Many students in Islamic boarding school have Scabies due to the habits of
taking a bath irregularly, alternately using soap and towel, borrowing shirts from
others, and dense environment The purpose of this study was to find out the
correlation between personal hygiene and incidence rate of scabies in students of
Pondok Pesantren Darussalam Al-Faisholiyah (Islamic boarding school)), Ketapang,
Sampang.
This analytic study using cross sectional approach involved the population of all
students studying at the above-mentioned Islamic boarding school, totaling 63
respondents. The samples of 54 respondents were collected using simple random
sampling technique. The independent variable was personal hygiene, whereas the
dependent variable was incidence rate of scabies. Questionnaire and observation sheet
were used to collect the data analyzed using Chi-Square test with the level of
significance a = 0.05.
The result of study showed that most of the respondents (68.5%) had good
personal hygiene, whereas most of them (75.9%) did not have scabies. Moreover, the
result of Chi-Square test showed that = 0.000 and the significance level = 0.05 so
that H0 was rejected because < 0.05. It illustrated that there was a correlation
between personal hygiene and incidence rate of scabies in Pondok Pesantren
Darussalam Al-Faisholiyah, Ketapang, Sampang.
In conclusion, the better personal hygiene possessed by the students, the lower
the incidence rate of scabies. Hence, the nurses are expected to provide education
about Scabies for the students in the Islamic boarding school to increase the students
awareness in maintaining personal hygiene to prevent scabies.
