HUMAN RESOURCE INFORMATION SYSTEM
Introduction
We are living in an era where technology is advancing by the click of every second,
and the world is revolutionizing the way that businesses are carried out. The Human Resource
Information System is an intelligent software system that assists in the collection, recording,
storing and analyzing data that concerns the organizations resources of the human resource
department. Human Resource Information Systems should however not be mistaken to reduce or
shorten the administrative procedures rather they assist in simplifying the process. The System
assists in preparing reports from generated data, providing timely information and reducing labor
costs for human resource departments (Bradic-Martinovic, 2011). The shift in focus in the
business world is growing from mere Human Resource systems to strategic human resource
systems. The strategic systems have an upper hand in analyzing business strategies and
calculating best alternatives for the modern day businesses. (Boateng, 2007)
Background Study
Gladwell Grocery stores is an American retail that has ten stores in New York City. The store has
approximately 400 employees of which most of them are part-time workers. The human resource
manager who is also the director of operations Tom Bell seeks to cut down traveling costs
associated with hiring, recruiting and answering employee questions. Mr. Tom requires a System
that will assist him to do most of the tasks from his office rather than travel to the ten stores each
and every week and increase his efficiency.

Business Assessment
A human resource information system has a role in merging different parts of the human
resource including payroll management, labor productivity, costs management and decision
making. (Gupta, 2013) The Gladwell grocery store does not experience the benefits that an HR
system has to offer. The operation of the store happening in the retail market without a proper
system that controls all the HR functions causes a threat to the business. The plow back of the
store relies entirely on the human workforce that is present in the grocery store. Gladwell store
needs a human resource information system that can hire employees, orient them in their new
roles. The system will also manage compensation and communication between Mr. Bell and his
employees, appraise the performance of employees, and generate payroll data.
Recommended Systems
There are different human resource systems available in the business market and the
choice is dependent on the needs of the business and specifications. The Gladwell store,
however, need a system that performs the three main functions of hiring and providing employee
management functions, act as a communication portal and generate payroll data. A system
accomplishing the three main tasks will solve Mr. Bells problem of traveling weekly to each of
the stores. The system will also increase efficiency in the process of hiring and accuracy in tasks
management. There are two available human resource information systems in the market that can
effectively solve Mr. Bells problem efficiently. The two suitable systems available are the
Workable HRIS and the Namely HRIS.
Workable HRIS is a hiring information system sold by the Workable Software limited
and aims to replace emails and spreadsheets with an applicant tracking system. Using the system

one can write job descriptions, post on multiple job boards communicate with employees and
schedule activities. The system pricing is $199 per month for pro users with unlimited
employees.
The Namely HRIS, sold by Namely Company is an online payroll and benefits
platform meant for small and medium-sized businesses. The System can be used to manage all
the human resource data in one place. The system can hire employees, generate payroll data, and
provide the appraisal for employees. The system can also generate timesheets, train employees,
track applicants, report expenses and act as a communication portal. The pricing for the system is
$5 per employee in a month.
The Namely HRIS system is the most suitable system for use by the Gladwell stores as
it solves all the problems that Mr. Bell faces in management and traveling expenses. In addition
to having communication, payroll, and hiring functions the system can also provide analytics
based on the performance of each employee.
Conclusion
Human resource department is core in management and planning of the business organization
and a major flaw in the department may lead to an ultimate fail or big time losses that could be
solved by using the most appropriate HR system.
